3/2/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - BIRMINGHAM, AL

1)      The show kicked off with the Horsemen out for an interview.  World champion Ric Flair said he was impressed with Dusty Rhodes' performances against Tully Blanchard & Arn Anderson the past two weeks, but he has decided that Rhodes will NOT get a World Title shot.  This brought out the American Dream who was not happy.  Rhodes said that Flair was a coward and not worthy of calling himself the World champion.  Flair retorted by saying it didn't matter what Rhodes thought, because as champion, the Nature Boy called the shots.  HARLEY RACE disagreed, coming out and telling Flair he WILL defend the World Title at Wrestlecade against Dusty Rhodes, and if he didn't, he'd be stripped of the gold!

2)      Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) defeated The Conquistadors when Bigelow pinned #2 with a splash in 2:47. The Brainbusters refused the challenge of Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage, saying that they're not a regular team and not in their league.  They took on the Conquistadors to show they could work together as a team, and they looked great.  They controlled the match from bell-to-bell and a splash from Bigelow put this one away. *** ½

3)      Koko B. Ware defeated Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) with a splash in 3:46. Intercontinental champion Rick Rude was down doing guest commentary for this one as the number-one-contender to his title Koko B. Ware took on Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.  Rude ran down Koko throughout the match, calling him a "midget" and saying that last week was a fluke.  Despite Rude trying to distract him from ringside, the Birdman hit a splash on the Hammer to get the win.  Rude teased jumping in the ring, but Koko was ready for him and thought better of it. ***

4)      Hulk Hogan defeated Brooklyn Brawler with the Big Leg Drop in 3:00. An easy night for the Hulkster as he Big Leg Dropped his way to the winner's circle.  During the match, Andre the Giant and Bobby Heenan did an insert promo saying that Hulkamania would be ended for good at Wrestlecade. * ½

5)      "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase and his servant Virgil were out for an interview.  This was the first we've heard from DiBiase since Harley Race signed him for a Texas Death match against Terry Funk.  DiBiase said that the match was totally unfair as it completely favored Funk and his maniacal style.  DiBiase feels that he is being punished for giving Funk a concussion, but nothing was said when Funk "maliciously tried to end" DiBiase's career during the Intercontinental Title tournament.  DiBiase said that he is going to make sure that Terry Funk never wrestles again.  At this point there was a ruckus in the crowd and TERRY FUNK attacked DiBiase!  Funk was all over DiBiase until Virgil attacked Funk.  Funk fought back and got a hold of one of DiBiase's crutches, nailing Virgil in the back with it and knocking him to the floor before taking a wild swing at the Million Dollar Man who barely escaped.

6)      Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Brutus Beefcake after hitting him with brass knuckles in 4:30. Not a good night for Brutus Beefcake.  Beefcake will be wrestling Greg Valentine at Wrestlecade, and the Hammer got the upperhand tonight when he slipped a pair of brass knuckles to Haku who blasted the Barber with them to get the tainted victory. -** 1/4

7)      Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) defeated Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion by countout in 1:32. This was a massacre.  I'm not entirely sure what Mr. Fuji did to motivate his men, but Ax & Smash turned it up to a whole other level tonight.  Poor Pez Whatley & The Italian Stallion didn't even have a chance to breathe before Demolition was kicking their teeth in.  It didn't take long before Whatley was counted out after he and his partner were brutalized.  Ax & Smash want a shot at the World Tag Team champions and it looks like they're willing to do whatever they have to do get their shot.

8)      Speaking of the World Tag Team Titles, the current number-one-contenders, The Hart Foundation, did an interview with their manager Jimmy Hart.  Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart said that they are the best tag team in the world and after Wrestlecade, everyone will be able to see it and they will be the new champions.

9)      The British Bulldogs defeated The Brainbusters when Smith pinned Blanchard with a small package in 17:56 in a non-title match. We had a great tag team contest as our main event as the World Tag Team champions the British Bulldogs took on Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard in a non-title match.  Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid are set to defend their titles against the Hart Foundation at Wrestlecade, but this match still had big implications.  If the Brainbusters won, not only would it move them into contention for a future title shot, but it could significantly alter the confidence of the champs.  This was a technical wrestling fan's dream as we saw great mat work from both teams.  So many nearfalls and reversals of fortune from both teams, but in the end, the Bulldogs would prove to be just a bit craftier as Davey Boy reversed a suplex attempt into a small package for the 3 count and the win. ** 1/4

3/9/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - ATLANTA, GA

1)      The Hart Foundation (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated The Young Stallions when Bret Hart pinned Jim Powers after an elbowdrop from the second turnbuckle in 3:24. The Hart Foundation continues to impress as they prepare for their shot at the World Tag Team titles as they again wrestled the Young Stallions.  These two teams are very familiar with each other having met several times in UWF already, but Powers & Roma can't seem to figure Hart & Neidhart out, falling once again this week. **

2)      In a backstage segment, President Harley Race announced that The Brainbusters will take on Randy Savage & Bam Bam Bigelow at Wrestlecade.

3)      Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) defeated Barry Horowitz & S.D. Jones when Bigelow pinned Jones with a moonsault in 48 seconds. Welcome to the UWF, S.D. Jones.  Jones made his debut teaming with Barry Horowitz, and lasted a full 48 second before he was absolutely decimated by Randy Savage and Bam Bam Bigelow.  It took less than a minute before Savage bodyslammed Jones to the canvas and Bigelow hit the biggest moonsault I have ever seen for the three count. *

4)      Terry Funk defeated Brooklyn Brawler by countout in 2:38.  Terry Funk made his return to the ring after suffering a concussion by taking on Brooklyn Brawler.  Funk was revved up and the poor Brawler couldn't get any distance between himself and the Funker.  Funk beat the ever living crap out of the Brawler and won by countout.  I wouldn't want to be Ted DiBiase come Wrestlecade. ¾*

5)      Pez Whatley defeated Virgil (w/ Ted DiBiase) by countout in 3:53. This match was supposed to be Ted DiBiase's return to the ring after his knee injury, but at the last second he backed out and made his servant Virgil wrestle Pez Whatley instead.  Virgil was excited wanting to impress his boss and looked good against Whatley, but Virgil being in the ring left the Million Dollar Man vulnerable as TERRY FUNK ran back out and attacked him!  Virgil didn't realize what was going on but when he did he jumped out to help his boss.  In the process though, Virgil was counted out and Whatley picked up the win!  Funk was pummeling on both DiBiase and Virgil until officials came and broke it up. * ¾

6)      The Horsemen came out for an interview, but it was apparent that they had other intentions.  Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard commented on now officially having to wrestle Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage at Wrestlecade, saying that Harley Race overstepped his bounds because Bigelow & the Macho Man aren't even in their league.  They will prove it by easily dismantling them on March 27th.  The attention then turned to World champion Ric Flair and his title defense against Dusty Rhodes at Wrestlecade.  After running Rhodes down, Flair noticed that Dusty's son DUSTIN RHODES sitting at ringside.  Flair went out to the floor to talk to Dustin, running down the young Rhodes' father right in front of him.  Flair wouldn't let up and eventually called Dustin "a bastard" and that it was going to be great to kick Dusty's butt at Wrestlecade.  Eventually Dustin had enough and slapped Flair right across the face!  The crowd popped, but it wasn't smart as Anderson & Blanchard pulled Dustin over the railing and roughed him up.  The Horsemen took turns punching and kicking away at Dusty's son, eventually busting him open.  The crowd was wondering why Dusty Rhodes wasn't out to save his son, until a camera was sent to the back and we saw the American Dream unconscious on the concrete floor, apparently having been attacked.  Officials finally came out to aid Dustin Rhodes, but the damage had been done and both father and son had to be taken to the hospital.  I understand Ric Flair's desire to keep the World Title, but this just went too far.

7)      Koko B. Ware & Brutus Beefcake defeated Intercontinental champion Rick Rude & Greg Valentine (w/ Bobby Heenan & Jimmy Hart) when Koko pinned Valentine with the Ghostbuster in 13:42. This tag match was a preview of two Wrestlecade matches.  Koko B. Ware seems to have Rick Rude's number, and that continued in this match.  Rude's an egomaniac and his pride is being severely damaged every time Koko gets the better of him.  Valentine and Beefcake were also wanting to get the upperhand on each other as in their previous two matches they have been unable to do so.  This wouldn't be a good night for the Hammer though, as he was hit by a hard right hand from the Barber on the apron and walked right into the Ghostbuster from Koko to put this one in the books. ** ¾

8)      The Midnight Express (w/ Jim Cornette) defeated The Road Warriors when Lane pinned Hawk with the Savate Kick in 18:02. This match has been weeks in the making, with both teams costing the other several matches.  President Harley Race set up this match in hopes to settle this score once and for all, but that unfortunately would not be the case.  This was an intense matchup between two teams with very different styles.  The Road Warriors controlled the pace with their smashmouth intense style and "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton & "Sweet" Stan Lane had to adjust their style just to survive.  This was as aggressive as we have seen the Midnight Express, but it definitely isn't their match.  After a long grueling battle, Animal hoisted Lane up on his shoulders while Hawk climbed to the top for the Doomsday Device, but Cornette jumped on the apron and nailed Hawk in the back with his tennis racket while Eaton had the referee distracted.  Eaton then clipped Animal's knee which gave Lane the window to hit the Savate Kick on Hawk for the tainted win. *** 1/4

9)      The show concluded with the contract signing to officially set the match between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant at Wrestlecade.  The atmosphere was electric as two of the biggest stars in all of wrestling were fixing to lock horns, and you could cut the tension with a night.  As we have heard for several weeks, Bobby Heenan again claimed that Andre would end Hulkamania before it could ruin UWF like it has ruined many other federations.  Hogan said that Heenan was all talked and with the power of the Hulkamaniacs, he would slay the giant and move on to the World championship.  This upset Andre who then shoved the table into the Hulkster's ribs.  HAKU ran out and joined Andre in beating Hogan down.  It looked dire for the Hulkster until THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR ran down and cleared the ring of the heels!  After suffering an injury, the Warrior is back and formed an alliance with Hulk Hogan!

3/16/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - ROANOKE, VA

1)      Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Pez Whatley by disqualification in 3:38. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine dominated poor Pez Whatley and refused to make the cover, choosing to rough him up instead.  Eventually, Brutus Beefcake had enough and attacked Valentine, chasing he and Jimmy Hart to the back, but unfortunately, giving the Hammer the disqualification victory. * ¾

2)      After the match last week between the Road Warriors & Midnight Express solved nothing, Harley Race has signed a rematch between the two teams for Wrestlecade.  But to keep Jim Cornette from getting involved, it has been made UWF's first steel cage match!

3)      Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) defeated The Young Stallions when Bigelow pinned Powers with the Flying Headbutt in 4:04. Bigelow & Savage were looking to prove they could wrestle as a team against tougher competition, and they got that in the form of the Young Stallions.  A rare face vs. face match, it was great to see some good sportsmanship for once.  Roma & Powers pushed the Beast From the East & the Macho Man, but it wasn't enough to get the victory as Bigelow hitting the Flying Headbutt on Jim Powers put this one away. *** ½

4)      Koko B. Ware defeated Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) by disqualification in 8:50. With Koko B. Ware consistently getting the better of Intercontinental champion Rick Rude leading into their clash at Wrestlecade, Bobby Heenan was looking to get his man the advantage in any way he could think of, which is why he sent Haku out after him tonight.  Koko will never back down from a challenge, but Haku definitely roughed him up in this one.  Koko had the win within his grasp late when he went up top for a flying crossbody press, but RICK RUDE nailed him in the back with the Intercontinental Title for the disqualification.  Rude and Haku put the boots to Koko before Rude finished him off with the Rude Awakening.  Could this be a sign of things to come at Wrestlecade? * ¾

5)      In the back, Hulk Hogan thanked The Ultimate Warrior for helping him against the Heenan Family a week ago, and said if the Warrior needed anything, all he had to do is ask.  Warrior, in an oddly worded rant, told Hogan he didn't come out last week to help the Hulkster, but rather because Bobby Heenan is a parasite and that his kind needed to be taken out of the UWF.

6)      Sid Vicious defeated S.D. Jones with the Power Bomb in 1:21. Sid's dominance continues as he easily dispatches of S.D. Jones in just over a minute with the Power Bomb.  To make matters worse, Vicious hit another Power Bomb.  Jones needed medical attention and he was put on a stretcher for precautionary reasons.  Sid showed no remorse though as he then went to the floor and pushed the stretcher with Jones on it right into the ringpost!  This Sid is a scary man, and I'm not sure who could even stop him. 1/4*

7)      The Brainbusters defeated The Conquistadors when Anderson pinned #2 with the Gourdbuster in 2:58. The Brainbusters wanted to outdo Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage and thus wrestled the same team they did last week, the Conquistadors.  Anderson  Blanchard looked impressive and had little to no trouble thwarting Uno and Dos. **

8)      "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes gave a very passionate interview with "Mean" Gene Okerlund, talking about how the Horsemen brutalized and bloodied up his 18-year old son, Dustin.  Dusty got very emotional, telling Ric Flair that this wasn't a personal issue before, saying before all he wanted was to be the World champion.  But now, it has become personal and Rhodes doesn't just want to take the World Title, but he wants to hurt the Nature Boy and hurt him badly.  He also said he didn't know who it was that attacked him cowardly from behind in the locker room while the attack on his son was going on, but when he finds out, that man is going to pay.

9)      Jim Neidhart (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Davey Boy Smith with the Flying Shoulderblock in 11:09. Our main event was a preview of the World Tag Team Title match at Wrestlecade as Davey Boy Smith of the champion British Bulldogs took on Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart of the challenging Hart Foundation.  A good power match between two of the strongest men in the UWF.  Both men jockeyed for the upperhand but it would be Neidhart that would pick up the win with the Flying Shoulderblock.  We learned after the match that the Anvil tweaked his knee, but will be able to go at Wrestlecade. *** 1/4

3/19/88: UWF SUPERSHOW - PHILADELPHIA, PA

1)      Koko B. Ware defeated Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) with the Ghostbuster in 10:49. This match kicked off our big supershow in Philadelphia and it was a great match.  Just as he did on the March 9th edition of High Voltage, DiBiase tried to put in his servant Virgil as a replacement, but President Harley Race intervened and said that if the Million Dollar Man didn't participate, he would be suspended!  DiBiase was not thrilled but wrestled the match, and it was fantastic.  In the end, DiBiase's not being prepared cost him as Koko B. Ware continued his hot streak going into his Intercontinental Title match against Rick Rude at Wrestlecade. **** 1/4

2)      Rick Martel defeated Barry Horowitz with the Boston Crab in 7:21. We had our first of two debuts tonight as Rick Martel took on and defeated Barry Horowitz, making him submit to the Boston Crab.  Martel celebrated his victory, but it would be shortlived as SID VICIOUS came out and destroyed Martel with a big boot.  Vicious then grabbed Horowitz and hit him with the Power Bomb.  Martel got back to his feet and hit Sid with a couple of right hands, but Sid cut him off and planted him with the Power Bomb as well.  We're still not sure exactly what Sid's motives are, but I for one am not going to be the one who asks him. **** 1/4

3)      The Road Warriors and Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) wrestled to a double countout in 6:43. The rabid fans in Philly were very much looking forward to this epic tag team match between two of the most rugged teams in wrestling today, but unfortunately wouldn't get a decisive finish.  Both teams kicked the ever-living crap out of each other and they ended up on the outside of the ring.  The referee lost complete control and threw this one out for a double countout. * ¾

4)      Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Terry Funk with a gutwrench suplex in 7:04. Terry Funk is steaming after this match with Haku, and rightfully so after how he was screwed in this one.  Funk and Haku were having a good brawl that looked like it could have went either way until TED DIBIASE got involved.  DiBiase's servant Virgil jumped on the apron to distract the referee.  Funk nailed Virgil with a hard left hand to knock him to the floor, but Haku hit him with a gutwrench suplex.  Haku made the cover and the Million Dollar Man reached up and held Funk's foot down to prevent him from kicking out and giving Haku the win. * ½

5)      Intercontinental Title Match - Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Brutus Beefcake with a Hotshot in 10:04 to retain the title. Rick Rude had to be careful not to overlook Brutus Beefcake tonight because if he did, he wouldn't even make it to Wrestlecade to defend against Koko B. Ware.  Beefcake had the crowd firmly behind him and translated that into several nearfalls, but the Ravishing One proved to be a bit too crafty when he reversed a charge by the Barber and hit a Hotshot onto the top rope to retain the gold. *

6)      Lex Luger defeated Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) with a powerslam in 11:19. Our second debut of the evening featured "The Total Package" Lex Luger taking on Jimmy Hart's Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.  Luger is the epitome of a prospect, and is certainly one of the more physically gifted wrestlers in the UWF.  Valentine is a crafty veteran though and didn't make this at all easy for Luger, but the natural skills of Luger prevailed when he hit a big powerslam on Valentine for the 3. ** 1/4

7)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated The Midnight Express (w/ Jim Cornette) when Lane passed out in a Dynamite Kid sleeperhold in 23:08 to retain the titles. Jim Cornette managed to get Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane one more opportunity to win the World Tag Team Titles as the Midnight Express took on the British Bulldogs.  Once again, this was a great match between two of the best teams in the world.  The Midnight Express went balls to the wall to try to take the straps, but they fell just short again when Lane got trapped in a sleeper from Dynamite Kid and couldn't escape.  The Bulldogs look strong going into their match with the Hart Foundation. *** ½

8)      Hulk Hogan, Dusty Rhodes, Randy Savage, & Bam Bam Bigelow defeated World champion Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, & Andre the Giant (w/ Bobby Heenan) when Savage pinned Anderson with a small package in 17:43. Eight of the biggest superstars in wrestling were involved in our main event.  With the nature of the rules, the match was a bit cluttered with so many stars involved, but the crowd was definitely into it.  The only two men who didn't really have an exchange were Hogan & Andre as Andre kept his distance to mess with the Hulkster's head.  The finish saw the Macho Man roll Arn Anderson up in a small package for the win, sending the crowd home happy. **

3/23/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - ROCHESTER, NY

1)      Lex Luger defeated Brooklyn Brawler with a powerslam in 6:00. Lex Luger was making his television debut after being successful this past Saturday in Philadelphia in his UWF debut.  The Total Package took on the surly Brooklyn Brawler, who punched and kicked away at Luger as best he could, but wasn't able to overcome Luger's strength, who got the win with a powerslam. ** ¾

2)      Demolition (/w Mr. Fuji) defeated The Young Stallions after the Demolition Decapitation on Roma in 6:28. The struggles of the Young Stallions continued as took on Mr. Fuji's team of Ax & Smash, Demolition.  Jim Powers & Paul Roma used their speed as best they could to keep Demolition off-guard, but Ax & Smash are just far too daunting a task for most teams.  Demolition hit their patented Demolition Decapitation on Paul Roma for the dominating victory. * ¾

3)      Before our next match, we had an interview in the back with the Hart Foundation.  Jim Neidhart was on crutches after the knee injury he suffered in his match with Davey Boy Smith last week.  Jimmy Hart accused Davey Boy of deliberately injuring the Anvil so as to guarantee that the British Bulldogs will retain their titles at Wrestlecade.  Jimmy Hart concluded by saying that if Neidhart isn't able to go, there will be a replacement all lined up and ready to go to make sure the British Bulldogs' title reign is a short one.

4)      World Tag Team champion Dynamite Kid & Bret Hart (w/ Jimmy Hart) wrestled to a 20-minute time limit draw. Despite the Hart Foundation's ridiculous claim that Davey Boy Smith deliberately injured Jim Neidhart last week, Bret Hart came into a match with Dynamite Kid.  Davey Boy and the Anvil were ordered to stay in the back to ensure there would be no interference.  What ensued was a fantastic technical wrestling match between two of the best in the world.  Though it's very early in their careers, both of these men have the potential to be singles champions one day.  These two were so evenly matched that we wouldn't get a clear winner as this went to a time limit draw. ****

5)      Right after this match concluded, the camera cut back to the locker room where BOBBY HEENAN was taunting Hulk Hogan!  Heenan was right in Hogan's face telling him that his career was going to come to an end this Sunday at Wrestlecade when he takes on Andre the Giant.  The Brain was trying to incite the Hulkster, but it wasn't until he slapped him that Hogan snapped!  Hogan went chasing after Heenan, but it was a trap as ANDRE THE GIANT, HAKU, & RICK RUDE jumped Hogan and beat him down!  Hogan suffered quite a beating before he was saved by THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR & KOKO B. WARE!  As a result of this attack, we will see The  Ultimate Warrior take on Haku in our main event!

6)      Sid Vicious defeated Rick Martel with the Power Bomb in 4:31. Rick Martel made his debut in Philadelphia last weekend, and after being victorious, was unceremoniously attacked by Sid Vicious in an unprovoked assault.  To Martel's credit, he showed no fear in demanding that he get to wrestle Sid tonight.  Unfortunately for him though, Sid put a beating on him once more.  Martel got some flash offense in early, but once again ate the Power Bomb and suffered his first loss.  After the match, Vicious gave Martel a second Power Bomb for good measure.  Martel required assistance to get to the back. ** ¾

7)      Brutus Beefcake made Ted DiBiase (w/ Virgil) submit to the Barber's Chair in 9:03. Ted DiBiase thought he had this match in the bag against Brutus Beefcake.  Beefcake used a lot of power offense early on and bumped the Million Dollar Man around the ring, but DiBiase's used his technical skills and affinity for cheating to get the advantage.  The match was all but over when he locked on the Million Dollar Dream, but TERRY FUNK ran out and assaulted Virgil at ringside!  Poor Virgil didn't even see it coming as Funk threw him all around the ringside area, busting him open by throwing him into the ringpost.  DiBiase released the hold to yell at Funk, but didn't dare go to the floor with the Funker.  During this, Beefcake recovered and the Barber locked on the barber's Chair sleeperhold.  DiBiase flailed to escape, but couldn't and had to submit. ***

8)      World champion Ric Flair was out by himself for an interview.  Flair looked sincere in saying that what the Horsemen did to Dusty Rhodes' son Dustin a couple of weeks ago had crossed the line.  He wanted Dusty Rhodes to come out so that he could apologize to him face-to-face.  Dusty Rhodes did come out, but the American Dream didn't seem to be interested in an apology, but rather he wanted Flair's blood.  Officials were down to keep the two separated as Flair tried to apologize but Rhodes would have none of it.  Eventually, Flair would have Rhodes distracted long enough for ARN ANDERSON & TULLY BLANCHARD to jump Rhodes from behind.  The Horsemen levied a 3-on-1 attack on Rhodes before officials finally separated them, but the damage had been done.  There is no way Rhodes can be 100% going into his World Title match.

9)      The Ultimate Warrior defeated Haku (w/ Bobby Heenan) with the Big Splash in 4:56. We haven't seen much of The Ultimate Warrior due to the knee injury he suffered, but he is definitely recovered as shown by his performance here against Haku.  Warrior goes full throttle right from the opening bell and is hard to slow down, and Haku had no such luck doing so as he would fall in under 5 minutes to a Gorilla Press slam and the Big Splash.  Warrior may not be looking to become friends with Hogan, but the Hulkster has to be happy to have him in his corner. -1/4*

3/27/88: WRESTLECADE - NEW YORK, NY

1)      The show kicked off with the sold out Madison Square Garden being treated to the National Anthem being sung by Peter Farrell of the group, Jane's Addiction.

2)      Steel Cage Match - The Road Warriors defeated The Midnight Express (w/ Jim Cornette) when Hawk pinned Lane after the Doomsday Device in 13:13. The show kicked off with a bloody brawl pitting The Road Warriors against The Midnight Express, locked inside the confines of a steel cage.  This was the first cage match in UWF history, and it did not disappoint.  This match was pinfalls only, so there was nowhere for Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane to run, and nothing Jim Cornette could do but cheer his charges on from the floor.  The Express did well for themselves and even looked like they could pull out a win.  But Eaton missing the Alabama Jam late would do them in, and Lane would eat the Doomsday Device to put the first match in Wrestlecade history away. ***

3)      Intercontinental Title Match - Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Koko B. Ware with the Rude Awakening in 5:55 to retain the title. Koko B. Ware finally got the opportunity he was looking for as he got his chance to wrestle Rick Rude for the Intercontinental Title.  Highlights were shown of Koko's non-title win over Rude on February 24th.  Koko came out fast as he had the speed advantage over Ravishing Rick.  Koko wanted to end it early when Rude fell to the outside.  Koko got on the apron and attempting a flying crossbody onto Rude, but Rude's manager Bobby Heenan pulled Rude out of the way.  Unfortunately for Koko, he went face first into the guardrail.  After that, he couldn't really recover and Rude put him away with the Rude Awakening. *** ½

4)      "Mean" Gene Okerlund was backstage with World champion Ric Flair, who talked about his match with Dusty Rhodes for the World championship tonight.  Flair said that for him, this is all a business.  He doesn't have anything against Dusty Rhodes personally, but said that the World Title is the most important thing in the world to him, and when you're champion, you get all the money, the cars, the fame, the women, and he's not about to let that go any time soon.  He said he is in the American Dream's head and that is why he will leave New York City the World champion.

5)      Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Brutus Beefcake after a bodyslam in 5:11. Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine have had two previous matches where nothing was settled, so this third and final contest was signed.  Though the finish wasn't clean, this should solve this issue for now as the Hammer would get the pin on the Barber after hitting a bodyslam and putting his feet on the ropes for extra leverage. -**

6)      The Brainbusters defeated Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) when Blanchard pinned Savage after a gutwrench suplex in 9:15. The Brainbusters were very much against wrestling Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage under any circumstances, but the ability of the Beast From the East & the Macho Man to co-exist as a team gave President Harley Race no choice but to grant them the match.  Despite Bigelow's & Savage's chemistry as a tag team, Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard have been teaming for years and know each other backward and forward.  The Brainbusters used their vast tag team knowledge to control this match.  The end would feature some controversy.  Savage was in the ring with Blanchard and Blanchard was in control.  Elizabeth jumped up on the apron as she was concerned about Savage.  Savage countered Blanchard by shoving him into the ropes, but he accidentally shoved him right into Elizabeth, who went crashing to the floor.  Bigelow, being a gentleman, jumped off the apron to the floor to check on Elizabeth, who appeared to have hurt her ankle.  Unfortunately, this was right as Savage was going to the corner for the tag.  Savage couldn't make the tag, and thus was drilled with a gutwrench suplex from Blanchard and that was all she wrote.  After the match, the Macho Man freaked out by jumping on the floor and shoving Bigelow for not being in the corner when he needed the tag.  As Savage yelled at Bigelow, he didn't even seem to care that Elizabeth was injured.  Savage would leave both Bigelow & Elizabeth at ringside to a chorus of boos.  Bigelow would do the right thing and help Elizabeth to the back. ** 1/4

7)      Texas Death Match - Ted DiBiase defeated Terry Funk after a lariat in 24:25. Terry Funk had been waiting weeks to get his hands on Ted DiBiase, and he had his chance in his kind of a match, a Texas Death match.  This match was as brutal as we thought it would be.  Virgil was nowhere to be seen after Funk beat him up on High Voltage last week, so DiBiase was all on his own... or so we thought.  The match went back and forth with both men getting decisions, but couldn't keep the other down for the requisite ten count.  Referee Danny Davis began to make some questionable calls such as counting particularly slowly when DiBiase was down.  Funk began getting frustrated and called Davis out on it, but Davis said he was doing nothing wrong and for Funk to keep wrestling.  After Davis seemingly deliberately slow counted DiBiase's shoulders on the mat, Funk got in his face and grabbed him by the shirt.  This let DiBiase grab a chair and smack Funk in the back with it.  For good measure, the Million Dollar Man hit a brutal lariat to get a three count.  Davis then quickly counted his way to ten and awarded the match to DiBiase, much to the chagrin of the fans in New York. **** 1/4

8)      Before our next match, Ax & Smash, along with their manager Mr. Fuji, were back with "Mean" Gene Okerlund.  They said they didn't care who came away with the World Tag Team Titles tonight, but they were challenging the winners for the titles.

9)      World Tag Team Title Match - The British Bulldogs defeated Bret Hart & One Man Gang (w/ Jim Neidhart & Jimmy Hart) when Dynamite Kid pinned Bret with the Flying Headbutt in 16:20 to retain the titles. Jimmy Hart promised that he would have a suitable replacement if Jim Neidhart was unable to compete tonight.  The Anvil came out on crutches and said he couldn't wrestle, so Jimmy Hart introduced the replacement... ONE MAN GANG.  One Man Gang is 6'7" and 450 pounds, almost as big as the combined weight of the British Bulldogs.  This wasn't exactly what the Bulldogs had prepared for and they had an uphill battle.  When One Man Gang was in the ring, he was completely dominating, throwing the smaller Davey Boy Smith & Dynamite Kid around the ring.  The Bulldogs strategy was to keep Bret Hart in the ring, and that's what they did to perfection.  Once they got Hart in the ring, they didn't allow him to make another tag.  In the end, One Man Gang ran in the ring to try to save Hart, but he missed an avalanche and accidentally crushed Bret in the corner.  A double dropkick sent OMG to the floor, allowing Dynamite to hit the Flying Headbutt on Hart to successfully retain the titles. *** ½

10)      Before perhaps the biggest match of his career, HULK HOGAN gave an interview.  Hogan said he would be lying if he said he wasn't a little nervous.  Not nervous because he was scared, but nervous because this is the time that Hulkamania would come to the forefront of the UWF.  He said after he picked Andre the Giant over his head and bodyslammed him to the mat, it would propel Hulkamania to the World Title.

11)      Hulk Hogan defeated Andre the Giant (w/ Bobby Heenan) by disqualification in 5:27. The atmosphere was electric as the two biggest stars in wrestling locked horns.  The early part of the match belonged to Andre.  Hogan tried a couple of times early to bodyslam the Eighth Wonder of the World, but Andre fought him off every time.  It looked dire for Hogan when Andre locked him in a bearhug, but Hogan fought hard with hard right hands.  Hogan hit the ropes and hit Andre with a huge clothesline.  Another one followed rocking the big man, and a third one knocked Andre to a knee.  From there, Hogan channeled the sold out Madison Square Garden to lift Andre up and bodyslam him to the mat!  The crowd went absolutely nuts as Hogan went for the Big Leg Drop, but before he could do it, RICK RUDE & HAKU were in the ring double teaming Hogan for the immediate disqualification.  The three-on-one attack was put to a stop when THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR ran in and cleared the ring.  Hogan & Warrior stood tall in the ring as Heenan took his Family to the back, vowing to get even with the Hulkster and the Warrior. -** ¾

12)      Before our main event, we heard from "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes.  It was surprising that Rhodes had few words to say, but he dedicated the match to his son Dustin and said he will leave New York the new World champion.

13)      World Title Match - Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes when Flair pinned Rhodes in the Figure-Four Leglock in 29:45 to retain the title. The match we were all waiting for was our main event, and what a fight it was.  The fact that Dusty Rhodes was able to keep his cool given the situation was pretty impressive.  There was a ton of emotion involved for him, which resulted in the Nature Boy suffering quite a beating.  But on the flip side, it also led to Rhodes making a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes which allowed Flair to work him over, targeting his knees.  Dusty showed a ton of heart in that he continually fought back.  Late in this great match, referee Earl Hebner got bumped by an errant elbow from Rhodes.  Rhodes hit the Bionic Elbow and covered the Nature Boy, but there was no referee to count.  It was at this point that we learned the identity of the man who knocked Dusty Rhodes unconscious in the locker room a few weeks back which allowed the attack on Dustin in the first place.  While the referee was still down, SID VICIOUS came to the ring, booted Dusty in the stomach, and dropped him with the Power Bomb!  Vicious helped to revive Earl Hebner as Flair locked on the Figure-Four.  Hebner saw Dusty in the hold and his shoulders on the mat and counted his shoulders to the mat, allowing Flair to retain the title.  The show came to a close with the Horsemen - Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, and Sid Vicious standing tall. *** ¾

3/30/88: HIGH VOLTAGE - BOSTON, MA

1)      The Four Horsemen started off this show with an interview.  The first thing World champion Ric Flair did was welcome the newest member of the Horsemen, Sid Vicious.  Sid said that costing Dusty Rhodes the title felt almost as good as it did to knock his "fat butt" unconscious a few weeks ago on High Voltage.  Flair said with the addition of Vicious, there is no one that can slow down the Horsemen.

2)      Rick Martel defeated Brooklyn Brawler after a dropkick in 3:10. Rick Martel was a little worse for wear after the beating he took from Sid Vicious last week, but he made it to this match to defeat the Brooklyn Brawler.  The Brawler took advantage of Martel's injured state, but caught a big dropkick right to the mouth that put him down for the 3. ** ¾

3)      Lex Luger defeated Barry Horowitz with the Torture Rack in 4:20. Lex Luger continued his impressive streak since debuting by defeating Barry Horowitz.  Luger locked Horowitz in the Torture Rack and forced him to submit.  The young Luger continues to impress. ***

4)      Danny Davis was the referee of the last contest, and before he could head to the back, he was confronted by TERRY FUNK, who was ready to knock his teeth out right then and there.  Davis told him it was all a misunderstanding and that he would prove he wasn't a biased official next week as he had been assigned Funk's King of the Ring qualifying match against Ted DiBiase.

5)      One Man Gang (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated Pez Whatley with the 747 Splash in 1:36. One Man Gang wrestled his first singles match tonight and dominated Pez Whatley in a squash.  OMG's signing is a coup by Jimmy Hart, and makes the Hart Family a powerful force to reckon with in the UWF. * ¾

6)      Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) defeated Bam Bam Bigelow & Randy Savage (w/ Elizabeth) when Smash pinned Bigelow with the Backbreaker in 8:39. As this match started, an insert promo was done where Bigelow & Savage said they patched up their differences and that what happened at Wrestlecade was merely a misunderstanding.  For the first part of this match, that looked to be true as they worked great together to counter a difficult team in Demolition.  But as the match wore on, Bigelow got stuck in the ring as the Macho Man was conveniently out of position several times.  Eventually Smash caught Bigelow with a huge Backbreaker and got the 3 count.  After the match, Bigelow & Savage had some heated words and all we heard from Savage was him repeatedly saying, "Now we're even!"  They need to get on the same page soon. *** ½

7)      The Road Warriors defeated The Conquistadors when Hawk pinned #2 with a flying shoulderblock in 53 seconds. SQUASH.  The Road Warriors destroy the hapless Conquistadors.  Next. ¾*

8)      We got a strange but effective interview from The Ultimate Warrior, who came to Hulk Hogan's aid at Wrestlecade when he was being beat down by Haku & Andre the Giant.  Warrior said that he was headhunting Bobby Heenan because he is a scourge on the wrestling world and will not rest until Heenan and the Heenan Family are destroyed.

9)      Number-One-Contenders Match - Koko B. Ware defeated Greg Valentine (w/ Jimmy Hart) with the Ghostbuster in 13:07. The winner of our main event between Koko B. Ware & Greg Valentine would move on to face Ric Flair for the World Title in two weeks time.  Koko came within an eyelash of winning the Intercontinental Title at Wrestlecade, and will now have a chance to wrestle for the World Title.  Jimmy Hart did everything he could to help his man out, but nothing was going to stop the Birdman from hitting the Ghostbuster and earning his title shot. *** 1/4
