WWC - Saturday Night Main Event - 05.25.07

rey619Posted on 08/18/06 at 16:57:31

Welcome to the fourth edition of Saturday Night Main Event, coming to you live on PPV from Washington DC! WWC has a record crowd of 3969 fans tonight, almost breaking the magical 4,000 limit! Tonight, the winners of the 2007 Tag-Team World Cup will be crowned, Second City Saints challenges MNM for the tag-team titles, Taz steps into the ring with Jamie Noble, and of course, the main event where Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio battles for the biggest prize of them all, the WWC World Heavyweight Championship in a ladder match.

We go straight to ringside, where Josh Matthews and Michael Cole (announcers this evening because of Taz' match), shows us the big, golden trophy which will be awarded to either Canada, Mexico, Japan or Italy. Now, we all know Italy won the 2006 World Cup last year, but can they accomplish the same in the ring? We also see WWC's newest signing sitting in the front row, our new Road Manager, none other than Kurt Angle! Angle decided to retire one year ago, when his multiple injuries became too much to bear for him. It looks like he's back in the industry now.

Team Japan (Genki Horiguchi & Dragon Kid) vs Team Italy (Nunzio & Tony Mamaluke) in the 2007 Tag Team World Cup Semi Finals

The 2007 Tag-Team World Cup will be decided tonight, with the Dojo as perhaps the biggest favorites. But first, they have to go through the very experienced team of Team Italy (aka FBI).

the Dojo utilized some crisp double team maneuvers that certainly put the FBI in their place, and the FBI had to take a breather on the outside. This did not deter the Dojo, who attacked them there, turning the match into a wild brawl which also involved the third Dojo member, Naruki Doi. For some reason, nobody likes Tony Mamaluke, and despite being Chris Benoit's paid henchmen, the crowd really wanted to see Mamaluke's ass being kicked. They got what they wished for, as Dragon Kid sent Mamaluke down with his lightning quick Dragon Rana to take team Japan to the finals. Nunzio was obviously injured in the end, and couldn't prevent the pin from taking place.

Nunzio tore his right meniscus. He will be out for approximately 5 cards.

- Temporary backstage interviewer, Beth Phoenix, tried to get some words from Nunzio, but the experienced grappler was clearly in agony, and had to get help from both Mamaluke and a trainer to get to the back. It's clearly too soon to say how serious this is, but it doesn't look good.

Team Canada (Harry Smith & Teddy Hart) vs Team Mexico (Psicosis & Super Crazy) in the 2007 Tag Team World Cup Semi Finals

Canada looked strong in their group matches, could they go past the Mexicools and earn themselves a spot in the finals of the World Cup?

These are two of the most popular tag-teams in WWC, and the crowd was evenly split in a "Let's go Mexico, let's go Canada" chant. Neither team took this match lightly, and dished out every move they got. Hart sent Crazy down with a brain buster, while Psicosis flew out on Harry Smith with a running tope. Psicosis displayed some nice combo work as he hit Smith with a kneebreaker, and then a quick back suplex to take the big man down for a close count.

At the 10 minute mark, Smith and Psicosis engaged each other in a pinning combination war, but every fall was broken up by the other man's partner, creating a weird situation where both Hart and Super Crazy were both out in the ring, just awaiting for a pinfall to take place. Crazy rectified this by taking himself and Hart out of the ring with a clothesline, trusting his partner to take it home by himself. Psicosis has just kicked out of a small package when he superkicked Smith straight in the jaw, bounced of the ropes and hit a legdrop for the win. A legdrop! Well, it has been a while since someone won a match at Saturday Night Main Event with a legdrop, but it did really happen here tonight!

- Before our next match, Kurt Angle took a seat between Cole and Matthews. Angle said that Taz was once one of the toughest bastards in the business, but he feared that the ring-rust would be evident, and that Taz' neck problems would come back to haunt him. He stills look forward to the match, though.

Jamie Noble(c) vs Taz for the WWC Strong-Style Championship

Noble had thrown out the glove for the ultimate challenge, defending the Strong-Style Championship here tonight against Taz! Taz has a bad neck, and Noble did not hold back, targetting the neck for all it was worth. Tazz got a huge ovation from the crowd, and fared pretty well in the beginning, dizzying Noble with a host of innovative suplexes, including a dragon suplex for a 2-count. With Taz' neck injury, you should think the match would include a lot of restholds, but alas, it didn't. Taz' ring-rust was evident though, and as Noble took him two with two neckbreakers, you could almost see the stars in Taz' eyes. Noble clasped on the Dragon Sleeper, and Taz quickly tapped out.

Noble grabbed hold of a microphone, saying that he had defeated everyone on the roster, including the announcer. There was really nobody left to challenge him now. He gazed in Kurt Angle's direction but Kurt just waved him off. Noble called him a chicken, and left with his manager, Dusty Rhodes.

Jamie Noble made Tazz submit to the Dragon Sleeper in 0:08:39.

Chris Benoit vs Test

"The Conscience of Wrestling" Test had a new opponent tonight, the Rabid Wolverine Chris Benoit. Not only were the integrity of wrestling on stake here tonight, so was the top contendership. Test had the size advantage in this one, but as Benoit had proven before, size doesn't matter when it comes to a wrestling machine such as him. Benoit is known to suplex everyone, no matter size, as evident when Benoit slung Test across the ring with a belly-to-belly suplex.

The "You sold out" chants directed at Benoit were frequent and loud, but the Crippler didn't seem to care as he methodically worked over Test. Test tried every move in his book, but Benoit seemed to have a counter for everything. A crucifix for a clothesline, wriggling out of the maneuver when Test attempted the pumphandle, stopping short of drop-kicks, etc. Benoit then went to work on Test's arm and face, setting up for the Crossface later. Test came back on the offensive, nearly taking Benoit's head off with a big boot, but Benoit wouldn't stay down. Instead, he lured Test down into the Crossface, but Test quickly reached the ropes. Benoit dragged Test back into the middle of the ring, but after nearly a minute in the painful hold, Test managed to roll over and almost pin Benoit. A groggy Test got back on his feet, only to be caught from behind with the triple German suplexes. On the last attempt, Benoit bridges the moves, pinning Test's shoulders to the mat. What an amazing match!

Chris Benoit pinned Test after a German suplex in 0:16:49.

- A rather lengthy video showing the history of the 2CS vs MNM feud is shown, with emphasis on the love/hate relationship between Melina and Punk.

MNM(c) (Joey Mercury & Merciless) w/Johnny Nitro & Melina vs Second City Saints (CM Punk & Colt Cabana) for the WWC Tag-Team Titles

This match is (perhaps) the culmination in the great MNM/Second City Saints feud that has been brewing since WWC's inception. There's so many aspects of this feud, Melina and Punk's love affair, Cabana's injury, the advent of Merciless... one thing's for sure, these guys really hate each other with every inch of their heart and soul. Cabana earned the ire of a bald biker-guy in the front row when he took the liberty of making out with his pretty girlfriend, but security straightened it out soon enough.

Cabana and Merciless started out, but Cabana did not pick the right time or opponent to start a chop-fest with, as Merciless nearly turned him inside-out with a devastating chop. Having Nitro and Melina ringside didn't hurt MNM's chances either, as both were busy throughout the match with sneak shots whenever the opportunity bid itself. Cabana finally figured Merciless out though. Be on the move all the time, and the Austrian would eventually exhaust himself. Merciless missed a lot of moves over a short period, and couldn't resist Cabana irish whipping him into the turnbuckles. Cabana ran towards him, shouted "Flying ass!", and hit him with a butt-bump avalanche. Even in times like these, Cabana finds the time to fill his wrestling with some humor.

At the 15th minute mark, Merciless finally succeeded in taking Punk down with the Death Shot. He was too close to the ropes though, and Punk put his foot on the bottom rope. Melina was right there, but didn't push it down! Nitro came over to her and yelled at her, asking why she didn't do it! Melina suddenly has had it with Nitro, and headbutts him! Nitro starts clasping at his injured neck as Melina rubs her head in pain. Mercury jumps down to help Nitro, but Cabana flies over the ropes and takes him out with a plancha. Meanwhile, Merciless climbs the ropes, meaning to take out everyone on the outside with a bodypress, but Punk has recovered enough, and low-blows Merciless, crotching him on top. Punk ascends the turnbuckles, hooks Merciless' arms, shouts "Triple H, eat my shorts!", before he Pepsi Plunges Merciless down to the mat. A 3 count later, and we have NEW World Tag-Team Champions!

Cabana and Punk celebrate in the ring, as ref Patrick retrieves the belt. Melina stops him, and snatches the belts from him. She turns to the Saints, smiles, and hands them the belts. Punk extends his hand to her, but she slaps it away and gives him a big, warm hug instead. MNM retreats, shouting back at the Saints and Melina that this wasn't over by a longshot.

(Second City Saints won the WWC World Tag Team Titles)

- The announcers are strangely silent at this point, but we can clearly hear Michael Cole sobbing, and Matthews asking him if he needs a napkin. Some sound guy runs over to them and tries to tell them that their on air. Guess the happy ending of this story was too much for our metrosexual broadcast team. We promise to bring back Taz next time.

- Beth Phoenix interviews Robbie Dawber, and the Dojo's interpreter says they are confident that they will win the tag-team world cup, before they move on and defeats the Saints for the tag-team belt. Dawber says that while the Mexicans were having siestas and robbing people's cameras at tourist beaches, the Dojo were training hard, and that when the Mexicans were eating tortillas, quesedillas, burritos and spare ribs, the Dojo were eating chicken, salmon and tuna. This was a no brainer!

Team Japan (Genki Horiguchi & Dragon Kid) vs Team Mexico (Psicosis & Super Crazy) in the final of the 2007 Tag Team World CUp

It all boils down to this. Who will be the best tag-team in the world? The Dojo has steam-rolled through every team so far, while the Mexicools have only one loss themselves... coincidentally against the Dojo in the group stage.
Could Super Crazy and Psicosis get their revenge? Or would the seemingly unstoppable Japanese team win the golden trophy?

One thing's for sure, Mexicools had certainly learned from experience how lightning quick and innovative the Puro guys were. As Dragon attempted his breath-taking handspring into a rana, Psicosis countered it with a power bomb. The Dojo really had to dish out something fresh if they were to take the Mexicans unaware tonight. Still, Mexicools are a few years older than the Dojo, and had serious trouble keeping up with the pace. Dragon Kid and Genki can hit you from so many positions, and with so many moves, that as the match moved on, nobody thought that the Mexicans stood a chance. A ropeflip moonsault from Dragon Kid was mere inches away from putting away Super Crazy.

From the 10th minute mark and onwards, we saw a lot of near falls, saved in the nick of time by the partner. Genki took Psicosis down with the Beach Break, while Super Crazy felt the Dragon Rana up close. It wasn't a matter of if, but when the Dojo would get the pin. But when everything looked completely hopeless, Psicosis managed one last burst of energy, ducking a clothesline from Dragon Kid, kicking him in the guts and sending him down with a Shining Wizard, sending him into the ropes, ready for a 619 or something. Psicosis went high risk, motioned for Crazy to keep Genki occupied, and flew halfway across the ring to decapitate Dragon Kid with the Psycho Guillotine for the win.

Incredible! Mexico has won the Tag Team World Cup! Psicosis and Super Crazy can't believe it, as they parade around ringside with the trophy, the fans going all crazy about it. The Dojo retreats, knowing that they were the best team in the world cup, but that somehow, the victory slipper right through their fingers. Never underestimate the fighting power of a desperate Mexican!

- A video recapping Rey's ascension to the top of WWC, RVD winning the Royal Rumble and their subsequent falling out is shown. Bill Alfonso is portrayed as the "whisperer in the ear", and the one that caused this friction. The camera then pans in on the belt, hanging above the ring.

Rey Mysterio(c) vs Rob Van Dam in a ladder match for the World Wrestling Confederation World Heavyweight Championship

There's no easy way to describe this amazing match. Rey and RVD really gave the crowd something to talk about in the months to come, as they put their bodies on the line for almost 20 minutes. Both men had several dives over and through the ropes. Rey springboarded off the damned ladder to hit RVD with a dropkick. Heck, RVD even pushed the ladder, with Rey on it, over the ropes and to the floor!

RVD was close to taking down the belt after 10 minutes, when Bill Alfonso threw himself at Rey, clasping his legs like a tick. Rey hit and kicked all he could, but it took quite some effort getting the insect away from him. Fortunately for the champ, he managed to shove down the ladder.

As the match wore on, both used the ladder more as a means to inflict pain on the opponent. Rob Van Dam hit a Five Star from it (injuring himself as well, as usually), and Rey used it to hit a seated senton on the challenger. At the 15th minute mark, Rey got really close. RVD jumped at him from halfway up the ladder, but Rey hit him mid-air with a dropkick and started the climb. As Rey fumbled for the belt, RVD pulled him down with a devastating powerbomb. Both men started to climb at the same time, and when they met at the top, it was RVD who had the fortitude to resist Rey's punches, sending the masked man down himself. Instead of going for the belt, though, RVD went to the top, balanced precariously on the ladder, and dove for the ultimate Five Star Frog Splash. Rey rolled away in the last possible second, crashing RVD to the floor. Rob spasmed about, before rolling out of the ring, where Bill Alfonso frantically tried to rouse him back into the ring again. Unfortunately, RVD was too injured to stand, and Alfonso took it upon himself to stop Rey, who by now had started the climb. He tried his tactic from earlier, but Rey kicked him loose, climbed onward and retrieved the belt!

Rey Mysterio retains the belt in an awesome match to end the Saturday Night Main Event. Rey has proven himself to be a good champion for the World Wrestling Confederation, but can he stand against Chris Benoit? Tune in in two weeks for Smackdown, and maybe you'll find out!

Aww, Nunzio tore his meniscus.  At least he injured something fun to say.

Glad to see the Mexicools go over the Canadicools.  I like that pairing better.  Not big on the Teddy Hart.

Tough loss to Tazzington McRustypants.  I wouldn't mind seeing Angle vs. Noble, except for Angle doesn't seem to want to bother with it.  He'd wipe the floor with Noble, but still, wouldn't be a bad match to watch

A nice match up here with Test and Benoit.  I figured Benoit to take it, but he was a bit more dominant than I had expected.

WOO!  New tag champs!  Thats stickin' it to MNM!

Congrats to the Mexicools for taking the World Cup.

And an excellent cap to the show as well with Rey retaining the title over RVD.  When Rey faces off against Chris Benoit, i'm not so sure he'll retain his title though.  Rey better treasure that thing while he still can, his days might be numbered.

good stuff
Snabbit888Posted on 08/18/06 at 22:50:56

The Dojo move onto the finals, and ouch to Nunzio's injury.  That sucks.  Injuries have a nice way of screwing things up.

All right... Mexico vs. Japan in the finals.  My money is on Mexico.

Good to see Taz back in the ring, but with his neck injury, no way he could have beat Noble tonight.  Noble challenging Angle soon?  Who's next, Steve Blackman?  Droz?

Four stars out of Test... wow.  That was a good match, and I'm more than okay with the finish.  Test's push is just getting some steam, but Benoit is supposed to be your top heel right now, so a loss here completely would have killed his momentum.

Just a note, it doesn't list the Second City Saints as the tag champs in your match result, but this was a great match, and Punk and Cabana needed to win here.  Not sure I like Melina turning here, mostly because it was pretty extreme when she tasered the holy hell out of Punk and Cabana. That seems like a lot to go through for the tag titles. :)

With how dominant the Dojo has been, I'm glad to see the Mexicools take the tag cup.  Gvies them a team to feud with instead of being Benoit's hitmen.

Great main event, and glad to see no shenanigans.  Just a great ladder match with the right guy going over.  Well played, sir... well played.
rey619Posted on 08/18/06 at 23:25:32

Well, my TNM had Mercury & Nitro listed as tag champs, and I forgot to change it before the card. It's been corrected now, but thanks :)

I understand what you're saying about the taser bit, and I'll try to explain it next Smackdown. I also agree with Chris, I could have mentioned more of Test's periods of dominance.

The Mexicools are extremely well over in WWC.. Psicosis is at heat 9 and Crazy is 8.. besides, the Dojo are still quite unknown, so I was really never in doubt.

The Strong-Style really didn't work as well as I thought, but I have some interesting things in mind for the next couple of months, so don't expect it to go away just yet. I'm still working as hell to get Noble over, but he's unfortunately still at 6.

Thanks for the comments  ;D

Good match with the Dojo moving on to the finals. Nunzio injures his meniscus though which is no good.

Hulk Psicosis! He needs to start cupping his ear to take in the cheers too.

Good match with Noble and Taz, though Taz's ringrust was too evident. Noble makes an excellent cocky heel.

Great match between Benoit and Test and the right man went over. All of Benoit's manipulations would have been derailed if he couldn't beat Test.

Second City Saints! With Melina jumping over to them, it looks like they could be champs for a while.

And Mexico wins the World Cup! Psicosis for MVP!

Good ladder match to end things. A bunch of cool spots scattered throughout and Rey ends up winning. Now to see whether he can beat Benoit.

Good card.
