Opening TNM

JerokuPosted on 03/19/08 at 17:07:25

I have Windows XP Pro SP2. Every time I open up TNM without going through the command prompt it closes automatically. Is there any way to stop this from happening so I don't have to do the extra step to open tnm?

Not to ask a stupid question, but are you opening the right file?

It should be TNM.BAT

You might need to turn on the file extensions to make sure.
JerokuPosted on 03/24/08 at 23:56:31

Yes, I double click it and it starts to load but it closes right away
Rick GarrardPosted on 03/25/08 at 01:33:40

click on the windows "start" button from your desktop.  Click on "run" from the menu, this should bring up a command prompt box.

In this box copy and paste the following:

c:/tnm/tnm.bat

If your tnm is in a different dos folder than the default, then change the first "tnm" in the line above to match the location of your tnm on your c: drive.  This should allow you to see the error message that TNM is giving before it automatically closes.

Tis nice to use some DOS knowledge for a change.  :)

Actually, I think he already knows that. He wanted to run TNM without going through the command prompt, but Windows XP Pro SP2 apparently doesn't let him.

Jeroku: Right-click on the TNM.BAT file and play around with the compatibility tab to see if you can get anything going.
Rick GarrardPosted on 03/25/08 at 04:45:07

Okay... I missed that completely.

At least I didn't say go back out the command prompt and type in "del *.*"  {don't do it, as it will delete your entire harddrive and if you do, you can't hold me responsible because I told you NOT to do it, damn morons}.

"Did you run TNM Diagnostic?"
JerokuPosted on 03/25/08 at 17:32:02

Yeah I tried all the compatibilities and nothing. Also no problems show up on tnm7diag.It's not anything major, just an annoyance to always have to load the command prompt first before opening tnm7se.Was just curious if there is a way around it.

Right click whatever icon you run TNM from, select Properties, and post what it has in the command line and working directory sections.

Make sure you post it EXACTLY as entered (quotes and all)
JerokuPosted on 03/25/08 at 23:59:28

for cmd.exe

cmd line C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

for command.com

cmd line C:\windows\system32\command.com

If it matters i try and open tnm directly from the run menu I get Bad Command or File Name.

Try this:

My Computer -> C: Drive -> <your TNM folder>

Right-Drag TNM to your Desktop, and select Create Shortcut Here.

Double click that.

See if that works.

(I never, eeeeeeever run TNM from a command line, unless it's in DosBOX for Vista 64 ;->)

The Run Command on the Start Menu only opens apps listed in the System Path, unless you type the whole c:\tnm7se\tnm.bat... Even then, it probably doesn't handle the Working Directory properlly. In Windows, the Working Directory is the folder that you are trying to run the app from, as well as handling all of the files that the app needs. Thus, even if you run TNM from a c:\> command prompt, unless you manually go to the TNM directory, it won't work (just typing c:\tnm7se\tnm will start it, but it will most likely just close or pop up an error)

It is HIGHLY unlikely TNM is in the System Path, nor should it be (Vista allows any app on the start menu to also be run via the Run command, FYI)
JerokuPosted on 03/26/08 at 03:38:31

I try that and it says Bad Command or File Name
pszPosted on 03/26/08 at 13:13:42

You're sure you're making a shortcut with TNM.bat?

There are a number of TNM.<whatver> files...
JerokuPosted on 03/26/08 at 16:00:27

yes i am, i double click it it comes up as C:\Documents and Settings\Me.JAY\Desktop\TNM.BAT.LNK in the title bar and it says Bad command or file name
pszPosted on 03/27/08 at 13:16:26

And what does the Working Directory show?
JerokuPosted on 03/27/08 at 16:19:18

There is no working directory when I right click the shortcut
pszPosted on 03/28/08 at 00:03:46

That's probably the problem :->

Set the Working Directory to be the same as the "Target" (without the tnm.bat, of course)

It should look similar to this:

(Note: Your TNM location is different and I'm running Vista, but this should give you the idea)
JerokuPosted on 03/28/08 at 03:02:18

I mean when I right click the shortcut the option isnt there period, also there is no working directory option when i right click tnm.bat either
pszPosted on 03/28/08 at 13:10:07

Right click your desktop.

Select New-> Shortcut

Handtype your target and working directory.
JerokuPosted on 03/28/08 at 14:24:26

No option for working directory either doing that.
JerokuPosted on 03/28/08 at 18:36:46

I replaced the command and cmd.exe files on my computer with another copy and it seems to be fine now
