[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 2/20/06

Snabbit888Posted on 01/31/08 at 06:18:33

One day removed from Beat Your Valentine, GCW was in Miami, Florida for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, we would have the fallout from last night. Brock Lesnar is still the World Heavyweight champion, but there are many who are vying for that championship. Also, John Bradshaw Layfield is the new Intercontinental champion. Who will emerge as his first challenger? All that and more on Explosion!

BROCK LESNAR'S STILL THE CHAMP - WHO WILL STEP UP TO CHALLENGE HIM NEXT
Our show kicked off with the 8-month reigning World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar coming down to the ring for an interview. Lesnar was looking very confident, saying that last night despite the odds stacked against him, he was able to beat the best that Canada had to offer, referring to how he got past Lance Storm and Edge 24 hours prior. This apparently upset one CHRIS BENOIT, who came out and told Lesnar that he may have gotten past Storm and Edge, but he didn't beat the BEST technical wrestler in the world today, the Rabid Wolverine. Lesnar told Benoit that he's beat him before, to which Benoit reminded Lesnar that he's beat him as well. Lesnar didn't like being shown up, reminding Benoit that he couldn't even beat his protégé last night. Benoit got in Lesnar's face to fight, but they were interrupted by LANCE STORM and EDGE, the World Tag Team champions. Storm had to be serious for a minute, saying that Benoit can come out here and blabber all he wants, but that it should be Lance Storm getting a rematch for the World Title before anyone else gets a shot. The hits kept coming, as this brought out Commissioner TOMMY DREAMER. Dreamer made it abundantly clear that Lance Storm would not be getting another crack at the World Title, especially after how biased of a referee Edge was, despite Dreamer's warnings not to be so. Dreamer went on to say that originally he was going to come out here and strip Storm and Edge of the World Tag Team Titles, but he thought a more fitting punishment would be to make them defend them against the 4-time former champions, the World's Greatest Tag Team. Storm & Edge were livid, as not only would Storm not be getting another title shot, but they'd have to face the team they double-crossed a couple of weeks ago. To make matters worse, Dreamer ended the segment by giving Benoit a World Title shot tonight in the main event, and signing Edge vs. MONTY BROWN for tonight as well.

Match #1
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels (X champion)/"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. "Prime Time" Elix Skipper/Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
A night ago, Christopher Daniels successfully defended the X Title against Elix Skipper in a classic match while Kid Kash cheated his way past AJ Styles. Tonight, these four men were involved in tag team action pitting Daniels and Styles against Skipper and Kash. Much like all of the matches within the X division have been, this one was fast-paced and showed how unique and innovative these performers are. Too much action to call, but after Daniels dove onto Skipper on the outside with an Asai moonsault, it left Styles to hit Kash with a tremendously high impact Blue Thunder Bomb, which would be enough to keep the Notorious One's shoulders on the mat for the 3.

Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles defeated Elix Skipper and Kid Kash when Styles pinned Kash after a Blue Thunder Bomb in 0:06:49.
Rating: ****

Because of this match, and recent events, the GCW Championship Committee has decided that at Proving Ground on March 19th from East Rutherford, New Jersey, Christopher Daniels will defend against Elix Skipper, AJ Styles, and Kid Kash in an elimination four corners match.

Match #2
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
It's been a rough couple of days for Edge. Not only did his refereeing last night fail to get Lance Storm the World Heavyweight Title, but now because of his actions, he had to face a man who would love nothing more than to rip him in half, Monty Brown. Edge was on the ropes for most of this match, trying to keep his distance from the enraged animal of the Serengeti. Brown was simply toying with Edge, and Edge's Brothel did not like seeing this as Lita snuck Edge his World Tag Team Title, which obviously led to a disqualification. Brown was dazed and a small trickle of blood came from his forehead, but he was more enraged than anything, promptly Edge and his brothel to head for higher ground. You'd think this guy would learn by now.

Monty Brown defeated Edge by disqualification in 0:03:17.
Rating: ** 1/4

KURT ANGLE AND RANDY ORTON BOTH WANT JBL TONIGHT
We cut back to the office of Tommy Dreamer, where we are in the middle of an argument between Kurt Angle and Randy Orton about who should get the first shot at John Bradshaw Layfield and the Intercontinental Title. Dreamer sat quietly as the two bickered before he finally exploded and told them both to shut up. Dreamer said that since Angle is the former champion and that it was Orton who was pinned last night, so Kurt Angle would get the title shot tonight.

Match #3
"Bulldog" Harry Smith vs. Bobby Lashley
For Harry Smith's sake, at least this one was mercifully short. Smith picked up a huge win last night, pinning former World champion Chris Benoit with a rollup, and wanted to keep some momentum going. Unfortunately, he had to meet Bobby Lashley, who has been all but indestructible since coming to GCW as JBL's enforcer. Smith got a little offense in early as he jumped the gun to start the match, but Lashley quickly bowled through him and got an easy victory with the Dominator.

Bobby Lashley pinned Harry Smith with the Dominator in 0:01:50.
Rating: *

Lashley continued the assault, hitting a second Dominator. FRANKIE KAZARIAN ran down to try to help his partner, but he was cut down with a huge spear. Lashley was having his way with Smith and Kazarian until ABYSS ran out and yet again, the fight was on! As has been a theme the past several weeks, these two tore into each other like wild animals, and the GCW Official Brigade had a hell of time keeping these two apart. This one obviously isn't over yet, and Tommy Dreamer is going to need to think of a way to end this once and for all before someone gets seriously hurt.

Match #4
Intercontinental Title Match
John Bradshaw Layfield © (w/ Lamont & Bobby Lashley) vs. Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle lost the Intercontinental Title a night ago without even getting pinned, so in his eyes, he still has a legit claim to the championship. That dispute would be settled after this one, and much like the Triple Threat match a night ago, this was a great match. JBL's goal was to stay on his feet and hammer Angle to the ground, while Angle obviously wanted to get the much stronger "Wrestling God" on the mat. Both wrestlers got a liberal amount of their strategy in. Angle had the advantage late though when he got JBL down and in the Ankle Lock, which is when BOBBY LASHLEY jumped on the apron to get involved. Predictably, he was cut off at the pass by the referee, and also predictably, RANDY ORTON ran down and as quick as a hiccup dropped Angle with the R.K.O.! For good measure, JBL hit the Stock Market Crash as well to earn the elementary victory.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Kurt Angle with the Stock Market Crash in 0:16:25.
Rating: **** 1/4
(John Bradshaw Layfield retained the GCW Intercontinental Title.)

After the contest, Orton stood at the top of the ramp and smirked at the wounded Angle, whose eyes were filled with pure hate and rage. Orton may feel vindicated tonight, but he may end up regretting this decision.

BOOKER T'S BRAGADOCIOUSNESS GETS THE BETTER OF HIM
Booker T came out with his wife, the lovely (but evil) Sharmell for an interview, and after beating Rhyno at Beat Your Valentine, he was as cocky as ever. This interview really didn't seem to have a point that we could gather, other than Booker wanted to make sure that everyone was very clear how great he was for beating Rhyno last night. Everyone was very thankful to see REY MYSTERIO JR. back after Booker attacked him a few weeks ago, nailing Booker with a springboard dropkick, putting Booker in perfect position for the 619 which quickly followed. Booker rolled out of the ring before any more harm could be done, but Mysterio is back and it is obvious that he has not forgotten what his former partner did to him.

Match #5
The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
MNM feels like they still are due a title shot, but Commissioner Dreamer has made it clear that they will have to earn it again. They were hoping to do just that with a victory tonight over the current number-one contenders, the World's Greatest Tag Team. A win would definitely catapult them back into contention. The only problem with that is that Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas are 4-time champions, and beating them is much easier said than done. MNM has a bright future in GCW, but unfortunately for them, their present involved a loss to the WGTT. It looks like that title shot is going to have to wait.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) when C. Haas made Nitro submit to the Haas Of Pain in 0:08:06.
Rating: *** ¾

CM PUNK HAS SOME CRYPTIC WORDS
CM Punk may have been on the losing end against Rob Van Dam at the pay-per-view, but he had plenty to say tonight regardless. He admitted that RVD got the best of him, but that CM Punk's got plenty more victims lined up. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong with this guy, but clearly he has an agenda. If only the rest of us knew what it was.

Match #6
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar © vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit
Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit are not strangers by any means, having many classic battles back in 2004. Benoit is the first ever GCW World champion, and would love nothing more than to regain that title here tonight. But as Lesnar's reign extends further, he is seemingly becoming more dominant. These two have had great matches in the past, but this one had a very different feel to it. It started out as you'd expect - trading off of wrestling moves, both men getting the advantage. But tempers began to flare as you'd expect between two proud athletes, and this became simply a fight. A bit of a sloppy fight, but a good fight never the less. These two obviously were looking to see who was the better man, but they would not get that opportunity tonight as LANCE STORM & EDGE had other ideas. Storm was still fuming (well, you couldn't tell that by his face, but trust me - he was pissed) that Dreamer said he wouldn't be getting a rematch, so the World Tag Team champions dug themselves deeper on Tommy Dreamer's list by ruining this main event, attacking both champion and challenger.

Chris Benoit and Brock Lesnar battled to a no contest in 0:17:31.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Despite the element of surprise, the World Tag Team champions had the tables turned on them as Lesnar and Benoit fought back, clearing the ring and standing tall. After a brief stare down, Lesnar and Benoit exchanged a brief handshake as we went off the air. Updated Card for Proving Ground, March 19, 2006, from East Rutherford, NJ:

World Tag Team Title Match - Lance Storm/Edge © vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team

X Title Match - Christopher Daniels © vs. AJ Styles vs. Kid Kash vs. Elix Skipper

Nice card.

Well written with lots of stuff to make me want to see the next one.

I like Edge's harem and despise JBL.

Good stuff. Keep up the good work.

I really like this circuit and it's direction. It seems very "competition" based but still has good storylines.

You have to love that roster too.

Very nice card, Ryan and good to see GCW is back!
