[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 1/9/06

Snabbit888Posted on 11/28/06 at 09:15:13

THE SHOW KICKS OFF WITH A HUGE BRAWL
Joey Styles and Paul Heyman didn't even get to welcome us to Monday Night Explosion before the action started as we were sent out to the parking lot midway through a huge brawl! The two teams that will be War Games at Winter Warfare were not wasting any time getting at each other, all ten men tearing away. The GCW Official Brigade and a host of security guards pulled the two factions apart, but the man most instrumental in ending this fight was Commissioner Tommy Dreamer. He said that if Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Abyss, and Rhyno & the Corporation wanted to go at it so badly, they'd get a chance as tonight Lesnar & Angle will defend the World Tag Team Titles against Randy Orton and Bobby Lashley, and that Rhyno vs. John Bradshaw Layfield in our main event will now be a Lumberjack match involving the other 8 men involved in War Games!

What a way to kick off Monday Night Explosion from the Carver Arena in Peoria, Illinois! Winter Warfare is 13 days away, and what happens tonight is sure to have a profound effect on this pay-per-view extravaganza! In addition to the two previously announced matches, Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 meet Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt, Monty Brown takes on Edge, Rob Van Dam and Elix Skipper go one-on-one, and more matches will be signed for Winter Warfare!

Match #1
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. The Blue Meanie (w/ Stevie Richards)
Due to the Blue World Order's "take over" of Tommy Dreamer's bowl of M&M's last week, the Blue Meanie got the unenviable task of taking on the Rabid Wolverine, Chris Benoit. Benoit was already involved in the big brawl and so he was a little worse for wear, but against the Meanie, he had little to worry about as it didn't take long for Benoit to lock on the Crossface and send Meanie jiggling his way to the back a beaten man.

Chris Benoit made The Blue Meanie submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:02:21.
Rating: *** 1/4

Match #2
Hardcore Holly vs. Lance Storm
Lance Storm requested a match tonight as, in his words, he wanted to keep himself sharp and in top physical condition as he prepares for Monty Brown at Winter Warfare. His opponent would be the ever unpleasant Hardcore Holly, who reportedly was in a foul mood tonight (surprise, surprise). A good back and forth match with both men having some nice exchanges, Storm using some great chain wrestling to frustrate Holly and Holly getting a few good shots under Storm's jaw. Hardcore had the momentum going back his way when he connected on his picture perfect dropkick when his partner, KEN DOANE, came down to ringside. The mere sight of the Teen Phenom sent Hardcore into a rage as he demanded Doane get his "dumb ass to the back" before he kicked it. Doane couldn't understand why Holly was so upset, but he sure did when Storm caught Holly by surprise with a German suplex. A beautiful bridge later and this one was over. After the match, it took everything in Holly's power not rip Doane's head off.

Lance Storm pinned Hardcore Holly after a German suplex in 0:04:38.

RVD WANTS SOME ANSWERS, BUT PUNK'S NOT TALKING
Rob Van Dam suffered an intense beating at the hands of CM Punk late last year, and as of yet, we have received no explanation from Punk. One man that is not sitting well with is RVD himself, who came out for a rare interview. RVD was out for just that reason - getting answers. He called out CM Punk, but after a short pause, it was obvious that Punk had no intentions of talking tonight. Another man did though, and that was ELIX SKIPPER, RVD's opponent for the evening. He was less than sympathetic to RVD's cause, saying that it was now Prime Time and that soon enough, he would be the X champion, and that was what was actually important here. Van Dam was not in the mood, jacking the cocky Skipper in the jaw and getting this match underway.

Match #3
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. "Prime Time" Elix Skipper
RVD came out on fire as he was pissed at both CM Punk's refusal to give him answers and Elix Skipper's smart mouth. During the course of this match, we learned that Van Dam will get a chance to get his answers at CM Punk as a match has been signed between the two for Winter Warfare. Skipper was floored by the way RVD came out in this match, and only a well-placed thumb to the eye made things Prime Time again. Skipper had some nice offensive flurries, but RVD was not going to be slowed down. That is, until CM Punk appeared at the top of the ramp with Van Dam's gym bag in his hands. RVD was confused, but he became enraged when Punk pulled out a book of matches and lit the bag on fire! What was in that bag is a mystery, but it seemed very important to RVD. Van Dam's focus was gone, and it led to him being rolled up by Skipper who got a surprise pinfall.

Elix Skipper pinned Rob Van Dam after a roll up in 0:04:27.

THE HOOLIGANS WITH DOUG WILLIAMS AND PAUL BURCHILL
A new segment debuted featuring Doug Williams and Paul Burchill, called the Hooligans. In this segment, Williams and Burchill will compete in various activities to see which of them is the better man. A little strange, but hey, what else is Anarchy doing these days? Anyway, the inaugural competition was a rousing game of football (or soccer as us uneducated Americans would call it, according to Williams). The game consisted of Burchill playing goalie and Williams kicking. The first couple of kick attempts by Williams were fairly easily thwarted by the superior goalie abilities of Burchill. Williams' frustration levels were going through the roof and each kick had a little more intensity in it, but Burchill continued to shrug the shots away from the goal. We had an old west style showdown as Williams prepared for his final drive to score a goal. Williams went in to kick the ball, but instead he busted Burchill with a deliberate hard kick to the shin. Burchill was pissed and he slapped Williams across the face, and the fight was on, drunken soccer hooligan style. The segment ended with these two immaturely fighting each other on the ground. Well that was something.

Match #4
Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000 vs. Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt took out some frustrations a week ago when they essentially kicked the crap out of Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000, which is why this tag match was signed. Kash and Hoyt were as vicious as ever, but they were kept from dominating this match by the zany tactics of Sharkie and the Afro-Man. The antics got crazier as the match continued, and at one point Shark Boy and D-Ray depants Hoyt! The crowd loved it, but Kash did not as he quickly grabbed Shark Boy and dropped him with the Dead Level for the 3 count. The chaos wasn't over though as after the match, Kash and Hoyt were once again looking to continue the assault (once Hoyt got his pants back up, of course). But two well placed eye pokes by Sharkie and D-Ray let the real fun begin. A double noggin-knocker disoriented the surly heel team, allowing Shark Boy and D-Ray to reach under the ring to grab buckets of chum that they dumped right on Kash's and Hoyt's heads! The crowd was laughing, but two people not laughing were Kash and Hoyt, who vowed to get revenge.

Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt defeated D-Ray 3000 and Shark Boy when Kash pinned Shark Boy with the Dead Level in 0:05:57.

CHRIS BENOIT INTRODUCES A NEW TRAINING PARTNER
Chris Benoit was backstage with Frankie Kazarian. Benoit said he is very pleased with Kazarian's training and that he is well on his way to becoming someone worthy of being a superstar. Kazarian thanked him and said he feels like he is ready to go for the World Heavyweight Title right now. Benoit reminded him that he needs to be patient and though he is doing well, he's got a long way to go. At this point, the Crippler let Kazarian know that he has brought in the son of an old friend of his that he promised long ago he would help train when the time is right. He introduces Kazarian to Harry Smith, son of the late, great "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith. Smith shook Kazarian's hand and told him he looked forward to sparring with him. Benoit said he wants Smith to get a taste of the GCW ring and so he set up a match between Smith and Kazarian for Winter Warfare. "A friendly training match" as Benoit put it. Kazarian was less than pleased, but he did his best to stifle his displeasure.

Match #5
World Tag Team Title Match
Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle (c) vs. Randy Orton/Bobby Lashley
Given the individual skills of Randy Orton and Bobby Lashley, this was a very dangerous match for Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle to be thrown into without proper planning, especially with the World Tag Team Titles on the line. The crowd was antsy to see Lesnar and Lashley lock horns, and they teased it many times. However, other than a couple of brief lockups and near exchanges, nothing came of it in this one. However, what did come of this was a fantastic tag team title match filled with a ton of action. Lesnar and Angle had several instances where the titles were nearly taken from them, but after a long battle, Angle's desperation flying forearm was enough to barely keep Orton's shoulders down for the count. Orton and Lashley wanted to go at it some more, but JBL pulled them back, not wanting them to be hurt as he will need them for the Lumberjack match in the main event.

Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle defeated The Corporation (Bobby Lashley and Randy Orton) when K. Angle pinned R. Orton after a flying forearm in 0:13:15.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

Match #6
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
Edge had the unenviable task of facing Monty Brown, hoping to soften the Alpha Male up so Lance Storm will have an easier time at Winter Warfare. Storm himself watched the match from the top of the ramp, being sure to keep a safe distance between himself and the angry ruler of the Serengeti. Storm was coming apart at the seems with frustration (though you couldn't see it thanks to Storm's decided lack of personality) as Edge was much more focused on making sure his brothel was impressed rather than keeping Brown down. Edge did quite well for himself, but his lack of focus would lead to him eating a healthy dose of the Pounce and hitting the showers a loser. Luckily for him, his bevy of ladies will be there to comfort him. Meanwhile, Brown stared down Storm and told him that at Winter Warfare, "You will feel the Pounce... PERIOD."

Monty Brown pinned Edge with the Pounce in 0:06:09.

MNM IS GETTING RESTLESS
Shannon Moore, Johnny Nitro, and Melina were interviewed by our resident adorable airhead, Maria. After Melina made some snide remarks in Maria's direction, MNM mentioned that their patience is starting to wear a little thin due to this wait they've had to endure to get the World Tag Team Title shot they have coming to them. Maria got to be the bearer of bad news as she told MNM that they would be facing Rey Mysterio Jr. and Booker T at Winter Warfare. This earned Maria a slap from Melina and the utter disgust of MNM. MNM stormed off as Maria held her face in pain.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Lumberjack Match
Lumberjacks: Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Abyss, Chris Benoit, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Hass
Rhyno vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
The main event was much anticipated as it was the in ring return of John Bradshaw Layfield, who has been out since November with an ankle injury thanks to Kurt Angle. JBL still claims to be suffering from this injury, but most feel it is simply to avoid wrestling Rhyno tonight. The Manbeast has his issues with JBL stemming from money that JBL owes Rhyno for his services in the past. Rhyno wants that money, and he is willing to take it out of JBL's hide if necessary. JBL's strategy early was to run - run as fast as his rich legs would take him. However, the lumberjack rules were in effect, and Rhyno's Winter Warfare teammates ensured that JBL would go nowhere but back in the ring. JBL realized that his plan wasn't going to work, so he decided to make these rules work in his favor and tossed Rhyno to his side of the ring. The Corporation would give Rhyno a beating before Lesnar, Angle, Benoit, and Abyss made sure Rhyno got back in the ring. The Corporation's cheap shots certainly factored in though and when members jumped into the ring, all hell broke loose as all of the lumberjacks went at it! Referee Nick Patrick couldn't keep things under control but he tried anyway. In the commotion, JBL blindsided Rhyno with the Stock Market Crash. Patrick happened to see JBL making the cover and the Corporation pulled it off.

[Lumberjack Match]:
John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Rhyno with the Stock Market Crash in 0:12:07.
Rating: ***

The faces cleared the ring of the heels, but this was a major victory with War Games so close. Both teams will have one more week to establish momentum before the Match Beyond.
