Too bad I can't read German.

Use Altavista.com's translate link, and then copy & paste the link over there. http://www.moongames.de/special/tnm7/interview.htm

Unfortunately, the translator ends up with broken English statements, like:

"MG.de: Erstmal generally to the entrance: When did you come the first time with the Wrestling into contact?

Olive Copp: I was added more or less like the virgin to the child."

If you can get over the translator's mistakes and choppy grammar, you'll be fine.

Hmmm, my knowledge of German is somewhat limited despite being part German myself, all I really gathered is that he went to the first Parade of Champions and was hooked, then he talks about the whole commentating thing and how he's... not very good at it?? (much like any online translator, what I'm reading is doubtless very choppy and nothing like what he's actually saying - after all, seeing as he did commentary here and there, I'd have thought he was quite good at it), 8 million people bought TNM7 in the first year (how is he NOT a millionaire), then there's some boring technical stuff which we'll skip through. Then he talks about other simulators, probably badmouthing the competition. :P And finally I think he mentions something about a second edition something or another. No idea what that's about.

Oh yeah, and that is one creepy picture. ;D Someone tell me who he looks like.
TecmoNickPosted on 07/04/03 at 02:45:40

I believe he says that 8 million people downloaded TNM.

As for the picture, I'm not really seeing any resemblence jump out at me.  At a quick glance I can see Jason Giambi with glasses, but I may be pushing it there.

You have to mark for "Olive" Copp.  ;)

And very right you are :-)

As for the interview, here's a few bullet points that may be relevant and/or interesting (some from the interview, some giving background on things said there for people who don't watch wrestling on German TV every day *g*)

- I grew up in El Paso living next to the Guerrero family (actually, Mando and wife and Chavo with wife and kids)
- NWA Parade Of Champions was the first show I ever went to.
- I started out as a hotline host for shootfighting but then switched over to announcing for ECW, WCW and Smoky Mountain a year later.
- I never wanted to make the switch because I was used to working in wrestling journalism. As an announcer, you're part of the show and have to sell, sell, sell to make the product seem better than it is. As a journalist, you pick it apart. Diametrically opposed indeed.
- Due to great coaching by two colleagues, I picked it up quickly, though, and ended up being voted best German announcer in both 2000 and 2001 before quitting in early 2002.
- The door to start working in commentary again still is open, with a couple of new options from the MMA field having popped up recently.
- The idea behind TNM was born during a phone call with the then-owner of a wrestling promotion who kept complaining that computers were nothing he'd ever find useful. I set out to prove him wrong.
- 14 million TNM downloads total, 8 million TNM 7 downloads over the past four yeas.
- I don't see the competition many people think is going on between Adam Ryland's EWR, Promotion Wars and TNM since both EWR and PR are in a totally different area of wrestling simulation than TNM is. Zeus would have been considered the closest competitor but it's on hiatus at this point.
- 70 percent of all customers come from the US, Canada, the UK and Australia/New Zealand. The other 30 percent are split evenly among the other countries with the only exceptions being South Africa (4 percent) and Japan (4 customers).
- I didn't upgrade TNM's interface from DOS to Windows because the source code is too big to just convert it over to Windows on-the-fly. I rather wanted to invest the time into making new features than spending close to a year converting a program to a new user interface without adding ANY features whatsoever in the process.
- There never had been plans to release another TNM 7 after the original one. This was largely due to my expanding duties in wrestling both on-air and behind the scenes.
- There won't be a TNM 7 - Third Edition anymore, though. The end of the line has been reached with DOS-based programming. If there's going to be another version at any point, I will bite the bullet and re-engineer from the beginning. However, this will largely be determined by the sales of TNM 7 Second Edition. If there is no indication that a WinTNM would be a commercial success, judging from a professional perspective, there's no point in investing the time.

Viva WinTNM! :) On a serious note I think that "WinTNM" could reach to a new audience. DOS turns a lot of people off.
pszPosted on 07/04/03 at 15:03:07

I agree with DOS being a turn off to people.

It's not that people don't want/like text-based sims, it's DOS they hate.

Perfect example: Championship Manager. It's a football(soccer for you yanks) management sim. It's INSANELY popular (Has it's own magazine!).

It's not much more than a text based sime with pretty backgrounds :->

And the most recent version of it was full of so many bugs, even though it sold millions upon millions of copies, it should absolutely never have been released until they sorted them all out. It kinda makes you appreciate TNM when you consider the lack of bugs otherwise.

This is true - CM is a great text game, but the last version was definitely full of bugs.  I, for one will support the investment made to Windows though, I just think there's a few new avenues to explore that may make the general appearance of TNM more user-friendly, which in turn would appeal to a bigger audience.

I would rather play OOTP (Out of the Park Baseball) than fooling around with the graphical console versions anyday.

And TNM would fall in that department too.

Shane Douglas said that he doesn't want you to make WinTNM!  You have to do it just to spite him!

Heh, I'm still running CM 01/02... Haven't played with 4 yet at all ;->
LillaThrillaPosted on 07/16/03 at 01:01:28

I hate to say it, but right now WinTNM isn't worth it.  Now, on the other hand, if pro wrestling in the USA takes off again and we've got lots of new people and lots of renewed interest then I think it'll be worth Oliver's while to make WinTNM.

But... but... you don't want Shane Douglas to win, do you?  ;D

Douglas can go burn another bridge and attempt to rebuild it back.
