[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/20/06

Snabbit888Posted on 03/17/08 at 02:49:34

The road to Super Cade officially starts now as we start the countdown to Deadly Draw, live from Newark, New Jersey for Monday Night Explosion! Tons on the docket tonight including another celebration from Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield, Charlie Haas takes on Johnny Nitro, the unlikely duo of Christopher Daniels and CM Punk take on Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt, and so much more! What a wild ride this is going to be!

CHRIS BENOIT WANTS ONE MORE SHOT, BUT SOMEONE HAS OTHER PLANS
The show kicked off with Chris Benoit, who came within mere moments of regaining the World Heavyweight Title last night at Proving Ground. Benoit grabbed a microphone and gave Lesnar his props for his successful title defense, but he reminded the Monster From Minnesota that the Crippler dominated the contest and with one blink of an eye he could just as easily be the champion right now. Benoit said he wanted one more shot at the World Title and he wanted it TONIGHT. We thought Lesnar would come out to answer the challenge, but instead we got BOOKER T and SHARMELL. Booker grabbed the microphone and told Benoit that he had been waiting for almost two long years for another crack at the World Heavyweight Title, busting his ass left and right. He said that Benoit has had his chances, and it's Booker T's time. Sharmell added that if the "Vanilla Midget" was smart, he'd get out of the ring now and let Tommy Dreamer declare Booker the number-one-contender. Dreamer did indeed come out, but instead of making Booker the top challenger for the title, he announced our main event tonight would be Booker vs. Benoit, winner moves onto Deadly Draw to challenge for the gold. Booker T's reaction was as expected, but he promised that he would win and be the next World Heavyweight champion.

Match #1
Charlie Haas (w/ Shelton Benjamin) vs. Johnny Nitro (w/ Shannon Moore/Melina)
Before this match even started, it was announced that the World's Greatest Tag Team are already scheduled for a title defense since re-capturing the World Tag Team Titles, and that will be against the team that brutally attacked them a night ago, MNM. Tonight a representative from each team in the form of Charlie Haas and Johnny Nitro were chosen to compete in a singles match. Haas was definitely a little worse for wear after the beating he received last night, but he was being powered by rage which he gladly took out on Nitro, picking up the win with a picture perfect German suplex.

Charlie Haas pinned Johnny Nitro after a German suplex in 0:07:44.
Rating: ***

Shannon Moore jumped in the ring right after the bell and went for the attack, but Shelton Benjamin cut him off with a springboard clothesline, showing his great athleticism. MNM made a hasty retreat, but this one is far from over.

EDGE ASKS MARIA TO JOIN HIS BROTHEL
Our beautiful backstage interview, Maria, interviewed "The Rated R Superstar" Edge, who was with his Brothel - Mickie James, Lita, and Gail Kim. Maria first asked where Lance Storm was, to which Edge responded that Lance has decided to go back to Calgary and rest, which is well deserved. The interview then took a weird turn as Edge began to put the moves on Maria, asking her to join his Brothel, which the three women all seemed to approve of greatly. Maria smiled and giggled, but said she couldn't because she already had a boyfriend. Edge was perturbed and asked who, to which Maria responded with MATT HARDY. This set the Rated R Superstar into a rage, because there may be no one on the planet that Edge despises more than Matt Hardy. Edge reminded Maria that Hardy will never wrestle in GCW again, and if she was smart, she'd hitch herself to a better horse.

Match #2
Christopher Daniels (X champion)/CM Punk (w/ Daffney) vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
I never thought that we would see a time when Christopher Daniels and CM Punk would be on the same team, but I'll be damned if it didn't happen tonight as they paired up to take on Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt. Punk shocked everyone when he saved Daniels from a beating by Kash and Hoyt last night. It's impossible to ever figure out what Punk is really thinking, and that showed again here in this one. Punk and Daniels surprisingly co-existed well throughout this match, showing some surprising teamwork. That is, until late in the match Punk shocked us again by throwing powder in his own partner's eyes while the referee had his back turned! Kid kash used this to hit a flying back bodypress and get the 3.

Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt defeated Christopher Daniels and CM Punk when Kash pinned C. Daniels after a flying back bodypress in 0:06:57.
Rating: *** 1/4

Daniels was in a considerable amount of discomfort, but won't miss any action. But why did Punk turn on Daniels so fast? We will find out next week when Michael Cole will interview Punk in the middle of the ring.

JBL ANNOUNCES THAT HE IS STILL THE GREATEST IC CHAMPION OF ALL-TIME
For the second straight month, we were treated to an overly elaborate celebration for John Bradshaw Layfield's retaining of the Intercontiental Title over Rob Van Dam a night ago. The confetti fell, and JBL even unveiled a giant picture of him commemorating his victory from the night before. JBL said that he is convinced that he could beat anybody in Global Championship Wrestling and that he would be the IC champion until the day he retires. JBL said he is so confident that he had Tommy Dreamer make a 16-man battle royal with the winner going on to Deadly Draw to challenge him for the gold.

Match #3
16-man Battle Royal - Winner gets IC Title shot at Deadly Draw
Participants: Rob Van Dam, Abyss, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton, Monty Brown, Edge, Stevie Richards, The Blue Meanie, AJ Styles, Paul Burchill, Rey Mysterio Jr., Rhyno, Elix Skipper, Frankie Kazarian, Harry Smith, Gregory Helms
This match was a who's who in GCW, and this was a huge opportunity for all of these men involved as it shoots them right to the top of the IC Title mountain. It was also announced during this match that along with the winner getting the title shot, the final 3 competitors before that will be in the Deadly Draw match. It didn't take long before the first elimination was made, as the ring of wrestlers decided that Abyss was the most dangerous threat and if they let him get on a roll, he could easily dominate this match. He wouldn't get that chance as he was the first man eliminated.

AJ Styles would be the next to go as Elix Skipper got a measure of revenge by managing to get the Phenomenal One out of the ring. The following two eliminations were a bit surprising, as I swear to you if I didn't see it myself, but the Blue World Order actually looked like a capable team, dumping not only Harry Smith, but Rhyno from the ring as well! How they managed this huge streak of luck is beyond me, but either way, we were down to 12.

As the ring started to empty a bit, the standouts of this match began to come forth, and one of those men was Edge. Edge seemed to have this hit and run tactic down, as he was able to inflict a lot of damage while receiving very little of it. He also made the next elimination, luring Frankie Kazarian into rushing at him and then ducking, sending the Future to the floor. Another man who was shining in this match was the man who almost took the IC Title last night, Rob Van Dam, who wanted more than anything another shot at JBL. RVD got a step closer by breaking up the bWo's little party by getting the Blue Meanie's tubby self out of the ring.

One thing that had gone largely unnoticed up until this point was the return of the man formerly known as The Hurricane, now going by his real name Gregory Helms. Helms also returned equipped with a brand new nasty attitude. The goofy exterior was gone, and Helms showed that by going right after one of the biggest dogs in the match, the baddest cat from the Serengeti, Monty Brown. Brown was taken aback a bit by Helms' bravado, and even more so by the fact that Helms was kicking his ass there for a bit. But Brown's power advantage would rear its head as he caught Helms with a reverse neckbreaker and then sent him over the top. An impressive showing for Helms, but he tonight would not be his night.

Another man who had largely gone ignored up to this point was JBL's enforcer, Bobby Lashley. He hadn't done a whole lot in the match as truthfully, many of the other superstars were avoiding him. One wrestler who had no intentions of doing so as he never backs down was the smallest man in the match, Rey Mysterio Jr. Lashley had literally got done knocking everyone else in the ring to the canvas except for Mysterio. Mysterio got right in Lashley's face and even shoved him, which riled the crowd up, but also riled up Lashley who destroyed him with a clothesline. This didn't look good for Mysterio as lashley hit him with a powerslam and a side suplex. Lashley threw Mysterio up against the ropes, but Mysterio surprised Lashley with a flying headscissors that sent Lashley flying over the top to a huge pop from the crowd. Lashley tried to get back in the ring but was restrained by officials. Elix Skipper tried to blindside Mysterio, but Mysterio sidestepped and sent Skipper crashing into Lashley on the floor! Lashley responded by violently tossing Prime Time into the guardrail and letting Mysterio know that he was going to get his ass kicked. To make this even stranger, JBL almost seemed happy that Lashley was out as there's no chance he'll have to wrestle him at Deadly Draw.

As we were down to 7, there was one wrestler who stuck out like a sore thumb, and that was Steve Richards. Dancin' Stevie took this opportunity to get in the middle of the ring and literally call out everyone else. All this got him was on the receiving end of a move from the other 6 before Monty Brown would T-Bone suplex him and toss him to the floor. Everyone then paired up after that with RVD and Burchill tangling, Mysterio and Edge, and Orton jumping Brown from behind and trying to dump him out of the ring. Orton came close to getting the Alpha Male out, but Brown hooked the ropes like his life depended on it and refused to lose. Orton's frustrations mounted causing him to make a bad choice by going to the top rope. RVD saw him up there and crotched him on the turnbuckle, opening the window for Brown to hit a forearm shiver to knock the Legend Killer to the cold floor. This brought us down to 5, which shortly after would become 4 when Paul Burchill was sent to the locker room courtesy of Rob Van Dam.

We had the final four, and what that meant was between Rob Van Dam, Edge, Rey Mysterio Jr., and Monty Brown, 3 of these men would punch tickets into the Deadly Draw match and one would be wrestling for championship gold at one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year. Edge realized that based on alignment, he was greatly outnumbered, so he tried to show that he was buddy-buddy with Rey Mysterio Jr., hoping to pair with him to help his chances. This backfired on him as Mysterio, RVD, and Brown took turns bouncing Edge off the canvas. Things did not look good for the Rated R Superstar until he was able to narrowly get out of the way of Brown's Pounce, causing the Alpha Male to hit the Whole F'n Show instead. Edge kicked it into another level quickly, surprised Mysterio and tossed him to the floor. Mysterio is officially in Deadly Draw.

Edge was quite proud of himself that he took Mysterio out in the fashion that he did, as he pointed to his head to ensure that everyone knew how smart he was. He didn't look so smart though when a man dressed in all black and sporting a mask jumped the railing and nailed Edge from behind. Whoever this masked man was, he did not like Edge in the least as he completely unleashed on him with a flurry of right hands. Edge tried in vain to cover up but the masked man was relentless, dropping him with a huge piledriver. The masked man left back through the crowd, but the damage had been done as RVD had no trouble tossing Edge over the top. Either way, Edge is going to the Deadly Draw match based on his finish.

This left us with two, and what a final two it was as we had the man who nearly won the IC Title last night in Rob Van Dam and the man who is still the longest reigning Intercontinental (then North American) champion, Monty Brown. The crowd was on its feet as these two got their second winds and went at it, exchanging moves with neither man being able to get the clear advantage. Brown was almost down and out when RVD had him down in position for the Rolling Thunder, but Brown showed an insane amount of fortitude by being back up to his feet before RVD could even bounce off the ropes. When RVD came back, he was met with the Pounce! After that, the Alpha Male hit him with a huge kneelift that sent the Whole F'n Show to the floor, and this match was over.

Rating: *** 1/4

With that impressive win, Monty Brown will go on to Deadly Draw to face John Bradshaw Layfield for the Intercontinental Title. JBL did not look happy with this considering Brown held the IC Title for nearly a year. Brown is about as hot as any wrestler in GCW right now, so this could be the worst time for JBL to cross paths with the Alpha Male.

KURT ANGLE IS IN DEADLY DRAW, AND HE HAS A MESSAGE FOR BROCK LESNAR
Backstage World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar was getting ready to watch the main event which would determine who he would be facing at Deadly Draw when Kurt Angle came into the room. The two shook hands and exchanged some small talk before Angle let Lesnar know that he has entered himself into the Deadly Draw match. Lesnar wished him the best of luck. Angle told Lesnar that he was going to win that match because although the two are friends now, there is nothing more that Angle wants than the World Heavyweight title back around his waist, and if that meant beating Brock Lesnar, he would do so by any means necessary. Lesnar said that was fine by him, because he wants to keep the World Title by any means necessary.

Match #4
Match #4
MAIN EVENT
#1 Contenders Match
Chris Benoit vs. Booker T (w/ Sharmell)
Main event time, and this one had big implications as it would determine the main event at Deadly Draw as either Chris Benoit or Booker T would be going onto April 23rd's pay-per-view to challenge for the World Heavyweight Title. Benoit is completely focused on regaining what he used to possess while Booker is looking for the opportunity that he thinks he is being deprived of. These two have known each other for years, and actually had forged an alliance in the early days of GCW, but those days are long gone as was evident by the intensity of this match. Benoit is one of the best in the ring, but what he didn't have tonight that helped Booker T is someone in his corner. Sharmell did anything and everything she could think of to help her man out, even seducing referee Nick Patrick and laying a big kiss on him while Booker was trapped in the Crippler Crossface. The Crippler saw this and released the hold to tell Patrick to do his job, but this temporary distraction gave Booker time to hit a desperation low blow to slow the Rabid Wolverine to a crawl. One Axe Kick later and Booker T punched his ticket to Deadly Draw's World Heavyweight Title match.

Number-One-Contenders-Match:
Booker T pinned Chris Benoit with the Axe Kick in 0:10:28.
Rating: ***

As the show went off the air, Booker T and Sharmell celebrated their "clean" victory and their newfound #1 contendership. They're going to need a lot of the same at Deadly Draw if Booker wants to be the World champion.

Yet another long standing circuit. I'm glad you still have time to produce cards in between your comedy career. Is it me or is the Matt Hardy/Edge angle with Maria have shades of the brilliant Tommy Dreamer/Raven angle in ECW? Matt Hardy and Edge definitely could fit that angle I think. And Edge having a brothel is so Edge like. Good job with that.

Honestly, doing this kind of thing helps keep my writing sharp for comedy.  That's why I'm doing it again after the long hiatus.

The Edge/Hardy/Maria angle is going to be really great, I think.  Some good stuff coming.
