Question for Oliver regarding wrestlers quitting

Fighter_HayabusaPosted on 07/02/03 at 15:10:44

Hi Oliver,

How does TNM decide whether someone quits/gives notice/etc?  Is it just random, or is the wrestler's booking involved?

One time I was running a small indy and my top champion kept quitting.  Not one guy, either.  I mean whoever won the belt quit soon after.  Maybe Vince was signing my champions away!   ;D

It's 50 percent random, 50 percent a result of your booking.

If the wrestler is not comfortable with the people he's put against, that's a turnoff. As is forcing him to wrestle injured.

Would I be right in guessing that's based on wrestlers pushes?

That's one aspect but not the only one. If a wrestler keeps having stinkeroo matches with another wrestler and the booker insists on keeping them wrestling one another, that's also a factor.

In other words, a performer wants to be facing people on the same level as him (or better if your name is 'Kevin') in terms of both push and workrate (appreciating the fact that workrate isn't the only factor in calculating match ratings, but go with me there). Much like real life come to think of it. Now all we need are mad Canadian fans jumping into the ring from the crowd and this'd be the most realistic sim ever.

In other words, wrestlers want to face people who'll make them look good. If there's a proven track record of a certain combination simply not meshing stylistically and you insist on putting them in the same ring again for a prolonged period of time, wrestlers will start getting annoyed.

Funny side note - I tried to do a program with Steamboat and Muta some time back and it simply didn't *feel* right for some odd reason. Two great wrestlers, yet the matches were boring and generally didn't get good ratings either. I almost thought it was due to a bug in the system. Then I rewatched the Steamboat-Muta match from Japan and... it sucked ;-)

It's amazing how deep this program actually is. It's also interesting to see how wrestlers seem to mesh so much better with some than others, yours being a good example there. I also had a few Curt Hennig/Chris Benoit matches come out very dissapointingly for example. I guess they don't gel or something.

Also I had Barry Windham teaming up with Ric Flair a lot during a Horsemen period I did and whilst their matches were fairly good, they were nothing special. Despite this, previously I had Barry Windham teaming with Ted DiBiase who while is an excellent worker, he probably isn't quite the same standard as Flair. Despite this, their matches weren't just better than the Windham/Flair's matches, they were absolutely phenomenal.
