Setting up a circuit roster

TerryFunkaPosted on 03/11/05 at 03:53:50

How do you go about selecting your roster when you first start a circuit? do you go the 'm' approach or do you go for the  x amount of high flyers, x amount of brawlers x amount of submission wrestlers to keep a roster even or what other methods do you use?

I do a general rule of 4 tag teams, 8 midcarders, 8 upper-midcard/main eventers.  Add 4-6 cruiserweights if I have a cruiser division.

I usually start with a base of 10 faces and 10 heels.  Sometimes randomly chosen, sometimes not.  I usually try and think of like 2 definite tag teams (or stables) and also a few other possibilities for teams if need be and build things up from there with the hiring of new wrestlers and such as I progress with having cards.  But the 20 man roster is usually what i start with

it depends. i just started out with 32 guys. five tag teams and then 22 singles. with that many guys you can have a few scrubs and then be able to establish a clear hierachy in your circuit.

Lately I've mainly been going with random generation, but in the past one of the methods I used for a circuit I ran for a few months was pretty unique.  I just watched Heat and Velocity for 2 weeks, then started a circuit with the idea that the wrestlers that appeared on those shows became disgruntled enough at being underutilized to leave WWE and start their own indie promotion.  Since I had this indy as a member of the NWA, I occasionally had NWA Champions show up on the show, and was eventually planning a cross-promotional angle with TNA.

It was pretty interesting.  My two biggest names were Rhyno (used as a monster heel) & Chris Jericho (the crowd favorite babyface).  I also used The Hurricane as a top level babyface, and actually elevated Crash Holly to the position as my top cowardly cheating heel by giving him A-Train as an enforcer.  Crash even won the title.  Then he died and I kinda lost the will to go on with that circuit because it felt disrespectful to me, and having him die as well would have really thrown a wrench in my plans.

I usually start with 16 wrestlers, eight heels & eight faces that I choose for whatever reason.  Since I run four shows a month (once a week), I have a four-week tournament for the circuit's primary title, and then just kinda go from there.

I wouldn't see it as being disrespectful to run a circuit with a dead wrestler - you could have worked that into your promotion and maybe had a yearly memorial show of some sort - or, since it's TNM, you just could have went on. It's fantasy and I often times like to use dead wrestlers. I even considered Crash as a possibility to bring into my CP circuit, but I thought of someone who would fit in better... but I didn't NOT pick him because he's dead.

As for choosing my roster, I usually go the random until I have 10 or heels or 10 faces, then I choose the remainder of either heels/faces to round out the roster.

However, I have one interesting circuit I ran. With my visualizer, I used pictures of the old rubber LJN WWF figures and I ran a circuit where the only wrestlers I could hire and work with were the actual LJN figures that I owned. As I would win some from eBay, they would become available for me to hire.

I kinda took a few things and kinda threw them into each other.  I took the idea of picking a few people I wanted to build the company around (I only picked one) and then did random from there.  I usually the do random for everyone else.  I have eight tag teams (4 matches) and then 12 singles (6 matches).  Then I build from there.  Sometimes I will go out and hire someone (I did this with Muhammad Hassan instead of having Daivari as a full time wrestler).  That is how I pick my most recent roster.  I also like to take a current roster and see what I can do with them from a certain point, like I did with Smackdown this summer.

I just download a bunch of wrestlers and throw them together in the biggest tournament I can make.  I always base my matches on ratings, too.

I've heard you say that before, and I know that's how you started LIW (love the circuit, btw)... but what do you mean when you say you randomly generate a roster? How do you go about doing that?

Generally I start with a roster of 20 wrestlers.  Here's how I select them.  I have a test circuit in email mode.  In that circuit, I book 2 tag team matches featuring all mystery wrestlers.  This gives me 4 tag teams.  For the rest, I book 2 tournaments.  1 with 8 wrestlers, and 1 with 4.  When TNM asks if I should let it choose the wrestlers, I say yes.  If any women wrestlers show up, I scrap the match and do it again until it's all eligable guys.

Thus, this gives you:
4 tag teams (8 wrestlers)
12 singles wrestlers (8 from 1st tournament, 4 from 2nd).

To continue the theme of randomness, I choose the guys who I bring in to LIW in a similar way.  Every now and then I run a random tournament in the test circuit and add all the wrestlers involved to the end of a big list.  I use wrestlers from this list in order (mostly) when I need to bring in new people.  This, along with the m key in circuits, gets you to use some guys that you normally wouldn't in new and interesting ways.
