WCW

blslivewirePosted on 04/02/08 at 19:22:57

This is my attempt to save WCW from all the things that brought it down: wrestlers with too much control, incompetent management, poor booking and a severe lack of proper marketing.

Along with being your typical TNM Circuit, I want to also share my ideas on the buisiness side of things as well.

The story is that I am a high level Time Warner executive that brings the fact that WCW is not living up to its full potential(i.e. making money) to the top brass.

I am then made President of World Championship Wrestling while Eric Biscoff is my Vice President. I have final say in all matters.

My first order of buisiness is to make WCW's marketing division a partnership with Warner Bothers' marketing department. Instead of letting marketing geeks who are succesful in other areas screw up wreslting, I'll have them make proposals and pitch ideas for T-Shirts and other merchandise to give WWF a run for their money. At this time, WCW is more popular than WWF but WWF does far more in merchandising. No excuse for that.

I also use the Time Warner pull to make WCW Home Video much more relevant. I make sure WCW Videos are in every major retail and rental chain.

As for the wrestling product itself, I will use Eric Biscoff's direction as a template but I make the final call.

As important as ratings are, the priority will be selling Pay Per Views.

Nitro will remain 2 hours. The announce team will be Tony Schiavone & Bobby Heenan.

Thunder's announce team will be Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay & Larry Zybsko.

WCW Saturday Night will have Mike Tenay & Dusty Rhodes.

Nitro will always be live and Thunder will be taped on Tuesdays. WCW Saturday Night will be taped before Nitro and Thunder.

House shows will become more prevelant. Tours will run from Friday to Tuesday with 2 different groups alternating weeks. Everyone who is on TV will work every Monday & Tuesday but one week once group works the Firday-Sun house shows and the next week the other group works them.

Mandatory 30 days suspensions for no shows(including house shows).

I'll start the at the time WCW started going downhill, Starcade 1997.

Background

It's December 1997 and WCW is on top of the ratings war having beaten WWF for well over a year straight. To make things better, WWF Champion Bret Hart leaves the company for WCW. After all the buzz about the Montreal Screwjob, the arrival of Bret in WCW is huge.

Due to the ill will of the Montreal Screwjob, Davey Boy Smith, Jim Neidhart and Owen Hart also want out of the WWF. Neidhart is not under contract so WCW signs him to a 2 year deal immediately. Smith is able to buy out his contract and does so before signing a 3 year deal with WCW. At first, Vince McMahon refuses to allow Owen Hart out of his contract but finally gives in after Owen threatens retirement. Owen then buys out his WWF contract before signing a lucrative 3 year deal with WCW.

On the December 8, 1997 Nitro NWO leader Eric Biscoff welcomes The Hart Family to WCW. Bret Hart cuts a promo saying he's sick and tired of corupt management and challenges any 4 NWO members to take them on at Starcade.

Match observations:

The most anticipated match in years finally happend. Sting went over clean to win the WCW World Title after not wrestling for 15 months.

The Hart Family amde their WCW debut with a big win over the NWO.

It gets worse for the NWO, Kevin Nash lost in the battle of the 7 Footers to The Giant. Rumour has it that Nash tried to pull a no show but apparantly the new WCW President takes shit from no one and threatened to sue Nash for breach of contract.

WCW announced that next year's Starcade, their biggest show of the year, will be at the Georgia Dome so they must be confident they can sell 50,000+ tickets.

Before I post the first TV show let me address the promos. While scripted promos in the WWE and TNA help some wreslters, they tend to make everyone sound the same. So instead I'll be using bullet points to get the point across and let your immagination due the rest. Also, I'm lazy.

WCW World Tag Team Title Match
The Steiner Brothers (c) vs The Outsiders

The Outsiders dominated the early postion of the match due to their size advantage over the Steiners. But the experienced tag team champions eventually took control of the match and dominated much of the match.

Buff Bagwell then came out to ringside and caught the attention of Rick Steiner who was on the ring apron while Scott Steiner  battled Scott Hall in the ring. Hall whipped Scott into the ropes while Rick had his back turned causing Scott to knock Rick off the apron and into the gaurdrail.

While Buff Bagwell remained at ringside by joinging the announce team, The Outsiders dominated the rest of the match until The Giant came out a few minutes later. The Giant's presence caused Bagwell to split and Nash to forget about the match and stare the Giant down. Hall then decided to check on his partner and the Steiners regained their composure in just enough time for Rick to nail Hall with the Top Rope Bulldog while Scott fought Nash off and prevented him from breaking the pin.

Interesting take on WCW. Will continue ro read will wll comment once I catch up on everything
Biscuits n GravyPosted on 06/08/08 at 06:39:18

Pretty interesting so far. I never watched WCW, so I have to admit I really don't know who a lot of these guys are, especially the low-carders.

I really like the nWo angle.

This is the second time in the past month I've realized that I'm an old wrestling fan. My cousin's 7 year old claims to be a huge wrestling fan but he's just kind of heard of Steve Austin and has no idea who The Rock is.
Darth_KrawliePosted on 06/08/08 at 08:54:10

Well, he's 7.  The Rock has been virtually non-existent his entire conscious life.
blslivewirePosted on 06/08/08 at 10:05:48

Well the jist is that WCW was kicking WWF's ass from 1996 through 1997. They had a much deeper and more talented roster, a seemingly endless supply of cash from Ted Turner and a history making angle in the New World Order. Eric Bishoff was in charge and was becoming the next Vince McMhaon.

The NWO started in the summer of 1996 when WWF's Diesel and Razor Ramone (Kevin Nash and Scott Hall) unexpectedly showed up on WCW tv. Their arrival was played off as if they were still WWF employees invading WCW. When Hulk Hogan turned heel and joined them, buisiness took off and the new wrestling boom was started.

More former WWF employees such as Syxx(X-Pac) Ted DiBiase, Vincent and Mike Rotundo joined the NWO. The WWF even filed a lawsuit over it saying that WCW was implying these men were still under WWF contracts.

In late 1997 Bret Hart left the WWF for WCW and that should have been the death blow to the WWF. But WCW's momentum came to an ubrupt end at Starcade 1997(WCW's WrestleMania).

The Sting-Hogan match had been building for literally 15 months. Yes 15 months. Sting went from being a charasmatic talker to a silent, Crow rip off. He managed to get more and more over by not saying a single word for over a year.

Hogan was the WCW champion and was the super heel. WCW had been teasing everyone with Sting finally kicking his ass for over a year and the PPV drew a huge buy rate. Instead of telling the perfect story, Bischoff let Hogan start telling him what to do.

Hogan pinned Sting clean in the match. Don't ask me why. But then special outside enforcer Bret Hart-yes instead of having Bret wrestle on his first WCW PPV and the biggest show of the year, they had him ref-made them restart the match because he said there was a fast count. There wasn't.

Sting eventually won the match but he might as well have lost. Hogan pinning him clean erased 15 months of build up in 3 seconds. Sting was the champ but he was still the guy who got pinned clean.

So now WCW had a face champion that everyone had no confidence in. To make Starcade worse, Kevin Nash got out of jobbing to The Giant by faking a heart attack. Not a storyline. He actually said he missed his flight because he thought he was having a heart attack. Yes it's the same Kevin Nash who, 11 years later, looks rather healthy in TNA.

From that point on it was downhill for WCW. Bischoff basically did whatever Hogan told him to do, Nash basically said he was never going to lose on TV or PPV again unless he felt like it, Sting went from being one of the biggest stars in wrestling to another mid-carder, the huge new arrival of Bret Hart was ruined when he too became a mid-carder who changed from face to heel on a monthly basis and maybe most importantly, they didn't create any new stars other than Bill Goldberg.

There was an elite group of 5 or 6 guys that were allowed to be main eventers. Other than Bill Goldberg, they were all in their late 30s or 40s and had been around so long and wreslted each other so many times that they became stale. Guys like Chis Jericho, Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were constantly looked over so that the veterans spots were protected.

Other problems included expanding Nitro to 3 hours with the first hour being all promos and no wrestling, Hogan and Nash vetoing storylines and using Bischoff as their booking pupet and the previously mentioned veterans basically never showing up for house shows.

Oh and they made Ric Flair out to be a total idiot and tried to bury him as much as possible.

Maybe it was just luck but as WCW was crumbling from withing, the WWF was taking off at the same time. In early 1998, RAW finally ended Nitro's ratings streak when Mike Tyson did an angle with Steve Austin. RAW and Nitro would go back and forth for most of 1998 before RAW just took off and Nitro just kept getting worse. But WWF was also turning out tons of new stars like Austin, Rock, Mick Foley, Triple H, Kane, etc. Eventually, they were joined by guys who left more money on the table in WCW to work in the WWF such as Jericho, Guerrero, Benoit, Dean Malenko, The Giant aka The Big Show, Saturn and Raven.

Eric Bischoff turned out o be a one trick pony who had nothing else to offer than the NWO. Other than that, he had no buisiness running a wrestling company. To this day he portrays himself as a successful buisiness man but he's not. Even when WCW was hotter than WWF, they never sold as many t-shirts, videos or toys as the WWF. He just din'nt get the most out of his product like Vince has always been able to.

To show just how stupid Bischoff is, he went on a tv show and actually bragged that if Steve Austin was in WCW, he never would have made it past mid card status. He thought he was putting his product over but instead he just revealed to everyone that he would have burried one the biggest wrestling draws ever.

That was just the begining really, because, with the execption of Bill Goldberg's push and bringing in Dennis Rodman for a PPV, every decision they made was WRONG! Bischoff would be replaced by various other bookers and vice presidents who just as few good ideas as he had left.

Oh yeah, between Bischoff and Vince Russo they lost about $60-80 million dollars. I couldn't do that if I tried.

Check out Bryan Alvarez's book The Death of WCW. It goes into it in great detail and is a hilarious-although sad-read.

Nice to see the nWo winning some matches.

I also like this feud with the Harlem Heat and the Flock. With Benoit winning the title after Raven beat Booker, I get the feeling Booker could turn soon. But I don't see Booker joining the Flock, and I'm not sure he'd be right in the nWo (for this feud anyways).

And Goldberg quietly building up that streak, I see.

JustinPossiblePosted on 06/19/08 at 23:24:30

Good take on WCW so far... the angles are building very well.

Just a couple of things....

Curt's last name is HENNIG not HENNING

You announced the death of Louis Spicoli on Feb 15 but then he appeared on the Feb 27 edition of Thunder as part of the the nWo after Scott Steiner's turn.

And the WWF won the ratings war for the first time in 88 weeks the night Austin first stunned McMahon, not when Tyson appeared.
blslivewirePosted on 06/20/08 at 19:49:23

We're both wrong, sort of. WWF did not beat Nitro until Austin stunned Vince in April of 1998, but it wasn't the first time Vince was stunned. The first "stunning" was in the fall of 1997 after Vince stripped Austin of the IC title since he was out with a neck injury. Remember Vince's awful selling?

Everything that I've posted so far was done a while back so Hennig will have to be Henning until I start posting what I'm doing now (March 1999).

As for my Spicoli error, he stole the Undertaker's gimmick. Actually I had forgotten when he died and had to change a few things. I thought I had found all of afterlife appearances.
JustinPossiblePosted on 06/21/08 at 14:37:10

I don't know how I missed this line:

That was just the begining really, because, with the execption of Bill Goldberg's push and bringing in Dennis Rodman for a PPV, every decision they made was WRONG!
You see bringing in Dennis Rodman as a good decision?

I suppose you liked it when Jay Leno came in too.

;D
