Old School Wrestling Export Project?

The TNM Members ChampPosted on 09/05/07 at 21:57:32

I vaguely remember Oliver setting up an email discussion list to work on creating and/or updating old school exports. I wonder why that never amounted to much? I'm sure there is some demand to have a detailed amount of kayfabe era wrestlers in the TNM database.

I know I would love to contribute to this project. Rick Garrard is a big time old school fan and there's always masked_texan too. Maybe we can get something going here.

The main page has a lot of 80s wrestlers, but you know there's quite a few not there. Plus, I'm sure there are some users who wouldn't mind running circuits circa 1960s-1970s (similar to what Ryan was running a few months ago).

I'd be interested in both contributing and importing the results. I keep cranking out the old Memphis stuff (3rd batch sent to KOOS last night), but for non-Memphis stuff I tend to have hazier memories...and there's less and less "research material" online.

There's also a lot of "blatant omissions"...guys that really ought to have a readily available export, that don't. For instance, the recent issue of dude running an AWA circuit having Buddy Rose but no Doug Somers. I actually got to see Doug Somers on TV in action in both AWA and Memphis (Buddy Rose didn't make the trip so Somers defended the belts with Soldat Ustinov). But damned if I could tell you a single move he used. Somers is just one example in hundreds, of course.

We have some good ideas here, we just need a few more, and maybe an organizer...or maybe people ought to forge ahead on their own.

After I run out of Memphis names I plan to do some sweepup work and make some oldschool exports from other territories. This will necessarily be slower going for me, with more online research required. Thank goodness for OnlineWorldOfWrestling, YouTube, and Google. I suppose I'll eventually have to get some form of torrent client, which makes me wonder how much social networking is really needed here. But then, if 4 different people research a guy and each come up with 10 moves the others missed, bam, full moveset. So, I have mixed feelings...but I'll contribute, rain or shine.

One idea I'll toss out that anyone can do even if they can't make exports to save their life: just list guys. List the names of guys who worked for a given promotion. Someone else can go "I've heard of him, him, and him" and head off to OWW, Google, etc to continue.

Oh, and part of that entails: go through the old posts in the Exports forum and bump the ones that weren't answered.

I would definitely help out as much as possible if I could as well.

The Memphis workers would be a good start. Are these different wrestlers than what is available on the main page?

There are some exports of old school wrestlers on TNM 6.2 but the quality of these are lesser than the TNM 7 exports. That's another area to improve.

I'm originally from the mid-atlantic area and of course, my favorite promotion growing up was Jim Crockett Promotions. But the Washington, D.C. area always had wrestling syndicated on one of the networks everyday. So I was lucky to have seen a lot of the kayfabe era promotions. Plus, ESPN had their share of wrestling content available.

Maybe each person could do research and create/modify exports based on region of knowledge or interest?

YouTube is a very good place to watch old school wrestling videos. Look up AnimeJoe. That guy has just about every JCP supercard it seems.

Yeah, AnimeJoe has tons of good stuff.  I think with Youtube and OWW, along with all the other services it should be much easier to revamp a lot of it.  I'm from Texas so obviously I know the WCCW stuff but I could try helping with others.  Should we go with different territories at a time with everyone chipping in or everyone just working over what they know best?  It'd be a good way for some to find out about different promotions if everyone found things online.  Another good youtube user is yodog2007, he has a lot of videos on his name and is now uploading some old WCCW stuff.  http://www.youtube.com/user/yodog2007

I think it would be best to first identify the gaping holes in the kayfabe/old school exports. What notable wrestlers from that time period are missing? Then, we can go from there to update the available old school exports (for instance, updating a current Ric Flair export to better reflect the broom stick carrying Ric Flair of the 1980s.)

It seems like WCCW is missing a few notables (Brian Adidas for one).

TNM 3:16 would be happy to host the Old School Exports when they're done.
