8/3/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - TULSA, OK

1)      Harley Race was standing in the middle of the ring when we came on the air, and he had a couple of announcements regarding Summer Sizzler on August 28.  Two more matches have been signed - The Road Warriors take on Demolition and Strike Force meeting The Brainbusters.  He also said that second match may end up being a World Tag Team Title match as Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard challenge the British Bulldogs in our main event tonight.  Race was also going to levy a fine on Ted DiBiase for his actions last week as the referee for the Flair/Von Erich World Title match, but KERRY VON ERICH himself stopped Race and said a far worse punishment would be to make the Million Dollar Man wrestle him at Summer Sizzler.  Race agreed, and so Von Erich vs. DiBiase has been added to the card.

2)      Non-Title Match - Intercontinental champion Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Pez Whatley after the Rude Awakening in 4:15. "Ravishing" Rick is becoming obsessed with proving his superiority over The Ultimate Warrior, and clips were shown of his jealous attack on the Warrior in their recent bench press challenge.  Rude did look impressive tonight, but he made a lot of mistakes he wouldn't normally make, a sign of trying too hard.  He would take the victory over Pistol Pez when he hit the Rude Awakening, but he looked a little rattled that it took him as long as it did. *** ½

3)      Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) defeated "Iron" Mike Sharpe & Reno Riggins when Ax pinned Sharpe after a swinging neckbreaker in 3:52. Demolition and The Road Warriors are on a collision course at Summer Sizzler, and it's good that this match has finally been signed as it is starting to get dangerous for both teams.  Hawk & Animal did an insert promo during this match, essentially saying that Demolition is copying them and that they were the true dominating team in the UWF.  Both teams will have the opportunity to prove that at Summer Sizzler.  Ax & Smash, meanwhile, showed they are dominating as well by plowing through Mike Sharpe & Reno Riggins in short order. * ½

4)      We cut backstage where we were mid-argument between Randy Savage and Elizabeth.  Well, it wasn't so much an argument as it was Savage yelling at Elizabeth for talking to Bam Bam Bigelow last week and costing him his match against Koko B. Ware.  Elizabeth tried to apologize saying that Bigelow came and talked to her.  The Macho Man calmed down a little before Elizabeth said that Bigelow and her were "just friends."  Savage flipped out again and said she doesn't want Elizabeth even looking at Bigelow.  Elizabeth apologized again and said it would never happen again.

5)      Sid Vicious defeated Louis Spicolli with the Power Bomb in 48 seconds. Sid is a sick, sick man.  He has been on a killing spree of sorts since he has targeted Dusty Rhodes, stretchering individuals out every week.  This week's victim was Louis Spicolli, who lasted all of 48 seconds before being driven into the mat with the Power Bomb.  As has been his custom, Sid continued the assault after the match, but before he hit Spicolli with a second and third Power Bomb, he put a Dusty Rhodes shirt on him, clearly sending a message to the American Dream. *

6)      HULK HOGAN sat down with Gorilla Monsoon earlier in the week for an interview.  Monsoon asked the Hulkster how he was feeling, and Hogan was honest and said not good.  "My back's pretty messed up, brother."  Hogan said he would have to rehab and see a lot of specialists, but he guaranteed that there was nothing that could prevent him from facing Ric Flair and becoming the new World champion at Summer Sizzler.

7)      Lex Luger made Jim Neidhart (w/ Jimmy Hart) submit to the Torture Rack in 7:54. Harley Race banned everyone who didn't have a manager's license from ringside, which had to be a big advantage for Lex Luger, only having to worry about Jimmy Hart.  Luger also had the advantage in that Neidhart is primarily a tag team wrestler.  The Anvil put a hurting on the young Luger, but Luger's raw strength allowed him to lock in the Torture Rack on the massive Neidhart and get the submission victory.  Luger didn't get long to celebrate as he was jumped by ONE MAN GANG, BIG BOSS MAN, & BRET HART.  The odds were evened when THE BRITISH BULLDOGS came out, but they were overtaken too before GREG VALENTINE came down and made it 4-on-4.  The faces cleared the ring and stood tall in the ring, sending the Hart Family running to the back. **

8)      The Italian Stallion defeated Terry Funk by countout in 49 seconds. Terry Funk is furious, and rightfully so.  Right after this match started, there was a ruckus in the crowd which turned out to be DANNY DAVIS once again trying to get into the building.  Funk is a loose cannon to begin with and after knocking Stallion down with a bodyslam, Funk jumped into the crowd and chased after Davis.  He never got his hands on Davis who smartly ran away, but Funk did get counted out, losing this match to the Italian Stallion.  Stallion celebrated like he just won the World Series, but paid for it when Funk returned to the ring and drove him into the mat with a piledriver. *

9)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated The Brainbusters when Smith pinned Blanchard with the Running Powerslam in 24:27. Match of the year candidate right here.  The World Tag Team Titles were on the line in our main event, and the British Bulldogs had their work cut out for them against Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard, who wanted to bring more gold to the Horsemen.  For nearly 25 minutes, these two teams put on a classic and one that will surely be talked about for a long, long time.  By the end of this match, there wasn't a person sitting down in the audience and the tension and drama could be cut with a knife.  When all was said and done, an exhausted Davey Boy Smith surprised Blanchard with his Running Powerslam.  Dynamite Kid cut Anderson off with a flying dropkick and the Bulldogs remained undefeated and kept the World Tag Team Titles.  Both teams were given a well-deserved standing ovation as we went off the air. **** ½

Another strong card from the UWF.
Snabbit888Posted on 11/25/08 at 22:33:06

Thank you, sir.  This is pretty hard for me to book, actually.  I'm so used to doing a PPV every month that it's been hard to slow build some of this stuff.  I don't feel like I'm doing it as well as I could, but doing it better than I thought I would, if that makes sense. :)
Larry MondelloPosted on 11/25/08 at 23:24:21

Keep up the good work.  I think that the real challenge is in the slow build.  It's pretty much a lost art these days to have the old fashioned slow story progression.  Definitely captivates the readers more and leads to a bigger payoff in the end.

8/10/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

1)      Harley Race was already in the ring when we went on the air, and he started with an announcement of an 8-man tag team match for Summer Sizzler, pitting Lex Luger, the World Tag Team champions The British Bulldogs, & Greg Valentine going against One Man Gang, The Hart Foundation, & Big Boss Man.  Race also addressed the Danny Davis situation, saying he couldn't have him disrupting all of these shows while he was still suspended.  Race came to a decision and said Davis will be reinstated... IF he wrestles Terry Funk on August 27th at the Summer Sizzler Showdown on the USA Network!  And better yet, if he didn't wrestle, Danny Davis would be fired!  SID VICIOUS came out to join Race, and he didn't look happy.  Sid wanted Race to make another match, he vs. Dusty Rhodes for Summer Sizzler!  Race said he would but he hasn't heard from Rhodes in weeks.  Sid reminded Race about his recent reign of terror, and said that Race better make the match or he would be the next person to join the victim list.  Race didn't appreciate being threatened, but Sid grabbed Race by the collar.  Before he could do anything, DUSTY RHODES ran out from the back for the save, sending Sid scurrying from the ring.  Dusty tried to get at Sid, but Race held him back.

2)      Big Boss Man (w/ Jimmy Hart) pinned Barry Horowitz after a splash in 3:51. We saw the in-ring debut of Jimmy Hart's new hired muscle, Big Boss Man.  Boss Man was extremely impressive, toying around with Barry Horowitz before pinning him with a splash.  Jimmy Hart seems to have found a winner here. ** ½

3)      The Road Warriors defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion when Hawk pinned Stallion with the Flying Clothesline in 2:50. Hawk & Animal were in a foul mood tonight and took it out on Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion.  It wasn't much of a competitive contest as this one was clearly in Hawk & Animal's control.  I don't know what's got them so fired up, but I really wouldn't want to be Demolition in Chicago. ** ¾

4)      Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) pinned Koko B. Ware after a Russian legsweep in 8:04. Ted DiBiase learned the hard way two weeks ago that he couldn't buy off Kerry Von Erich, and instead screwed the Texas Tornado out of the World Title.  DiBiase is getting really cocky with his ability to spend money, as shown by his offering Koko B. Ware $1000 to walk out for the countout.  Koko refused and instead took the Million Dollar Man to the limit.  What Koko didn't have was someone watching his back at ringside, as Virgil tripped him up.  This let DiBiase hit a big Russian legsweep to get the pin.  DiBiase & Virgil continued with the beatdown of Koko until KERRY VON ERICH ran in and cleared the ring of the heels. **** 1/4

5)      The saga of Intercontinental champion Rick Rude trying to best The Ultimate Warrior continued tonight with an arm-wrestling challenge.  Rude appeared to have the advantage early, but it became clear that the Warrior was toying with him when he turned the tide and almost pinned Rude's hand down when BOBBY HEENAN raked Warrior's eyes!  Rude quickly hit Warrior with the Rude Awakening.  Rude took the time to swivel his hips, not even noticing that it barely affected Warrior.  Rude turned right into a clothesline from Warrior, followed by the Gorilla press.  The Big Splash was upcoming, but Heenan nailed Warrior with a forearm to the back - which did absolutely nothing.  Heenan received a fist to the mouth for his troubles, but Ravishing Rick was able to get out of Dodge.

6)      Virgil defeated Bam Bam Bigelow by disqualification in 1:38. Bam Bam Bigelow wasn't looking to win this match - he was looking to send a clear message to Randy Savage.  Virgil didn't even get in a single offensive move before Bigelow decimated him with a vicious chair shot - a clear disqualification.  Bigelow threw the chair down and yelled, "You're next, Savage!" **

7)      The Colossal Connection (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Strike Force when Andre pinned Martel after the Big Elbowdrop in 9:23. Heenan was still shaken up after his confrontation with The Ultimate Warrior earlier, but he still was able to manage his Colossal Connection to victory over Strike Force.  In all truthfulness, Tito Santana & Rick Martel out wrestled their counterparts, but like many have in the past, it's just so hard to overcome the size of Andre the Giant.  Strike Force tried everything they could but they just couldn't get the big man off his feet.  The Colossal Connection win after the savate kick/elbowdrop combo on Martel. ***

8)      The Horsemen (minus Sid Vicious) came out for an interview.  The Brainbusters said they came within an eyelash of winning the World Tag Team Titles from the British Bulldogs last week, and they were petitioning to get another title shot ASAP.  But they said their next plan was to do to Strike Force at Summer Sizzler even worse than the Colossal Connection just did.  World champion Ric Flair took the mic and put over his title defense against Hulk Hogan at Sizzler, again mentioning Hogan's injured back.  Flair warned Hogan that if he was stupid enough to try to wrestle at Summer Sizzler, the Horsemen would make sure that it would be the last time he ever wrestled.  At this point Flair was interrupted by BRUTUS BEEFCAKE, who we hadn't seen in months thanks to an injury.  Beefcake said he saw what the Horsemen did to his good friend Hulk Hogan, and he wasn't going to stand for it.  The Barber challenged Ric Flair to a match next week on High Voltage, which Flair has accepted.

9)      Lumberjack Match - One Man Gang pinned Lex Luger with the 747 Splash in 11:04. In a UWF first, we had a lumberjack match pitting Lex Luger against One Man Gang.  The lumberjacks were the other individuals who will be involved in the 8-man tag team match at Summer Sizzler.  The strategy early on in this match was simple - take your opponent and throw them to the outside in enemy territory so they could put the beatdown on them.  This happened often both ways until eventually things broke down on the outside and the lumberjacks began fighting with each other!  During the confusion, OMG squashed Luger in the corner and followed up with the 747 Splash for the 1-2-3 to end the broadcast. *

8/17/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - WICHITA, KS

1)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated The Road Warriors when Smith pinned Animal with a Victory Roll in 13:09. During the week, Hawk & Animal demanded a World Tag Team Title shot, and sensing what a great match it would be, Harley Race signed it and put it up front on High Voltage.  A contrast of styles in this one that mixed into a really solid match.  When Hawk & Animal are on the offensive, there is no team in the world that can compete with them.  But their defense is their weak point, and the Bulldogs used that to their edge the majority of this match, keeping the brutes off-balance.  The Road Warriors got the edge back and had Davey Boy Smith set up for the Doomsday Device when DEMOLITION came down to the ring and taunted them.  This distraction was enough for Davey Boy to reverse when Hawk jumped off for the clothesline, ducking out of the way and catching Animal by surprise with a Victory Roll for a successful title defense. *** ½

2)      The Ultimate Warrior pinned Barry Horowitz the Big Splash in 1:13. The Ultimate Warrior continued his hot streak going into his Intercontinental Title match by dismantling Barry Horowitz in short order.  Rick Rude is going to need everything in his bag of tricks to retain the gold at Summer Sizzler. *

3)      Terry Funk joined "Mean" Gene Okerlund for an interview.  Funk kept it brief, simply saying his months of frustration over Danny Davis screwing him over will come to an end on the Summer Sizzler Showdown.

4)      The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Lex Luger & Greg Valentine when Hart pinned Valentine with an elbowdrop from the second turnbuckle in 12:13. Lex Luger & Greg Valentine will be joining forces as part of the 8-man tag team contest at Summer Sizzler, but they wanted a piece of the Hart Family tonight, taking on the Hart Foundation.  Luger & Valentine had some kinks working together, but got in a lot of offense.  However, Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart are a far more experienced team and used that tag team ability to pick up the victory.  We later learned that because of this victory, Harley Race has granted the Hart Foundation a World Tag Team Title shot against the British Bulldogs at the Summer Sizzler Showdown. ***

5)      Bobby Heenan was all smiles as he and his Heenan Family did an interview.  Heenan said that they were the premiere group in wrestling today, and having the Intercontinental Title was a huge part of that.  Rick Rude said that The Ultimate Warrior could huff and puff all he wants, claim to get the better of the Ravishing One in bench press competitions and arm wrestling contests, but when the dust settled, Rick Rude would still be the Intercontinental champion.  Heenan also said he was still petitioning the Championship Committee to grant the Colossal Connection a World Tag Team Title match, citing that no team could match their sheer size and power.  Heenan was confident that Race would make the right decision and grant his men the title shot they deserve.

6)      Kerry Von Erich & Koko B. Ware defeated Ted DiBiase & Virgil when Von Erich pinned DiBiase with the Tornado Punch in 7:36. Kerry Von Erich & Ted DiBiase meet in singles competition at the PPV, but they had Koko B. Ware & Virgil respectively for a tag team match tonight.  All I can say about this one is - not a good night for the Million Dollar Man.  DiBiase has done very well at getting under everyone's nerves, and unfortunately for him, he doesn't have the necessary backup.  Sure, Virgil makes a great second and has been instrumental in a lot of DiBiase's success, but he hasn't shown in active competition that he can get it done.  He wasn't of much help for DiBiase, who ate a mouthful of the Tornado Punch from the Texas Tornado and a 3 count.  This could be a sign of things to come at Summer Sizzler. *** ½

7)      Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) pinned Pez Whatley after the Flying Elbowdrop in 2:30. Clips were shown from last week of Bam Bam Bigelow's vicious assault on Virgil with a steel chair last week, a clear message being sent Randy Savage.  The Macho Man was looking to send a message of his own, and he did so with a thorough drubbing of Pez Whatley, putting his shoulders to the mat after the Flying Elbowdrop.  Savage continued the message with not one, but two more Flying Elbowdrops.  This one-upping is all going to come to a head at Summer Sizzler. ***

8)      Dusty Rhodes came out to give a passionate interview about what he and his family have been going through the past few months.  Dusty said it has been extremely difficult, and though Dustin Rhodes is improving, he may never fully recover from that vicious Power Bomb on the concrete floor from Sid Vicious.  Dusty said he thought about retiring, saying he had a long great career and that this put a sour taste in his mouth.  SID VICIOUS himself came down with a microphone as well, not daring to get in the ring.  Sid had a sick sadistic smile on his face, and he had the audacity to tell the American Dream how good it felt to hear Dusty's son's skull and back crack against the concrete floor, knowing he ended a career before it even got a chance to start.  This sent Dusty into a rage who said he'd do anything to get his hands on Sid.  Sid said all he had to do was accept the challenge for a match at Summer Sizzler.  Dusty wasted no time in saying yes as the segment ended with Sid simply laughing maniacally.

9)      Non-Title Match - World champion Ric Flair made Brutus Beefcake submit to the Figure-Four Leglock in 6:58. You have to hand it to Brutus Beefcake - he showed that he has a ton of guts and is a very loyal friend, but he showed that he wasn't completely recovered from his right quadriceps injury back in April.  Beefcake had the crowd thoroughly behind him, but his injured leg just didn't cooperate with him.  The Nature Boy meticulously took him apart before locking on the Figure-Four.  The Barber fought as best as he could, but the pain overtook him and he had to call it quits.  Flair refused to release the hold for several minutes, taking the work of several officials to get him to release.  Beefcake was being tended to by the medical staff as we went off the air. **
Snabbit888Posted on 12/09/08 at 05:54:06

8/24/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - ST. LOUIS, MO

1)      One Man Gang (w/ Jimmy Hart & Big Boss Man) pinned Sam Houston with the 747 Splash in 2:28. Wrestling action kicked off right away with the always impressive One Man Gang dismantling Sam Houston in quick and violent fashion.  Houston was wanting to impress officials and this wasn't the way to do it.  He also ate the Boss Man Slam from the Hart Family's security officer post-match.  Lex Luger, the British Bulldogs, & Greg Valentine are going to have their hands full this Sunday. * ½

2)      Bam Bam Bigelow was with "Mean" Gene Okerlund in the back to discuss his match with Randy Savage at Summer Sizzler.  Bigelow said there's been a lot of trying to outdo the other person, and this situation has become super personal.  The Beast From the East was going to end this vendetta before it even starts.  Bigelow couldn't get any further before RANDY SAVAGE jumped him and threw him into some lighting equipment.  Savage stomped away at Bigelow as Elizabeth screamed for him to stop.  Officials broke it up, but the damage had been done.

3)      The Colossal Connection (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated The Road Warriors by disqualification in 14:48. Well this match was... something.  I don't know what was up with Hawk & Animal, but they were loose cannons and out of control.  Referee Teddy Long looked lost as these four just tore into each other.  Even the fans could seem to tell that something was different.  The match went on way too long and Hawk & Animal didn't look to be going along with anything.  Eventually, Long would call for the bell and disqualify the Road Warriors when one member of the team refused to exit the ring.  Haku took a particularly harsh beating and appeared to hurt his throat.  Eventually Andre the Giant took control and sent the Road Warriors out of the ring. * ½

4)      Tito Santana defeated Arn Anderson with a flying clothesline in 12:14. In a preview match for this Sunday, Tito Santana of Strike Force took on Arn Anderson of the Brainbusters.  Santana and Anderson are two ring generals, and this match showed exactly why.  It was slow in the beginning, but after a feeling out process, the match picked up speed with counters and quick-paced action, ending when Tito caught the Enforcer by surprise with a flying clothesline and a flash 3 count. Anderson was startled and couldn't believe he was pinned, but Santana escaped the ring before the Enforcer could get to him. ** ½

5)      Ted DiBiase & Virgil did an interview.  The Million Dollar Man was still fuming over Kerry Von Erich's turning down of his offer.  DiBiase said that everyone had a price, and that no one makes him look foolish.  DiBiase said that the Texas Tornado wasn't above everyone else, and just like everyone else, he'd have a price for the Million Dollar Man.  Virgil said that as for Koko B. Ware, he would get his this Saturday at the Summer Sizzler Showdown.

6)      Big Boss Man (w/ Jimmy Hart) pinned The Italian Stallion with the Boss Man Slam in 2:24. Jimmy Hart's newest monster, his Head of Security Big Boss Man, showcased a little more of what he could do by decimating The Italian Stallion.  Stallion couldn't even get in a lick of offense as the Boss Man was all over him, driving him through the mat with the Boss Man Slam and taking the win. **

7)      Sid Vicious pinned Tom Zenk after the Power Bomb in 5:12. Sid Vicious got his wish a week ago when he finally goaded Dusty Rhodes into accepting a match with him at Summer Sizzler.  Sid was in a "good mood" as he called it and wanted to celebrate by crushing someone he hadn't crushed before.  This brought out someone we hadn't seen before, and he grabbed the microphone.  He introduced himself as TOM ZENK, and he said he had been watching in recent weeks and Sid had gone too far.  Zenk was here to put a stop to this.  Sid laughed him off, but he wasn't laughing when Zenk caught him in the mush with a dropkick, busting his lip open, and the match was on!  It has been awhile since anyone really took it to Sid, but that's just what Zenk did.  He was lacking greatly on strength and size, but he was by far the quicker of the two, and he kept Sid off-balance.  The crowd really believed Zenk was going to pull off the huge upset as he got a couple close nearfalls, but Sid slowed him down with a big boot and drilled him with the Power Bomb.  Zenk was game but just couldn't muster enough offense to stop the undefeated Sid.  Sid was mad that Zenk busted his lip open and was looking to give him the stretcher treatment but DUSTY RHODES ran out with a bullrope!  Sid saw him and bailed before Dusty could get to him, but he won't be able to run come this Sunday. * ½

8)      Before our main event, a video package highlighting HULK HOGAN was shown.  The video featured clips from his matches, his bodyslam of Andre the Giant, his being crowned the 1988 King of the Ring, and being named the top contender to the World Title.  Clips were also shown of the contract signing and the subsequent beatdown he received, finishing with a slow-motion replay of Sid's Power Bomb onto the heavy table, injuring Hogan's back.  A well done video package to promote our PPV main event

9)      Intercontinental Title Match - Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Greg Valentine with the Rude Awakening in 15:48 to retain the title. Our main event was a classic contest with Rick Rude defending his Intercontinental Title successfully against Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.  Valentine is such a general in that ring, and he showed that by completely controlling the pace of this match.  It's strange that Rude would even take this match this close to Summer Sizzler, and he obviously had his mind elsewhere - that elsewhere being The Ultimate Warrior.  Warrior did an insert promo during the match saying that the Heenan Family's demise starts this Sunday when the crown jewel is dethroned and he becomes the Intercontinental champion.  Rude had to be careful in this match to make sure he made it to this Sunday with the title in tow.  Valentine systematically wore the Ravishing One down, trying to set up that Figure-Four Leglock, but Rude fought out of it and surprised the Hammer with the Rude Awakening to narrowly escape with his championship. ****
Snabbit888Posted on 12/09/08 at 06:17:50

As of August 25, 1998, Hawk & Animal, collectively known as the Road Warriors, have left the UWF.  News has come out that problems had surfaced earlier this month when Hawk blew up at officials over the push that he and his partner had been receiving.  Hawk believes that the Road Warriors are top draws and should be at the top of the card.  They were also said to be upset over their program with Demolition, calling them "Road Warrior ripoffs."

The promoter of the UWF, Mark Niemiller, did not like being called out like that and to punish the Road Warriors, they were booked to lose to the Colossal Connection on this past week's High Voltage.  Hawk & Animal agreed backstage, but when they got out to the ring, they went into business for themselves which led to the mess that was that match.  The Road Warriors decided to shoot, which is borderline nuts with Andre the Giant in the ring.  The match ended up a legit fight, and during the altercation, Haku suffered a larnyx injury and is going to be out for a few weeks.

As a result of what happened, both Hawk & Animal were handed their walking papers and are no longer welcome in the UWF.  No word yet on what is to happen at Summer Sizzler where the Warriors were originally slated to meet Demolition.
Larry MondelloPosted on 12/12/08 at 18:20:18

Bah!  I hate hearing about another missed opportunity for a huge Warriors/Demolition feud.  Not too sure that this outcome isn't too far from what reality would have been though.  It's hard to see Hawk & Animal being willing to do the job for Ax & Smash.
Snabbit888Posted on 12/14/08 at 02:42:51

It kind of sucks, but I like that it gives me some real life backstage stuff for this that isn't out of the realm of reality.

Yay story depth!

8/27/88: SUMMER SIZZLER SHOWDOWN

1)      Koko B. Ware defeated Virgil with the Ghostbuster in 4:23. Our big night of action on the eve of Summer Sizzler kicked off with Koko B. Ware taking on the Million Dollar Man's servant, Virgil.  Virgil was looking to impress DiBiase by taking care of Koko, but it didn't turn out too well for him.  Koko outclassed Virgil and put him away with the Ghostbuster. *** ½

2)      In a pre-recorded interview, HULK HOGAN spoke from the medical facility he was at yesterday afternoon.  Hogan said he spoke with his doctors and has been given medical clearance to wrestle at Summer Sizzler, and thus he can meet Ric Flair for the World Title.  Hogan said Flair tried his best, but nothing was going to stop Hulkamania from running wild on him.  What a main event this should turn out to be.

3)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart) by disqualification to retain the titles.  They will be on opposite sides tomorrow night in the 8-man tag, but the Hart Foundation had a huge opportunity to take the World Tag Team Titles for the Hart Family.  This was a great wrestling match as the Bulldogs have been making a habit out of having those recently.  Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart can stay with Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid move-for-move, and that resulted in a fantastic match.  In the end, Bret Hart would try to use one of the tag titles to clock Dynamite Kid.  He did so, but unfortunately in plain view of the referee, causing the disqualification.  Davey Boy Smith ate a face full of title belt as well.  The Bulldogs may have retained the titles, but they didn't look like winners. *** ¾

4)      Backstage, Tom Zenk officially introduced himself to Dusty Rhodes.  Zenk thanked Rhodes for coming to his aid on Wednesday when Sid was looking to stretcher him.  Zenk told Dusty that he'd have his back at Summer Sizzler.  Dusty thanked him, but said that he didn't want him anywhere near the ring tomorrow night, citing that he had to do this alone.

5)      Terry Funk defeated Danny Davis by countout in 7:35. Danny Davis' suspension was officially lifted before this match, provided he followed through with it.  Davis made several controversial calls against Terry Funk and was suspended for it.  He fought hard to get Harley Race to reinstate him, which he eventually did - if he wrestled Funk in a match.  Davis was in the match, but he didn't get a chance to wrestle.  Funk beat the tar out of him, busting him open pretty early and never letting up.  Funk nailed Davis with the piledriver and easily could have put him down for the pin, but instead threw him to the floor where he hit another piledriver!  Davis was completely out and was counted out, awarding the victory to Terry Funk.  Davis wasn't moving though and had to be taken to the back on a stretcher. ½*

6)      One Man Gang won a 20-man battle royal, lastly eliminating Rick Rude.  Other participants included: Lex Luger, Kerry Von Erich, Big Boss Man, Tito Santana, Rick Martel, Greg Valentine, Bam Bam Bigelow, Haku, Andre the Giant, Ax, Smash, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Ted DiBiase, The Ultimate Warrior, Sid Vicious, Randy Savage, & Tom Zenk. The show closed with a fan favorite match - a 20-man battle royal.  There was a lot of beef in the ring, but something had to give.  One of those big men, Bam Bam Bigelow, would be the first to go as RANDY SAVAGE jumped him on his way to the ring before the match even started.  Bigelow was wiped out so when he finally got in the ring, he was eliminated right away by Haku.  Sid was very dominant in this match, making the next elimination by chucking newcomer Tom Zenk out of the match.  Greg Valentine's night also ended early as Intercontinental champion Rick Rude dumped him to the floor.

Rick Martel showed some great speed and escape ability when he avoiding being thrown out of the ring by Smash, and when he pulled himself back into the ring and surprised Smash with a dropkick, sending him to the locker rooms.  Martel didn't get long to bask in his accomplishment as Sid hit him with a back suplex and dumped him out of the ring.  Like it was mentioned earlier, there were a lot of big man in this match, but none bigger than Andre the Giant, who asserted his dominance by breaking up a fight that was going on between Tully Blanchard & Kerry Von Erich and sent them both out of the ring.  A couple of minutes later, Ted DiBiase put an end to Tito Santana's night and eliminated him from contention.

Lex Luger was hoping for a better night than he ended up having, but unfortunately for him, Big Boss Man & One Man Gang spent the entire battle royal double teaming him.  Luger did what he could to fight it off, but it was too much and he would be the next man eliminated.  Randy Savage may have been proud of himself for causing Bam Bam Bigelow to be the first man eliminated in this match, but it turned against him as Bigelow returned to the ring and chased after Savage!  Savage saw Bigelow coming and tried to run away, but he ran right into Haku who dumped him out of the ring.  Savage didn't have time to care though as he had to get as far from Bigelow as possible.  Haku would be the next to go right after as Sid threw him out.  Ax would attack Sid and try to take him out, but Sid turned the tables there and dumped him out of the ring as well.

With only 8 men remaining, the size of the competitors was a major factor.  Left in the ring still was Sid, Andre, Boss Man, One Man Gang, The Ultimate Warrior, Rude, DiBiase, & Arn Anderson.  As the smallest man left in the match, Anderson got targeted by Boss Man & One Man Gang who made short work of him and sent him packing.  At this point the rest of the wrestlers in the ring realized that if they had any chance of winning, they were going to have to get rid of Andre the Giant.  Andre wasn't going to go without a fight and he fought everyone off tooth and nail, but unfortunately for him the numbers were too great and Andre was finally eliminated.  With Andre gone, Sid thought of himself as the big dog in the yard, and he took everyone down to the mat with his bruising style.  He looked like he could have dumped everyone from the ring at his leisure if he wanted to, but DUSTY RHODES had different thoughts as he started to the ring with his bullrope in tow.  Sid was ready for the fight and was practically begging Rhodes to get in the ring, but in doing so, he took his eye off the prize and was dumped to the floor from behind by the Million Dollar Man!  Sid was in shock and turned that shock to anger as he went after the American Dream, but officials separated the two before anything could happen.

With Sid eliminated, Boss Man & One Man Gang looked to be the favorites as they were working together.  They chose The Ultimate Warrior as their next victim and were working them over.  Warrior was in a bad way as Boss Man held him open for OMG to hit him, but when OMG went for the clothesline, Warrior broke free and the Gang hit Boss Man, sending him flying over the top rope and out of the match!  Warrior clotheslined OMG down to the mat right after.  DiBiase tried to get the jump on the Warrior, but he would be sidestepped and sent flying out of the ring, leaving us with our final three - Warrior, OMG, & Rick Rude.

Warrior clearly had the momentum, and Rude wanted nothing more than for Warrior to be less than 100% for their Intercontinental Title match tomorrow night.  Rude brokered a deal with One Man Gang and the two went to work on the Warrior.  Warrior kept fighting back and staving off elimination.  Warrior looked like he was going to pull it off when he ducked a double clothesline and hit OMG & Rude with a double clothesline of his own.  Warrior may have made a slight mistake when he went after OMG and tried to eliminate him first instead of Rude.  Warrior almost had OMG out of the ring, but Rude hit him with a low blow from behind, allowing the Gang to toss him out of the ring.  "Ravishing" Rick was laughing his head off as he taunted Warrior from inside the ring, but that smile was wiped away quickly as OMG nailed him with a backward kick and dumped him out of the ring, taking the win as we closed out the show. ****

Feedbackery~!:
Koko and Virgil looked like a fun opening match. I mark out for the Birdman so I'm glad to see him win.

Hogan is cleared to wrestle. His funeral if he steps in there with the Nature Boy. Should be a battle for the ages between two great wrestlers

Awesome little tag team match, as the eight man is set up well for this match and the Bulldogs are taken out. I bet the Hart Foundation takes those belts before too long.

Dusty/Sid, won't be that many headscissors or dropkicks, but it will be entertaining. Looking forward to this one a lot!

Oh, that crazy old Funker. I bet Davis wished he hadn't messed with Funk. Piledriver on the floor, that means he's dead or at least crippled for a while, right? :)

Battle Royals rule. Fun little field Damn, the Warrior got shafted! Damn that Rude. Gang wins which is fine.

Awesome little show right there and Summer Sizzler should be...a sizzler.

8/28/88: SUMMER SIZZLER - CHICAGO, IL

1)      The Hart Family (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Lex Luger, Greg Valentine, & the World Tag Team champions The British Bulldogs when B. Hart pinned Dynamite Kid after the Hart Attack in 8:49. The big pay-per-view kicked off with the 8-man tag team match.  Though there was a lot of talent on the face contingency, but what they were lacking was the experience of teaming together.  Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid are of course the World Tag Team champions, but as a quartet, they didn't have the same cohesiveness as the Hart Family.  One Man Gang, Big Boss Man, & The Hart Foundation all eat, sleep, and travel together, and thus worked far better as a unit.  It would lead to their victory, Dynamite Kid being hit with the Hart Attack and pinned by Bret Hart. ** ½

2)      HULK HOGAN, the #1 contender, was back with "Mean" Gene Okerlund, and boy was he fired up.  The Hulkster reiterated that he was cleared to wrestle, and that his back wouldn't be an excuse tonight.  He said the only thing that was going to matter was taking the World Title from Ric Flair, and if he had to take out all of the Horsemen to do so, so be it.

3)      Kerry Von Erich pinned Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) with the Tornado Punch in 5:58. Ted DiBiase was still fuming that Kerry Von Erich wouldn't be bought out of his World Title shot, and cost the Texas Tornado his World Title opportunity by buying out the referee instead.  The Million Dollar Man now had to incur the Tornado's wrath, and Von Erich came out livid.  Von Erich was too aggressive in fact, and it almost cost him this match early on, but he would nail DiBiase with the Tornado Punch out of nowhere to get the win.  DiBiase was loopy and not happy after the match, taking out his frustrations on Virgil by slapping him around a bit. ** ¾

4)      Intercontinental Title Match - The Ultimate Warrior defeated Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) by disqualification in 10:20.  Rude retains the title. This was The Ultimate Warrior's big opportunity to take the Intercontinental Title and in his eyes, ruin the Heenan Family, and in the early portions of this match, he looked to be doing just that.  Rude had some strategies he wanted to try, but nothing worked and the Warrior continually overpowered him.  After a distraction from Heenan (which almost got him killed), Ravishing Rick got the advantage and did everything he could to put the Warrior down, but he couldn't do it.  Rude even hit the Rude Awakening, but was shocked after he gyrated for the crowd and turned around to see Warrior looking him dead in the face!  Warrior took control and even hit the Gorilla press slam, but before he could hit the Big Splash, ANDRE THE GIANT was in the ring and all over him, leading to the disqualification.  Andre & Rude left Warrior laid out before heading to the back.  Rude may not have got the winner's purse of the money, but he was still the Intercontinental champion. ** ½

5)      The Rockers defeated Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) when Jannetty pinned Smash after a superkick in 7:23. Before this match, Ax & Smash bragged about running the Road Warriors out of town, saying that Hawk & Animal were too scared so they chose to quit altogether.  They knew they'd still have a match tonight and wanted to know who was stupid enough to face them.  After a brief pause, some upbeat music started and out came SHAWN MICHAELS & MARTY JANNETTY, collectively known as The Rockers!  Michaels & Jannetty are a far different team than the Road Warriors, and this took Demolition completely off guard.  They were expecting a different style of team, and the speed and innovative high-flying of the Rockers took them by complete surprise.  The Rockers were one step ahead at all times and scored the victory because of it.  Demolition is already demanding a rematch against this upstart young duo. *** ½

6)      Sid Vicious defeated Dusty Rhodes by disqualification in 8:40. Sid finally got his hands on Dusty Rhodes, or maybe it was the other way around as this match was an all-out brawl.  Dusty was working on pure emotion, and truthfully, this is exactly what Sid wanted.  He wanted Rhodes to give it all he had so that when he still beat him, he could lord it over him forever.  Well Sid did beat him, but it wasn't how he expected to win.  Dusty eventually lost his cool in this match, grabbed his bullrope from ringside, and waffled Sid with the bell, busting him open and causing the disqualification.  Dusty could have cared less as he continually brought that cowbell crashing onto Sid's skull, busting him wide open.  It took a hoard of officials and TOM ZENK several minutes to finally convince Dusty to stop.  I have a feeling this one is far from over. *** ½

7)      Bam Bam Bigelow gave a passionate interview backstage on Randy Savage, his former friend.  Bigelow said that there was no turning back now, that's Savage's paranoia has caused this rift, a rift that can never be repaired.  Bigelow said it was personal, and he was very much looking forward to not just beating the Macho Man tonight, but taking him out.

8)      Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) pinned Bam Bam Bigelow after the Flying Elbowdrop in 14:59.  Despite how personal of an issue this feud has become, for the most part, both men were able to keep their cools and wrestle smart, not taking any unnecessary risks and not making any big mistakes.  The momentum swung back and forth as Savage cheated many times to try to win the match while Bigelow tried to punish the Macho Man with his brute strength.  Bigelow looked to have Savage down and out after a huge powerslam and he went up top for the Flying Headbutt.  ELIZABETH jumped on the apron though and begged Bigelow not to do it.  I don't think she was intentionally trying to distract Bigelow, but that's what she ended up doing.  Bigelow finally ignored her and jumped off with the Headbutt, but Savage moved out of the way and quickly capitalized with the Flying Elbowdrop to get the 1-2-3.  Elizabeth was obviously distraught over what happened, but even more so after Savage grabbed a chair from ringside and nailed Bigelow with it.  He then wrapped the chair around Bigelow's left arm and went up top, hitting another Flying Elbowdrop, this time directly on the chair!  Officials ran out and broke things up, but Bigelow was clearly in a ton of pain.  We would find out after the event that his arm was broken thanks to the Macho Man. *** 1/4

9)      The Brainbusters defeated Strike Force when Blanchard pinned Santana with a backslide and his feet on the ropes in 6:31. Another great tag team match featuring these two teams.  It's only a shame they couldn't be given more time as the match was really picking up when it ended.  The Brainbusters took the victory when Blanchard ducked under a clothesline from Santana and countered with a backslide.  With the aid of his feet on the ropes, Blanchard held Santana down for the 3 and stole a victory for the Horsemen. *** ¾

10)      Before our main event, "Mean" Gene Okerlund caught up with reigning World champion Ric Flair and asked him if he was at all nervous about Hulk Hogan in the main event.  Flair said that he wasn't surprised that Hogan was here and able to wrestle tonight.  He said they tried to take him out and they didn't, which wasn't all that unexpected.  He put over that Hogan was a tough guy, but that's he's also stupid.  Flair said Hogan may have been cleared to wrestle, but there's no way that he was at 100%.  "And Gene, the Nature Boy ALWAYS has a plan!  WOOOO!"

11)      World Title Match - Ric Flair pinned Hulk Hogan in the Figure-Four Leglock in 30:29 to retain the title. Flair said that he had a plan, and he sure did.  This was a match that many people had been wanting to see for a number of years, and it didn't disappoint.  This was a great main event and the ruckus Chicago crowd was solidly behind the Hulkster, wanting to see a brand new World champion at all costs.  As this match waged on, it looked like that was exactly what we were going to see.  Flair targeted Hogan's back for much of this match like the smart champion he is, but there was nothing he could seem to pull out that would Hogan down and out.  In classic Hogan fashion, he beat back every Flair attack and Hulked up, making it appear that he had this one well in hand.  Hogan went as far as hitting the Big Boot and the Big Leg Drop, but as he made the cover, ARN ANDERSON & TULLY BLANCHARD were up on the ring apron.  Referee Teddy Long was distracted, trying to send them to the back.  While Long had his back turned, RANDY SAVAGE was back for the second time tonight and absolutely destroyed Hogan with a chair, knocking him out cold.  Flair locked on the Figure-Four Leglock.  The Brainbusters jumped off the apron and when Long turned and saw Hogan in the Figure-Four and out of it, he counted Hogan's shoulders to the mat, allowing Flair to retain the title.  The show went off the air with the Horsemen celebrating Flair's title retention. *** 1/4

Since the cards are starting to become a little time consuming to write, I think I'm going to severely trim down the writing for non-essential cards.  I mean, this circuit is in August of 1988, so I don't think if I cut through some of this filler stuff to move forward in history faster it's going to make that big of a deal.  Plus, it's my circuit and you all can suck it!

I think other than the pay-per-views or any other big supercards (I'll be doing a Clash of the Champions in October of '88, for example), I will be doing an abridged writeup.  Just enough to get the point across and any storyline stuff that happened after.

We'll see how long I can stick with this since my normal instinct is to write more.

NOOOOO HOGAN :(
