What web browser do you use?

Rick GarrardPosted on 04/15/07 at 17:16:51

What browser do you use to view this site and others while on the net?

I myself just downloaded the latest free version of Opera 9.2. I really like their new "speed dial" feature that lets you preview your choice of 9 pages that you select when you open a new tab. (I've been using 8.5 because it was highly stable, but saw this new feature and had to have it). I still use IE for a couple of bill paying sites because they can't be bothered to up their "security standards" to better browsers including Firefox.

edit:  forgot to mention, I've been using Opera since before Firefox's beta testing.  Which puts me as an Opera user for at least the last 4 1/2 years.
Nappy Headed MunshunPosted on 04/15/07 at 19:14:23

I've been using Firefox for going on 2 years now. Never tried Opera before, and i only use IE for webpage editing and previewing.
JakePosted on 04/16/07 at 16:28:10

I'm using Firefox. Been using it for at least 2 years now. I attempted to use Opera, but didn't feel like learning how to operate a new browser.

I only use Internet Exploder to edit/view offline HTML files.

Have Opera removed their forced frames?
CarlzillaPosted on 04/16/07 at 22:43:40

Firefox, although it's acting strange lately, so I might switch to Opera, which is my backup browser. I hate IE.

what forced frames?  You must have been using a "user mode" and not the author mode.  They even have one that makes your browser window look like it is a Commodore 64... although it'slook is nifty, it's really not for browsing much.  I do have to say it does have a built in IRC client (no widgets to download unlike Firefox) and also has a built in RSS reader (first major browser to have it built in ... they did it before Firefox was in beta)  I do have to say that I've customized my Opera so that the tabs are at the bottom of the screen ... thats the one really major cool thing with Opera... it's VERY customizeable to the user's needs.
CarlzillaPosted on 04/17/07 at 00:42:03

Rick, all your talk Opera made me try it out again...I think I may stick with Opera.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/17/07 at 00:51:51

make sure to get the latest version 9.2  It's got some nifty new features :)
Zedja - TNMWA ChampionPosted on 04/17/07 at 19:23:38

I haven't used Opera for years, but when I used it, it had a column on the left that you just couldn't remove. And if I remember correctly also commercial banners at the top.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 01:15:04

Opera hasn't had those banner ads since the version update from version 7.0 to version 7.5 (hence the unusual midway update to .5).  It's been free without ads since I've started using it.  And without said columnar bar on the side as well... it's now a "pop-out" menu bar that gives you "quick access" to chat, recent history, a notepad (copy/paste area), links from current page, and all the widgets you care to add.  Basically it's Firefox before Firefox.  ;)
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 01:53:18

Just re-installed Opera (used for about 1 day a few months back). I'll give it a bit longer this time, if only to shut Rick up for two minutes. :P

Edit: I remember now why I didn't use Opera for too long. Because I loved Adblock and Flashblock on Firefox so much...
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 02:06:52

that's what editing the hosts file can do for you as well.  :)
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 02:10:53

Oh, I unders...*BANG*

MMMMMMM WHATCHA SAAAAAAYYYYYYY

*has no clue what you just said*
Nappy Headed MunshunPosted on 04/18/07 at 02:13:20

You guys are totally making me want to download Oper--*BANG*

MMM WHATCHA SAAAAAAAAAAAY
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 02:13:36

I get like no popups/popunders on ANY browser.  I have my PC locked down pretty heavily thanks to an edited hosts file, thanks to the good ol' kolla.de spybot s&d software.  Whether it's IE or Opera, I get almost crazy ads, especially like those over at Bob Ryder's 1popup.com er 1wrestling.com
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 03:02:18

*edits HOSTS file*

Holy crap. This is freaking awesome.

*deletes Firefox*
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 03:10:10

Okay, seriously, I've been converted. ;D

But, uh, anyway to disable that "Content Link" stuff? Where it underlines certain words for "bubble" pop-ups?
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 04:43:34

edit #1 ... note:Disregard the following as it only disables the tab popup preview windows.... unless you want them gone.:

http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/opera-faq

follow the link on item #31 and uncheck the box next to:
Use Thumbnails in Tab Tooltips

Then click "save" at the bottom of the page and the hover previews will go away.

You'll find that the browser is HIGHLY customizeable if you like to tinker with .ini files and the like.
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 04:51:06

Wow. Lots of options. ;D Me likey.

Thanks.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 04:54:17

Jake... my last reply was only for the big preview popups on tabs... of course, I was wanting mine to go away, so I found that option.

However, I cannot find anything that says there is highlighted links option. That sounds almost as if you have some sort of ad tracking/adware on your computer that you may not be aware of.

And yes... there are LOTS of options... this is probably the most customizeable browser that's free at least in my opinion and power userness of it over the last few years.  Plus I just found out by reading the Opera site... they are doing the "internet channel" in the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.  So they've definitely got some pretty big financial backing now.
JakePosted on 04/18/07 at 05:13:30

Problem fixed.

That code is all over Rajah. It's just the site, man.
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/18/07 at 06:58:33

if you hit the question mark icon... it will let you shut off the popups.
tafkagaPosted on 04/18/07 at 22:39:16

I used Opera for about 4 years and loved it, but about a year ago it started getting really buggy on me.  My bookmarks were vanishing mysteriously and sometimes it would crash and when I would open it all of the default settings would be back.  That got aggravating so I've been using Firefox ever since, and I don't really miss Opera.
JakePosted on 04/24/07 at 20:24:55

Well, found the first major thing I don't like about Opera.

Loaded a YouTube video (Jeff Hardy vs Johnny Nitro - IC Title Match). Firefox would actually SAVE a 'temp' file of the video so I could simply move it to my Videos folder and VOILA! As soon as I closed the tab in Opera, it deleted the file. So now I have to load the video all over again.

Hooray.

See, the thing that gets me, is that it's saved every freaking picture I've viewed, but couldn't keep the video? >:(

Explain how that works again? You could actually SAVE videos from YouTube? Like, permanently?
Rick GarrardPosted on 04/25/07 at 09:36:04

I'm guessing this has something to do with the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) or something like that.  Then again, it may just be a setting that needs to be "tweaked".  As it stands right now, I won't be able to look into this for you until Sunday at the earliest.
CarlzillaPosted on 04/25/07 at 10:30:09

http://www.youtubex.com/

just stick the youtube video link into the appropriate box and hit the download video link.

The videos themselves are in FLV format so you'll probably need to download something that will play them.

*WINDOWS XP*
If you use Firefox, after a YouTube video finishes loading, use the "Search" option (Windows/Start).

Select "All Files and Folders."

(FOR FIREFOX) "Look In"... Browse "C:\Documents & Settings."

"When was it modified?"... "Specifiy Dates"... "Created Date"... Leave the dates as is (They should BOTH be Today's date).

"What size is it?"... A 10 minute YT vid is roughly 20MB.

Then search. It will find a "random_numbers_and_letters" file (among other files, once your used to doing this, it will be easier to find). Right-click, "open containing folder" and copy the highlighted file. Go to whatever folder you save videos in and paste it there. Rename this file "whatever.FLV" and you're done. :)

And use FLV Player to view the video.

Also, make sure to grab FLVMDI 2.94 and FLVMDIGUI 1.05 as well. You use these if you find an FLV file that won't let you manually skip during playback.
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 04/25/07 at 15:47:26

If you're a Firefox user, there's an extension to download FLV type of videos that YouTube has so you don't have to go through the trouble of searching your computer for it. It's called VideoDownloader.
King MunshunPosted on 04/25/07 at 20:51:41

IT WOOOOOOOOORKS!!

Jake, where did you find out about this? And is there a similar way to get the files with IE?

If you know the popup ad servers web name/address, then you type it into the host file, and after it put 0.0.0.0 since your computer reads the hosts file before it reads the network dns file and always goes where the hosts file tells it, thusly blocking the ad server and the popup ads from it.  (this is basically how popup blockers work)
JakePosted on 05/09/07 at 00:12:37

Really? Because mine now looks like this:

127.0.0.1 www.vacationegg.com
127.0.0.1 ads.adbrite.com
127.0.0.1 media.baventures.com
127.0.0.1 www.ifriendshdtv.com
127.0.0.1 kona.kontera.com
127.0.0.1 www.vibrantmedia.com
127.0.0.1 vibrantmedia.com
And it works fine.
Rick GarrardPosted on 05/09/07 at 07:02:34

127.0.0.1 is the alternate IP number to use instead of 0.0.0.0 to do blocking through the hosts file.  Either number works just fine.  and both are great for stopping 1popup.com and it's fellow ad sites.
JakePosted on 05/09/07 at 16:24:44

Oh, I've solved my own problem with Opera not saving/caching YouTube videos. Before accessing the .tmp files (located in Your Opera Directory/Profile/cache4) you need to close Opera.
Rick GarrardPosted on 05/10/07 at 05:00:58

congrats on finding the fix.  So how you liking it with it's "speed dial" feature?
JakePosted on 05/11/07 at 14:21:39

Oh, I love it. Now, if only I could remember the order of my pages so I could (effectively) use the CTRL+# feature. ;D
JakePosted on 05/16/07 at 17:46:12

Well, I've figured out something about caching media in Opera. To access a cached file, you have to allow it to fully load first. You do that, and it's completely accessible (though I would recommend exiting Opera first to avoid complications).

Unfortunately, it has a ... not-so-smart way of caching. Instead of finding the "source" and caching that, it caches what you view.

Example: Load a video on Youtube. Copy the Embed tag and paste that somewhere else (as a Myspace comment), try playing that version. It has to completely reload.

Makes no sense.

Or rather use Flash 8 and use them that way. Right?
