[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 2/27/06

Snabbit888Posted on 02/10/08 at 23:54:54

The stage is setting nicely for Proving Ground on March 19th, with the next stop on that road being tonight in Savannah, Georgia for Monday Night Explosion! On the card, a huge main event as World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar teams up with "The Crippler" Chris Benoit to take on World Tag Team champions, Edge & Lance Storm! Plus, more matches have been signed for Proving Ground and will be announced right here tonight!

TOMMY DREAMER KICKS OFF THE SHOW WITH SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioner Tommy Dreamer kicked off the show with a big announcement, the announcing of the main event for Proving Ground. Due to the way the match between them ended last week, Dreamer decreed that World Heavyweight champion BROCK LESNAR will once again defend his title against CHRIS BENOIT in hopes that there will be a decisive winner this time. He also said that Lesnar and Benoit would have to team up tonight to take on the World Tag Team champions, Lance Storm and Edge. This brought out the champions, along with Edge's brothel. Edge didn't seem that upset to have to be defending the titles, as long as Dreamer could promise that Monty Brown was not going to be there, seeing how the Alpha Male has every intention of ripping Edge's head off. Dreamer told Edge not to worry as Brown was not in the building tonight. Edge was relieved, until he made the realization that he and Storm would be wrestling LESNAR and BENOIT. Lance Storm, as expected, showed no emotion.

Match #1
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. The Blue Meanie (w/ Stevie Richards)
Rey Mysterio Jr. returned last week after a few weeks off due to injuries at the hands of Booker T. What Mysterio wanted was to get his hands on Booker, but tonight, he had to settle for The Blue Meanie. Even with Stevie Richards haplessly offering his health, Mysterio wasn't about to lose this match, putting the Meanie away with the West Coast Pop.

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned The Blue Meanie with the West Coast Pop in 0:03:30.
Rating: *** 1/4

BOOKER T CHALLENGES MYSTERIO FOR PROVING GROUND
After the match, BOOKER T and SHARMELL came out, and Booker was in a foul mood. Booker had a microphone in hand and made a challenge for Proving Ground. Booker said that he carried the team for months, and at Proving Ground, he was going to put Mysterio on the shelf for good.

Match #2
Ken Doane/Hardcore Holly vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
MNM wants a tag title shot, and they seemed poised to get it at all costs, tonight taking on Hardcore Holly and Ken Doane. Hardcore did his best to keep his team competitive, and as one of the hardest hitters in GCW, he certainly made Johnny Nitro & Shannon Moore feel his presence. However, Doane's heart is simply not into it right now. The young prodigy feels like he is being held back by having to wrestle tag matches, and instead of learning from what Hardcore can teach him, he's pouting. That resulted in yet another loss for this team.

MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when S. Moore pinned H. Holly after a flying forearm in 0:07:37.
Rating: *** ¾

Match #3
Christopher Daniels (X champion)/AJ Styles/Rhyno vs. Elix Skipper/Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
The four men who will compete for the X Title at Proving Ground were involved in a tag match tonight with a bit of a twist - each team had a powerhouse flanking them. Rhyno was with X champion Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles, while Kid Kash's bodyguard Lance Hoyt joined he and Elix Skipper. As we've come to expect from the X division, the action was fast and furious. But unfortunately for Kid Kash, it wasn't fast enough to avoid him from being cut in half by Rhyno's Gore, putting this match on ice, and putting a sour taste in the Notorious One's mouth as we get closer to Proving Ground. Skipper wasn't too happy with his partner either, looking at him with disgust as he left.

Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles and Rhyno defeated Kid Kash, Lance Hoyt and Elix Skipper when Rhyno pinned Kash with the Gore in 0:11:14.

Match #4
D-Ray 3000 vs. Randy Orton
Randy Orton isn't short on confidence and bravado, as shown by the way he cost Kurt Angle the Intercontinental Title last week. Orton himself was in competition this week, and didn't have much trouble in dispatching of D-Ray 3000, planting him with the RKO.

Randy Orton pinned D-Ray 3000 with the RKO in 0:02:18.
Rating: ** ½

KURT ANGLE WANTS A PIECE OF ORTON
It didn't take long after the match for KURT ANGLE himself to come out with microphone in hand. Surprisingly, considering how Randy Orton cost him his chance at regaining the IC Title, Angle was quite calm. Angle said he had a good mind to come down to the ring right now and snap Orton's ankle, but he's going to make him wait, citing that the anticipation will make it that much worse. As Angle continued to taunt Orton, the third-generation star became agitated, demanding that Angle come to the ring right now. Angle teased coming to the ring, but smiled and turned away, opting to make Orton wait.

Match #5
Frankie Kazarian (w/ Harry Smith) vs. Bobby Lashley (w/ John Bradshaw Layfield & Lamont)
Bobby Lashley has yet to even be close to having his shoulders pinned to the mat, and that trend would continue this week against Frankie "The Future" Kazarian. Lashley needed just over a minute to put Kazarian away, which is impressive because the Future is no slouch by any means. After the match, Lashley's assault continued on Kazarian. His partner, Harry Smith, tried to come in and save, but Intercontinental champion John Bradshaw Layfield jumped in the ring and cut him off with the Stock Market Crash.

Bobby Lashley pinned Frankie Kazarian with the Dominator in 0:01:05.

JBL IS ALREADY CLAIMING TO BE THE GREATEST INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION OF ALL-TIME
JBL, proud of himself that he and his henchman just took care of Smith and Kazarian (or as JBL put it, "I single-handedly did it!"), JBL grabbed the mic and in a very near-sighted statement, already declared himself the greatest Intercontinental champion of all-time. An odd statement as he's only been champion for 8 days. JBL said that it was impossible that he would ever be defeated, and the only way the IC Title would ever not be held by the Wrestling God was when he finally retired. This prompted ROB VAN DAM to come out and in his normal chill way said he'd like to be the next to try to take that IC Title. JBL laughed it off, saying that if RVD wasn't to actually remember the match, he could have his shot at Proving Ground.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
World Tag Team Title Match
Lance Storm/Edge © (w/ Gail Kim/Lita/Mickie James) vs. Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Chris Benoit
It was going to be interesting to see how World champion Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit were going to co-exist with the World Tag Team Titles up for grabs here, considering they would be meeting one more time for the richest prize in the game at Proving Ground. Fact remains that both men are fierce competitors though who want to win, and they were looking to take the tag titles from Edge and Lance Storm. This was a great match with four of the top athletes in Global Championship Wrestling locking horns, but it seemed like an explosion between Lesnar and Benoit was lying just under the surface throughout this entire match. This bubbled over at the end of this great main event when a miscommunication led to Benoit going for a clothesline on Edge, but the Rated R Superstar ducked and Benoit connected with Lesnar on the apron. Lesnar and Benoit began arguing, and this momentary loss in focus allowed Edge to get a rolling reverse cradle on Benoit, and with a pull of the tights, Edge and Lance Storm were still the World Tag Team champions.

Edge and Lance Storm defeated Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit when Edge pinned Benoit after a rolling reverse cradle in 0:19:04.
Rating: **** ½
(Edge and Lance Storm retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

The bickering between Lesnar and Benoit continued and almost came to blows, but that tension was cut when MONTY BROWN came out of nowhere and threw Edge into the ring steps! Brown was like an unleashed animal, beating on Edge with hard right hands. Lance Storm tried to interject, but he was quickly thrown away as Brown continued the assault on Edge. The attack was so intense that even Lesnar and Benoit just stood back and watched as this went on. It didn't look like anything would be able to slow down the Alpha Male until CM PUNK blasted him in the back of the head with a steel chair! The hit made a sickening thud, and just like that, Brown was out. But why on Earth did Punk attack Brown?

Nice card.

Here's hoping that someone pulls out a .45 and puts one in the back of JBL's head.

Agree with Jeep, JBL is a monster pain in the ass!  Can't wait to see him brought down but then, isn't that what a good heel does to people?

Lesnar/Benoit should be a classic.

Keep up the good work.

My distain for the guy goes way beyond the face/heel designation. He, along with a few others in the business, needs to be taken out back and beaten to death.
