Still waiting

PHPNinjaPosted on 06/06/03 at 00:19:28

Mr. Copp, I'm still waiting for you to answer my question from the PWSE forums. I really want to know who gave you permission to disassemble their program.
pszPosted on 06/06/03 at 00:54:35

And he already answered you:

I promised the authors beforehand that I wasn't ever going to disclose which sim works in what way, so I'm afraid I have to decline this request. Just as a pointer - all sims I looked at (five) have been out for at least one year.
PHPNinjaPosted on 06/06/03 at 01:00:55

I don't see that anywhere in the topic where I asked the question. Where did you find that at?

I can understand him not wanting to reveal how a program works, but why can't he just give a list of the sims he looked at? That's all I want to know but he's been avoiding me.
SnDvls316Posted on 06/06/03 at 01:05:24

Because by him naming the "five" ones he looked at he would be naming all of them and thus breaking the promise he made to the programers.

What's the big deal anyhow?  Take you beef to another place you won't recieve any support here.
PHPNinjaPosted on 06/06/03 at 01:35:47

I'm not trying to get support here. The reason I'm here is because Oliver Copp stopped answering me and I figured he just stopped visiting the site so I decided to come to his site and ask him.

Naming them all off wouldn't be breaking his promise to keep how they worked secret. I think the programmers would be happy if he dropped all the names. It'd be a sort of endorsement from him that their sims were at least worth looking at.

Did he look at Zeus Pro? If he did, I could ask Brian if he asked for permission. That's all I want - verification from those programmers that he asked for permission to disassemble their program. If he didn't ask for permission, what he did is illegal; just like people pirating TNM is illegal.
Oliver CoppPosted on 06/06/03 at 02:08:32

What part of "no" don't you understand ? Zeus was of no interest whatsoever to me in that regard because it doesn't meet the key definition of "living" in the sense of "constantly in development".

It wouldn't be prudent revealing which sims I was referring to after promising not to mention any details (especially since I was somewhat critical of them). I won't go back on my word, no matter whose feathers it ruffles... not that it's anybody's business anyway except their and mine.

FYI, the whole "proving a point" you're trying to do is obsolete because where I live, there's something called the "freedom of information act" which specifically prohibits outlawing things such as disassembling. What one isn't allowed to do is alter the code or use the gathered information to use a program beyond what the author had intended or to reveal it to third parties. The latter can be considered slander.

I'll post a reply on PWSE when time permits. At the moment I'm busy as a bee on other things more important than arguing back and forth.
PHPNinjaPosted on 06/06/03 at 02:29:20

So you looked at sims that are still being updated? I don't see how you could compare these new sims to TNM since they aren't designed to simulate matches like TNM. They are completely different. These new sims attempt to simulate the business end. If you're wanting to look at sims similar to TNM, then you're going to have to disassemble sims that aren't being updated anymore.

Even if a program is copyrighted in another country, you can disassemble it and bypass the protection of that copyright? That seems lame to me, but I'll believe it.

I'm just going to give up on getting these names from you. I'll just ask the developers themselves. You said they were some of the more interesting ones and I think I can find those pretty easily.

I still don't get why you'd have to disassemble the program if they gave you permission to see what they did. I'm confused now more than ever since these newer sims aren't even related to TNM and the author definitely shouldn't mind on letting you see the code since you're not working on a rival promoter sim.

I got the quote from the last post Oliver did on the PW2 thread :->
PHPNinjaPosted on 06/06/03 at 17:08:36

Just read that topic.

So he didn't look at PW. What sims did he look at then? The only other "interesting" sims out there are EW and some of the older sims. But he didn't look at the older sims so he must have looked at EW. I talked to Adam Ryland and he said that he never gave Oliver Copp any sort of permission.

I could list five things and say that one of them was terrible. There is doubt on which one I thought was terrible. Take a guess at which one I thought was terrible from this list.

Xbox
PlayStation 2
GameCube
Gameboy Advance
Dreamcast

If you guessed PlayStation 2, you're right. What's wrong with him listing all the names? What he thought of them is still unknown and it wouldn't be breaking any sort of agreement he made with the developers about keeping how their sim worked confidential.
ScottHallMarkPosted on 06/07/03 at 07:35:43

Dude, it's a dead issue, give it a rest already.
Fighter_HayabusaPosted on 06/09/03 at 15:30:52

PHPNinja: What sims did you look at?  Tell me.

Oliver: No

PHP: Please

Oliver: No

PHP: But...

Oliver: No

PHP:  Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

Oliver: No

PHP: Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

FH: This thread took precious minutes from my life.  Minutes I will never get back.  PHPNinja, why do you care?  Are you the programmer of one of those lame sims that are just random?  Honestly, why does this matter to you?  Please go away.  You keep asking the same thing, just in different, more absurd ways, trying to justify how "reasonable" your request is, and Oliver will not answer you.  Period.  The end.  Please stop wasting everyone's time.

Thank you

FH

This thread has been totally devoid of any use to any of us.......until now. Thank you, FH, for at least making this thread worth something......even if it is just to make us laugh !!!

;D
LillaThrillaPosted on 06/12/03 at 01:46:48

Thanks for the laugh FH.  I'm going to lock this thread now as its obviously expired whatever point it had.

And PHPninja, please keep well behaved during the remainder of your stay here and don't waste everyone's time hounding Oliver.   No means no - live with it.
