[GCW] Mayhem - 5/21/06

Snabbit888Posted on 05/04/08 at 22:39:04

Welcome to Detroit, Michigan and welcome to Mayhem, live on pay-per-view! Tonight's event is huge, and will start to clear up the picture that will be Super Cade III! We had a tremendous card lined up tonight including Chris Benoit taking on Umaga, CM Punk defending the X Title against Rey Mysterio Jr., Gregory Helms, and Christopher Daniels, Abyss & Rob Van Dam take on Edge & Christian with Matt Hardy's reinstatement on the line, and in our huge main event, World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar teams with #1 contender Kurt Angle to take on Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield & Bobby Lashley!

Match #1
AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
Before this match began, we got highlights of the previous two victories AJ Styles holds over Randy Orton, as well as the Legend Killer's vicious assault on the Phenomenal One in the tag team match a week ago. Orton is a very egotistical competitor, and he hates losing and wanted to destroy Styles to get back his pride. The advantage that Styles had though was that he the mental advantage - he knows that he can beat Orton, whereas Orton can't say the same. Styles was one step ahead of Orton most of this match, using Orton's ultra-aggressiveness to keep the upperhand. However, there is no move more explosive in all of GCW than Orton's RKO which was shown when he hit it out of nowhere to finally pin Styles' shoulders to the mat.

Randy Orton pinned AJ Styles with the RKO in 0:07:14.
Rating: *** 1/4

It wasn't easy, but Orton was finally able to defeat Styles. Now what's next for the third generation superstar?

Match #2
Rhyno vs. Kenny Dykstra
Kenny Dykstra attacked his own partner Hardcore Holly a few weeks back, putting him on the shelf as Hardcore required elbow surgery. Dykstra has wanted to wrestle singles match for quite some time, and Commissioner Tommy Dreamer "rewarded" him with a singles match tonight against the Manbeast Rhyno! This is not exactly what Dykstra had in mind because as much raw natural talent that he has, Rhyno is a freight train and Dykstra was on the tracks. During the match, there was a commotion in the crowd as we saw the suspended BOOKER T and his wife SHARMELL make their way down through the crowd to the front row. Security officials stopped them, but when they presented them with tickets, they had no choice but to let Booker and Sharmell go to their front row seats. Back in the ring, Dykstra barely got out of the blocks before Rhyno overpowered him, picking up the win with the Gore.

Rhyno pinned Kenny Dykstra with the Gore in 0:04:56.
Rating: *** 1/4

Rhyno wasn't done as he set up a table in the corner of the ring, waited for Dykstra to get back to his feet, and proceeded to Gore Kenny right through the table! He Gored him so hard, that Dykstra literally lost a boot. The medical staff rushed down and put Dykstra on a stretcher. Dykstra asked for a singles match, and this is what he got.

TOMMY DREAMER COMMENTS ON THE BOOKER T SITUATION
We cut to the office of Tommy Dreamer as Michael Cole and Paul Heyman asked him about the suspended Booker T purchasing a front row ticket to Mayhem. Dreamer said that obviously the thought doesn't thrill him, but technically there is nothing he can do about Booker being in the arena if he purchased a ticket. Dreamer did go on to say though that to ensure nothing nefarious goes on in the main event, Dreamer would be down at ringside as a safety precaution.

Match #3
Monty Brown vs. Paul Burchill
This match has been brewing for weeks as Paul Burchill has taken it upon himself to taunt and harass Monty Brown, making claims that the Alpha Male is incapable of winning the big one. It has been made clear through Brown himself that he has his goal set on becoming World Heavyweight champion before his time in GCW is up, but as of yet, he has been unable to make that happen. Burchill is using this fact to his advantage and hoping to help make a name for himself in the process.

The match itself was a great one as not many people were giving Burchill much of a shot going in, but every week he is proving himself to have a considerable amount of skill. And his mind games he's been playing on Brown leading up to this match seemed to have worked as he was all over Brown this match. If it hadn't been for one errant splash attempt in the corner from Burchill, causing him to nail his head on the ring post, this match could have easily ended differently. Burchill knocked himself loopy when he hit the post, allowing the Alpha Male to surprise him with the Pounce out of nowhere and get a well-deserved and hard fought victory.

Monty Brown pinned Paul Burchill with the Pounce in 0:12:48.
Rating: ****

Brown may have won the match, but he didn't do so in the convincing fashion we thought that he might. I have a feeling we haven't heard the end of this one.

MNM OFFER SOME INSIGHT INTO THE FATAL FOURWAY
Before our next match, we heard from World Tag Team champions MNM, Johnny Nitro & Shannon Moore, along with the sexy and devious Melina. MNM were asked if they had any preference as to who they fought at Super Cade. In their ever arrogant nature, MNM said it didn't matter who won this Fatal Fourway, because the final result would be the same - MNM would still be the GCW World Tag Team champions.

Match #4
Winners receive World Tag Team Title shot at Super Cade
The Bulldogs vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt vs. The Blue World Order
All four teams involved here knew what was at stake - a guaranteed spot on the card at Super Cade III, for the tag team titles no less. Charlie Haas has been pushing really hard to get back the World Tag Team Titles since he and Shelton Benjamin lost them a month ago. Benjamin hasn't been quite as adamant on the chase back to the titles, but he's a competitor and is definitely going to give his all in a match. This match was a huge opportunity for the other three teams involved as well. The World's Greatest Tag Team has more than established their place in the tag division, being former 5-time champions. The other teams knew this was a huge opportunity to get themselves to the front of the line. Problem is, Haas & Benjamin are really, really good, and they proved this once again tonight by pulling out this victory.

Four Corners Match:
The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated The bWo (The Blue Meanie and Stevie Richards), The Bulldogs (Harry Smith and Frankie Kazarian) and Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt when C. Haas pinned Smith after a crucifix in 0:12:06.
Rating: *** ¾

After the match, Charlie Haas went into full celebration mode, jumping around like they just DID win the titles, while Benjamin was a bit more subdued. Either way, we know we will have a great title match at Super Cade III - MNM vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team.

Match #5
X Title Match
CM Punk © (w/ Daffney) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Gregory Helms vs. Christopher Daniels
There is no question that the four men involved in this match are pound for pound some of the greatest wrestlers on the planet. Add to that all of the personal issues involved between Gregory Helms and Rey Mysterio Jr., plus the backstory between CM Punk and Christopher Daniels, and that led to a crazy environment. And as an added bonus, CM Punk's X Title was on the line to boot. This match was wrestled under tornado rules which made it a bit of a cluster, if not action packed. This match for much of its duration paired off into two individual matches - Helms & Mysterio and Punk & Daniels. Punk has tried for weeks now to convince Daniels that he is a changed man, but the Fallen Angel has become obsessed with proving otherwise. Helms on the other hand is obviously a changed man since returning to GCW, a change Rey Mysterio fears is for the worse.

Because of the nature of the match, no one really knew how it was going to end until the end. Mysterio had been wiped out by Helms when caught him with dropkick when he went for a springboard, knocking him to the floor. Punk then caught Helms from behind and looked primed to hit the Go 2 Sleep, but Daniels came out of nowhere and absolutely blasted Punk in the back with a chair! Helms got to his feet and turned around to see Daniels holding the chair and went into a defensive stance, but Daniels was just staring down at Punk's unconscious body. Helms tentatively waited until Punk got to his knees and plastered him with the Shining Wizard. Three seconds later, we had a brand new X champion.

Four Corners Match:
Gregory Helms defeated Christopher Daniels, Rey Mysterio Jr. and CM Punk when G. Helms pinned Punk with the Shining Wizard in 0:13:56.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Gregory Helms won the GCW X Title.)

The crowd booed mercilessly as Helms was awarded the X Title. Helms held the title high over his head, only for Daniels to nail him in the back with the chair as well. Daniels stared at the destruction he had caused before throwing the chair down to the canvas and heading to the back without saying a word.

BROCK LESNAR AND KURT ANGLE PATCH THINGS UP
We cut to the back where Brock Lesnar was taping himself up in preparation for our main event when KURT ANGLE entered the room and engaged Lesnar in a staredown. It looked like Lesnar was about to apologize when Angle cut him off, saying he didn't want to hear any excuses as tonight, it didn't matter. "After we beat JBL and Lashley tonight, you and I can take care of whatever we need to take care of. But just keep one thing in mind - no matter what happens tonight, I'm coming for that World Heavyweight Title." Angle left, leaving Lesnar speechless.

Match #6
Chris Benoit vs. Umaga (w/ Armando Alejandro Estrada)
Umaga made his debut in the Deadly Draw match and more or less dominated it for his time in the ring. Since then, Armando Alejandro Estrada's savage has been terrorizing GCW rings. The Crippler himself has suffered Umaga's wrath on more than one occasion. Benoit has made his efforts to derail the Samoan Bulldozer, but thus far it hasn't worked. Benoit was the first man to give this monster a run for his money. But truth be told, this match was never really in doubt as Umaga takes the win with the Samoan Spike.

Umaga pinned Chris Benoit with the Samoan Spike in 0:10:24.
Rating: *** 1/4

Umaga picks up an extremely dominant victory. And what makes this even scarier is that this wasn't over just anybody - this was over former World champion Chris Benoit. If Umaga can do this to the Rabid Wolverine, imagine what damage he could do in GCW.

Match #7
If Abyss/RVD win, Matt Hardy is reinstated
Abyss/Rob Van Dam (w/ Maria) vs. Edge/Christian (w/ Lita, Mickie James, Gail Kim)
Edge told Christian that he had a plan for this match, and he certainly did. Seeing how Edge had full control of Matt Hardy ever being reinstated, he also had full control of how this match would be contested. Before the match started, Edge got on the mic and let everyone know that he had made a little change to the match and it would now be contested under no disqualification rules... ONLY for Edge & Christian. The crowd booed this heavily, but it didn't seem to phase Abyss & Rob Van Dam one bit. They were here to wrestle and wrestle they did. Edge & Christian did everything in their power to use the no-DQ rules to their advantage, using chokes and a well placed low blow to get ahead. Despite this, it looked like Abyss & RVD were on their way to victory when RHYNO ran out of nowhere and hit RVD with the Gore! There was nothing referee Chad Patton could do given the rules, but it also meant that he could do nothing to stop MATT HARDY from jumping in the ring and nailing Rhyno with the Twist of Fate! Edge was demanding a disqualification, but he couldn't do so as Rhyno wasn't a part of the match. While Edge was arguing this, he didn't see Christian getting drilled with the Black Hole Slam and pinned right behind him, putting this one in the books. Matt Hardy is officially back in GCW!

Abyss and Rob Van Dam defeated Edge and Christian when Abyss pinned Christian with the Black Hole Slam in 0:07:26.
Rating: ** ¾

Edge could not believe what just happened. Christian was pinned and that means Matt Hardy is reinstated! His disbelief turned to fear when he had the realization that Hardy was free to attack him now with no repercussions. Hardy made a jump at Edge, but the Rated R Superstar got out of the ring just in time to avoid the impending beatdown. Edge barely got away, but he won't be able to run away forever.

JBL AGAIN TRIES TO MOTIVATES LASHLEY
We only had one more match left, and that was our huge tag team main event. Much like last week, John Bradshaw Layfield decided to take this time to try to 'motivate' Bobby Lashley, by telling him how important it was that they defeat Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle. "This is my chance to get in the main event at Super Cade, and I'm not going to let anything stand in my way. Do you understand?" Lashley didn't appreciate being talked down to in such a manner as he showed by grabbing JBL by the throat and pushing him against the wall. "You just take care of your end of this. I'll do the rest." Lashley let go of JBL, leaving the self-made millionaire gasping for air, but with a sick and sadistic smile on his face.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Kurt Angle vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (Intercontinental champion)/Bobby Lashley
It's very rare that you get to see four of the biggest superstars in all of wrestling in one match, but that's exactly what we had with our main event featuring the two top singles champions and the number-one-contender to the World Title. Brock Lesnar & Kurt Angle had a little miscommunication a week ago on Explosion when Lesnar accidentally hit Angle with a chair, allowing Lashley to get the win. They appeared to have patched things up though, at least for this match.

This match had a separate element too as Commissioner Tommy Dreamer was down at ringside keeping an eye on the suspended Booker T, who was sitting in the first row conversing with Sharmell. It looked as if Dreamer's presence was enough to counteract anything Booker was planning on doing. That was until referee Nick Patrick was bumped late in this match when a Stock Market Crash attempt from JBL went awry. At this point, Angle hit JBL with the Angle Slam and then locked on the Ankle Lock while Lesnar and Lashley were battling on the outside. JBL was tapping in the ring, but with the referee down, the match couldn't be called. At this point, Booker T jumped over the jail and into the ring, nailing Angle in the back of the head with the Scissor Kick! Booker punched away at Angle as Tommy Dreamer got in the ring and demanded that Booker stop or he'd be fired. When Booker refused, Dreamer got physical, nailing Booker in the head with a big kick to a huge ovation from the crowd. Dreamer, the original innovator of violence, had lost it and was brawling with Booker T. The two fell into the crowd and brawled all the way to the back as the crowd wildly cheered them on.

Back in the ring, Lashley had jumped in and looked to be setting up Angle for a spear, but when he charged at Angle, he missed and accidentally nailed JBL instead! Lashley didn't seem all that broken up about it, but it did allow Lesnar to get back in the ring and clothesline him over the top and to the floor. Lesnar then called for the end, lifting JBL up and planting him with the F-5 to get the three as a groggy Nick Patrick made the count.

Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar defeated Bobby Lashley and John Bradshaw Layfield when Lesnar pinned JBL with the F-5 in 0:21:45.
Rating: *** ½

After the match, Lesnar and Angle celebrated their hard fought victory. Patrick handed Lesnar his World Heavyweight title, and when he did, Kurt Angle grabbed Lesnar from behind and dropped him with the Angle Slam! A little measure of payback and definitely some mind games played by the former World champion as we continue toward Super Cade III. The show went off the air with Angle standing over Lesnar and holding the World Heavyweight Title.

Great card and a great way to build to the big PPV. I assume the Super Cade is the marquee show of the year.
Snabbit888Posted on 05/07/08 at 03:38:13

That is correct.  It is my Wrestlemania.
