Jim Crocket Sr. Memorial Cup

In they ancient days of my youth I remember what seemed like months and months of preparation for the original $1,000,000 Tag Team Tourney.  I remember the 2 or 3 magazines in a row that came out, telling of all the many entrants of the show.  but for the life of me, I cannot remember how many teams were involved.  I went to OWW and it told of teh highlights and winners, I've even found mention of the Mulkey brothers managing to fight their way in back when they were the Saturday morning professional jobbers.   Anyone help me out with this?

Thanks,

MGD

It looks like there were 16 tag teams in each event.  For more info, see: http://www.prowrestlinghistory.com/supercards/usa/wcw/cup.html

there were ALOT more than 16 teams in the 3 crocket cup tourneys
i think the actaul tourneys had 24+ teams because the top 10 seats would all have byes thru the first round

They would usually have "qualifying" matches for the fringe teams to get the fans identified with some of the outside talents that Jim Crockett Promotions would be bringing in for the two night event known as the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup.  These qualifying matches would usually take place on World Championship Wrestling Saturday Night Edition Sanctioned by the NWA.  And they would usually start them a good one to two months before the tourney.

And of course said "qualifying matches" would usually consist of the top 8 seeded teams beating some typical jobber to the stars teams on the weekend show for the NWA thusly earning byes in the first round of the tourney.  And to cause controversy once they gave the NWA World Tag Team Champions the #2 seed instead of the #1 seed.  I believe this may have been in the first one they ran.
