WrestleMania 1 - "The Night of Champions"
April 1, 2007
Ford Field
Detroit, Michigan

The event begins with a message from Vince McMahon, who is backstage at Ford Field. McMahon tells the sold out crowd that things in the WWE are going to be shaken up within the next 24 hours. He says that tonight is the beginning of a new season for World Wrestling Entertainment, and that as of Midnight all wrestlers' contracts will be null and void, making everyone on the roster a so-called, free agent. Vince says that this includes everyone, even newly crowned champions - if there are any. He says that the new changes will be seen in the week following tonight, starting on RAW tomorrow night from Dayton, OH. He then discusses the events that took place Friday night on Smackdown, involving the final "Golden Opportunity" Qualifier. Vince says that since the match was called a double-disqualification, he has no other choice but to make the match a five-man battle royal, instead of six. He tells the crowd that tonight is going to be a special night for him and WWE, and he thanks the crowd for coming.

(1) © Victoria vs. Lita (WWE Women's Title Match)

Lita came into this match, hoping to get a piece of Victoria after the Women's Champion's attack last week on RAW. For the beginning of the match, Lita looked like she was in control until a nasty clothesline took her down. Victoria then locked on a side headlock that looked to be doing some damage to Lita's neck. Victoria then hit a sidewalk slam for the surprise victory. After the match, WWE officials rush down to the ring to tend to Lita, who is seen holding the back of her neck in pain.

WWE Women's Title Match:
Victoria pinned Lita after a sidewalk slam in 3:46.
Rating: ** ¾
(Victoria retained the WWE Women's Title.)

Backstage, Charlie Haas tells Maria that tonight is unlike any other night he's had in his career. He says that tonight is his chance to show that, even though he and Shelton Benjamin aren't challenging for the World Tag Team Titles, he still has what it takes to be a threat to any champion in the WWE.

(2) Psicosis vs. © Scotty 2 Hotty (WWE Cruiserweight Title Match)

Psicosis was trying to do what no one has been able to do since Scotty 2 Hotty won the Cruiserweight Title in January... and that is, defeat the champion. The match started off in his favor, and eventually went to the outside. However, it was obvious to the crowd in Detroit that Psicosis possibly forget the rules of a title match as he won the match by countout, but did not walk away with the Cruiserweight Title. As the bell rang, and the verdict was announced, Psicosis dropped to his knees in shame as he realized he still wasn't a champion.

Cruiserweight Title Match:
Psicosis defeated Scotty 2 Hotty by countout in 5:20.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Scotty 2 Hotty retained the Cruiserweight Title.)

Backstage, Kenny and Mikey of the Spirit Squad tell Todd Grisham that Cryme Tyme doesn't scare them. Their comments from Monday, about stealing the World Tag Team Title and whatever else they want, was nothing but talk from two men who underestimate the ability and spirit of the champions. Kenny says that tonight, the Spirit Squad is going to prove - once again - that they are the best tag team on RAW.

Also backstage, Jerry "The King" Lawler is asked by Maria about Edge's claim that "the King" was involved in the attack on Lita, Monday night on RAW. Lawler says that his only involvement with anything regarding Lita is that he got into Edge's face and promised to leave Detroit as the Intercontinental Champion. He says that whatever happened as he turned away, he had no idea was going to take place. However, he says that, knowing that Lita is injured and that Edge must be thinking about her well-being, eases his mind going into this match.

(3) © Kenny & Mikey (Spirit Squad) vs. Cryme Tyme (World Tag Team Title Match)

Cryme Tyme were the bigger and stronger team in this match tonight, and they showed it... taking the match to the outside of the ring at will. This match was a rematch of the tournament finale held in February, and Shad and JTG were not going to let the titles slip by them again. The champs tried to get some offense in late, but nothing was worth it as Cryme Tyme walked away with the win as new World Tag Team Champions.

World Tag Team Title Match:
Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard & JTG) defeated the Spirit Squad (Kenny & Mikey) when S. Gaspard pinned Mikey with the Spinebuster Slam in 15:45.
Rating: **
(Cryme Tyme won the World Tag Team Titles.)

In the back, Booker T tells Kristal Marshall that he has been getting ready for the Golden Opportunity match all weekend long, because it's his one chance to prove that he is the only person worthy enough to get a guaranteed title match. He says that, after finding out what Vince's plans are after the show, he has to work do whatever is necessary to make sure he gets that title contract. This brings in The Big Show, who says that this match is battle royal, and asks Booker what the main ejective is for that type of match. Booker informs Show that the battle royal is going to be pinfall and submission as well. Show says that none of that information matters, because he is head and shoulders about his opponents... and the clear choice to win this match.

(4) Tantaka vs. © William Regal (United States Title Match)

The crowd was stunned to find out that Tatanka was not going to be in action, due to an unseen altercation backstage. Surprising the crowd even more, was the announcement that Batista would be taking his place! "The Animal" came out to the ring still showing a few signs of his concussion from last week against The Undertaker. The United States Champion took full advantage of the injury, forcing Batista to submit, to win the match.

United States Title Match:
William Regal made Batista submit to the Regal Stretch in 17:28.
Rating: ** ¾
(William Regal retained the United States Title.)

Backstage, from his office inside Ford Field, Vince McMahon says that he has come to a decision for tonight's ECW World Title match. He says that, in keeping with his plan of making sure Al Snow doesn't win the title, he has made the match a Handcuff Match. Sarcastically, McMahon asks Snow if he's ready and laughing.

(5) "Golden Opportunity" 5-Man Battle Royal

This match lived up to it's name as the five participants gave everything they had for a chance at a guaranteed title shot anytime within the next six months! Balls Mahoney and The Big Show (both of ECW) started off, with Show attack Mahoney before the bell! As retribution, Francine tripped The Big Show, hoping to give Mahoney a slight advantage. However, things didn't work out for him early on. Charlie Haas entered at the 1:30 mark and attacked Balls from behind, focusing on the weaker of the two opponents, already in the match. King Booker entered at 3:00 and found a quick friendship with Haas, as they teamed up to eliminate both Show and Mahoney before Haas snuck in a kick, keeping up the pace of the match. ECW's last hope - Tony Mamaluke - entered at the 4:30 mark, bringing along Big Guido. On two separate occasions, Big Guido distracted referee Jimmy Korderas as Booker tried to pinned Mamaluke, keeping his friend in the battle royal. Though, after seeing enough of Mamaluke's assault, Guido took matters into his own hands, entering the ring and taking a swing at Charlie Haas with a chair! However, the quicker Haas ducked the shot and Guido connected with Mamaluke, virtually costing him the match. Haas was quick to dispose of the shocked big man, and Mamaluke wasn't far behind after tapping to the "Haas of Pain". For the final two minutes of the match, Charlie Haas and King Booker put on a clinic for the fans in Detroit, fighting until one of them couldn't go any longer. Haas was able to throw Booker over the ropes, but the "King of Smackdown" was able to keep his grip and hold himself up. However, Haas saw it and connected with a sickening double-knee to the back, causing Booker to fall to the canvas... giving Charlie Haas the victory!

"Golden Opportunity" 5-Man Battle Royal:
Charlie Haas won the 5-Man Battle Royal:
X Show & B. Mahoney started out.
X Charlie Haas entered at 1:30.
X King Booker entered at 3:00.
X C. Haas threw out Show in 3:12.
X C. Haas threw out B. Mahoney after a legsweep in 3:58.
X Tony Mamaluke entered at 4:30.

X C. Haas threw out Booker after a kneelift in 14:01.
Rating: *** 1/4
[Francine interfered against The Big Show.]
[Big Guido interfered against King Booker.]

Backstage, Al Snow is asked by Rebecca DiPierto about his actions Friday night on Smackdown. Snow says that a lot of people have been asking him that since then, and that he only has one response: he was trying to make sure that Little Guido found his way into the "Golden Opportunity" match. He says that his intentions were good, but the disqualification was never called. Snow tells Rebecca that reason is the only one he has, and that's the only one he's going to mention. He then says that he's not going to worry about it anymore, because he has a "Handcuff Match" against Matt Striker for the ECW World Title later tonight.

(6) © Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Edge (w/Lita) (Intercontinental Title Match)

For the past few weeks, Lawler and Edge have been at each other's throats, with Edge claiming that the Intercontinental Champion was behind Victoria's attack on Lita two weeks ago. However, coming into this match - with payback on his mind - Edge was unable to capitalize. With an ill-timed attempt at a high-risk move to the outside of the ring, "The Rated 'R' Superstar" cost himself the IC Title.

Intercontinental Title Match:
Jerry Lawler defeated Edge by countout in 4:56.
Rating: ** ¾
(Jerry Lawler retained the Intercontinental Title.)

A hype video is played on the Titantron, showcasing the events that have left up to tonight's "Handcuff Match" for the ECW World Title. Shown are scenes from Al Snow's match with Rex Butler; countless attacks by Matt Striker and Butler; the four-corners match that crowned Little Guido as the new Number One Contender; and finally, the Steel Cage match between Snow and Guido from "ECW on Sci Fi".

(7) The Great Khali (w/Daivari) vs. © The Undertaker (World Heavyweight Title Match)

Everyone knew that this match wasn't going to be pretty; it wasn't going to be a classic. However, it is a match that will go down in history! Both men hit their opponent with devastating maneuvers, one right after the other. The Great Khali hit two powerbombs on "The Deadman" but wasn't able to put him away. The Undertaker connected with two separate powerslams, but was unable to pin his opponent. The end of the match saw The Great Khali connect with his second Giant Choke Slam of the night, securing himself as the NEW World Heavyweight Champion!

World Heavyweight Title Match:
The Great Khali pinned The Undertaker with the Giant Choke Slam in 13:28.
Rating: 3/4*
(The Great Khali won the World Heavyweight Title.)

In the back, Randy Orton tells Maria that tonight, the lights will shine down on the ring that's sitting on the 50-yard line of Ford Field... but he knows of something that will sign even brighter: that of the Superstar that is Randy Orton. He says he's so confident right now, that he guarantees a victory over Umaga in tonight's main event. He says that, tomorrow night on RAW... a new reign will begin.

Also in the back, Todd Grisham is with Charlie Haas, who is celebrating his "Golden Opportunity" win from earlier tonight. When asked about what he's going to do with his contract, Haas says that he's going to wait until he sees about his contract that will be renegotiated later in the evening. He says, however, that he really has six months to decide what he's going to do with his newly won contract.

( 8 ) © Matt Striker vs. Al Snow (Handcuff Match - ECW World Title)

Al Snow had worked so hard since winning the Royal Rumble, in January to make sure he kept his Number One Contender's spot. Unfortunately, for him, that hard work was unable to pay off as the resident "Genius" of ECW proved it once again by taking Snow out early and keeping the advantage throughout the match for an easy title defense.

Handcuff Match: ECW World Title Match:
Matt Striker pinned Al Snow with the Golden Rule in 8:47.
Rating: ***
(Matt Striker retained the ECW World Title.)

A one-minute spot advertisement runs next informing the fans that WWE Backlash will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on April 29th.

(9) © Umaga (w/Armando Estrada) vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship Match)

From the very beginning it looked like Randy Orton was going to have his hands full tonight. Taking on "The Samoan Bulldozer" is a big enough task, but the odds were stacked against "The Legend Killer" with Armando Alejandro Estrada at ringside. Early in the match, Estrada make himself known, attacking Orton from beside, outside the ring. This gave the WWE Champion an ample chance to gain the advantage. However, Orton managed to find a source of energy and fight the champ toe-to-toe. He even found enough strength to powerslam the champ after hitting the RKO and the pin was stopped as Estrada placed Umaga's foot on the ropes. However, after the powerslam, a worn-out Orton fell on top of the champ and picked up a huge victory!

WWE Championship Match:
Randy Orton pinned Umaga after a powerslam in 15:45.

nice card and good write up. i like all the champions, except for khali. but if his contract is up now, maybe he will not keep the title? happy to see guys like jerry lawler and william regal working for titles. i always thought charlie haas was under rated. glad to see he got a huge win. i'm hoping al snow gets the title eventually....
wicked_rexPosted on 05/20/07 at 16:07:57

Thank you both for the replies. Contracts have been handed out, and you can be sure that there are going to be some huge surprises in all three brands.

Hope you guys can check it out.

I am going to be honest, I haven't got a chance to read the whole card yet, but what I have read, I love.  I will get back to it in a few hours after work.  I just needed to make a comment on the picture you have of Detroit/Ford Field...Holy shit, how fake is that!!  Having lived about a mile from the stadium for a while, I can tell you Detroit looks absolutely nothing like that picture...but, on further examination of the picture, it looks like it may be a drawing...possibly a rendering before it was built?  I dunno, anyway, I apologize for going completely off-topic on you.  I will respond with more once I get back from work.  I am excited to finish reading.  Later.

Well, thanks for the comment. But, yes, the picture is just a drawing. The photos I had looked at were too big and I didn't want to take up a lot of space while posting. I grew up in Flint, so yeah... that looks nothing like Detroit (except in a perfect world lol). I'm glad you've enjoyed the first part of the show. Hopefully, the second half will be just as enjoyable.
