ROH SuperCard - What's Old is New Again 01/02/06

Jerrelle Clark pinned Jack Evans with the 630 Senton in 0:09:57.
Rating: ** 1/2

Great spot-fest high-flying opener. Both men are capable of 630 degree finishers, but Jerelle Clark is able to hit his after dodging Evans' corkscrew variation, causing him to wipe out on the mat.
(Jerrelle Clark +2, Jack Evans -2)

#1 Contenders Four Corners Match:
Jimmy Jacobs drew Kevin Steen, Matt Sydal and Prince Nana in 0:30:00.
Rating: ***

This match was a #1 contenders match. For what title? Any title the winner wanted a shot at, be it the tag titles, the pure wrestling title or even the ROH World title. This started a sort of tag match with Nana & Steen on one side against Jacobs & Sydal. Nana was dominated early on, but after Jacobs took a spill to the outside he quickly had to get on the defensive, even Matt Sydal tried to get a pin on him. Jacobs held off though, and he ended up being saved by the bell.

BJ Whitmer pinned Jimmy Yang with the Pumphandle Fisherman Buster in 0:12:55.
Rating: ** 1/4

BJ Whitmer tore into Yang like a man on a mission. His intensity caught Yang off-guard and Whitmer tore him apart mercilessly. What's gotten into Whitmer lately?
(BJ Whitmer +3, Jimmy Yang -3)

Ace Steel and Colt Cabana defeated Jimmy Rave and Fast Eddie when A. Steel
pinned F. Eddie with the Twist Of Cain in 0:15:55.
Rating: ** 1/2

The Second City Saints reunited for one night and they worked their asses off. They beat the pair of Jimmy Rave & Fast Eddie in an exciting close match-up.
(Ace Steel +3, Colt Cabana +1, Fast Eddie -3, Jimmy Rave -1)

Low Ki pinned Roderick Strong with the Ki Krusher in 0:08:59.
Rating: *** 1/4

Wow.. Low Ki totally shut down Roderick Strong. Low Ki makes the "I want the belt" motion and from the example he made out of Strong, I hope Bryan Danielson is paying attention.
(Low Ki +2, Roderick Strong -2)

Bryan Danielson and Steve Corino defeated
The Havana Pitbulls (Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero) when B. Danielson pinned
R. Reyes after a backdrop driver in 0:12:25.
Rating: ** 3/4

Danielson & Corino may not see eye to eye, but a hatred of the Havana Pitbulls unites them. Both Danielson and Corino nailed Rocky with their finishers in the opening minutes. Ricky Reyes was there to make the save, but Rocky was in a bad spot. Reyes tagged in and fought a hell of a battle, but he succombed to the numbers.
(Bryan Danielson +1, Steve Corino +1, Rocky Romero -1, Ricky Reyes -1)

Main Event:
Jay Lethal defeated Nigel McGuinness by countout in 0:06:53.
Rating: ** 1/4
(Nigel McGuinness retained the Pure Wrestling Title.)

Nigel started off strong, working over Lethal's left shoulder, but Lethal got Nigel outside and hit the Clutch Pumphandle Bomb on the concrete floor! Lethal jumped back in the ring while medical technicians immobilized and took away Nigel.
(Jay Lethal +1, Nigel McGuinness -1)

Card rating: ** 3/4

ROH Weekly: 01/03/06

Colt Cabana pinned Jack Evans with the Colt 45 in 0:06:21.
Rating: ****

Evans & Cabana deliver some high flying action that not the usual spotfest we typically see from Evans. Cabana works the transitions between spots really well and makes the match tell a real story. This was a match for the tape traders.
(Colt Cabana +3, Jack Evans -3)

Kevin Steen and Prince Nana defeated Jimmy Jacobs and Matt Sydal when K. Steen
pinned M. Sydal after a double leg-hook in 0:19:25.
Rating: ** 3/4

Since sides were drawn in the deadlocked four corners match at the Supercard, this tag match was drawn up. Same rules apply: whomever gets the pin gets a title shot. Any Title shot. Some tension between Jacobs & Sydal was expected, but they worked well as a unit wearing down Prince Nana. Steen on the other hand grew more annoyed with each minute he sat on the apron. Eventually he took matters into his own hands, tagging himself in when Nana wandered too close. Steen destroyed Sydal until Jacobs was having to save him from being pinned. But Sydal's luck couldn't last, and Steen wins and earns him title shot!
(Kevin Steen +2, Prince Nana +1, Matt Sydal -2, Jimmy Jacobs -1)

Tony Mamaluke pinned BJ Whitmer after a flying cross body press in 0:13:23.
Rating: *** 1/2

These two are no strangers to each other as Mamaluke & Rinauro won the ROH Tag titles from Whitmer and Jacobs. Whitmer again is all business, but Mamaluke's cheating ways kept him in control. Whitmer powered out of the Sicilian Stretch and nailed Mamaluke with a trio of Exploder Suplexes, but didn't get a pin! Mamaluke hit a flying cross body press out of nowhere and gets the win with a handful of thights. Whitmer hits Mamaluke with a Super Exploder after the match and leaves the ring.
(Tony Mamaluke +1, BJ Whitmer -1)

Rocky Romero pinned El Generico after a tiger suplex in 0:06:22.
Rating: ***

El Generico starts with his usual high-flying offense, taking Romero down with dropkicks and Mexican armdrags (the crowd shouting Ole! with each one). A pissed-off Romero cuts that short with a vicious lariat. He slapped on a few different submission holds to different body parts but let go before earning any submission victory. A tiger suplex later and the match is mercifully over for El Generico.
(Rocky Romero +1, El Generico -1)

Steve Corino pinned Ricky Reyes after a sitout power bomb in 0:11:20.
Rating: *** 1/4

Corino mentioned he had respect for Ricky Reyes after the SuperCard match, but it appears he still underestimates him as Reyes' offensive flurry had Corino reeling from pillar to post. Corino stayed in the match though and managed to hit the Old School Expulsion! It took a moment before he could go for the pin, and Reyes kicked out! Corino eventually got the pin with a sitout power bomb through a table.
(Steve Corino +1, Ricky Reyes -1)

Main Event -- 2/3 Falls Match:
Jay Lethal and Low Ki beat Nigel McGuinness and Roderick Strong 2 falls to 0:
x J. Lethal beat R. Strong via the Clutch Pumphandle Bomb in 0:15:08
x L. Ki beat N. McGuinness via the Ki Krusher in 0:25:44
Rating: *** 1/2

Lethal says he can take Nigel's Pure title anytime he wants and since Nigel wanted a tag match he enlisted something who he knows is just as lethal as him: Low Ki! Lethal and Low Ki's stiff blows overwhelm McGuinness and Strong at first, but they get in some shots back to even the odds. Lethal gets the first fall over Strong to put his team up by one. Strong & Nigel work together to wear down Lethal to try to even things up, but a mis-communication causes Lethal to get the tag to Low Ki! Low Ki destroys his opponents and hits the Ki Krusher on Nigel for the sweep!
(Jay Lethal +3, Low Ki +4, Roderick Strong -3, Nigel McGuinness -3)

Card rating: *** 1/4

Jack Evans pinned Delirious with the Corkscrew 630 in 0:13:52.
Rating: ** 1/2

Good high-flying opening match from the two curtain-jerkers. Jumpin' Jack Evans gets the duke with his amazing finisher.
(Jack Evans +2, Delirious -2)

The Embassy (Fast Eddie and Jimmy Rave) defeated El Generico and Marcos when F. Eddie pinned Marcos after a German suplex in 0:19:44.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Dunn no-showed.)

The Embassy team has a tough time putting away the fan favorites.
(Fast Eddie +1, Jimmy Rave +1, Marcos -1, El Generico -1)

Chad Collyer and Jimmy Yang defeated Colt Cabana and Matt Sydal when Yang defeated M. Sydal by countout in 0:02:20.
Rating: **

Matt Sydal launched himself over the top rope in a somersault plancha and missed, crashing into the guardrail. Cabana ties up Collyer so Yang could get the countout victory.
(Chad Collyer +1, Jimmy Yang +1, Colt Cabana -1, Matt Sydal -1)

Non-Title:
Sal Rinauro and Tony Mamaluke defeated Lacey's Angels (BJ Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs) when T. Mamaluke defeated J. Jacobs when J. Jacobs passed out in the Sicilian Stretch in 0:16:28.
Rating: ***

Jacobs & Whitmer are under new direction with Lacey as manager, but they fail to beat the champs in a non-title match.
(Tony Mamaluke +3, Sal Rinauro +1, Jimmy Jacobs -3, BJ Whitmer -1)

Low Ki pinned Roderick Strong with the Ki Krusher in 0:09:31.
Rating: *** 1/4

Rematch from the SuperCard at Strong's request. Same result. Low Ki will have the World Title very soon unless someone can stop him.
(Low Ki +2, Roderick Strong -2)

Triangle Non-Title Match:
Nigel McGuinness defeated Kevin Steen and Jay Lethal:
        x N. McGuinness beat J. Lethal via the Guvnor's Crumpet in 0:10:42
        x N. McGuinness beat K. Steen via the Guvnor's Crumpet in 0:21:55
Rating: *** 1/4
[Tina Ambrose-McGuinness interfered against Kevin Steen.]

Nigel's had difficulty with Lethal as of late and now Kevin Steen announced that he is seeking the Pure Title as well. Through innovation and sheer luck, Nigel is able to kill two birds with two Crumpets.
(Nigel McGuinness +5, Jay Lethal -3, Kevin Steen -2)

Main Event:
Steve Corino, Jerrelle Clark and Bryan Danielson defeated The Rottweilers (Homicide, Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero) when S. Corino pinned Homicide with the Old School Expulsion in 0:12:34.
Ricky Reyes suffered a neck injury. He will be out for approximately 9 months.
Rating: ** 1/2

Big main event match pits all three of the Rottweilers against Danielson, Corino and Jerrelle Clark. There were some misgivings about whether or not Clark was ready for this match, but he shined through. Danielson shut down Reyes with a backdrop driver, maybe shut him down a little too effectively. With Rocky checking on his partner, Corino hits his finisher on Homicide and gets the win for his team.
(Steve Corino +2, Bryan Danielson +1, Jerrelle Clark +1, Homicide -2, Ricky Reyes -1, Rocky Romero -1)
