GWA Ground Zero - 09/17/05 (Fallout Hype)

AzraelPosted on 08/21/06 at 07:14:40

Venue: Arrowhead Pond
Location: Anaheim, CA

We start with a match to begin this hype show. On the last Anarchy, El Generico faced the debuting Ricky Marvin and dropped him on his head on the turnbuckle with the Brainbusta in order to pick up his first win in the GWA. Angry and embarrassed, Marvin demanded a rematch for tonight, which he received.

[El Generico vs. Ricky Marvin]

El Generico immediately starts things out by locking up, and then breaking to point up in the sky and say Ole! Marvin gets angry and goes to work on Generico, attacking with more brawling moves than was to be expected from his debut performance. El Generico gets advantage with a Mexican armdrag and continues to snap him down with a series of armdrags. However, he takes the time to scream Ole! again and Marvin dropkicks him in the knee to bring him facefirst to the mat. Marvin quickly brings him into a Magistral cradle to take the win.

Ricky Marvin pinned El Generico after a Magistral cradle in 0:06:45.
Rating: *** 3/4

Marvin avenges his loss from next week because Generico took too much time engaging the fans. It seems like Generico's going to have to be at least a little serious to have a lot of success in the GWA, though he has all the tools.

Next is promo segments for each of the matches for tomorrow's Fallout, live from Anaheim, CA!

[Quiet Storm and Tajiri vs. Mexico's Most Wanted]

In order to preface this feud and perhaps show some insight into Jake Roberts' motivations, we will re-air the segment he taped at Bloody Summer before debuting in the GWA on July 2nd:

JR: When you think of hell, what do you think of? Unbearable fires that must beared for eternity? Brimstone? Piercing heat? Satan and his pitchfork? Not me. No, in my hell, the world is much as it is now. Except I have been forgotten. You see, we live our entire lives to be remembered. To believe that in some way we've touched some person. But that's not enough. Sure, everyone still remembers Columbus, but what about his neighbor? What about the merchant who sold goods to the town? They may have been remembered briefly, but 10, 20 years down the road, they've been forgotten too. Therefore, I need to do something big. I need to do something that will make my name stand throughout history. I need to do something that will make generation upon generation of men tell their children and their grandchildren about the great Jake "The Snake" Roberts. And I fear...that something will be terrible. I fear that I'm going to do something so wrong that it'll never be forgotten...a black mark on the history books. A spot that will never be removed. And I'm coming to the GWA. Soon. And when I do, as I've said, I'll bring people with me. People who share my vision. People who share my dream. To not be forgotten. To not be scattered by the sands of time. And what will happen when we arrive? It won't be for the weak of heart. Trust me...

The men he spoke of were obviously Mexico's Most Wanted, Halloween and Damien 666. Since entering the GWA, Mexico's Most Wanted have made devastating attacks on several opposing tag teams such as the Tag Team champions Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock, the Young Lions and most recently, Quiet Storm and Tajiri. On August 27th, Quiet Storm and Tajiri were scheduled to face Mexico's Most Wanted in a match, but they were blindsided from behind by their opponents and completely wiped out. Damien 666 jumped off the entry ramp to put Tajiri through a table while Halloween battered both Quiet Storm and Trinity with repeated chair shots. Due to this sickening display, both Quiet Storm and Trinity have been off TV. Tajiri managed to come back the next week and even pinned Kanyon, but Mexico's Most Wanted came in afterward and destroyed him. Jake Roberts cut an unsettling promo last week apologizing to Storm and Tajiri in advance for the pain and torment they're about to go through. Will Mexico's Most Wanted make good on his words, or will Quiet Storm and Tajiri manage to pull out the victory?

[Elix Skipper vs. Christopher Daniels]

When the GWA opened its doors, three men emerged as major players: Christopher Daniels, Elix Skipper and Low Ki. Together, they were Triple X. However, cracks quickly began to emerge in the faction. First, Skipper repeatedly failed to beat Edge and win the T.V. Title while Daniels lost in his bid to win the North American Title. Following WrestleRave, in which Daniels lost to Taz and Low Ki defeated Rey Misterio Jr., but then lost to the Amazing Red, tempers flared and Daniels kicked Low Ki out of the group. They had a match that night and Skipper interfered on Daniels' behalf in order to cost Low Ki the match. Instead of getting in Daniels' good graces, Skipper was also kicked out of Triple X, getting laid out by the Angel's Wings. Since that time however, we've seen Elix Skipper become more and more self-confident, taking the fight to Daniels. Daniels recently challenged Edge for the T.V. Title to prove that he could do what Skipper could not, but lost after Skipper came down to ringside and slugged him in the face. Daniels is committed to showing that he doesn't need anyone else to reach the top of the GWA, while Skipper is trying to show that he was not the weak link of Triple X and that he's his own man. Who will be proved right?

[Rhyno vs. Edge]

This feud began months ago when Edge defended the T.V. Title against Rhyno in consecutive weeks. Both matches were interrupted by Elix Skipper, so a third match was scheduled for after Bloody Summer. Edge won this match by punching Rhyno in the face with brass knuckles to knock him out and then hitting an exaggerated elbowdrop for the pin. This pretty much turned Rhyno insane and he joined the Dynasty soon after to get another chance at Edge. It looked like he had the match at WrestleRave well in hand when Edge punted him between the legs in order to pick up the disqualification loss. Since then, Edge has continued to hold onto the T.V. Title, cheating when necessary to win, while Rhyno has been racking up victories as well. Rhyno has also attacked Edge the last three weeks and left him laying twice. Will this finally be Rhyno's time or will Edge have the answer yet again?

[Scramble Match: Liquid Sticks vs. The Havana Pitbulls vs. The Spanish Announce Team vs. The Young Lions]

This match came about largely due to the muddled scene in the tag team ranks as well as the hijinks (some would call them shenanigans) of Liquid Sticks, who have repeatedly interfered in the matches of several teams, most often of the SAT. Eventually, Tully Blanchard had enough of the attacks and scheduled this match in order to try to settle the matter. Furthermore, he made the match a Scramble match, the first-ever of its kind in the GWA. In this match, once one person leaves the ring, someone from another team can immediately enter the ring without having to be tagged in and the first team to score a pinfall or submission wins. This insures that there is constant action inside the ring. The Young Lions are the most experienced team in the match, having been in the GWA since its inception. The SAT are a dangerous team, however, and defeated the Young Lions at WrestleRave before falling to Styles and Christian. The Havana Pitbulls have gone through a lot of hardfought battles and nearly knocked off both the Tag Team champions and Mexico's Most Wanted before being defeated. Liquid Sticks also have their fair share of victories and their antics have definitely given them a mental edge on all their opponents. Which team will emerge from the pack as the winner of this match?

[Lance Storm vs. Chris Jericho]

Lance Storm and Chris Jericho have met twice inside a GWA ring. Both times have ended in countout wins for Lance Storm as Jericho has just made entirely too many enemies, with Chris Benoit chasing him out of ringside the first time (5/14) and Taz the second (8/27). Initially, they were friends having teamed together early in their careers, but Jericho soon banded with AJ Styles, Christian and later Rhyno in order to form the Dynasty. Storm lobbied to be a part of the group, and Jericho relented, telling him that he'd be in if he beat Steve Corino. Unfortunately for Storm, he lost the match and the Dynasty brutally attacked him afterward. Reenergized and deciding to become his own man, he teamed with Chris Benoit, Ken Shamrock and the Rock to face the Dynasty the next week, but was pinned by a Lionsault from Jericho. The next week, he faced Jericho one-on-one to prove himself to himself, but that match ended with the aforementioned countout. Unhappy with the result, Storm lobbied Blanchard to get a rematch at Fallout, which was granted. Since then, Storm's been a thorn in Jericho's side, including preventing him from cheating to pick up a victory over Taz. Jericho though seems as confident as always and even appears to be looking forward to his match tomorrow. Will Lance Storm's superior technical ability be enough to win or will Chris Jericho show that he was the better Thrillseeker after all?

It's time for another match as Kanyon is in the ring. After blaming his loss to Jerry Lynn last week on slipping on a banana peel that some overzealous fan threw into the ring, he announces that it's time for another Kanyon Challenge. So he'll face any man but the usual four (Taz, CIMA, Mexico's Most Wanted). There's not even the usual brief wait as Johnny Jeter immediately runs down the aisle and slides into the ring. Jeter debuted last week on Anarchy and wrestled a very good match with Spanky, impressing a lot of people. He takes the mic and says it was always his dream to be able to make a living as a pro wrestler, and now that he's in the GWA, he's going to be making the most of it.

[Kanyon vs. Johnny Jeter]

Jeter goes at Kanyon with a flurry of forearms that rock him, but he makes a rookie mistake and runs headlong at Kanyon, allowing him to step out of the way and make him hit the corner hard. Kanyon follows up with a back suplex and goes to work with several of his high-impact moves. Kanyon gets two following a sitdown faceslam and brings Jeter to his feet, calling for the Flatliner. Jeter fights his way out of his grasp with elbowsmashes and hits a reverse neckbreaker to take control. Jeter fires away with punches until he gets tired of hitting Kanyon and gets to his feet. He hits a spin kick and covers for two, then moves to the corner and stomps his foot to signal the Superkick. Kanyon gets up and Jeter comes forward, hitting him in the face with the Superkick! Kanyon flies back and lands in the ropes. Jeter tries to pull him out, but Kanyon wraps himself around the bottom rope. Jeter stomps his head and hands until he lets go. Jeter makes the cover, but Kanyon's had too much time to recover and gets a shoulder up. Jeter then climbs to the top rope, waits for Kanyon to get up and jumps off with a flying cross body press. Kanyon moves out of the way, making Jeter crash and burn. Jeter gets up slowly as Kanyon catches his breath on the ropes. Kanyon then grabs Jeter and immediately drops him with the Flatliner, covering for three.

Kanyon pinned Johnny Jeter with the Flatliner in 0:09:02.
Rating: *** 1/2

Just like last week, Johnny Jeter showed a lot of good things, but had some bad luck tonight. Kanyon is a wily veteran and took advantage of the situation that developed by his landing near the ropes to pick up the victory from seeming defeat.

[CIMA vs. The Amazing Red]

The Amazing Red is the only man to pin CIMA's shoulders to the mat in a GWA ring, doing so in a four corners match on the GWA's very first card. However, their paths did not cross again until August 13th, where CIMA pinned Rey Misterio Jr. to become the #1 contender for the GWA Cruiserweight Title. CIMA made the match personal by dropping Misterio, Red's friend and idol, on his neck following the match with the Schwein. Ever since then, Red's been trying to attack CIMA for revenge, but he's never been able to muster a few seconds of offense before security breaks it up or CIMA retreats. Red's biggest blow so far was a Red Star Press he landed on August 27th following a six-man tag match. Red springboarded off the guardrail and landed on CIMA, who was stacked on a set of chairs. Neither man wrestled the next week, but Red defended his title against Deranged last week, but had to sit at ringside and watch CIMA completely decimate Joel Maximo. Further complicating matters is Jerry Lynn, who has returned from an injury caused by CIMA with the sole purpose of making him pay. In this vein, Lynn has blindsided CIMA several times over the past few weeks, including in the #1 contenders match, accidentally hitting Misterio with a chair first, and last week. As Lynn seems to be everywhere CIMA is, it stands to reason he'll make an appearance tomorrow. Will CIMA continue his dominance in the GWA and avenge his one pinfall loss or will the Amazing Red continue his hardfought Cruiserweight Title reign?

[AJ Styles and Christian vs. Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock]

This feud began on May 24th, when Benoit and Shamrock defeated Styles and Christian in the finals of the one-night Tag Team Tournament in order to win the belts. Styles and Christian believe that Benoit and Shamrock had an easier time in the first two rounds, which gave them an unfair advantage in the finals. Styles and Christian got their second chance on July 2nd, the first Ground Zero after Bloody Summer. Benoit suffered a concussion in his match at Bloody Summer against Chris Jericho and was a little loopy, but with a little luck, the champs retained when Shamrock made Styles and Christian collide into each other. Knocked a few pegs down the rankings, Styles and Christian created the Dynasty along with Chris Jericho and defeated the Young Lions and the SAT at WrestleRave to move back into the #1 contenders spot. The two teams have been trading blows and barbs with each other ever since. Two weeks ago, they competed in two singles matches: Styles faced Shamrock and Christian faced Benoit. They split the two matches and neither team has been able to gain an advantage on the other in this past month and a half. Will Styles and Christian bring the Tag Team Titles to the Dynasty or are Benoit and Shamrock simply the better team? Also, Chris Benoit has been a part of the show stealing match in both of the GWA's first two PPVs. Will this be the match of the night as well?

[Taz vs. Kurt Angle]

For weeks now, Taz has been fighting the label that he's merely a brawler. He gained the #1 contendership to the North American Title held by Kurt Angle by choking Christopher Daniels out at WrestleRave. Two weeks later, he and Angle signed the contract for the match, where it was revealed that Commissioner Tully Blanchard wanted to save Angle and Taz's first contact for Fallout and had hired Doug Williams to attack either man if they came to blows. Angle, for his part, has rarely tried to attack Taz, though he influenced Chris Jericho to do it for him. However, Taz managed to defeat Jericho and proved himself once more as being more than capable of winning the big matches. Angle, however, is unimpressed and has been largely taking this past month easy after making the Rock tapout at WrestleRave to retain his title. Angle most recently demolished Chavo Guerrero Jr. in order to show Taz "what happens when a real wrestler steps in the ring". Last week, Angle walked down to the ring during the six-man tag main event and taunted Taz until he chased him up the ramp. After a bit, Angle stopped on a dime and struck Taz in order to gain an advantage for their match tomorrow. Doug Williams ran in almost immediately to break things up and ended up slugging it out with Taz as Angle backed away? Can Taz show that he can defeat even an Olympic gold medallist or will Angle hold onto his title yet again? Furthermore, what could Doug Williams possibly want in exchange for keeping these two men apart? And how will his presence affect things?

Join us tomorrow for all these matches at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, CA! It's the GWA's third PPV, Fallout! Be sure not to miss it!

Quiet Storm and Tajiri vs. Mexico's Most Wanted

AWESOME promo from Jake there, you've got him down to a tee. MMW win this one.

Elix Skipper vs. Christopher Daniels

Daniels takes it here. Skipper may have been improving but Daniels still stands tall above him.

For the GWA T.V. Title:
Rhyno vs. Edge (c)

Let's give the duke to Rhyno since this isn't his first shot at Edge.

Scramble Match:
Liquid Sticks vs. The Havana Pitbulls vs. The Spanish Announce Team vs. The Young Lions

Liquid Sticks are responsible for this one in part so let's give it to them.

Grudge Match:
Lance Storm vs. Chris Jericho

Jericho. He's the one who underwent the major changes and three straight losses seems a bit harsh.

For the GWA Cruiserweight Title:
CIMA vs. The Amazing Red (c)

CIMA's been pretty hot lately so him to win.

For the GWA Tag Team Titles:
AJ Styles and Christian vs. Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock (c)

I'm split on this one to be honest so on the basis that we've already got a couple of title changes, I'll pick Benoit and Kenny to retain.

For the GWA North American Title:
Taz vs. Kurt Angle (c)

This one has been brooding for a while. Angle to claw it.
