Rick's Squared Circle Wrestling Rules?

The TNM Members ChampPosted on 12/10/07 at 03:07:36

Rick,

Have you made any updates to your legendary Old School Rules or even made a new ruleset based off NWA Squared Circle Wrestling? The latter would be interesting as it was pretty realistic to how a kayfabe era promotion would work and tour.

Rick, did you ever have any plans on releasing a ruleset for your circuit? It seems like it would be more of a general ruleset instead of a week by week, step by step approach like your other rules.

HRS, there are currently no plans for a rules set based on NWA on TBS (Squared Circle Wrestling).  All I can say is that if you want to do a circuit like it, feel free to bastardize from mine.  Basically I began with a workable roster from a specific year of NWA/WCW and then booked ahead (on paper) about a month at a time for my major cards and title changes and then worked all the house shows and TV around this.

I figured as much. I really think you should continue on with it. It was really as close to kayfabe booking as it will get on TNM. Just watch some old school NWA matches on the WWE DVDs to get back in the mood.

WWE 24/7 was so good in getting me back into TNM, especially the old NWA TV tapings they showed. My girlfriend lived in a different state and was able to get it, so when she lived there, I could watch it. She has since moved in with me, and we can't get it here.

Selfish bitch. :P

Seriously.

Vert, he was referring to you for not sharing 24/7 with him.  ;)

Oh I know he was...  :-/

Especially now with 24/7 starting to show the Four Horsemen together. I think 24/7 is in early 1986 NWA so far.

I wish Dish Network could/would get 24/7.

I badly want to see original NWA and ECW. And some WCW.

I email Dish about it every month and never even get a response.

No I wasn't.

Though now that you mention it...

How do you guys book a month in advance? Do you start with the supercard (or in my case the PPVs) and work backwards from there? I've tried that, but it never seems to work for me. Any suggestions on something that might work better?

Lots of ways to do this... Lemme think of some examples...

There's the WCW method: Plan out your matches for the PPV, and work backwards from there (IE: Sting(F) vs The Giant(H) in a cage at the PPV for the title, week before have a non-title match with interferance, week before that have a tag match with them on opposite sides, week before that they have a backstage/promo stand off, etc)

There's the modern WWE method: Plan the PPV match, but work FORWARDS towards the PPV based on reactions from fans and how it seems to work on TV (IE: HHH(F) vs Randy Orton(H) for title in an Iron Man match at the PPV. Week one is a face off, see how it goes, maybe throw someone else in to help work it. Week two, use what seems SHOULD happen next, but tweak it slightly to be slightly surprising. Week three, add some flavor and maybe a minor swerve to keep fans on their toes. PPV: Have the match with, I dunno, special ref)

Then there's the old ECW method: Have two guys in a feud with no specific end in sight, and use booked and un-booked outcomes (and unbooked interferance) to cause story arcs and keep the overall feud running longer. This can lead to some circuit-interesting PPVs. This is also a royal pain in the ass to keep track of, so have a notepad handy :-P (Having re-watched all of 1995 and 1996, I have to hand it to the booking crew of classic ECW. Hats off, lads!)

Then of course there's the tried and true: I want these two guys fight, so I'm gonna book every match they have for the next four weeks to make sure it works out. This is, of course, a variation on WWE/WCW of the 1990s and today. Simple yet effective.

You COULD always just go completely off of what TNM spits out at you in terms of feuds, but that tends to lead to blah PPVs.

(Damnit, now I wanna run a real circuit again instead of using TNM as a win/loss tracker...)

You could also watch Guest Booker with James J. Dillon, from Kayfabe Commentaries, to get an understanding of booking wrestling television.

I like to map out main feuds for months in advance (sometimes I get bored with a fed and it never makes it there.)

For example a new circuit i just started I spent the last 1/2 hour (while watching NHL) mapping out six months of my top story line involving the Heavyweight Championship with Brock Lesnar, John Bradshaw Layfield, Vladmir Kozlov, Michael W. Kruel and Goldberg, which these two storylines will dominate the main events.

I also like to set up a mock PPV lineup at the begininng of a month and see if I can work to it.  I always have in the back of mind my where i want certain characters to go.

Not sure if it helps but thats my two cents.
wicked_rexPosted on 04/14/08 at 05:20:03

Great examples, thanks to both of you!

Right now, I'm using some of the angle ideas posted in another thread on the site, and picking (randomly) for each of my three brands. Some angles have been a little harder to pull off, but some just seem to work themselves out. I think I'll give some ideas from both responses to see what I can get as an outcome. Thanks again!
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 04/14/08 at 05:33:40

At least you have monthly pay per views. In my ECW circuit, there are six months in between pay per views (for now) to book. Of course, it's a lot easier being that I have the Guest Booker DVD as a guide for the pay per view. But it's the same concept. Booking shows for a pay per view six months down the road.
wicked_rexPosted on 04/15/08 at 02:02:51

Yeah, I took some time out today and booked a couple Smackdown! angles three weeks in advance, and I actually think it's going to make a pretty good Cyber Sunday PPV.
