[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 3/13/06

Snabbit888Posted on 03/17/08 at 00:03:05

Six days away from Proving Ground, and there was still plenty to prove here tonight on Monday Night Explosion live from Baltimore, Maryland! On tonight's show, Kurt Angle had to wrestle an opponent of Randy Orton's choice a week ago. This week, Angle gets to select Orton's opponent! Also on the card, Christopher Daniels, the X champion, wrestles one of his 3 opponents at Proving Ground, AJ Styles, in a non-title match! And in our huge main event, a rare steel cage match on Explosion as Monty Brown will finally get his chance to get his hand on "The Rated R Superstar" Edge! What a way to go into the pay-per-view!

Match #1
Rob Van Dam/Abyss vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (Intercontinental champion)/Bobby Lashley (w/ Lamont)
This match kicked off our show and served as a preview of two matches at Proving Ground. Given the way that Abyss and Bobby Lashley have been trying to destroy each other for weeks, it was shocking to see they could manage to control themselves and sticking to the structure of this tag team match. RVD and JBL were both trying to establish some momentum going into their battle over the IC Title. JBL and Lashley were obviously able to work well together, but RVD and Abyss showed a surprisingly adept sense of teamwork. This surprising teamwork allowed RVD to surprise JBL with a flying cross body press and Abyss cut Lashley off allowing the Whole F'n Show to get the pin on the Intercontinental champion.

Rob Van Dam and Abyss defeated The Corporation (Bobby Lashley and John Bradshaw Layfield) when RVD pinned JBL after a flying cross body press in 0:07:05.
Rating: ***

A big win for RVD, but will he be able to make lightning strike twice this Sunday? And what is going to happen when Abyss and Lashley meet one more time, this time in a steel cage?

CM PUNK AND DAFFNEY HAVE WORDS FOR MONTY BROWN
Before we got to our next match, we had some words from CM Punk and Daffney, and as we've come to expect from these two, it was interesting to say the least. Punk said that he knew everyone was expecting him to do something crazy tonight, to try to attack Monty Brown in the cage match main event against Edge. But Punk said he follows his own path and prides himself on doing the unexpected. He assured everyone that GCW hasn't seen anything yet, and that at Proving Ground, there will be more surprises.

Match #2
Hardcore Holly (w/ Ken Doane) vs. Paul Burchill
Paul Burchill is playing his hand in singles wrestling these days, and he did quite well for himself in a losing effort against Kurt Angle a week ago. This week, he took on Hardcore Holly and once again looked fantastic against the veteran Alabama Slamma. Holly is a notorious hard-hitter though, and early in the match, he punished Burchill's chest with hard chops. Burchill is a hungry rookie though, and he showed that with some cheap tactics early to try to win this match. When he rolled Holly up early and put his feet on the ropes for leverage, Holly was able to kick out. However, Hardcore Bob was furious because this happened right in front of his partner Ken Doane, and the young Doane did absolutely nothing to intervene, instead pretending he had something in his eye. Holly made a mistake and turned his attention to Doane, berating him for not having his back. When Holly turned back around, he walked right into the devastating C4 of Burchill and this match was over.

Paul Burchill pinned Hardcore Holly with the C4 in 0:02:50.
Rating: ** ½

If this tag team wasn't strained enough as is, this incident is surely not going to help. Holly lectured Doane after the match all the way to the back, but Doane didn't seem too interested in listening.

KURT ANGLE SELECTS RANDY ORTON'S OPPONENT
Angle was taken to the limit last week by Orton's selection for an opponent. Angle wanted to put Orton through the same situation this week. Angle came out after Orton had been introduced, and said that at the very least, Orton was going to be sore after this contest. With that, Angle pulled out a handful of money which meant only one thing, GCW's hired gun RHYNO. Orton wwas not at all pleased with this selection because Rhyno is like a freight train, and this was not going to be a pleasant experience for the Legend Killer.

Match #3
On Commentary: Kurt Angle
Rhyno vs. Randy Orton
In a match with Rhyno, your only chance of winning is to somehow survive that initial offensive onslaught that the Manbeast will throw at you. Problem is, that's far easier said than done. Orton was doing everything in his power to stay away from Rhyno, but like was mentioned before, Rhyno is like a freight train, and if you can't get off the tracks, you're going to get ran over. And run over he was. Rhyno was in rare form tonight, using his array of power offense to punish the third generation superstar. Orton is a tenacious competitor, no matter how crappy of a person he might be, and he was able to ride that storm and use his technical skills to slow the War Machine down. Orton kept Rhyno off his feet by working over the legs with various submissions. This was a sound strategy against an opponent who was far stronger than him. But Orton is known for losing his cool, and when he couldn't put Rhyno away, he became more and more frustrated, which opened the door for Rhyno's last flourish. Rhyno hit various bodyslams and suplexes on Orton, but Orton pulled something out of his bag of tricks, dodged the Gore, and planted Rhyno with the RKO.

Randy Orton pinned Rhyno with the RKO in 0:08:06.
Rating: *** 1/4

Orton pulled out the win, but he had to work for it. Angle gave Orton a mock round of applause and told everyone that he's going to need all the luck he can get at Proving Ground.

Match #4
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Lance Storm (1/2 World Tag Team champions)
Though their styles contrast on paper, we were treated to an excellent match between Rey Mysterio Jr. and one-half of the World Tag Team champions, Lance Storm. This match wasn't marred by any sort of controversy or outside interference - it was merely a great wrestling match between two fantastic competitors. Mysterio is one of the best fliers in the history of the business, and he let it all loose tonight, primarily to be able to show Booker T and the world that any injuries he may have had are not going to be a factor this Sunday. A lot of people accuse Lance Storm of being boring, and sure, he may not be bubbling over with personality. But when you look at the credentials of the former two-time Intercontinental and World Tag Team champion, you can see he can go in the ring, and Mysterio got to experience that firsthand tonight.

This match started out a bit slow for the fans' liking, but by the end, the fans were on their feet applauding this great contest. No matter what each man did, the other seemed to have the perfect counter. From the opening bell, it was impossible to get a gauge on who might win this match, it was that even. This match could have literally gone on all night had it not been for one exceptional counter by Mysterio. Storm had him perched on his shoulders in a fireman's carry, but Mysterio spun around out of it and caught Storm by surprise with a crucifix and was just barely able to hold the proud Canadian down for the 3.

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Lance Storm after a crucifix in 0:10:43.
Rating: *** ¾

After the match, both men received a rousing round of applause for their efforts. Storm was disappointed with the loss (we think - with him, it's hard to tell), but he surprised us all by giving Mysterio a nod of respect.

MNM WISHES WGTT THE BEST OF LUCK
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin were backstage discussing their chance to become World Tag Team champions for the fifth time, when JOHNNY NITRO and SHANNON MOORE, along with MELINA came in and interrupted. MNM was overflowing with faux sincerity when they wished the World's Greatest Tag Team the best of luck as they challenge for the tag titles at Proving Ground. Haas & Benjamin thanked them, when MNM said they had better be the first to get a title shot if they are to win the titles. Benjamin smiled at them and said, "Sure... as long as you earn it," which struck a cord with MNM, who left in a huff.

Match #5
Non-Title Match
Christopher Daniels (X champion) vs. AJ Styles
Last week, Kid Kash and Elix Skipper locked horns, so this week, the other two men in the X Title Fatal Fourway locked up in the form of AJ Styles and current champion Christopher Daniels. This match was a perfect example of how competitive the X division is and on any given night, anyone can beat anyone else. Daniels is going on four months as the champion, but at Proving Ground, he faces his toughest challenge having to defend against three opponents. It's going to be even tougher for him now as he doesn't have the momentum, as in this tough match, Styles got the better of him when he reversed a rana into the Styles Clash. If that happens this Sunday, we're going to see ourselves a brand new X champion.

AJ Styles pinned Christopher Daniels with the Styles Clash in 0:09:06.
Rating: ****

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
Cage Match
Monty Brown vs. Edge (w/ Mickie James/Lita/Gail Kim)
Our wrestling main event was a rare TV cage match, and something that "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown had been looking forward to for quite awhile as he got "The Rated R Superstar" Edge alone in the ring, with no way for him to get out and no way for anyone else to get in. Edge wasn't all that thrilled with this, especially considering that in 6 days, he and Lance Storm defend the World Tag Team Titles against the team that is considered the best to date in GCW history, the World's Greatest Tag Team.

Edge couldn't stay away from Brown anymore than he did. Edge's strategy was to hit Brown and run away as fast as he could, which being the cowardly sneaky guy that he is, he did well. Problem was, when you're trapped in a cage with a wild animal, eventually the animal is going to catch you, and when Brown caught Edge, the pain was brought. Edge ate the mat and ate the steel more times than he would have liked for sure, and by the end of this contest, he was wearing a crimson mask. After Brown had hit the Pounce on Edge, he slowly was making his way to get out of the cage. As he got to the door, Edge's Brothel slammed the door right in his face and tried their best to hold it shut. Brown couldn't believe what he was seeing and actually started laughing before he kicked the door open, sending Edge's Brothel scattering all across the floor. This distraction gave Edge enough time to hit Brown with a low blow and take the Alpha Male down with the Spear.

Edge was still in a lot of pain though and couldn't capitalize with the cover right away which allowed Brown to kick out. That was Edge's last chance to get this match as a win for himself, as right after that he tried the Spear again. But this time, Brown got out of the way and Edge's skull crashed directly into the cage. After that, it was academic as Brown walked out the door and his revenge was gotten against Edge.

No-Countout-No-DQ-Cage Match:
Monty Brown defeated Edge by escaping the cage in 0:11:03.
Rating: ****

AN INTERVIEW ABOUT RESPECT ENDS IN A FIGHT
We closed the show with what was supposed to be an interview with World champion Brock Lesnar and number-one contender Chris Benoit where they'd bury the hatchet and agree to have a good clean match at Proving Ground. Problem was with as proud as these two athletes are, they weren't able to keep their composure. It started out as playful ribbing about who would win the match this Sunday, but degenerated into a sling of insults which in turn degenerated into another fight. The show went off the air with the GCW Official Brigade trying to separate these two.

Love the shows & its great to see GCW back again... but.. I do have one thing about the main event tonight. Being from Maryland (and working with Maryland Championship Wrestling), I know that the State Athletic Commission has a very strict "no blood" policy & they would have stopped the cage match when Edge was bloodied by "The Alpha Male".

Yes I know, "It's fantasy" but I couldn't help but add my 2 cents. :)

Ha ha.  Don't be a dick, Justin.  I also once pushed Eric Angle as a good wrestler, so don't get all into the details now. :)
