Hiring Different Wrestlers?

JerokuPosted on 03/27/08 at 18:10:40

I'm sure we all have gone through periods of hiring the same wrestlers every time we start a new circuit. I'm just curious what you do to end this cycle.I find if I do the random hiring, or flat out hiring no one I used prior that I have a hard time staying connected with the circuit, however if I use the same wrestlers I tend to fall into the trap of using the same gimmicks.

Try doing it half and half.  That way you have the new guys to try and work with and you have the guys that'll keep you interested.  If it lasts long enough you'll probably find yourself getting attached to your random guys the same way you are attached to your preferred hires.

My first question would be what kind of thought do you put into your new circuit? Do you try to match wrestlers to the type of matches you want to have in your circuit? Lucha? Hardcore? Technical? The big guys? The small indy guys? Garbage? Japanese?

Is your circuit like ROH or more gimmicky? Lots of comedy? Little comedy? None at all?

I like to have a gimmick for the circuit I want to do and once I have that down and a name, I populate it with wrestlers based around that. Who would fit with the promotion and what jumps out at me to write material for those wrestlers.

I think with a little thought going into things goes a long way into putting it all together.

I need to know who at least half my roster are. Since I run Indy-style feds most of the time, and I mostly only watch ROH, I tend to get stuck with, basically the ROH roster. The solution for me is to try to get hold of other indy shows, just so that I can get a feel of a different wrestler's character.

I have no problems what so ever to change the people I hire.

Mostly it's the same guys until a new talent I like comes along and replaces another.

But mostly I think about what kind of storylines I want to run and what the entire circuit will be about.

I run a WWE circuit (my interpretation) and run three brands...

Just as a question - how many people do you guys have on your roster?

A lot. 24-32 for each brand. Every time.

*Checks*

69. Fuck, that's a lot. Also a very humourous number. I am planning a clear out but I also have a few signings planned too. Oh well...

What I've done in my most recent circuit is start out with my 20 favorite workers and then branch out from there by scouting wrestlers on youtube that have high workrates and/or a look or gimmick that I like. I've also done the mystery approach and then just fire the guys with low match rateings. I also fire wrestlers that i lose respect for after reading something or seeing a bad or lame match with them in it. And sometimes I just get bored of somebody and fire them.

Hiring different wrestlers to me depends on a few things.

If I'm running a WWE style company, theres is ALOT of moneyto hire almost anyone you want. I'll start with a basic roster depending on the year I'm starting the circuit. But from there I like to be creative and think if I was the boss with a TON of money, who would I hire? Sure some of my standard favorites would be in, but how about giving sone of the Indepandant wrestlers a chance. Mabye for tryout matches, or development deals.

If im running an Indy, or NWA/AWA style company, I like starting with wrestlers who are local to that region. Example - (a small Florida Indy would have a roster made up of mostly wrestlers from Florida and Georgia with a few bigger names on the Indy circut being brought in for big feuds.) Small Indy circuts can be really fun because the mix of real and fantasy wrestlers can bring alot of new possibilities. Theres allways been rookies/green wrestlers on every Indy show I've been to, so be creative and try something new.

PS - If its not fun, your not doing it right!

I tend to use both real and fantasy wrestlers, depending on the type of circuit. I usually have a circuit that's all fantasy, then I'll have a couple of WWE-esque big leage all real circuits as well as a puro or lucha circuit (depending on the mood I'm in), and a couple of indy circuits that could be a mix of real and fantasy, all real or both. Usually If it's a larger real time indy like ROH or CHIKARA I tend to use all real, but I may alter some gimmicks.
