[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 6/5/06

Snabbit888Posted on 05/13/08 at 12:28:28

Welcome to Buffalo, New York and welcome to Monday Night Explosion! June is upon us, and that means we are one step closer to Super Cade III! On tonight's show, more matches will be announced for Super Cade, including new competitors in the Money in the Bank match! Speaking of, Monty Brown and Randy Orton would go one-on-one right here tonight! Also, Tommy Dreamer makes his in-ring turn as he takes on Elix Skipper. And what will be the next event in the Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle saga? We will find out here on Monday Night Explosion!

Match #1
Monty Brown vs. Randy Orton
We wasted no time in getting to the wrestling, and we started with a main event caliber match as Monty Brown and Randy Orton locked horns. We know that these two men will be involved in Money in the Bank at Super Cade, and a win there could be a huge catalyst to the World Heavyweight Title. Both of these men are known for their intensity, and we got a healthy dose of that here. This match had the potential to be a great one, but unfortunately for us, UMAGA didn't let that happen. Armando Alejandro Estrada brought out his Samoan Bulldozer, and when you have a man as vicious as Umaga as your charge, you can pretty much do whatever you want. Umaga came in and blasted Orton with a clothesline. When Monty Brown went after him, the Alpha Male was met with a superkick right in the jaw. Referee Charles Robinson threw this match out and went ahead with the unenviable task of controlling Umaga.

Randy Orton and Monty Brown battled to a no contest in 0:06:00.
Rating: **** 1/4

Umaga went on to absolutely destroy both Orton and Brown, wiping both out with the Samoan spike. Umaga's body count continues to grow. Estrada then got on the microphone and threw Umaga's name into the mix for Money in the Bank. With Umaga now in this match, I can't see how anyone but him is going to be victorious.

MNM RUBS MICK FOLEY THE WRONG WAY
We cut back to the office of new commissioner Mick Foley, who was soon joined by MNM. The reigning World Tag Team champions introduced themselves to Foley and tried to be very nice to him, but it was obvious that Foley wasn't buying it. It was only when Melina began flirting with the Hardcore Legend that Foley loosened up a bit. MNM said they hoped to have a much better working relationship with Foley than they did with Dreamer. Foley agreed, telling Johnny Nitro and Shannon Moore that he was a big fan of both, and because of this was going to put them in the main event tonight. This pleased MNM, until Foley let them know they'd be defending the World Tag Team Titles. MNM demanded to know who they'd be facing, but Foley said he wanted to keep it a surprise for a little longer, but told MNM not to worry. "You guys are the best tag team in the world. This will be a piece of cake!" MNM continued to protest, but when they saw Foley's only reaction was a big goofy smile, they relented and left the office.

Match #2
Tommy Dreamer (w/ Lance Cade) vs. Elix Skipper (w/ Booker T & Sharmell)
We were all curious to see how well Tommy Dreamer would fair in his first match in a year and a half, but if there was any ring rust, we couldn't tell as he took on "Prime Time" Elix Skipper. Booker T joined Skipper down at ringside, so the Innovator of Violence countered that by bringing down Lance Cade. Dreamer has never been the most technically gifted man in the ring, but he has two assets that can make him very successful in his return and that is he can brawl with the best of them and take a beating like few others and keep on ticking. Skipper is definitely the quicker of the two and he tried to use that to keep Dreamer at bay, but Dreamer got a hold of Skipper, he ground and pound until he drilled Prime Time with a powerslam to get the 3.

Tommy Dreamer pinned Elix Skipper after a powerslam in 0:05:03.
Rating: ****

Booker looked to jump into the ring to attack Dreamer, but Cade was in the ring in a hurry, causing Booker to think better of it. It's definitely going to be something to see when Dreamer and Booker do get a hold of each other.

THE BULLDOGS QUESTION CHRIS BENOIT ABOUT HIS ACTIONS
Backstage Frankie Kazarian & Harry Smith were on a mission to find Chris Benoit to ask him about what is going on with him as of late, but they were not happy with the results when they found him. The Bulldogs asked what was up with their mentor's recent actions and attitude, but instead the Crippler turned it on them and verbally ran them into the ground. Benoit told them both they'd never amount to anything in wrestling and that they're both two of the biggest mistakes he's ever made in his career. The Bulldogs didn't say a word - they just stared at Benoit until he told them to get out of his sight. What a jerk this guy has become. Even worse yet, we've since learned that Benoit will be involved in the Money in the Bank

Match #3
Shark Boy/Cryme Tyme (DEBUT!!!) vs. Edge/Christian/Rhyno (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
Edge, Christian, & Rhyno have formed a cohesive unit (mostly to protect Edge from the wrath of Matt Hardy). They wanted to show off this team by taking on any three wrestlers who would accept their challenge. The first man to come out was Shark Boy, which garnered a good laugh from the trio in the ring. Their laughs were quickly stifled though when Shark Boy brought out his partners, a brand new surprise team in SHAD GASPARD and JTG, collectively known as Cryme Tyme! We didn't know a lot about these two, but we learned quickly that they can go in the ring. They got in some of great offense in this match, but unfortunately would come out on the losing end as Shark Boy was caught by Edge's Spear.

Rhyno, Edge and Christian defeated Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG) and Shark Boy when Edge pinned Shark Boy with the Spear in 0:04:07.
Rating: ** ¾

MATT HARDY HAS A CHALLENGE FOR SUPER CADE
After the match, Matt Hardy's music kicked up to a huge pop and out he came to the top of the ramp, flanked by Rob Van Dam & Abyss. Hardy had a mic as well and was out with a challenge. Since he knew that Edge would never accept a challenge for a singles match, instead challenged Edge, Christian, & Rhyno to a 6-man tag at Super Cade. Edge was hesitant at first, but at the urging of Christian & Rhyno (and a packed house calling him a coward), Edge accepted and we will have this match at Super Cade.

MICK FOLEY CALLS BROCK LESNAR & KURT ANGLE INTO HIS OFFICE
We cut to the back where a camera is following World champion Brock Lesnar into the office of Mick Foley. Lesnar is pissed to see that KURT ANGLE is already there. The two engage in a tense staredown before Foley cuts that tension with a lame attempt at a joke. Foley went on and said that he knows that the pressure of wrestling for the World Heavyweight Title on the grandest stage of them all in an Iron Man match puts the two on edge, but that they need to remember that they are still friends and it doesn't have to go this route. Foley reminds them that they were even World Tag Team champions together, which gave him an idea. "I got it! Tonight, in our main event, it's going to be MNM defending the tag team titles against you, Brock Lesnar, and you, Kurt Angle!" Lesnar & Angle were both unhappy with this ruling, but Foley was so excited by his own matchmaking abilities that he ignored them until they finally left the room on their own regard.

GREGORY HELMS OFFERS AN OPEN CHALLENGE
X champion Gregory Helms came out with a microphone, and said in two weeks time he has already shown that no one can beat him and he will be the one that puts the X division on the map. He has already beaten CM Punk and Shark Boy, and declared that nobody in GCW could defeat him. Helms said that anyone was welcome to come down to the ring to face him in a match and that if they could beat him, they could have a title shot at Super Cade. The crowd chanted for Rey Mysterio Jr., and on cue, out he came! Helms in his completely arrogant way didn't break stride, telling Mysterio he would gladly kick his ass here in Buffalo. Mysterio didn't say anything, instead just slapping the champion across the face and the match was on!

Match #4
Non-Title Match
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Gregory Helms (X champion)
Mysterio came out fast right out of the gate and almost scored several pinfalls early on, but Helms managed to escape each one just in the nick of time. Helms was trying desperately to get Mysterio on the mat, but that's a lot easier said than done. He needed a break, and he received it when he caught Mysterio with a dropkick while Mysterio was trying to springboard in, knocking him hard to the floor. From there, Helms went on the offensive with a large amount of aggression, using his mat-based power style torture Mysterio and put him in a lot of trouble. A couple of replays showed that Mysterio hit the concrete extremely hard and there were talks of this match being stopped, but Mysterio insisted he was okay and moved forward. This could have been a mistake as Helms went in for the kill, laying quite the beating on Mysterio. Helms looked to put Mysterio away as he went for a power bomb, but Mysterio surprised him with a rana and got a quick flash pin!

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Gregory Helms after a rana in 0:08:45.
Rating: ***

Helms couldn't believe what just happened, but despite Mysterio's hard fall, he pushed through and picked up a huge win, earning himself an X Title match at the biggest pay-per-view of the year!

JBL LEARNS HE SHOULD KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT
Our next segment showed John Bradshaw Layfield burst into Mick Foley's office, not showing much respect for the office. JBL told Foley that he knew he was responsible for signing the Intercontinental Title match against Bobby Lashley at Super Cade. He said that Lashley would be nothing without him and that he doesn't deserve a shot at the IC Title. Foley said he understood where JBL was coming from, and said he wouldn't have to defend the IC Title at Super Cade... because he might not be the IC champion anymore. Sure, he'd still have to wrestle Lashley regardless, but right now he has to go defend the title against AJ Styles! JBL was furious, but Foley made it clear that his decision... was FINAL.

Match #5
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont) vs. AJ Styles
This was a huge opportunity for AJ Styles, who nobody doubts has all the skills in the world but just needs the chance. Well this was his chance to make a huge statement by becoming the Intercontinental champion. JBL is a bruiser and on a normal night you'd expect him just to kick the crap out of Styles. But Styles isn't called Phenomenal for nothing, and he proved that here with his performance. The crowd was behind AJ all the way, and he fed off that energy. Sure, Styles took a beating in this match as anyone is bound to against the IC champ, but he kept fighting back. There was a feel in the air that we were going to see a title change tonight, and Styles came within an eyelash on several instances. Styles was doing everything he could think of to secure the win, but he couldn't find that one big move to keep JBL's shoulders on the canvas for the three. Eventually he just ran out of chances as he was caught trying for a rana and power bombed hard onto the canvas. Unfortunately for Styles, it drove all the air out of his lungs and he was unable to kick out.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned AJ Styles after a power bomb in 0:13:08.
Rating: *** 1/4
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

JBL narrowly escapes with the IC Title still in his possession, but he was in a drag out fight. Styles received a standing ovation for his efforts. He wouldn't leave completely empty-handed though as it was announced that because of his performance here, Mick Foley has added AJ Styles to the Money in the Bank match at Super Cade.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
World Tag Team Title Match
MNM © (w/ Melina) vs. Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle
The Buffalo crowd was curious to see how well Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle would be able to work together with the World Tag Team Titles on the line, but no one was more curious than Johnny Nitro & Shannon Moore. Though the team was very hesitant to work together early on, as the match progressed, the competitive spirit of Lesnar & Angle kicked in and the team got it together. What resulted was one of the best tag team matches in Explosion history. Not only did Lesnar & Angle have it together, but MNM turned up their game as well given who their competition was. For over 15 minutes, this match went back and forth with both teams displaying what makes them champions. But given how big the match at Super Cade is for the landscape of GCW, there was a feeling that Lesnar & Angle were going to unravel. And unravel they did. Angle had regained some momentum and looked to be putting the final nails in Shannon Moore's coffin. Angle was laying it to Moore, but Moore ducked out of the way of a forearm shot from Angle. The forearm still connected though - unfortunately against the jaw of Brock Lesnar. Lesnar's temper immediately kicked in and he fired back with a forearm to Angle. The two almost came to more blows, but held back and tried to pull it together. Unfortunately during this time, Moore tagged Nitro in who snuck up behind Angle and dropped him with the Moonlight Drive. 1, 2, 3.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle when Nitro pinned K. Angle with the Moonlight Drive in 0:15:51.
Rating: **** ½
(MNM retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Lesnar made zero effort to break up the pin and just let it happen. He didn't try to help Angle up either, instead just grabbing the World Heavyweight title and walking to the back as the show came to an end.
