4/6/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - HARTFORD, CT

1)      The Brainbusters defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion when Blanchard pinned the Stallion with the Spike Piledriver in 3:06. Tag team action kicked off the night as the Brainbusters soundly defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion.  Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard keep the Horsemen strong. ** ½

2)      Immediately following the match, World champion Ric Flair & Sid Vicious joined the Brainbusters in the ring.  Flair said that the Horsemen are proving each and every day that they are the dominant force in all of wrestling.  He said that the people may not like them, but there isn't anyone man enough to do a thing about it.  He said he would prove that next week when he beat Koko B. Ware and remained the World champion.

3)      Brutus Beefcake & Brooklyn Brawler wrestled to a no contest when Beefcake suffered an injury in 1:40. Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake looked well on his way to picking up a victory over Brooklyn Brawler, but he was cut short when he suffered an injury.  Beefcake went to hit a big forearm smash, but when he planted his leg buckled and he fell to the man in obvious pain. The match was called immediately by the referee.  We would learn later that Beefcake suffered a tear of his right quadriceps muscle and that he will require surgery.  The injury isn't as bad as it could have been, but he should still miss up to 5 months. DUD

4)      King of the Ring Qualifying Match - Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) defeated Terry Funk by disqualification in 5:04. This was the first qualifying match for the King of the Ring tournament.  The King of the Ring will take place on June 12th live from Miami, Florida on pay-per-view, and will feature a one night, 8-man tournament where the winner will be declared King of the Ring.  This was also a rematch from Wrestlecade's Texas Death match that DiBiase won under controversial circumstances.  The same referee, Danny Davis, was assigned this match, and Davis assured Funk that he'd call it right down the middle.  The match was going fine and was back and forth until Funk locked DiBiase in the Spinning Toe Hold.  He seemed poised to pick up this win by submission when Virgil jumped up on the apron.  Funk released the hold, grabbed Virgil, and pulled him into the ring.  Funk fired Virgil up with several punches as Davis warned him to stop.  Funk didn't, and Davis called for the bell and disqualified the Funker!  The crowd booed loudly as once again, Danny Davis made a dubious call that cost Terry Funk a match.  Funk threatened to go after Davis, but Davis got out of the ring in a hurry.  Regardless of how it went down, Ted DiBiase is the first man to qualify for the King of the Ring tournament. ** ½

5)      Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage are seen bickering backstage as Elizabeth looks on with a distraught look on her face.  As the argument became more heated, HULK HOGAN came in and broke it up.  Hogan told Bigelow & Savage that whatever issues they had, they needed to put it behind them and in a hurry.  He was just in a meeting with Harley Race and in two weeks on High Voltage, it will be a six man tag team match pitting the three of them against Andre the Giant, Haku, & Intercontinental champion Rick Rude.  Hogan concluded by saying that if they don't get along and in a hurry, they'll have to answer to him.

6)      Intercontinental champion Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Rick Martel with a Hotshot in 8:55 in a non-title match. Non-title action as IC champ Rick Rude took on newcomer Rick Martel.  Rude felt Martel wasn't worthy of a title shot, but a victory in this non-title match would have put Martel right in contention.  Martel gave rude quite a challenge, getting several nearfalls.  There was even a moment of confusion at one point when Martel covered Rude and seemingly got a 3 count, but referee Earl Hebner noticed that Rude's foot was on the ropes.  The match was restarted and moments later, Ravishing Rick caught Martel by surprise with a Hotshot and took the win. ** ¾

7)      Sid Vicious defeated Barry Horowitz with the Power Bomb in 1:57. The newest member of the Horsemen continued his reign of terror as he demolished Barry Horowitz in just under two minutes with the Power Bomb.  DUSTY RHODES, who Vicious cost the World Title at Wrestlecade, tried to get to Sid after the match, but officials came down and kept them separated. ** ½

8)      We had a backstage interview segment with Lex Luger, who introduced himself to the UWF.  Luger declared himself the Total Package, and said no one in wrestling today had as much upside as he did.  He said that he will take on all comers and will soon prove to everyone why he is the future of the business.

9)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart) when Dynamite pinned Neidhart with a sunset flip in 28:53 to retain the titles. This was the match we were supposed to see at Wrestlecade, but Jim Neidhart was injured and One Man Gang took his place.  Jimmy Hart managed to get them one more shot now that Neidhart was good to go.  These are two of the most technically sound teams in the world and they showed that for nearly a half an hour here.  During the match we could see DEMOLITION watching from the back, as they have already issued a challenge for the World Tag Team champions no matter who they are.  After a tremendous main event, it would be the Bulldogs who retained their championships as Dynamite Kid reversed a power bomb attempt from Neidhart into a sunset flip and got a flash pin.  After the match, Jimmy Hart's newest acquisition ONE MAN GANG came into the ring and laid out both Dynamite and Davey Boy Smith.  The show went off the air with the Hart Family standing tall, despite not having the gold. ****

Maybe Koko B. Ware will finally get that good he deserves  ;D
Snabbit888Posted on 09/23/08 at 09:44:14

I am a huge Koko B. Ware mark.  I can't help but give him a push. :)
piperfan18Posted on 09/24/08 at 20:44:52

as am I maybe not world title material but he did deserve the IC title IMO

4/13/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - UNIONDALE, NY

1)      The Road Warriors defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion when Animal pinned Stallion after a power bomb in 3:18. The domination of Hawk & Animal continued as they plowed through Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion.  It can only be a matter of time before they are in contention for the World Tag Team Titles. ** ¾

2)      King of the Ring Qualifying Match - The Ultimate Warrior defeated Virgil (w/ Ted DiBiase) with the Big Splash in 2:02. Ted DiBiase qualified for the King of the Ring last week and was looking to help his servant Virgil do the same thing.  Problem is, the man he had to try to qualify against The Ultimate Warrior, who no one has figured out yet.  There was nothing the Million Dollar Man could do to slow the Warrior down who ran through Virgil in no time and became the second man to qualify for the King of the Ring. DUD

3)      When we returned from commercial, TERRY FUNK was backstage with "Mean" Gene Okerlund.  Funk said he had a huge issue with the officiating of Danny Davis.  Funk accused Davis of having a personal vendetta against him and screwing him out of two victories.  Funk said that Davis better watch his back.  At this point, Intercontinental champion RICK RUDE interrupted, faking wiping away tears.  Rude said Terry Funk is a legend in this sport, but he has become nothing more than a crybaby, blaming a referee of all people for his troubles.  Rude said it was pathetic and that if he's just going to cry, he needs to simply move out of the way and let superstars such as himself lead the pack.  Funk took exception to this and punched Rude in the mouth and the brawl was on!  Funk had the advantage until HAKU & ANDRE THE GIANT came, chasing the Funker off.

4)      Dusty Rhodes defeated Barry Horowitz with the Bionic Elbowdrop in 6:25. Dusty Rhodes is still fuming about not winning the World Title at Wrestlecade, and especially wants to get his hands on Sid Vicious.  He seemed a little distracted in this match against Barry Horowitz as a result.  Horowitz got a lot of offense in on Dusty, but the American Dream persevered and took the win with the Bionic Elbowdrop. ****

5)      The Brainbusters defeated Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) when Blanchard pinned Savage after the Spike Piledriver in 12:51. Hulk Hogan was doing commentary during this match as next week, he will team with Bigelow & Savage to take on the Heenan Family.  Bigelow & Savage seemed to be on the same page early, and they had to be as there isn't a team in the UWF that runs as smoothly as Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard.  As the match wore on, the cart derailed and Bigelow & Savage and all semblance of cohesion went out the window, leading to the Macho Man eating the pin after the Spike Piledriver.  When Savage recovered, he was livid and blaming Bigelow for the loss, and a shoving match ensued.  Elizabeth tried to intervene, but in doing so was accidentally shoved to the ground.  Before anything else could happen, Hulk Hogan got in the ring and separated the two, eventually getting the two to shake hands.  They will have to do something drastic in order to beat the Heenan Family next week. *** ½

6)      One Man Gang (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Brooklyn Brawler with the 747 Splash in 1:04. Jimmy Hart has found himself a monster.  One Man Gang made very short work of the poor Brooklyn Brawler, dismantling him in just over a minute.  Between OMG, the Hart Foundation, and Greg Valentine, Jimmy Hart has built himself a stable of talent that'll be hard to get past. ¾*

7)      Jimmy Hart took the microphone after the match and said that it has only been a few months but everyone is already underestimating the Hart Family.  He said he is stocking up a tremendous roster of talent and that the four men he has under contract is just the beginning.  Soon everyone will be talking about the Hart Family.

8)      World Title Match - Ric Flair defeated Koko B. Ware with a Thesz press in 22:00 to retain the title. Koko B. Ware earned this title shot by defeating Greg Valentine two weeks ago, and he certainly made the most of it.  Ric Flair is the dirtiest player in the game, but he had all kinds of trouble with Koko.  Koko knew this was the chance of a lifetime and he needed to strike while he could.  Koko got several nearfalls throughout this match that kept the crowd expecting that we would see a new champion.  In the end though, Flair's affinity for cheating paid off as he countered with a Thesz press close to the ropes.  As the referee counted, the Nature Boy hooked the ropes for extra leverage and just like that, retained his championship. *** ½

9)      After the match, DUSTY RHODES was out and he had a microphone.  Dusty said he was out to issue a challenge.  He had talked to Harley Race and said he worked it out for June 12th's pay-per-view, King of the Ring.  Flair interrupted and said there's no way Dusty is getting a rematch for the World Title.  Dusty said he knows that, because Flair is a coward.  Dusty said the match would be an 8-man tag team match.  Dusty will find 3 partners to take on the Four Horsemen.  Flair said that's fine because no one is stupid enough to join the American Dream's team to take on the elite in professional wrestling.  Dusty said he already found one partner, RICK MARTEL.  Dusty said the other two men will be revealed in coming weeks.

4/20/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - NEW HAVEN, CT

1)      The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated SD Jones & Scott Casey when Neidhart beat Casey by countout in 3:01. Jimmy Hart said that the Hart Family would soon make an impact, and it started off successfully with Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart wrestling in tag action, solidly defeating SD Jones & Scott Casey.  They were so dominant that Casey was counted out when Neidhart dumped him to the floor.  The Hart Foundation want another shot at the tag titles, and this was a good start. ¾*

2)      We cut to an interview with Mr. Fuji and his team, Demolition.  They said they have put the challenge out but the British Bulldogs have yet to answer them.  They said they want to have an answer by next week whether they get the title shot, or they will beat the answer out of Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid.

3)      Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) defeated The Italian Stallion with a Russian legsweep in 4:07. Ted DiBiase is already in the King of the Ring, but the Million Dollar Man kept the momentum going with a pinfall victory over The Italian Stallion, getting a standing ovation in the process... from Virgil. ***

4)      Sid Vicious defeated Reno Riggins with the Power Bomb in 1:43. Reno Riggins had a chance to impress UWF officials, but boy did he draw the short straw by having to wrestle Sid Vicious.  Riggins didn't get in a single offensive move as Sid planted him with the Power Bomb for the win.  After the match, Sid grabbed the microphone and said that Dusty Rhodes has bitten off way more than he can chew and he will pay for it. ** ½

5)      "Mean" Gene Okerlund found Bobby Heenan backstage and asked him about the 6-man tag team main event.  Heenan said he was completely confident that his men would be victorious over Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, & Bam Bam Bigelow and prove the Heenan Family was the premiere group in the UWF.  Heenan then got quite a scare when he was cornered by THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR, who simply told him his days were numbered before leaving the Brain shaking in his boots.

6)      King of the Ring Qualifier - Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Lex Luger by countout in 8:43. Make it two for two for the Hart Family tonight, and this one with Greg "The Hammer" Valentine defeating the previously undefeated Lex Luger.  Luger is a young, powerful individual, having mowed through competition to date.  But one thing Luger hasn't had to deal with yet is when the odds are stacked against him, and that's what he got here.  Luger was dominating this match with his strength and power arsenal, but Valentine used a great veteran move and low-bridged the Total Package, sending him to the floor.  While Valentine kept the referee distracted, ONE MAN GANG came down to ringside, obliterated Luger with a clothesline.  He then picked him up and rammed him back first into the ring post, causing him to be counted out.  The Hart Family is really working together now and now, Greg Valentine joins Ted DiBiase & The Ultimate Warrior in the King of the Ring. ** 1/4

7)      World champion Ric Flair was asked by "Mean" Gene Okerlund if he had any comments on Dusty Rhodes' challenge to an 8-man tag team match at King of the Ring.  Flair said that he already proved at Wrestlecade that he is superior to the American Dream in everywhere, not only as a wrestler but in intellect as well.  The Nature Boy said it would take a lot more than Rick Martel to make him worry.  He officially accepted the challenge on behalf of the Horsemen and didn't care who the other two partners were.

8)      Dusty Rhodes & Rick Martel defeated Barry Horowitz & Brooklyn Brawler when Martel made Brawler submit to a sleeperhold in 2:58. Ric Flair didn't seem to have much concern about Dusty Rhodes & Rick Martel before, but after this match, he might be singing a different tune.  The American Dream & Martel looked fantastic as a team, making short work of Barry Horowitz & Brooklyn Brawler.  After the match, the Brainbusters started stalking the ring, but Rhodes & Martel were joined by KOKO B. WARE to keep Anderson & Blanchard at bay. ** ½

9)      Andre the Giant, Intercontinental champion Rick Rude, & Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) when Andre pinned Bigelow with the Elbowdrop in 10:51. This was perhaps the biggest main event in the short history of the UWF, and it did not disappoint.  The atmosphere was electric and the tension could be cut with a knife.  The action went back and forth until Bigelow got stuck in the ring with Andre the Giant.  The face team strategy was to keep Andre out of the ring, but once they got him in the ring, they couldn't get him back out.  Andre would go on to hit the big Elbowdrop on Bigelow and get the win for the Heenan Family.  Hogan helped Bigelow after the match, but the Macho Man would have none of it as he took Elizabeth and left in a huff to end the show. ***
SolomattGrundyPosted on 10/02/08 at 22:59:52

I meant to get to this sooner, but since I've been a lazy bastard lately with my own stuff...it took me a while to get around to reading this.

Random Thoughts on 4/6/88:
Pez Whatley is my third favorite JCP/NWA/WCW jobber behind the Gambler and Nasty Ned Brady, so I mark out for his involvement. Plus, the Brain Busters all are kinds of rule and hell...anything involving any combination of the Horseman is pure win. Even with Sid, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the big lug.

Brutus Beefcake gets injured. I don't normally laugh at the misfortunes of others but since it's Beefcake...well you know.

That damn scoundral Danny Davis. Don't mess with the Funker.

Drama backstage between the faces. Should be interesting to see where this goes.

Hebner screwed Bret er Martel :). Looked like a good match and since Martel's new, it should be interesting to see where he works himself into things.

Sid squash. Awesome.

Lex Luger. Moving right along.

Hot damn, you can't go wrong with the Hart Foundation and the BUlldogs. Demolition are waiting in the wings and another guilty pleasure favorite of mine, the One Man Gang shows up to beat down the Bulldogs.

Great show, moving onto the next.

4/13/88:
Road Warriors squash. If there is one thing that I like better than a Sid squash, it's a squash by the Roadies.

WARRIOR WINS! Marks the hell out. Warrior should win the entire tournament, just because he's the Warrior.

Funk confronts Davis and gets into it with Rude. Rude/Funk, that sounds like fun.

Dusty...another mark out. And Sid/Dusty should be...different.

Brainbusters win after a babyface miscue. Savage and Bigelow get into it, Elizabeth gets knocked down, and here comes the Hulkster to try to make peace. They shake hands, but are they really on the same page?

Yay, Gang wins. And Jimmy Hart's got more coming. I'm looking forward to seeing whatever the Mouth of the South has up his sleeve.

Wooo! *struts, throws off coat, elbowdrops it, gets up, falls flat on face* Awesome battle between the Nature Boy and the Birdman.

Eight man tag with Rhodes and friends against the Horsemen, it should be epic. Martel was a solid first pick for the Dream.

4/20/88:
The Hart Foundation beat some jobbers. This dominant performance should bode nicely for their title aspirations.

The hype for Demolition and Bulldogs continues to heat up.

DiBiase win, good job, keeps him fresh in the fan's minds for the Tournament.

Sid squash! Yay the sequel.

The Ultimate Warrior confronts the Brain. That's epic. I hope we see a Weasel Suit Match :)

Ha, Luger jobs, to the Hammer! One Man Gang and Lex Luger, I'm getting flashbacks(or would it flash forwards), of all those Luger versus big fat heel matches they had on Nitro from 1996-1997. Even though Gang rules, Luger is Luger.

Naitch, can't go wrong with a Ric Flair interview.

Dusty Rhodes and Rick Martel show that at least half of their team can work together.

Biggest main event, no kidding, and that's not just because Andre and Bam Bam are in the ring. Things work out well, until Andre gets in and then you can kiss things good bye. And it looks like the faces are falling apart again

Amazing trifecta of cards. I am looking forward to the next one.

4/27/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - BALTIMORE, MD

1)      The show kicked off with a noticeably sore Lex Luger being approached by the World champion Ric Flair.  This was a business meeting as Flair was wanting to recruit Luger for the Horsemen.  Luger tried to be polite and respectful, but Flair was pushing the issue.  Flair tried to convince the Total Package by telling him that what happened with One Man Gang a week ago would have never happened if he had the Horsemen watching his back.  The Nature Boy told Luger to think about it before walking off.

2)      Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, & Sid Vicious defeated Louie Spicolli, SD Jones, & Scott Casey when Sid made Casey submit to a bearhug in 2:25. The Horsemen showed how they're a well-oiled machine in 6-man tag action, easily taking care of Louie Spiccoli, SD Jones, & Scott Casey.  After a technical display from Anderson & Blanchard, Sid's raw power caused Casey to submit in a hurry when trapped in a bearhug. * ¾

3)      Terry Funk defeated Reno Riggins with the Spinning Toe Hold in 2:31. Terry Funk has a ton on his plate right now.  Not only does he have an impending issue with UWF official Danny Davis over some controversial calls in his recent matches, but he got into a brawl with Intercontinental champion Rick Rude two weeks ago here on High Voltage.  Despite these distractions, Funk came focused tonight and made short work of Reno Riggins.  During the match, IC champion Rude was shown in the back watching the match on a monitor, witnessing Funk lock on the Spinning Toe Hold and get the submission victory. ** ¾

4)      Non-Title Match - World Tag Team champions The British Bulldogs defeated The Conquistadors when Smith made #2 submit to an airplane spin in 2:44. The plight of Conquistador #2 continues as he was the recipient of another defeat for his team.  It's not surprising for the Conquistadors to have troubles with the reigning World Tag Team champions.  Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid are so in synch that it's tough for any team to keep up with them.  In a bit of an embarrassing result, #2 gave up when Smith had him in an airplane spin. ***

5)      After the contest, "Mean" Gene Okerlund asked the British Bulldogs about the challenge laid down my Mr. Fuji and Demolition for a match for the tag team titles.  The Bulldogs want to be known as fighting champions, and said they would take on "any team, any time, any place."  The Bulldogs said they would wrestle Demolition at King of the Ring, and the World Tag Team Titles will be up for grabs!

6)      King of the Ring Qualifying Match - Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) defeated Bret Hart (w/ Jimmy Hart & Jim Neidhart) with the Flying Elbowdrop in 13:39.  Randy Savage & Bret Hart were looking to join Ted DiBiase, The Ultimate Warrior, & Greg Valentine in the King of the Ring tournament.  On paper, the Macho Man had to have the advantage as he is primarily a singles wrestler, but Bret Hart had the Anvil and the Mouth of the South at ringside with him.  It wouldn't take long for them to get involved either as the Anvil attacked Savage on the floor.  Instead of a disqualification being called for, the referee sent Neidhart to the back!  This made it an even affair, and with Elizabeth watching the Macho Man's back and letting the referee know when Jimmy Hart was trying to interfere.  Bret is a great technician and worked over Savage in this match, but he would fall to the Flying Elbowdrop, making the Macho Man the 4th competitor in the King of the Ring. *** ½

7)      Dusty Rhodes & Rick Martel were backstage for an interview, and they officially announced that Koko B. Ware was the third member of their team for the King of the Ring against the Horsemen.  It's hard to argue with that pick.  Now one has to wonder who Dusty will select as the fourth man.

8)      One Man Gang (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion with the 747 Splash on Stallion in 1:43. Not even two men can slow down Jimmy Hart's latest find.  Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion fought valiantly, but OMG is over 400 pounds and not a pleasant individual.  The 747 Splash on both men put this one away.  OMG has looked unstoppable, but one man who wants his shot to stop him is Lex Luger. * ½

9)      The sound of wind is heard and then a tornado quickly crosses the screen, leaving in it's path the words, "THE TEXAS TORNADO IS COMING TO THE UWF."

10)      The Ultimate Warrior & Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) wrestled to a double countout in 12:01. Bobby Heenan jumped on commentary for our main event and said he was tired of The Ultimate Warrior trying to bully him, which is why he sent Haku out here tonight to take care of him.  Haku did just that for much of this match, giving the Warrior a beating we haven't seen him take yet.  Warrior showed he can take a beating though and keep firing back, using his simple but effective power moves to punish Haku.  The two would spill to the outside and the fight would continue, leading to a double countout.  ANDRE THE GIANT came down to aid Haku, and the Warrior was the recipient of a two-on-one attack.  They threw him back in the ring and Andre was choking Warrior out when HULK HOGAN ran down to make the save, clotheslining Haku out of the ring.  Hogan then spun Andre around and hit him with two hard right hands.  Andre countered with a kick to the leg and went for a clothesline of his own, but Hogan ducked and bodyslammed Andre!  The crowd went nuts as Andre rolled out of the ring, being bodyslammed for maybe the first time in his career!  The show went off the air with Hogan & Warrior begging the Heenan Family to come back in the ring. -3/4*
