Gimmicks that did not work but should have!

Mr. Ken KennedyPosted on 09/06/07 at 23:35:37

Can you think of any?
Rick GarrardPosted on 09/07/07 at 02:43:01

WWF - Waylon Mercy....

The lives of many wrestlers are gonna be in Waylon Mercy's hands.... know what I mean?

WWE - Sean O'Haire's "Not that I'm telling you anything you didn't already know" gimmick.
JustinCrediblePosted on 09/07/07 at 02:45:54

If political powers didn't prevail... Muhammad Hassan could have gone far (IMO).

This would be the one I came in here to post.

I wasn't following WWE much here I don't think, what was the story on this?
JustinCrediblePosted on 09/07/07 at 05:39:43

O'Haire was just your basic "evil" character.. kind of like the proverbial devil on the shoulder... just hinting for you to "go ahead do it.. you know you want to" but his catch phrase was "Hell, I'm not telling you anything you don't already know."

It was the pause between Hell & the rest of the sentence that gave the impression that he was a sort of emmissary for the devil.
pszPosted on 09/07/07 at 05:42:56

Think a taller, more built version of Al Pacino from Devil's Advocate ;->

I actually really liked the character.  I am suprised O'Haire didn't go further in the WWE.  He still wrestling?

Also Hassan was on his way to the top when he was 'killed' off.
JustinCrediblePosted on 09/07/07 at 16:37:14

O'Haire was doing some MMA last I heard.
JakePosted on 09/07/07 at 20:46:13

I believe O'Haire got some tryout matches back in 2005-2006, but it didn't work out (obviously).

In fairness, it's not that the gimmick didn't work, it was working great, it just didn't get the chance to go anywhere due to Spiveys knees. Pity...
rebelinsPosted on 09/08/07 at 02:13:18

Thanks for the videos Rick, it looks like it could've been very interesting.

Wasn't Waylon Mercy kind of a rip-off of Robert Dinero's(sp?) character in Cape Fear?

Man, those O'Haire promos WERE good.

The other two, well, they have me laughing pretty good.

Rip-off is a bit harsh, I'd say more of a portrayal or possibly tribute.
UnrightPosted on 09/09/07 at 15:01:13

I always thought Nailz's character could have gone further, but was held back by the wrestler.

Nailz could have been the New Jack of the WWE.
Mr. Ken KennedyPosted on 09/09/07 at 16:52:59

I think Repo Man could have worked if they never had that rediculous lone-ranger/cat burglar like mask. He was more like an old school type bank robber than he was a Repo Man
UnrightPosted on 09/09/07 at 18:14:51

The trouble with Repo Man is that whoever he was feuding with needed an object to steal. After the first couple of theft feuds, it started to become repetitious and well, boring.

repetitious like Angle vs. Joe Matches!
JustinCrediblePosted on 09/09/07 at 18:37:35

Maybe its just me but I really thought that the "Imposter Kane" gimmick could have gone someplace.

I don`t remember the Imposter Kane angle. I do remember the fake Undertaker angle though, with Brian Lee!
JustinCrediblePosted on 09/09/07 at 18:41:34

The Imposter Kane was Freakin' Deacon (now Festus on SD) in the old Kane outfit complete with mask. They had 1 match at a PPV (which the Imposter won) then the next night on Raw, Kane showed up & decimated him & threw him out of the building never to be seen again.

It was a lame finish to something that could have had potential for a monster vs monster feud.
mdale2kPosted on 09/09/07 at 23:46:19

What was the angle surrounding it?
pszPosted on 09/10/07 at 14:40:20

Around the time of his movie premiere (See No Evil) he (and the audience) started hearing voices talking about "That Day" (same day as the premiere) and it started driving him nuts.
