[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 6/19/06

FOLEY MAKES A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING TONIGHT
The show kicked off with Mick Foley standing in the middle of the ring, this week wearing his version of a suit (a flannel shirt and for some reason, a tie). Foley said that what makes Global Championship Wrestling the top promotion in the world is that anything can happen, and he wanted to showcase that tonight. Foley said that after meeting with the GCW Championship Committee, tonight on Explosion, all four titles would be on the line! This announcement could have a huge impact on Super Cade as it would throw the title matches all up in the air. As we knew last week, Cryme Tyme would challenge MNM for the World Tag Team Titles. But also tonight, Gregory Helms would defend the X Title against former champion Christopher Daniels, John Bradshaw Layfield defends the Intercontinental Title against Tommy Dreamer, and in our main event, Brock Lesnar puts the World Heavyweight Title up for grabs against "The Manbeast" Rhyno!

Match #1
World Tag Team Title Match
MNM © (w/ Melina) vs. Cryme Tyme
MNM was furious that they had to defend the World Tag Team Titles tonight, especially against a team that is still largely unknown in Shad Gaspard & JTG, collectively known as Cryme Tyme. They became even more incensed when the first thing that Shad & JTG did was steal their fur coats and promptly sell them to two people in the crowd! To make matters even worse for Johnny Nitro & Shannon Moore, the coats sold for a total of $13. This was all a ploy to get into their heads by Cryme Tyme, and it worked. Nitro & Moore were thrown off their game from the start, which let Cryme Tyme control the pace of the match. Melina saw their spot at Super Cade and their titles slipping away, so she got involved by tripping Shad up. Shad turned his attention to the vixen, which was a mistake as Nitro got him from behind and hit the Moonlight Drive. JTG was cut off by Shannon Moore and this one was in the books.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG) when Nitro pinned S. Gaspard with the Moonlight Drive in 0:08:56.
Rating: *
(MNM retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Once again, Melina proved to be instrumental in MNM retaining their titles. Will she be able to help them do the same thing in six days, or will Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin be 6-time champions?

CHARLIE HAAS TRIES TO GET SHELTON BENJAMIN PUMPED UP FOR THIS SUNDAY
Speaking of, the World's Greatest Tag Team was backstage and Charlie Haas was doing everything in his power to get Shelton Benjamin excited for their chance to be 6-time World Tag Team champions. Benjamin was content on remaining stoic, which in turn got Haas more and more animated. Eventually Benjamin had enough and told Haas to shut up. "I don't need anybody to give me a pep talk, Charlie! I'm going to make absolutely sure we win the tag titles so you'll shut the hell up!" Benjamin stormed away leaving Haas by himself, who simply nodded his head and said, "He's ready."

Match #2
X Title Match
Gregory Helms © vs. Christopher Daniels
Our second of four title matches was next with Gregory Helms defending the X Title against the first X champion, Christopher Daniels. Normally when you have a title opportunity, you wouldn't think that anybody would look past it, but in this instance, that was the case. Daniels is so focused on getting CM Punk in Hell in a Cell that he wasn't focused on Helms. That's a big mistake, as Helms can hurt you even when you're 100% focused. Late in the match, DAFFNEY came out to the ring and was lending Daniels some moral support. It seemed like a legitimate act of support, but the Fallen Angel immediately assumed it was a trick and demanded Daffney go to the back before she got hurt. Daffney's peace offer unintentionally was a distraction as Helms grabbed Daniels and dropped him with the Nightmare on Helms Street. This set up the Shining Wizard and this match was in the books.

Gregory Helms pinned Christopher Daniels with the Shining Wizard in 0:10:02.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Gregory Helms retained the GCW X Title.)

Daffney had a distraught look on her face as she unintentionally cost Daniels this match, but knowing that the Fallen Angel would be furious, she didn't stick around for Daniels to get his wits. This move probably was counterproductive as now Daniels definitely thinks that Daffney did this on purpose.

Match #3
Monty Brown/AJ Styles/Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton/Paul Burchill/Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
All six competitors in Money in the Bank were put into a 6-man tag team match, and neither side was all that happy with the team setup. On one side it was Monty Brown, AJ Styles, and Chris Benoit. Styles & Benoit have had their issues lately, and to say Benoit was an untrustworthy tag team partner would be a vast understatement. On the other side it was Randy Orton, Paul Burchill, and the extremely scary Umaga, the undefeated Samoan Bulldozer. Armando Alejandro Estrada has made it clear that Umaga will destroy whoever is in his path which had to leave Orton & Burchill on edge. The match itself was a good one, but it seemed like it was a matter of time before one of the team imploded. When every member of both teams would just as soon help their own chances of winning Money in the Bank than win this match that becomes a foregone conclusion. It would be the Crippler who would strike at his own team, popping Brown with an elbow out of nowhere while both men were on the apron. Those two began brawling on the floor, essentially leaving Styles by himself in the ring to suffer a 3-on-1 assault, culminating with Burchill hitting an Emerald Erosion to get the duke.

Paul Burchill, Randy Orton and Umaga defeated AJ Styles, Monty Brown and Chris Benoit when Burchill pinned Styles after the Emerald Erosion in 0:09:40.
Rating: ***

At this point, Estrada told Umaga to attack, who did so by entering the ring and leveling Burchill with the Samoan Spike. Estrada then tried to warn Umaga to turn around, but he was too late as Orton dropped the savage with the R.K.O. out of nowhere, the first time we have seen anybody able to put Umaga down like that! Orton stood tall alone in the ring as we cut to the back.

FOLEY ISSUES A WARNING TO BOOKER T & ELIX SKIPPER
Right before we cut to commercial, we cut to Mick Foley's office where Booker T, Elix Skipper, & Sharmell were already there. Booker immediately started running his mouth, but Foley promptly shut him up. Foley warned the trio not to get involved in the John Bradshaw Layfield/Tommy Dreamer match, citing that there would be hell to pay if they did. Booker laughed it off, saying he didn't need to soften Dreamer up in order to beat him. The trio left agreeing to leave Dreamer alone tonight, but Foley didn't seem so sure.

MARIA GETS SOME WORDS FROM BOBBY LASHLEY
Before our next match started, Maria was with Bobby Lashley, the number-one contender for the Intercontinental Title. Maria asked Lashley about the potential of John Bradshaw Layfield losing the Intercontinental Title to Tommy Dreamer. Lashley said that although he'd love to be the IC champion, if JBL loses the title tonight, it won't make him want to tear JBL apart any less at Super Cade. "Title or not, JBL is going to suffer the beating of his life."

Match #4
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont) vs. Tommy Dreamer
Considering a month ago that Tommy Dreamer was the commissioner of GCW, it was pretty amazing that he had a chance to become the Intercontinental champion here in Montreal. Not a lot of guys can go toe-to-toe with JBL, but Dreamer certainly can as he is widely considered one of the toughest men in the sport. Good thing that's the case, because JBL clubbed him early and often. Dreamer toughed through it though and opportunistically hit the Dreamer DDT, but JBL was too close to the ropes and draped his foot across the bottom one. Dreamer strung together a little bit of offense but then made a huge mistake by going to the top rope. He jumped off with a flying crossbody, but JBL caught him and hit a big fallaway slam that was just enough to retain his title.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Tommy Dreamer after a fallaway slam in 0:07:49.
Rating: *** 1/4
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

A game effort from Dreamer, but it just wasn't enough tonight. However, he showed just how tough as nails he is and Booker T will find that out firsthand this Sunday. JBL on the other hand kept his precious title, but he will need to be all this impressive and then some to get past Bobby Lashley at Super Cade.

Match #5
Kurt Angle vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
This next match was a pure wrestling fan's dream as it was the present vs. the future. The present in Kurt Angle, who in six days could be the first 3-time World Heavyweight champion. The future in CM Punk, who many believe is skilled enough to be a future World champion. But tonight they were merely adversaries, and what a wrestling clinic they put on. Usually in a match Angle participates in, he can frustrate his opponents early. Angle tried that by taking Punk to school in the first couple minutes, but Punk kept his cool and even smiled after one of the exchanges that Angle got the better of him on. Punk wasn't about to let Angle walk all over him though as he got in plenty of offense of his own. Punk had Angle reeling several times, even nearly making Angle tap out when he locked on the Anaconda Vice, but Angle escaped. What has helped Angle succeed in this business is his ability to improvise, and he showed that when he somehow got out of the G.T.S. attempt and rolled it into the Ankle Lock, earning himself what was far from an easy victory.

Kurt Angle made CM Punk submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:12:30.
Rating: ****

Angle didn't want to exert himself this much, but when you wrestle CM Punk, you need to if you want to win. This was a good test for Angle as he is going to have to be ready to wrestle an hour this Sunday. Punk on the other hand won't have to worry about wrestling an hour, as I don't think anyone could last 60 minutes in Hell in a Cell. He's just going to hope to survive.

EDGE & CHRISTIAN TELL RHYNO TO BRING THE WORLD TITLE HOME TO MUST SEE TV
Before we cut to commercial before our main event, we cut back to a closeup shot of the near deranged Rhyno just moments before his opportunity to take the World Heavyweight Title from Brock Lesnar. The Manbeast looked extremely focused, but that didn't stop EDGE and CHRISTIAN from trying to motivate him even more. By the time they were done, you could almost literally see steam coming out of Rhyno's nose. This could be very bad for our World Heavyweight champion.

Match #6
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar © vs. Rhyno (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
As our main event began, we were informed by Michael Cole & Paul Heyman that tonight marked the one year anniversary of Brock Lesnar winning the World Heavyweight from Kurt Angle at Super Cade II. If he wanted to eclipse the one year mark, he was going to have to get past the Manbeast that is Rhyno. Commissioner Mick Foley made it clear that Edge & Christian wouldn't be allowed anywhere near the ring during this match, but Rhyno was allowed to have the Brothel at ringside, and as they often do, they were very much involved in trying to distract the Monster From Minnesota in any way they could. Lesnar is going to have to wrestle one hour this Sunday so for him, he wanted to end this match as quickly as he could. Problem is, Rhyno wanted the World Heavyweight Title. Lesnar made a rare mistake by trying to finish off his opponent too quickly, and Rhyno used that to his advantage to get some shots that Lesnar would have preferred not taking. However, even though he took some abuse, Lesnar kicked it up and was able to plant Rhyno with a titanic power bomb.

Brock Lesnar pinned Rhyno after a power bomb in 0:06:08.
Rating: ** ½
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

The bell had barely rung when EDGE & CHRISTIAN were in the ring kicking away at Lesnar. Lesnar tried to fight back and did well for himself for a bit, but when Rhyno got back to his feet, the numbers game was too great as Lesnar hit the canvas and the beatdown continued. The Montreal fans were chanting for Kurt Angle, and as the chants reached their zenith out came Angle for the save! Angle first went after Christian who didn't see Angle was in the ring. He spun Captain Charisma and lifted him with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex! Rhyno then went after Angle with the Gore, but Angle sidestepped and got behind the Manbeast, hitting him with a German suplex! Edge nailed Angle from behind with a forearm to stun him and then hit the ropes for his Spear, but Angle quickly recovered and sidestepped it and tossed Edge over the top rope with the Angle Slam! Angle had completely cleaned the ring and saw that Lesnar was still down, so he got in the pounce position ready to hit Lesnar with an Angle Slam as well, but Lesnar saw what he was going for before he could do it and jumped back into a defensive position. Angle smiled at Lesnar as the two engaged in a staredown that seemed to last forever. When Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle meet this Sunday in the Iron Man match, the landscape of GCW is going to change forever!

Opening Match with MNM and Cryme Tyme was a good showing from the comically pleasing duo, I sense that they may actually get a run with the titles at some point...

Shelton Benjamin is none to happy with the annoying Charlie Haas, I sense that this is really gonna be the last we see of this historic tag team. Shelton may make sure Haas doesn't walk out of the pay per view, let alone walk out as a champion...

Randy Orton stands tall which leads me to believe he won't win Money In The Bank, But he is the most likely candidate I think...

Angle/Punk has all the makings of a good feud should Punk make it out of Hell In A Cell intact. Kurt probably should be looking over his shoulder in coming months, especially if he walks out the champ...

Must See TV is quickly becoming my favorite stable since the beginnings of your circuit when you had The Sensationals...

Brock defeating Rhyno was a forgone conclusion since Angle/Lesnar II is a big money match, good effort from Rhyno and good post match action on the one year anniversary of Lesnar winning the title...

Cant wait for the PPV, should be the biggest one in the history of this circuit...
