Match Rating

ZedjaPosted on 07/18/05 at 09:34:54

I don't really understand the rating that comes after the match. Is it to show what the fans thought of the show or who dominated the match?

I mean in the first case a -*** would be pretty bad, but in the second it would just show that the first wrestler booked in the match dominated it.

Please explain it to me.

Match rating indicates the actual quality of said match.  5 stars in like... match of the year quality, dud is like 0 stars, and negative 5 stars is like... so bad it'd make Frank Gotch vomit with rage.  I'm not sure what would be considered average quality or exactly everything that goes into figuring match ratings, those might be better left to Oliver or one of the TNMers that can remember some of the more technical aspects from Oliver explaining things in the past.  Average might be 2 stars? 1 or 2?  I'm not sure if the crowd type for the card has anything to do with the match rating or not, I want to say it might, but whichever way I side I'll be wrong. ;)  Hope that's helpfull untill someone more helpfull comes along.

Here's a handy ratings guide:

-*****: An abomination, a contender for Worst Match of the Year.  In the entire world.  Including Juggalo Championshit Wrestling.
-****: Spectacularly bad.  Several audience members have likely gnawed their own legs off to survive watching this match.
-***: Very bad.  Bradshaw & Trish Stratus vs. Christopher Nowinski and Jackie Gayda bad.
-**: Painful.  Smark Marks in the audience have gone into epileptic seizures at the sheer lack of workrate shown.
-*: Bad.  Slow, plodding, and boring.  Offensively so, but only just.
DUD: Lousy match with no real redeeming value.  A snoozer, but not something that will likely be discussed for too long on internet message boards.
*: Very basic match with some crowd heat and/or a few good spots.  Most squash matches get this rating.
**: Decent TV match.  Most RAW and SmackDown matches not involving Viscera or Heidenreich are around this rating.  The match is fun, but not particularly deep.
***: Good match.  A very solid match, well worked by the wrestlers and with some good crowd heat.  About the level of most RAW and SmackDown main events.
****: Excellent match.  Will be considered a "must see" by fans of your promotion, and will probably be among the best matches in a given year in your promotion.
*****: Match of the Year Candidate.  Joe vs. Punk.  Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker HIAC.  Chris Benoit vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels.  One of the best matches anywhere in the world in a given year.

At the very least, crowd type effects heat, and heat effects match quality.  So yes.  Crowd type will have at least some effect on match quality.
