Wonder when Oliver is going to...

Rick GarrardPosted on 05/22/08 at 14:04:02

find a way to better password protect the message board for new user signups?

Seems that for the last couple of days we have had between 5 to 10 "guest" viewers at any given time.  Most of whom seem to have signed up for a new account under a gibberish name.  Seems we have a lot of bots trying to email harvest here.  I'd venture a guess that we've had over 100 new users added in the last week or so.

Maybe the signup page needs a capcha or some other sort of sign up device that bots can't figure out as easily?

I'm definitely open to any and all suggestions. Biggest problem with changing systems is that all the old postings will be gone, though.

It's not that big of a deal Rick, especially if a change would mean deletion of all posts.

What?! Lose my postcount?!  :-
Rick GarrardPosted on 06/21/08 at 18:02:00

you mean that yabb doesn't have an improved user signup function after all this time, which can be implemented over the top of the current system?

You'd think they'd have improved their system after all this time.

edit: From what I just read at the link at the bottom of every page of the forum (http://www.yabbforum.com/) for yabb forums which are used here, you should be able to upgrade the current forum setup to the latest version which now uses a captcha-like verification for a new user to sign up to the forum. (The upgrade should work as long as you have not done any modifications to the core files of the forum software.)

BTW, Yabb is now on version 2.2.2 and this forum is still on 1 gold -sp1.2 which is about 5 versions ago in yabb upgrades. (1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and now 2.2.2). To put in TNM terms... it's the equivalent of someone still using 6.2 plus and expecting it to have all the bells and whistles of 7gold. :)

Perhaps this would work as well?

There seems to be a LOT of ways to stop the additional daily signups that never post since they are bots.  And there seems to be a pretty good community on the yabb boards as well.

Nah, wouldn't want that. There's far too much good stuff in the archives that the internet deserves to have.

Plus a lot of incriminating items as well.

There isn't a single person who has posted in this thread yet who doesn't have a better post count than you. :P

That said, Munshun is pretty important. He's like TNM royalty. So yeah Oliver, take that into account when making any decisions.

And when I say 'any' I mean everything, including in your work and home life.
pszPosted on 06/21/08 at 21:17:46

I personally don't care about post-count, as I've been on more "reset" forums than I care to remember :-P

(However, if I *DO* have more posts than Mushin, I'd just like to say: HA BITCH)

That is all.
King MunshunPosted on 06/21/08 at 21:22:39

I don't care who has the most, it's just that i'm FINALLY within the Top 10 posters on the board, and I don't wanna lose that.
91Posted on 06/21/08 at 22:47:55

OK, let's just all agree to wipe off Rick Gerrard's post count and nobody else.

I think everyone would be happy with that scenario.
JakePosted on 06/21/08 at 22:54:52

The boards really could use a confirmation page for "delete user."

*cough*
Rick GarrardPosted on 06/22/08 at 15:00:58

and 91 really needs to learn how to spell my name.  :P

It's been like that in his signature for months, y'know.
91Posted on 06/22/08 at 20:27:20

Everyone has been pointing it out for months too, but I'm still not changing it. 8)
Rick GarrardPosted on 06/23/08 at 02:45:06

that's fine, ya jackass.

I'm sure Oliver could archive it as read-only, as we work on another forum
