card naming bug

LillaThrillaPosted on 06/11/03 at 01:32:07

I remember Rick stumbled across this years ago running his TNM-RG circuit.  Apparently, you can only run a certain number of cards that all begin with the same X characters before TNM7 has a hernia.  I think it was either 500 or 512 cards, but I don't remember what the limit was on the number of characters (8?  probably a DOS thing...)

Does Oliver or anyone else remember this?

P.S. I'm not actually having this problem - I name my cards with the date first to avoid this exact problem!  But I just remembered it today and was curious.

The exact number pre-hernia is 255 cards with the exact same five characters at the beginning.

I'm so glad I just read that. I'm nearing 200 or so cards in one of my circuits and this would have been a problem for me. I have always named my cards like this because I don't use actual dates, I use generic months with 4 weeks in them:

Circuit Initials - Name of Show/PPV - Month Week# - Overall Card Number

So they look like this on screen:

NWPW - THE SUPERSHOW - JULY WEEK2 - 00104

I guess I will switch it around and put the card number first, since it will always be different. Thanks for bringing this one up, I must have missed reading about it back in the day.

By the way, this ONLY applies to the output generated by the HTML gateway.

If you don't use the HTML gateway, the name you give your cards doesn't matter. I have a circuit sitting here with close to 400 cards named "Test". And that's not because I'm a big fan of Andrew Martin ;-)

Thats good to know, I do use the HTML Gateway. Thanks for clarifying what it effects though.

What exactly happens after that with the HTML, because a quick check shows that I've had roughly 240 episodes of my weekly show and it might be worth knowing if using the gateway will cause the cards to not show up or my computer explode or what. :P

If worst comes to worst, I can always rename the show, but all the same...

If you get above 240 cards that begin with the same five characters, it will error out in First Edition.

This limitation is no longer present in TNM 7 Second Edition.

Lucky I decided to stop running my circuit until I got it then. :)

It was 255 cards BTW not 240... my brain isn't working ;-)
