Wrestling Champions League

crazyarbyPosted on 12/09/09 at 09:48:32

Thinkin bout doing a Champions league in the spirit of unrights World Cup.
Went with current champions in all the majors and some indys, but found it hard to find exports.
So, I figured I'd do it at the greatest time for champions in wrestling.  But I need to know when that is.
The champions league is championship holders only.  All the champions need to come from the same time frame.  A group stage followed by a knockout tourny.
When was the greatest time for champions TNM universe?

Depends on what you want

The WAY early days of WRESTLING had some brutal grapplers, hookers, and stretchers, but I somehow doubt that's what you're looking for.

In the 90s, you had the biggest growth of Wrestling/Sports-Entertainment as a business, thus the most expousure ever (And thus the MOST championships, both in terms of Top Titles as well as lower titles).

The 80s had the most active/covered promotions (WWF, WCCW, AWA, and a dozen or so NWA groups, including Mid-South)

I'd say mid to late 90's makes the most sense - you had the Big 3 in the US and where the seeds were planted for a lot of the indys that are around today (APW & Rev Pro. behind the current PWG and places like CZW, JAPW, etc. where ROH now does most of its business).

Even better is the rest of the world (if you want to go international) was pretty much in a boom period as well. NJPW had their 3 Musketeers (Chono, Muto, Hashimoto) and AJPW had it's 4 corners (Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi, Taue) and the emergence of Jun Akiyama slipping into Taue's spot. Throw in FMW at one of it's best periods and Michinoku Pro (which is pretty much my favorite time period for any promotion ever) underneath.

Mexico had lost a lot of its big stars to WCW, but the market was still hot as promotions tried to push out the next generation. CMLL was starting to overtake AAA (specifically the Santo Jr. vs. Casas feud), but AAA still had good things going like the seeds being planted for the Los Vipers/Los Vatos Locos feud.

Then again, the 90's is what I lived through. By the time I got into wrestling WCW was on the scene and the territory-era was dead. I would say the best answer to your question is whatever time period you feel you are the most comfortable with and know the most about.

The 90s is a time I know alot about as well.  But the 80s seemed to have alot more championships.
I was going to include Japan's big two and the big two from mexico as well.
Singles is what I want to do now and later tag teams.  But I want to take singles champions on a certain date, like Dec 31 2009.  I'm taking world champs, IC, US, Cruisers, if they have a singles title they are in.
The current champions add up to about 23 titles which is a good number but like I said it's hard to see any video of these guys much less get exports.
Mid to late 90s vs. mid 80s
tough call

I would wonder what 80's vs. 90's would get you in total titles considering the fact that a promotion probably had more titles in the 90's. For instance, if you were to do the end of 1997 you'd have two extra WWF titles then you'd have even a year before. Also keep in mind that a lot of those NWA titles were scattered around Mexico and Japan after WCW became its own entity. Anything before 2000 (and really probably up to about 5 years.

I have an exhaustive amount of documents concerning any titles that passed through the Japanese lucharesu promotions to about 2002-2003. Most of those belts spent a lot of time in Mexican promotions as well - which is actually more important for the Big 2 Mexican promotions. I will say this - if you plan on doing NJPW and AJPW post-1993, you might as well toss in FMW, too (especially since it is so closely related to ECW). I suppose there is an argument to be made for WAR depending on when you do it, but most of those guys wrestled elsewhere anyway (and I forget what titles passed through there besides anything Ultimo Dragon had).
