[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 1/2/06

Snabbit888Posted on 11/17/06 at 06:19:26

2006 is finally here, and it brought GCW with it! And what better way to kick off the new year than by bringing you Monday Night Explosion from GCW's home, Chicago, Illinois! Tag team action would be the theme of the night, including Abyss and Rhyno teaming up to take on the Bashams, Bryan Danielson and AJ Styles taking on Bobby Lashley and Randy Orton of the Corporation, a tag team Fatal Fourway, and in the main event, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle defend the World Tag Team Titles against Anarchy! But first, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer had some huge announcements to kick off the show!

TOMMY DREAMER SHAKES UP GCW
Tommy Dreamer said that there would be some major changes coming to GCW, and he surely didn't disappoint tonight. He started by saying that Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner will no longer be the announce team, but rather have been replaced by JOEY STYLES and PAUL HEYMAN. Along those same lines, he mentioned that tonight would feature the brand new referee corps - Nick Patrick, Mike Chioda, and Chad Patton. He went on to say that in a cosmetic change, the North American Title will now be known as the Intercontinental Title. He continued by saying that the location for Super Cade III has been decided, and the June 25th super event will take place from the Great White North in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Rogers Centre. And this speaking of pay-per-views led the discussion to our next pay-per-view, Winter Warfare on January 22 from the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The main event has been signed, and it will be WAR GAMES. On one side, the Corporation - John Bradshaw Layfield, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, and the World's Greatest Tag Team. On the other - World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Intercontinental champion Kurt Angle, Abyss, Rhyno, and one more partner of their choice. JBL was not happy with this as he came to the ring on his crutches, reminding Dreamer that he is still suffering from a severe ankle injury and subject himself to arguably the most dangerous match in wrestling, the Match Beyond. Dreamer essentially told JBL "too bad" and that JBL better hope his ankle rehabs in short order, because next week he will be wrestling as he takes on RHYNO!

Match #1
Abyss/Rhyno vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Abyss and Rhyno were just announced as being a part of War Games, but Rhyno had a smile from ear-to-ear about the announcement that he gets JBL one-on-one next week. He may not get the money JBL owes him, but he may get payback either way. He couldn't look ahead though as he and Abyss had a difficult task in the former tag team champion Basham Brothers. Though not a regular team, Abyss and Rhyno worked exceptionally well together. The Bashams are obviously no slouches in the ring, having twice held the most coveted tag team prize in all the land, but the sheer savageness of Abyss and Rhyno allowed them to put this one away in highly impressive and dominating fashion.

Abyss and Rhyno defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when Abyss pinned Doug Basham after the torture rack drop in 0:05:58.
Rating: ** 3/4

Match #2
Shark Boy vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
Before the holidays, CM Punk, with no real explanation or apparent motive, assaulted Rob Van Dam and left him lying. All attempts to contact Punk have went unanswered (like anyone expected any differently), but he was in action against Shark Boy. Punk brought his sadistic nature to the table and Sharkie, though talented, didn't really know what to do with it. Punk was out to send a message here, and he did so in short order by locking on the Anaconda Vice to get what we thought was a victory, but when Punk refused to release the hold after the match, new referee Chad Patton asserted his authority by reversing the decision, giving Shark Boy the win by disqualification.

Shark Boy defeated CM Punk by disqualification in 0:04:14.
Rating: ***

Despite now losing the match, Punk didn't release the hold until ROB VAN DAM ran down and made him release it by force, kicking at Punk, nailing him with some forearms, sending him to the ropes, and dropping him with a spin kick. Punk rolled out of the ring and went for higher ground as RVD practically begged him to get back in the ring.

EDGE HAS YET ANOTHER WOMAN, AND LANCE STORM GETS SOME BAD NEWS
Backstage, Lance Storm walked into his locker room to find Edge to talk about their match tonight, and he was both shocked and appalled to find Edge with his bevy of ladies - Lita, Mickie James, and a mystery third woman. Storm asked about this third woman, whom Edge introduced as Gail Kim. "I got so into the Christmas spirit, that I decided I wanted a ho, ho, ho!" Storm groaned at the bad joke and told Edge he needs to get serious about their upcoming match when TOMMY DREAMER came into the room. Dreamer let Storm know that he just signed a second match for Winter Warfare. It will be Lance Storm taking on Monty Brown, and because of the ways that Storm has defeated Brown in recent months, including in the finals of the Best of the Best tournament, Storm will be forced to put his Beat Your Valentine pick the stipulations match on the line against the Alpha Male! Storm was worried that Brown was in the building tonight, but Dreamer reassured him that Brown wasn't in attendance, but mentioned before leaving that Brown will be wrestling next week and it will be against Edge! Edge was too involved with his ladies to care, but I'm sure when he realizes what has happened, he'll be upset later.

Match #3
Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. MNM (w/ Melina) vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team vs. Chris Benoit/Frankie Kazarian
Four of the top teams in GCW went at it next in an elimination style Fatal Fourway. Though MNM are new look now with the addition of Shannon Moore, but their skills in the tag teams ranks are still at the very top. They have a title shot coming some time in the future, which they've been trying to get since November. They have yet to gain in, but they would look better if they picked up this win. They got things going well early on when Moore pinned Frankie Kazarian with the Mooregasm when he hooked the ropes to block Kazarian's Wave of the Future attempt, causing the Future to hit his head hard on the mat, eliminating he and Chris Benoit. Kazarian looked pissed at himself as Benoit gave him some words as they headed to the back.

MNM kept themselves out of the ring for the next few minutes, letting the World's Greatest Tag Team and Booker T & Rey Mysterio Jr. go at it. The WGTT want to get their tag titles back and looked on top of their game tonight, but an unexpected turn caused them to be eliminated next as Sharmell handed Booker her purse, which was presumably loaded with a foreign object, and Booker blasted Charlie Haas with it, taking the WGTT out of the match. The referee may not have saw this, but Mysterio did, and he was not happy about it. Mysterio confronted Booker for his nefarious actions. Booker tried to shrug him off, but this distraction allowed Shannon Moore to roll Booker up from behind and with a pull of the tights, MNM gets the win.

Four Corners Match:
MNM (Shannon Moore and Johnny Nitro) defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin), Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. and Chris Benoit and Frankie Kazarian:
x S. Moore beat Kazarian via the Mooregasm in 0:05:46
x Booker beat C. Haas via a foreign object in 0:08:24
x S. Moore beat Booker via a rollup in 0:08:48
Rating: ***

The tensions between Booker and Mysterio continue. This time the argument was a bit more noticeable, but cooler heads once again prevailed, but with Sharmell in Booker's ear, how long can that last?

Match #4
D-Ray 3000 vs. Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
Kid Kash is furious that he is not the X champion right now, and he decided to take it out on D-Ray 3000. Kash may be a whiner, but he also has a meanstreak as he showed here, wasting no time jumping D-Ray before the bell, allowing him to quickly hit the Dead Level and win in a mere 17 seconds. D-Ray's night of punishment wasn't over yet as Kash and Lance Hoyt continued the beating on the Afro'ed One. SHARK BOY came out to help his buddy out, but an attempt at a flying crossbody was foiled when Hoyt caught him and nearly broke him in half with a backbreaker. Kash and Hoyt left, leaving Sharkie and D-Ray down in the ring.

Kid Kash pinned D-Ray 3000 with the Dead Level in 0:00:17.

THE BLUE WORLD ORDER WANTS ANOTHER CHANCE TO PROVE THEMSELVES
Tommy Dreamer is back in his office, eating some M&M's from a large bowl on his desk when Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie "took over" once again. Stevie yelled at Dreamer about not getting to be in the main event last week, saying that the only reason they lost to Chris Benoit and Frankie Kazarian is because Benoit and Kazarian are not in their league and they didn't even try. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Dreamer, Meanie was eating his M&M's. Stevie wanted the bWo to be put in the main event this week to wrestle for the World Tag Team Titles, but Dreamer denied it, saying that they would most certainly lose anyway. Dreamer did tell Stevie that since he is so sure that Benoit and Kazarian are out of their league, The Blue Meanie wouldn't mind wrestling Chris Benoit next week. Stevie was worried, but he tried to hide it well saying Meanie would kick Benoit's ass next week. As the bWo left, Dreamer went back to his M&M's. After looking at them for a second, he screamed out, "Who ate all my blue M&M's!? Dammit, Meanie!"

Match #5
Hardcore Holly/Ken Doane vs. Lance Storm/Edge (w/ Lita, Mickie James, & Gail Kim)
As Edge's brothel of ladies continues, he becomes more oblivious to what is going on around him, which is driving his far more serious partner Lance Storm insane. Edge seems to have no concerns that he has to wrestle Monty Brown next week, nor did he seem too concerned about Hardcore Holly and "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane. With his Best of the Best any stipulations match up for grabs at Winter Warfare, Storm cannot afford to be distracted. Edge showed that despite his love of the ladies, he can still get it done in the ring. Despite their differences in personality, Storm and Edge work great as a team, and they used that teamwork tonight. Ken Doane had accidentally taken the attention of referee Mike Chioda, allowing Storm to sneak in the ring and level Holly with a superkick. Edge caught Hardcore in an inside cradle and 3 seconds later, this one was in the books.

Edge and Lance Storm defeated Ken Doane and Hardcore Holly when Edge pinned H. Holly after an inside cradle in 0:04:47.
Rating: *** 1/4

Match #6
Bryan Danielson/AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton/Bobby Lashley (w/ Lamont)
A week ago, John Bradshaw Layfield showed some same strategy when he prevented Bobby Lashley from jumping in the ring to prevent Randy Orton from being pinned in a match against Abyss and Rhyno, but there were no signs of dissent tonight. The Corporation is going to have to go against Abyss and Rhyno again in War Games, so it was more a matter of "live to fight another day." Orton and Lashley fought again tonight, taking on the American Dragon and the Phenomenal One. Styles and Danielson are two of the more talented young competitors in GCW, but they were just overwhelmed by Lashley and Orton. Though they had the quickness advantage, Styles and Danielson got blasted early by the power of Lashley and the technical skill of Orton, and an Orton R.K.O. on AmDrag gave the Corporation a win.

The Corporation (Bobby Lashley and Randy Orton) defeated AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson when R. Orton pinned B. Danielson with the R.K.O. in 0:04:18.
Rating: *** 1/2

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - X CHAMPION CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
The guest on the first Palumbo's Pizza Place of 2006 was the X champion, "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels. The fact that Daniels is even the X champion now is a small miracle given the amount of injuries he had been wrestling with, but according to his words now, after the holidays he is feeling as healthy as he has since coming to GCW and he is ready to carry the X Title well into 2006 and beyond. This brought out ELIX SKIPPER, who as we know has been on the verge of getting a shot at the title for a few months now. Skipper had some major issues with Daniels' statements, saying that Daniels is only the X champion because he hasn't defended against Prime Time yet. "If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't have won the battle royal to even wrestle for the X Title. Not only that, but I beat your ass in Best of the Best. So you can either hand me the X Title now, or I can TAKE it." Daniels wasn't about to hand over his title, so he suggested that the two wrestle for the gold at Winter Warfare. Skipper agreed, and we have our third match for the next pay-per-view. Skipper wanted to get a little piece of the Fallen Angel before then, but Daniels saw it coming and sent Skipper out of the ring. This one is going to be a classic for sure.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
World Tag Team Title Match
Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle (c) vs. Anarchy
Despite their commitments as World Heavyweight and Intercontinental champion respectively, Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle are showing that they are also committed to being fighting World Tag Team champions, putting the gold on the line against Doug Williams and Paul Burchill, collectively known as Anarchy. Anarchy are one of the few tag teams in GCW that can match up with Lesnar and Angle from a technical standpoint, and they went toe-to-toe with the top two wrestlers in the world today. Despite a good showing from the Brits, the champions would retain after Lesnar hit the F-5 on Doug Williams while Angle tapped Burchill out with the Ankle Lock.

Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle defeated Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) when K. Angle made Burchill submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:07:11.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

After being declared the winners, in a move that surprised no one, the Corporation in its entirety ran in to take what it could out of Lesnar and Angle. JBL showed that his ankle might be a little healthier than he previously alluded to by getting some shots in of his own. ABYSS and RHYNO ran in to offer some support for their War Games teammates, but despite a brief change in fortunes, both the numbers and JBL's crutches helped give the Corporation the upperhand once more. The momentum was clearly on the Corporation's side until "Whatever" by Our Lady Peace cranked up and out came CHRIS BENOIT! The first GCW World champion was here and he was hitting anything from the Corporation that moved! The tide certainly swung the other way as the Corporation was disposed from the ring and Lesnar, Angle, Abyss, Rhyno, and Benoit stood tall in the ring. It appears as though the Crippler is the 5th man and will be in War Games!

Be sure to join us next week from Peoria, Illinois for Explosion! John Bradshaw Layfield returns to the ring to face Rhyno, Monty Brown vs. Edge, Chris Benoit vs. The Blue Meanie, and so much more! See you then!

Updated card for Winter Warfare, January 22, 2006, from the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri:

War Games - World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, Intercontinental champion Kurt Angle, Abyss, Rhyno, & Chris Benoit vs. The Corporation (John Bradshaw Layfield, Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, & The World's Greatest Tag Team)

X Title Match - Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Elix Skipper

Storm's any stipulations match on the line - Monty Brown vs. Lance Storm

If there is a god. The Meanie will beat Beniot.
