Random wrestler generator...

TecmoNickPosted on 03/09/04 at 01:44:45

I remember playing an old sim several years ago, I think it was called The Wrestling Simulator...could be wrong.  Anyway, it could generate new wrestlers.  I guess it had a database of first and last names, as well as nicknames.  I was wondering if this was ever thought of as a possible feature in TNM?  Perhaps it could choose a name, then whether he is heel/face, then his style...and from the stlye it could randomly choose moves that suit him from your move database.  Anyone else think this would be cool?

Such a generator has been in the works for some time now.

The big challenge is matching moves with styles. Essentially, I have to go through all 600+ "typical" moves and assign all the styles to them. And that won't help if your TNM makes use of moves created by you or third parties.

This generator would hence also have to be a "style editor" which matches the move names with particular styles so random generation can work properly.

I know this isn't as simple as typing it on here, but what about adding a field in the move editor which would relate it to a finite number of styles and that would fit into a database somewhere. The field would ONLY relate to this random generator, so you don't have to alter as much code in the main program.

The problem with that is that I believe it's substantially harder to update your moves database than it is to update your Wrestler's database.  In other words, when you download new exports that contain moves you already have, I'm pretty sure it doesn't copy over them.  Therefore, even if Oliver did update his entire move database in this way:

1) It wouldn't include moves that other people had previously created

and

2) It would be very difficult to actually make it work on other people's computers without having them empty their entire database, or download a second copy of the program.

Essentially, Eric is very right. Moves - if present - aren't replaced to preserve changes made by the user. The deployment issue actually is even bigger than the issue of assigning styles to literally hundreds of moves.

In addition, it's a very subjective thing. Is a flying clothesline part of a high-flyer's repertoire? Or is it more a power move? Or even a brawling move?

Due to what Eric said, integrating a field into the main move database wouldn't help at all. If anything, there'd have to be a separate database for this kind of thing.

Again, it's far from impossible. It's just not something you make in a couple of free hours. I'll have to keep pushing this back at least until August (when I'll have four weeks of uninterrupted time off from my regular job).

It hasn't been forgotten and it definitely is coming :)

I know this is off topic now, but since WCW closed and I guess your contract that kept you from doing anything wrestling related ran out, I was wondering what your regular job is, is it still in wrestling?

I had no idea this had been brought up in the past, but I'm glad to see you had already put some thought into it.  It really would open up a new door for TNM...bring a lot of excitement into running circuits and giving personas to created guys.

I work as CTO for a company which owns and operates two national cable TV channels. The company is part of Barry Diller's media empire.

I also started as lead announcer for the German feed of the "Ultimate Fighting Championship" last year and am responsible for business development in the German-speaking area of Europe but my only wrestling-related task per se at this moment is as commissioner of a local wrestling promotion.
