TNM On Vista 64

ChicagoRickPosted on 09/17/09 at 18:35:26

Ok everyone, I'm sure you're all sick and tired of seeing this by now, but I really need help.  I've looked through prior posts and have tried the different suggestions, but nothing seems to work.  Now keep in mind I'm no pc whiz by any means, I'm more of a casual user, but I'm a HUGE fan of TNM and I've got the itch to play again.  That said, I'll walk you through the steps I took and where I'm getting stuck:

1 - I got a brand new pc with Vista 64 (I know, big mistake)

2 - Downloaded TNM7SE build 5c trial version

3 - Downloaded Dosbox v 0.73

4 - Placed TNM folder on my C drive and had dosbox point to my TNM folder (mount c c:\TNM)

From there I can get to the startup screen in TNM but when it gets to the last step ("Finish Installation"), I just get a message saying "Determining your system speed. Please Wait."  I emailed Oliver about this and he suggested waiting up to a minute, since Dosbox is rather slow.  I left my pc on overnight and the next morning...nothing, still the same spot it was from the night before.  I've tried everything - uninstalling and reinstalling both TNM and Dosbox, switching files off of "read only", jacking the CPU cycles way up on Dosbox...all with the same results.  I'm at the point now where I'm considering going backwards and putting Windows XP 32-bit on my pc, not just for TNM but just because I hate Vista in general.

Sorry about the long post, but any help would be appreciated.  I love this game and want to get back into playing it again.  Keep in mind I'm a complete noob when it comes to pc dynamics, so go easy on me  :)

It's probably a big no-no for me to suggest this but why don't you obtain an older, more compatible version of windows and have a dual boot setup?

If I'm not totally mistaken, the installer doesn't work in DosBox.

If you can install TNM somewhere else, then transfer the installed version to your 64bit machine, it should work fine (that's what I had to do) (64bit Windows, whether it's XP, Vista, or Win7 just cannot run TNM natively)

Alternative #2 (haven't tried it, but it SHOULD work)

Windows 7's XP Mode should be able to run the installer (I know it runs XP, but it's speed makes DosBox look fast by comparison).

Again, install from there, then copy over to the main OS and run it in DosBox.

Thanks!  I'll give it a shot.  This is another stupid question, I know...but I have an external hard drive, and I'm thinking I can just copy an installed version of TNM from my old pc to my external, then just copy that from my external to my new pc, and then run it through Dosbox...that's the impression I get when I read the FAQ on how to move TNM to a new PC in TNM 3:16.  Does that make sense or am I way off?
pszPosted on 09/18/09 at 00:32:36

That's pretty much what I was suggesting, yes :->
ChicagoRickPosted on 09/18/09 at 05:29:11

Woohoo! I got it working!  I copied it from my old pc and put it on my external hard drive, then copied that to my new pc, then loaded up dosbox, cranked up the CPU cycles, and it works great!!

Thanks so much for your help!  I can't believe it was that easy all along...told you I was a noob at this stuff haha!

Tip for all dosbox users - I set the match speed delay from the standard 3930 all the way down to 50, and it works like a charm.

Is there a way to copy and paste in DosBox.

And XP mode is great if the computer you have doesn't have certain Intel processors that can handle VT.

Doesn't the normal Dos commandos work in DosBox?

I mean

COPY c:\TM7\*.* d:\TM7\*.*

I guess I'm talking about being able to copy stuff from a word document into TNM Circuit Editor for match writeups.

I'm installing Windows 7 right now. I'm bidding on Windows XP on eBay, so I'm going to install that as a virtual machine to see if that helps.

Er....

If you have Win7, why not just use the Virtual XP?

(I still think DosBox is better for vanilla TNM ;->)
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 10/26/09 at 03:18:22

Would love to but I only have home premium and my processor doesn't support VT apparently. (Intel Core 2 Duo).

The TNM Members ChampPosted on 10/26/09 at 03:28:52

Although, I wonder if I installed Virtual Box and used the 32 bit Windows 7 CD, if that would work too? (I have a 64 bit system)
pszPosted on 10/26/09 at 03:50:09

Core 2 Duo most definately supports VT, as long as it's one of these:

Core 2 Duo E6300, E6400, E6320, E6420, E6540, E6550, E6600, E6700, E6750, E6850 (Conroe)
Core 2 Duo E5400, E7600, E8200, E8300, E8400, E8500, E8600 and some versions of the E7400 and E7500 (Wolfdale)

(I have a Core 2 Quad)

As for Win7 Home, I dunno. On Win7 Pro Retail, I had to download Virtual XP seperately.

As for the Win7 32-bit: It SHOULD work. Vista is Windows 6.0, and Win 7 is 6.1, so it shouldn't be much of a difference.
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 10/26/09 at 04:40:27

I have T5800. That's probably why.
pszPosted on 10/26/09 at 13:56:36

Yup. That'd be why.
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 10/26/09 at 22:18:38

Which is weird since I can still virtualize through Virtual Box.
wicked_rexPosted on 10/27/09 at 00:05:15

I downloaded the latest version on my new laptop (with Vista on it) - as I posted in another post - but, I think I'm gonna wait until Win7 is uploaded onto my system over the weekend. I don't know much about this whole thing, but I'm only hoping that this is the best thing to do.
The TNM Members ChampPosted on 10/30/09 at 00:32:40

Wow, TNM7 works great in Virtual Box through Windows XP. Got it running yesterday.
