Advice wanted

leftsaidfredPosted on 08/19/03 at 10:25:30

Hey all. I'm looking for a bit of advice.

I've been a wrestling fan for most of life; in fact, I remember being a big enough fan that I watched any show I had the chance to pretty much since I can remember.

However, around 1999, when things started getting all shock oriented and crap like that, I kind of faded away from watching it.

Anyway, I'm semi-getting into it again. I only say semi because I don't like the modern product much. I could go on concerning why I don't like it now, but that's another topic for another day. However, I find that I'm enjoying non-WWE things pretty well. I've been playing TNM7SE a lot, and have started running my first serious circuit ever at http://tnm.conforums.com (shameless plug alert!), and I'm really enjoying myself. I've also been playing around with EWR4.0 some and am having some fun with that. And I've even taking to scrolling around at a few web pages to read up a bit on the recent happenings.

However, I really don't have anything to watch, which is why I'm posting this. I have two tapes, count 'em, two wrestling tapes in my "collection," which happen to be the first two Survivor Series tapes. I'm potentially looking at expanding this in the future, though. So I would very much like some recommendations of tapes from those of you who are knowledgeable in this. These things need to be considered, though:

1) I'm in college, so I'm lacking in money a bit. Not enough where I can't afford anything, but I'll likely only be able to buy a $20 tape about once a month at the max.

2) I'm admittedly oblivious to anything that wasn't WWF or WCW, so while I would like to expand my horizons some, I'd be most "comfortable" with tapes from those two feds.

As sort of a 2a) to this, are there any websites where a newb could learn about Japan- and Mexico-based feds and their history?

3) Also, while I know a decent bit about late 80s/early 90s WWF and NWA/WCW stuff, I didn't really get to watch that much due to where I lived and other factors, so getting some tapes from this era would be a nice plus.

Other than that, as long as they're enjoyable, I'd likely be interested. I'd really appreciate any replies on this.

Thanks for your time, guys.

You really should look out for any compilation tapes that chronicle the 90's Hart Foundation (the stable, not the tag team) WWF era.  Some GREAT stuff came out of the period.

Fred,

First of all - it's good to have you back ;-)

Your two tapes are two of the best WWF tapes you can get - hands down. Survivor Series 87 remains my favorite PPV of all time.

If you're looking to broaden the horizon a bit, I'd recommend getting AAA When Worlds Collide which was a true classic.

SummerSlam 92 also was fantastic.

In more recent times, I greatly enjoyed WrestleMania 17 which has to rank right up there as one of the greatest shows from top to bottom.

Don't go for the FMW tapes. I myself got the Legend Dawns and didn't like it very much, and have heard almost nothing good about the other tapes. Only a match and a half would be good on each tape, which isn't worth it unless you're buying it for under $5.

That also being said, RF Video isn't good if you want high quality tapes. They do have a nice selection of things, though.
Fighter_HayabusaPosted on 08/19/03 at 19:19:00

RF is definitely not good. $20 per tape? Not to mention many many other issues people have with RF. There are many many cheaper, better sites. I go to highspots.com myself. Most tapes are $10, they tell you right in the match lists if matches are clipped, and delivery is FAST.

Just my 2 cents, no offense intended.

Which event had the Steamboat/Flair match...I think it was in '89...the one that's considered the greatest North American match of all time?

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoy both of them, but honestly, having only two options to watch gets old after a while, no matter how high quality the cards are that one owns.  :-/

Thanks for the input on where to buy from; actually, if I could get more info on this, it would be equally appreciated as well.

I want to thank everyone that replied, and I'd like to hear more recommendations. Thanks again.  ;D

I'm not sure which event had Steamboat/Flair but I heard that the full watch was on one of the HHH DVDs that came out last year.  Not exactly sure on that though.

Chi-Town Rumble and WrestleWar '89.  I know I'm probably missing something.  Go on Kazaa and see if you can find some matches.
CkzippyPosted on 08/22/03 at 01:55:31

Yeah, Kazaa has turned into a GREAT SOURCE for picking up single wrestling matches, I've found a TON of good stuff off of there.

Hey Oliver - since you're all about the first two Survivor Series, maybe you could fill me in on something:

Who the heck were the Conquistadors? I'd think that since they made it to the end of the tag team match, they would have been getting a semi-push of some sorts, but then again, I've never really heard of them. So were they any certain "name" wrestlers under those masks, and did they really matter in the WWF at that point in time?

Thanks for any info anyone could give, and oh, if anyone could suggest a good place to find tapes or DVDs other than highspots.com or RF Video, it would be very much appreciated.

Try these:

Bob Barnett: http://www.bobbarnett.com

BWF Video Vault: http://videovault.bwfonline.com/

XPWTVSean: http://www.houseofxtreme.com/topnotchtapes/

Blue Meanie Trader: http://www.bluemeanie.gq.nu/main.htm

ACW Mark Tapes: http://www.markstapes.homestead.com/

I suggest to stay away from RF Video. His quality occasionally bad (good if you are lucky), takes a long time with his orders, there's a possibility you will not get the tape. If you get a tape from him he might screw you around with bad picture quality or wrong tape. If you want send it back he wants to you pay for the shipping. He's a bad dealer.

Another person you must avoid at all cost is Craig Pekios. You must watch out from him. He goes under different names and have a site on several servers. He will rip you off big time.

Xtreme-Video isn't good. I still haven't received my tapes from him and its been over 3 months. Pretty much RF of the West.

The Conquistadors were Jose Estrada and Jose Luis Rivera.
John ProulxPosted on 08/22/03 at 17:55:28

By the way, Oliver, is the Jose Estrada on the exports page the Jose Estrada that was in The Conquistadors, and is that the same guy who was a WWF jobber in the 70s/early 80s, and also the same Jose Estrada who was in Los Boricuas? I was originally of the opinion that there was a Jose and also a Jose, Jr., but I'm not so sure now, as at least one site has said they are all the same person.

Thanks a lot for the help and info, every one. :)
