Survey of sorts...

Snabbit888Posted on 07/24/06 at 23:28:55

Haven't done one of these in awhile, and we have some new users here now, so I'll pose a few questions that anyone can answer.

1) What is your favorite angle you've ever done in a circuit?

2) How long have you been using TNM?

3) Who are your strangest tag teams/champions that ended up working really well?

4) Who are some wrestlers you love to use in TNM?

5) Conversely, who are some wrestlers who no matter what, you can't seem to book them properly in your circuits?

6) Longest title reign?  Shortest title reign?

7) Anything else you want to add?

1) The old "Who shot Reckless Youth" angle (known as the RY incident) on my old circuit several years ago garnered more interest in a single storyline on the boards than any other I can remember seeing for anyone with one or two possible exceptions. That flowed very nicely. Attempts to recreate it in some early DWF cards were less successful.

It was Ken Shamrock, before anyone asks.

In my current circuit, the long overdue DWF, a few stand out. The split of Triple H and Shawn Michaels in the very early days seems like old hat but actually sparked an interesting debate between a couple of friends as to who was right from a moral standpoint which gave me a nice ego rub. Effectively they were friends but facing each other for the title with Shawn defending. There is outside interference and Triple H gets knocked out from behind. Shawn forgets the match and chases the inteferers (DDP and Kanyon) away but they return and take out Shawn. Triple H comes to and is aware that there's been some sort of interference but elects to take the pin before going after the DDP/Kanyon team. Shawn protests that Hunter should have not taken the pin like him, while Hunter argues that he wasn't fully aware of what happened and he had to take every opportunity he could. Shawn ended up going heel, for the record.

That's about as deep as it gets I'm afraid. Also worth noting would be the WWF vs WCW gimmick elimination match, Matt Hardys team of mystery Mattitude partners for an elimination match against his brothers team (ending up being Ken Mattera, Mattanka, One Matt Gang, El Mattador and the Ultimatt Warrior) and the characters for Jerry Lynn, Brad "The Rock" Armstrong and Rob Van Dam. And the entire card for Wrestlefest VII, easily the best event I've ever done.

Oh yes, and the "Sean Mooney" match between Scott Putski and Paul Roma where Sean Mooney hijacks the commentary and nobody cares. That one had more detail written into it than any of the matches that actually mattered, such is my love of a little sprinkling of Wrestlecrap here and there.

Still, the absolute best would be, of course, "Haiku Reading" Jeff Hardy. The one incident that I hold with great fondness was before a Hardy Boys vs Strike Force match where Jeff and Rick Martel went at in in a spontaneous haiku insult match. When I eventually get round to a DWF 10 year anniversary special (that'll probably take me 10 years real time to get to), that match is going on there.

2) Since about 1998. Been posting on the boards from shortly after that. There have been some quiet patches and some patches where I'm TNMing all day but I've always come back to it.

3) It was never supposed to be Jerry Lynn who was the main man in the DWF, it just worked out that way. Him. His year long title reign was easily the best world title reign I've ever had, hence why it was the longest.

As far as tag teams go, Psychoanalysis (Sean O'Haire and Brian Pillman) worked really well. Until I split them up and Pillman went nuts and started doing Shining monologues.

4) The DWF is the only really long term one I've had (my previous incarnation reached about two years before my computer died). Still, the guys that went straight down on the list when I was out who to hire when I started were Shane Douglas, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit and Rob Van Dam - incredibly samey of me but they're good ones to build off before you elevate other guys. That said, of the four of them, only Shane Douglas has actually left the DWF.

If I was starting again now, I'd have a lot of problems working out who would go in. The Hardys would, I've had a lot of fun with them in the DWF as solo wrestlers. Benoit would be in, Dynamite Kid would be in, Brad Armstrong, Sean O'Haire, Jerry Lynn and Pretty Perfect (Owen Hart/Curt Hennig) would all be straight in too, all based on current successes.

5) I used to have a lot of problems doing Kurt Angle for some reason, he'd always get lost in the shuffle. His overly racist pro-America gimmick I have for him right now is probably the best I've done at keeping him near the top long term even if in the 8 years I've been doing TNM, I've NEVER had him as a world champion in any fed I've done. One day...

6) Shortest is easy - I've got a few one day champs and that's it. World champions Chris Benoit and Shawn Michaels and TV champs Paul Roma and Lance Storm. Relative to their positions on the card when they won and lost the belts, Chris Benoits reign would be the shortest, winning the world title in a PPV main event one night and being stripped of it in the opening segment the next night. I guess that'd be about 21 hours.

Longest remains right at the start of the DWF when Billy Kidman held the cruiserweight title for 482 days (beating Essa Rios, losing to Kid Kash). Also worth noting the tag title reign of Pretty Perfect at 433 days and Jerry Lynns world title reign of 391 days as ones that have surpassed a year. Both Kidman and Pretty Perfect also held their titles an entire calendar year.

7) Wrestlefest VII - http://www.tnm7.de/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=tnmcircs;action=display;num=1091292098

Best DWF card ever. My only regret is that the match write-ups are quite short compared to what I do now. Still, I can't believe I'll have taken over two calendar years to get from one Wrestlefest to the other.

Most of these will involve NAWA, as it is the closest in my mind at this time. Anything relating to NAWA that I mention can be explored in further detail in the link in my signature.

1)Anything I've written involving Raven. His entire NAWA stint so far has been gold with the possible exception of his program with Shane Douglas(which was rather brief, maybe only three or four weeks all together). The Raven/Christopher Daniels feud has been brewing for a year(their match in the Gold Rush Tournament Finals was perhaps the best match I've ever written and also was rated ***** by TNM), then there was Raven's first run as NAWA World Champion where he had a pretty damn good program with Harry Harris that lasting three months(despite a handicap involving a character that I introduced just for the feud that I wish I wouldn't have in hindsight. I am referring to Harris's wife Kathlyn, who I have since dubbed the Stephanie McMahon of the NAWA). Also, Raven had a pair of short programs with CM Punk and the Dark Warrior(before anyone asks, yes the same guy as the Ultimate Warrior) that have both had their share of classic moments(The Warrior/Raven debate was my favorite non wrestling NAWA moment). Raven's my favorite wrestler to write in the NAWA(with Teddy Hart, Miles Stylish, CM Punk, and the Dark Warrior rounding out the top five).

Also, Ron Waterman's run as NAWA World Champion has so far been a blast to write, as has Teddy Hart's Cruiserweight Championship run. Also the Backyard Dudes/French Revolution(and the subsequent Richard Ramos Ricardo, Attorney at Law vs Twizted Youth feud) I enjoyed for my own sadistic reasons. Writing horrible matches is more fun than writing five star blow outs at times. Also, the Disco Inferno as Commissioner era of the NAWA resulted in introducing the world to Ron Waterman and Miles Stylish as main event players, so it has a special place in my heart.

Of course there were some things that never came to pass due to injury reasons that I wish did, as I felt they would be awesome(A Post WrestleClash II Miles Stylish/Raven program that was planned before Raven messed up his elbow, you could see the seeds slowly being planted for that feud if you go back and read the NAWA television leading up to WrestleClash II and the original plans for the Harry Harris/Miles Stylish/Jerry Lynn Triumvirate to name a couple off the top of my head).

2)Since about mid 2000ish.

3)Teddy Hart would be the epitome of champions that weren't supposed to be in the NAWA but he grew on me after a while. He wasn't supposed to be anymore than a transitional champion to AJ Styles but I had so much fun with him that I have kept the belt on him to this day.

Also, Norman Smiley's push to the upper level is to this day based on a cult like following he had from my five readers during the early days of the NAWA. He wasn't supposed to last six months but he has endured, picking up a couple of tag team runs and a couple of International title runs due to this initial popularity. Also, he lucked out again from being canned when Jeff Jarrett er sorry the Chosen One was injured(who lucked out when Harry Harris was injured and I needed to take the Dark Warrior out of his original role of the Archangels of Anarchy as the Warrior was plugged him into Harris's planned role in the Triumvirate) and I needed a replacement for Jarrett's program leading up to WrestleClash III with the Gambler. Thus Norman became Agony and he still has a job.

As for tag teams, I vaguely remember Van Hammer and the still Ultimate, not yet Dark, Warrior having a two week tag team title run in the early days of the NAWA(Of course I tend to avoid those 2002 shows like the plague, so it's been a while since I've read them). Also, The Armstrong Brothers would have had a tag team title run had Brad Armstrong not gotten injured on planned title reign number one and then quit before planned title reign number two. Also all three Backyard Dudes got a reign as NAWA World Tag Team Titles but I as for teams that worked well that shouldn't have, this question starts and ends with Lenny Lane and Juventud Guerrera. They started as a opened match comedy act and evolved into receiving a tag team title shot on the biggest show of the year. Also, the team of Excalibur and Hi Tech would be second place on the teams that caught on with me(and maybe others) but really wasn't planned to.

4)Pretty much anyone you see in the NAWA but also wrestlers who I'd love to bring in if they were fired by the WWE(for you new readers my rule is I can't use anyone working for the WWE in the NAWA) that I have used in other, non WWE,  circuits would be Shelton Benjamin, Snitsky(A Dark Warrior/Snitsky program would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, Spanky's finishing move nonwithstannding), The Undertaker, Carlito, Matt Hardy, Funaki, and Randy Orton.  Also Abyss, Monty Brown, Samoa Joe, The Naturals, Randy Savage, and DDP seem to be featured a lot my non NAWA circuits.

5)For some reason, Jeff Jarrett kept falling flat in the NAWA for me. He had a halfway decent heel run as World Champion at the beginning, had a few rematches with Shane Douglas, and then a match with Steve Corino at WrestleClash I that was pretty damn good. Then everything went to hell, up until the Chosen One gimmick. He went on a year run where he lost every Pay Per View Match he was in, before turning Heel, sucking even more, having a lackluster NAWA World title feud with Harry Harris(althrough I admit, the cage match blowoff was okay), having a program with Scott Hall that went nowhere before getting turned into the Chosen One by the Archangels. He has a couple of good matches with a pre-Agony Norman Smiley but then gets injured for months just when he was beginning to catch on with me.

The Ultimate Warrior before he became the Dark Warrior was also a royal pain in the ass to write. I maintain to this day that if I didn't get the idea to turn him into heel which caused him to be written as a more egotistical, self centered, rambling maniac that he is in real life, he would have been shown the door in late 2002.

6)Longest title reigns-Teddy Hart's reign as Cruiserweight Champion(nearly thirteen months as the 8/19/04 edition of Glory). Also Jimmy Yang had a one year and one week reign as Cruiserweight Champion predating that. Honrable mention goes to Sting's NAWA World Title run which lasted seven and a half months, Ron Waterman's current NAWA World Title run which is going on eight months right now, and Steve Corino's reign as NAWA International Champion which lastest seven months.

Shortest reign-Scott Steiner holding the NAWA World Title belt for ninety minutes. Jerry Lynn's second International Title reign lasting a mind blowing three days. Raven's second NAWA World title reign, a mind blowing seven day dynasty that Raven was stripped of due to being brutalized by the Archangels of Anarchy. Also Norman Smiley snuck in a week long run as NAWA World Tag Team Champion with both Jeff Jarrett and Terry Funk.

I always wanted to ask you if you were the guy who was behind the RY Incident once I got to know you from here (I've been a long time user, but I wasn't a regular on those boards in question) but never got around to it.  I'll answer these myself tomorrow, preferably when my girlfriend isn't glaring at me for being on the computer. :)
YunPosted on 07/25/06 at 18:23:45

1) Probably the Jushin Liger/Hayabusa mask vs. mask feud, the culmination of which was Eiji Eizaki vs Liger in a ladder match for Eizaki's Hayabusa mask.

I also enjoyed the Monty Python quoting gimmick for Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy, highlights of which included Jolly Roger accusing Jeff Hardy of killing his parrot, and referring to Super Dragon as the "Black Beast of Aaugh."

The best unplanned angle was the Taka/Funaki/Flying Kid Ichihara triangle. Taka no showed Kaientai's first match, so Ichihara came out as his replacement. Funaki and Ichihara started calling themselves Kaientai, but suddenly Taka returned and attacked Ichihara, accusing him of jumping him backstage. Funaki sided with Ichihara, thinking Taka had gone nuts. Naturally it turned out Taka was telling the truth, which led to an Ichihara heel turn and the reunion of the real Kaientai.

The best written angle, though, had Paul Heyman, representing an unnamed uber-rich patron (later revealed to be Shane McMahon) bringing Mankind out in an animal cage. Brian Kendrick befriended Mankind in a variation of the gentle monster/innocent young hero storyline, and eventually Kendrick and Red stole him from Heyman. The spent the next month fighting off Heyman's goon squad (Matt Hardy, Paul London, Matt Bentley, and Shawn Michaels) before McMahon hired a bounty hunter (The Rock) to recapture Mankind.

2) Since mid 2000. Since I saw a wrestling version of "March Madness" simmed on a smark site.

3) Not unusual per-se, but the Tag Team Titles jumping from Christian York/Joey Matthews to Joey Matthews/Shannon Moore to Jeff Hardy/Shannon Moore to Jeff Hardy/Chuck Liddell was somewhat amusing. The fact that Do Fixer couldn't beat any of these combinations made it even more amusing.

Excluding World Heavyweight Champion Amazing Red (this was back when I just pushed guys I liked rather than taking actual popularity into account) Two Time World Heavyweight Champion Gran Naniwa (who was crazy over) has to top the list of unusual champions.

4) In no particular order: Super Dragon, the Hardys, RVD, Raven, Jushin Liger, some form of Mick Foley, Kendrick and London

5) Sting always comes off a little more generically goth than he probably should. Also, pretty much any Japanese guy besides Liger, Hayabusa, and the Dragon Gate guys wind up as personality-less warm bodies just taking up space (this includes people I like like Muto, Kojima and Tajiri.)

6) RVD was World Champion for between six and nine months (don't remember the exact number.) On the other hand another circuit saw the World Title go from Sting to Gran Naniwa to Liger who vacated then to Muto back to Naniwa to Steve Austin in a span of three months. Austin was the only one of those to have a successful title defense.

7) You know you're overly engrossed in your own storylines when you book Austin vs Goldberg on free TV for the secondary title, and then only because Goldberg is ducking the real challenger (in this case, The Rock.) I didn't even realize anything unusual was going on until I was halfway through the match.
The PhantomPosted on 07/26/06 at 00:29:51

Kinda hard for me to answer some of these as I use a mix of real and created wrestlers but I'll try.

1. This goes back to my e-wrestling days but I used a wrestler called The Bad Guy (a ripoff of Scott Hall of course). After one match, the lights went off in the arena and then one single light came on. He became The Messenger and for the next few weeks, he could come out and preach to people about the right path. It didn't last long (people in the league didn't really react like I though they would) but I still like it. Then I saw Mordecai in the WWE and I was like WTF?!?! they ripped me off.

2. I've been using it since 1997. I don't use it everyday but it's a great program.

3. I have Vader and Cactus Jack in a Six Man Tag Team together and they work well, similar to their WCW days. As for champions, I have a woman team called the Blonde Bombshells that won the Tag Titles twice from men. Now women face women unless it's a mixed tag match.

4. Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Vader, Steve Austin, Muta, Chono. I know what I want to do with them so it's easier.

5. Ric Flair. I want him to do more but he can't seem to do it. I try not to book him against my created wrestlers because they are better, but he can't seem to win against the real ones.

6. Longest: I've had a champion for 15 cards before, about a card a week. Shortest: I've done this several times by accident. I have a rumble for a title and stick in a mystery opponent. That mystery opponent won a title earlier and then the person who won the rumble has two titles. Sometimes a heavyweight gets the lightweight title.

7. I have some jobbers on my roster and it's funny when they beat someone because they have the crappiest moves and lowest ratings you can have. I hit c to continue but it always gives me a laugh, especially when I have to hit c a few times. Maybe a Barry Horowitz angle could come into play at some point.  :D
Snabbit888Posted on 07/26/06 at 02:35:46

1) What is your favorite angle you've ever done in a circuit?

*** I liked Brock Lesnar's face turn and lead up to him winning the World Title in GCW from Kurt Angle.  It was well thought out and lasted for months and paid off with a big money match.  CM Punk as "Him" was interesting too, and I liked Eric Angle being the Black Tiger as well, which eventually turned Eddie Guerrero insane.

2) How long have you been using TNM?

*** Since may back in 1996.  I've been beta testing since around late '97 or '98.

3) Who are your strangest tag teams/champions that ended up working really well?

*** Bison Smith and David Flair worked well.  I'd say my current champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, are a bit strange as well.

4) Who are some wrestlers you love to use in TNM?

*** Kurt Angle.  I also think I use Lance Storm very well.  He's a staple in all of my circuits and I can write him very well I think.

5) Conversely, who are some wrestlers who no matter what, you can't seem to book them properly in your circuits?

*** Chris Candido I could never write.  Triple H I have trouble with too.  Same with Shawn Michaels.

6) Longest title reign?  Shortest title reign?

*** My longest title reign in a booked circuit with the format I have now is Monty Brown's North American Title reign which is at almost one year.  Gran Hamada was also my World champion in the old GLW for 10 months.  In an unbooked WWF circuit from way back when, Yokozuna held my Intercontinental Title for about 2 and a half years before getting injured.  I ran cards once a month like Oliver's old WWF circuit.

7) Anything else you want to add?

*** I love corn.
dabirdmanPosted on 07/26/06 at 08:15:26

1) What is your favorite angle you've ever done in a circuit?

Well this was in an E fed I  was in a few years back called RCW. This was with fake wrestlers so I'll try to set it up for you. I was a wrestlers known as Hawk and he was in a failed tag team known as Paid in Full. As the weeks went on Hawk got tired of loosing and one day durring a match he just walk out the ring leaving his partner to get his hide kicked. About a month later he comes back, new attitude knew look and said he was tired of carring his partner and decided to dump the trash and give the people what they wanted. He became Tony Bravo "The People's Choice" and was one of the most hated and loved wrestlers up till the fed closed down.

2) How long have you been using TNM?

Maybe about a year now but I've been in e feds that use TNM for maybe 3 years.

Who are your strangest tag teams/champions that ended up working really well?

So Far the strangest tag team I had that was successfull was Kamala and Sabu. they were known as the Funky Head Hunters and had the belt almost 6 months. This was non booked.

Who are some wrestlers you love to use in TNM?

I use to love some of the Big WWE names but I found that the smaller feds like TNA and ROA have some great talent you can realy get behind.

Conversely, who are some wrestlers who no matter what, you can't seem to book them properly in your circuits?

For some reason I can't get Hulk Hogan oer if I wanted. Each time I used him he either got bood or a dud rating. The same with Ricky the Dragon Steamboat.

Longest title reign?  Shortest title reign?

Longest so far has been AJ Styles and Chris Daniels in a fed Im doing off line, they are going on their 7th month.

Shortest was Shelton Benjamin. He won the belt on Sunday at a PPV and lost it the following monday.
MGDukesterPosted on 07/26/06 at 21:30:41

1) What is your favorite angle you've ever done in a circuit?
I honestly think I'm working on it now with the WCW DWO storyline and re-writing the NWO invasion.

2) How long have you been using TNM?
1997/1998

3) Who are your strangest tag teams/champions that ended up working really well?
Early on with TNM I always had fun with email style settings and having super tournaments with all the folks that I knew growing up and the new kids of the time.  It has been within the past year or so that I have really gotten into the concept of running circuits that I am running with a thought of doing write ups.  That said, I'd have to say that the most unexpected tag team I've had to succeed was Matt Hardy and Elix Skipper in my MGD fed I started posting last year.

4) Who are some wrestlers you love to use in TNM?
If real life timelines and mortality don't play into things, I was always a big fan of Perfectly Rude( Curt Hennig and Rick Rude) of the more current and active folks I use Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, Sheldon Benjamin, Batista.

5) Conversely, who are some wrestlers who no matter what, you can't seem to book them properly in your circuits?
As much as I have always enjoyed most of Chris Kanyon's work, I have the hardest time trying to make him work in my own writings.

6) Longest title reign?  Shortest title reign?
Longest? 7 Months - MGD Mayhem Tag Titles - Elix Skipper and Matt Hardy.
Shortest? I had a small 8 man tournament that Edge won for a secondary single title that he held for 12 minutes.  As  the tournament ended and Edge Celebrated,  Alex Shelly called in his golden ticket to challange Edge and beat him. (Not long after the original money in the bank match)

americamamushiPosted on 07/26/06 at 23:54:41

1) What is your favorite angle you've ever done in a circuit? Hmmmm... i think in DCW when Jimmy Jacobs was feuding with Raven and they shaved Jimmy's boots

2) How long have you been using TNM? Since 97 maybe? Can't recall

3) Who are your strangest tag teams/champions that ended up working really well?  Hmmm... of the top of my head in my NWA: St. Louis circuit i threw together Rocky Johnson and Kerry Von Erich and since it was a largely unbooked circuit, they ended up winning the tournament for the titles and holding them for a while instead of getting beaten in the first round.

4) Who are some wrestlers you love to use in TNM? Great Muta because he's my favorite wrestler of all time.  Also Jimmy Jacobs since I've known him from wrestling training all those years ago.

5) Conversely, who are some wrestlers who no matter what, you can't seem to book them properly in your circuits?  Sabu was one.  He always seems to get relegated down into a tag position, usually with like Sonjay Dutt as a team of Indian wrestlers or like Muhammad Hassan or Daivari as a team of Arab wrestlers.  And even then, the team never ends up being on the top of the tag division.

6) Longest title reign?  Shortest title reign? I believe my shortest real title reign was a day (Where the title was won, then lost, not won then stripped)  In several different circuits where I've done the traditional "weekly show, PPV a month" format I've had a title won on a PPV and then lost again the next night on TV.  Longest... I can't remember any real specifics at the moment, but I've had title reigns upwards of a year and a half or so, don't think I ever quite made it to 2 years though.

7) Anything else you want to add?  Snabbit loves corn.
