Can TNM work on XP at all?

dmanfolifePosted on 07/16/07 at 07:24:40

Is there any way to play TNM on Windows XP?  I've searched and found nothing definitive on this.  I'd love to play again but dont see a way to make it work on my computer, any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I run XP and TNM works fine for me. I thought one of the selling points of TNM7:SE was that it was XP/Vista compatible.  Have you actually installed it and tried running it? If not, you may have to use a DOS emulator. I'm not an authority on that sort of thing, though.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/16/07 at 07:59:47

I assumed the same thing....I installed it, and when i run the .exe, a dos window briefly opens, then closes, and then nothing else.
lazy_duckPosted on 07/16/07 at 09:17:31

TNM worls fine on XP. I'm running it now on XP. After you install you can choose the TNM.bat file to run but it is recommended you open a command prompt (run>cmd) and on the command line type "TNM7" minus the quotes and you should be able to bring up the game.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/16/07 at 09:40:25

Wow, i really dont know what is wrong with mine. I d/l the game, unzip, and get the TNM7Se.exe icon in my folder...click that and get the dos pop up then it just goes away. I dont have anything else in the folder or anything (I see no TNM.bat file). I tried the cmd prompt....but when i type that it brings up my documents and settings followed by the area i can type in..which I type TNM7, but it doesnt work, says its not recognized as an internal or external command.....i have no idea whats wrong here, thanks for the help so far though, this is very weird.
lazy_duckPosted on 07/16/07 at 14:08:24

Where did you unzip TNM7SE to? sometimes if you try to run TNM from winzip it does that.
JakePosted on 07/16/07 at 18:25:19

(assuming you installed TNM7 to C:\TNM7SE)

Press Start.
Select Run.
Type "CMD"
Type "CD\TNM7SE"
Type "TNM"

:-)
dmanfolifePosted on 07/16/07 at 23:56:07

Ok i have it installed in the right place now, I had it in unzipped....now its in C:

Now i need to figure out when i go to RUN, then CMD, it brings up the Dos screen but it gives me:

C:\Documents and Settings\(MyName)>

as the prompt.  I'm not real familiar with Dos so can anyone tell me how i can just get it to come up as "C:"

I appreciate all the help guys.  Hope to be playin some TNM Tonight if i can get this fixed.
lazy_duckPosted on 07/17/07 at 00:09:32

Your at the right spot. at that command line just type TNM& and it should come up
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 02:40:32

Ok I type in "TNM7SE" which causes it to pause brifely, then just bring up the exact same prompt i stated above  ::).  I've tried putting the EXE file in my C: folder, and my documents and settings folder, and neither are working.  "TNM7" alone makes it say its not a recognized command.  TNM7SE is recognized but doesnt get it working...I'm lost.   >:(
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/17/07 at 05:01:17

Try putting the whole folder needs to be in C: not just the .EXE. Unzip and install TNM7 to C: so that when you open your C: drive there should be a folder called TNM7SE. If that is the case then follow Jake's DOS Prompt instructions and you should be set.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 05:07:06

When i Unzip the file into C:.....i only get the .exe, i dont get a folder.
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/17/07 at 05:30:01

So what you are saying is that you can't even install TNM?
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 05:32:48

I d/l from the site......save the zip on the C: folder......unzip onto the C: folder as well....and then i get the TNM7SE.exe after the unzip.  If i click on that, the DOS will open briefly, then just close.  If i try the run, cmd, etc. method.....that doesnt do anything either.
JakePosted on 07/17/07 at 14:54:20

When i Unzip the file into C:.....i only get the .exe, i dont get a folder.
What are you using to unzip the file?

Ok i have it installed in the right place now, I had it in unzipped....now its in C:

Now i need to figure out when i go to RUN, then CMD, it brings up the Dos screen but it gives me:

C:\Documents and Settings\(MyName)>

as the prompt.  I'm not real familiar with Dos so can anyone tell me how i can just get it to come up as "C:"
'Kay, when you're at the C:\Documents and Settings\(Your Name)> prompt
assuming your TNM7SE folder is named TNM7SE, if not then change accordingly
type CD\TNM7SE then press ENTER
type TNM then press ENTER
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 21:47:13

I use winzip to unzip the file.  And after unzipping, it only gives me the TNM7SE.exe, no folder, its just there by itself.  When i type CD\TNM7SE and hit ENTER it says the system cannot find the path specified.
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/17/07 at 21:52:54

Where are you unzipping the .EXE file to?
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 21:54:23

Directly to C:
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/17/07 at 22:23:08

So in the DOS prompt just type CD and that should bring it to C:   .    After you get it to C: type Run TNM7SE.exe
dmanfolifePosted on 07/17/07 at 22:28:37

I type CD....and it brings up the exact same documents and settings prompt.
suicidalbynaturePosted on 07/17/07 at 22:32:43

try CD C:\ or CD C
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 00:27:46

Ok i got the C: Prompt to come up. Now i type TNM7SE and it brings up the C: prompt again. If i type TNM7SE.exe the same thing.

Edit:  Should i be using something besides Winzip to unzip the file possibly??
JakePosted on 07/18/07 at 01:38:36

AHHHHHHH!

I've been misreading your posts.

My directions are for running AFTER you've installed.

Your problem is that it WON'T install.

Wow, I'm an idiot.

...

Hmm, thought there was a similar problem not that long back.

Anyways, the solution is to email Oliver about him sending you a zipped install. Then you'd simply unzip that somewhere and you could try that out.

If that doesn't work out, one of us could send it to you.

Let me find the "proper" email.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 01:43:01

LOL, maybe i'm asking the wrong thing.  Can anyone help INSTALLING?  haha.  Sorry for being a pain guys, this is crazy.
Rick GarrardPosted on 07/18/07 at 01:48:34

No offense intended here with this comment:

Anyone else remember when in order to use a PC you HAD to know how to use all the DOS commands?

That being said, you may have only got a partial download of the TNM file when you downloaded it, which may be what is preventing you from doing the complete install.  It's happened to me before and I've installed this silly little program over 20 times on various PCs over the last 10 years.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 08:23:04

This only gets worse.  SOO I try to delete and and try a fresh install..and when i try to delete the TNM7SE.exe icon, it gives me "cannot delete TNM7SE: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."   ::)

I've tried restarting, starting in safe mode, can't delete this at all.  Any ideas?
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 09:01:56

Ok i got the old EXE deleted, installed again, got the same result.  If i am getting a partial install, how do I fix that problem?

Have you tried re-downloading the install file from the TNM7 website and trying it again from the start?
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 20:43:20

Yes thats what i did last night....deleted the zip file and the exe. file and re-downloaded.  And am getting the same results.

What version of XP are you running? Home? Professional? Do you know if it's an OEM version or did it come pre-installed on your computer? Do you know if you have any of the Service Packs installed (1 or 2)?
dmanfolifePosted on 07/18/07 at 21:04:27

Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, came installed on this computer when i got it.
dmanfolifePosted on 07/20/07 at 01:33:17

No other ideas?  am i just SOL on playing TNM?    :-/
Rick GarrardPosted on 07/20/07 at 02:43:13

try emailing Oliver Copp, the creator of this sim. He is the man to talk to about such problems and may be of great assistance. You can find his email to be:

tnm-support@hexacon.de

Make sure that you put "TNM help needed" or something similar in the title of the email. He's usually pretty good about responding within a day or so since he is a very busy man with his work duties these days.

Let us know how it works out for you.
