You lucky Windows users

Hey guys,

I was just surfing the boards and reading all of the suggestions for TNM7, such as plugins and how TNM might (or might not) make the jump to Windows when DOS finally bites the dust.

I say lucky Windows users because I'm on a Mac (my profession almost requires it) .

I wanted to use TNM so I purchased a copy of Real PC, which emulates the DOS environment on the Macintosh. I also had the option of using SoftWindows to emulate the Windows enviornment, but I never bothered since TNM is a DOS app.

On a side note, it always make me laugh when I see posts about how TNM is "too expensive" and the  like. Well I paid the registration fee, as well as the $50.00 (CAN)  fot Real PC, and it was worth it.

Anyway, I say lucky Windows users because if TNM does use Windows more and more I may have to shell out the cash to get a bottom based PC. TNM still works great for me regardless however.

The only problem that I have is that my TNM has never, ever, recognized plugins, and the only assumption I have is that somehow the code gets screwed up when downloading from the net off a Mac, and then taking it into a PC emulator.

Other  than that downer, TNM has been great, and it's fantastic to see the site and the community alive and well.

If you can find a cheap 386 or 486, TNM will run even on those.  Yes... I did not say Pentium... or Celeron.  I said 386 or 486... You can usually find these older comptuers dirt cheap and TNM will run on them as long as they have a copy of MS-DOS on them that is 6.0 or higher I believe.

Well I thought of that  just so I could get the plugins to work, but then I would have to use it to get on the net as well, and it probably isn't worth the effort at this point.

486 is okay, but I advise against trying to use TNM on a 386.  It goes...so...slow.... :(

Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your experiences.

There's two things to say:

1) Every new release will be Windows-based from this point forward - it's just the flow of things now that DOS is becoming more and more extinct. I may even end up releasing Windows versions of certain components of TNM 7 such as the match scheduler and the ControlCenter.

2) The core TNM 7 functionality (i.e., the match engine) will remain DOS-based because converting to Windows would be far too complex given the completely different programming paradigm in Windows (event-driven vs code-driven).
