[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 10/24/05

Snabbit888Posted on 08/04/06 at 11:40:57

Our campus tour of the Big Ten continued as tonight we were at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, home of the Hawkeyes for Monday Night Explosion! A lot of big matches tonight as the stage continues to be set for Glory! Brock Lesnar defends the World Heavyweight Title against one half of Anarchy, Paul Burchill! We will also have an update on the condition of Kurt Angle, who was viciously attacked by John Bradshaw Layfield and the World's Greatest Tag Team last week. Also on the card, Abyss takes on Edge, Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. meet undefeated MNM, and in our main event, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam have exercised their rematch clause and will challenge the WGTT for the World Tag Team Titles! All that, plus Commissioner Tommy Dreamer has a major announcement! Let's get this show on the road!

BROCK LESNAR ANSWERS SOME QUESTIONS, BUT IS INTERRUPTED BY A NEW FACTION
Brock Lesnar, the World Heavyweight champion, kicked off the show with an interview. Lesnar addressed the questions he has been getting all week. "Everybody wants to know why I saved Kurt Angle last week. Don't get me wrong. I do not like Kurt Angle in the least. But nobody deserves what he got last week." Lesnar continued that although he didn't like Angle, he respects him for taking him to the limit so many times. This is when the music of JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD kicked up and here comes the big white limo with the steer on the hood. Lamont, JBL's personal driver, opens the door and out comes JBL and the World's Greatest Tag Team, the World Tag Team champions. JBL started by saying he wanted to come out and officially introduce Lesnar to the Corporation. "As the richest man in wrestling today," JBL cockily said, "I decided I was going to start using this immense wealth to make GCW my playground. And what I want is that GCW World Heavyweight Title. I am a Wrestling God, and I get what I want. And what I wanted was the best tag team is wrestling today on my side, and that's exactly what I got in Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, the World's Greatest Tag Team, the World Tag Team champions." Haas and Benjamin told Kurt Angle that the attack on him was "nothing personal; it was just business." JBL told Lesnar, "You may be big and he may be bad, but you're not rich, and I'm going to show you that money talks, Lesnar, when I become the World Heavyweight champion!" JBL's music started up as Lesnar gave him the death stare as we cut to commercial.

Match #1
Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. have been turning some heads in the tag team division, especially after beating the Basham Brothers a week ago on Explosion. They had another huge test ahead of them though as they took on the undefeated Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury, MNM. Melina's charges have a World Tag Team Title shot in the bank whenever they want it, but as of yet, they have sat on it. Booker T and Mysterio are meshing well as a tag team and their progression continued in a big way against MNM. Once again, Booker and Mysterio have added new tandem moves to their offense, including Booker picking Mysterio up in a back suplex and Mysterio backflipping out of it onto Nitro which got a nearfall. MNM would regain the advantage though as like them or not, they are tremendously gifted athletes. It looked like they were victory bound when they had Mysterio up for the Snapshot, but they tried it too soon as Mysterio reversed out of it with a headscissors/headlock takedown combo before tagging in Booker T. Booker, as the biggest man in the match, used his strength to throw around Nitro and Mercury with clotheslines and bodyslams. The numbers got to him though as MNM got back on the advantage, but that was cut shot when Mysterio flew back in with a springboard dropkick on Nitro, taking him to the floor. Booker caught Mercury with the Axe Kick from there, and they picked up the win.

Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) when Booker pinned Mercury with the Axe Kick in 0:06:44.
Rating: ***

MNM have been handed heir first defeat at the hands of Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr., and just like that, the tag team division gets even murkier. I'd hate to be Tommy Dreamer and the GCW Championship Committee right now with the task of trying to decide who are the number-one-contenders for the tag team titles.

TOMMY DREAMER MAKES HIS MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT
The Commissioner of GCW, Tommy Dreamer, came to the ring to make a major announcement, and he was carrying a championship belt with him. He said that after meetings with the Championship Committee all week, it has been decided in an effort to increase the competition in Global Championship Wrestling, that the Television Title, currently held by CM Punk, and the Cruiserweight Title, currently held by Shark Boy, are going to be unified. The consensus was that with one less title, wrestlers will have to up their games that much more to make GCW even more competitive than it already is. He said that the unification match will take place at Glory on November 20th, and the winner will receive the championship that he was holding, which will be called the GCW X Title. Dreamer said that the title will be decided in a Fatal Fourway with ladder match rules, and will feature CM Punk, Shark Boy, and two others to be named in the upcoming weeks. KID KASH obviously had a problem with this, as he and Lance Hoyt came to the ring. Kash said it was bogus the way that he lost the Cruiserweight Title to Shark Boy and he should be in the match to determine the first X champion. Dreamer said Kash had a point, but the unprovoked attack he and Hoyt made on Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 a couple of weeks ago makes him think Kash doesn't deserve to be in the match. Kash protested until Dreamer finally made him a deal and said if Kash and Hoyt could defeat Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 tonight CLEANLY, he would be put into the match. Kash didn't like the "cleanly" part but he agreed to the match anyway.

Match #2
Abyss vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita & Mickie James)
From the opening bell it was obvious that Edge wanted absolutely no part of the angry Abyss, and it's hard to say I blame him. It's one thing to wrestle a man who is as brutal as Abyss when he's in a good mood. It's a completely different thing to do it when he's infuriated. Edge tried a couple of things early on, but when he saw they weren't working, he decided this match wasn't worth it and started to walk to the back. Halfway up though, he was met by MONTY BROWN, who was walking at him and telling him to get back in the ring. Edge had to make a choice between Scylla or Charybdis. Either get in the ring and deal with Abyss or try to head to the back and contend with Monty Brown. Edge went with Abyss, and he paid for it dearly as the huge monster put him through hell in a short amount of time. The Alpha Male looked on in approval as Abyss hit the Black Hole Slam on Edge, but he wouldn't get a pin as RANDY ORTON was in the ring smacking Abyss in the back with a chair!

Abyss defeated Edge by disqualification in 0:05:18.
Rating: ** 3/4

Orton might be the only man in the world who is not showing fear of Abyss as he waylaid him with that chair several times, actually leaving the monster lying in the ring. Who knows if he could have done that without a chair, but we will find out what he can do at Glory.

Match #3
Shark Boy (Cruiserweight champion)/D-Ray 3000 vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash/Lance Hoyt
Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 were up to their tricks again, doing their best to get on the nerves of Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt. They were once again playing the mimic game with D-Ray once again transforming into D-Hoyt 3000 and Shark Boy becoming The Notorious S.H.A.R.K. The fans absolutely loved this, but Kash and Hoyt were not amused. The past couple of weeks have belonged to Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000. Tonight it all caught up with them as Hoyt established himself as the enforcer that he is, having his way with his two much smaller opponents. After blasting The Notorious S.H.A.R.K. with a big boot, Kid Kash tagged himself in, hit Sharkie with a German suplex and with a beautiful bridge, made the cover.

Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt defeated D-Ray 3000 and Shark Boy when Kash pinned Shark Boy after a German suplex in 0:04:37.
Rating: ** 1/2

With this victory, Kash now joins Shark Boy and CM Punk in the ladder match to determine the first X champion. It was announced after the match that the fourth and final man for the X Title match will be determined next week in a battle royal.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - ELIX SKIPPER
The Italian Stallion was at it again as Chuck Palumbo welcomed Elix Skipper to the Pizza Place. Primetime was in a great mood tonight, and we soon found out why. Skipper broke the news that because of the "total ass kicking" he gave Low-Ki last week, his former partner has left GCW for greener pastures. "This goes to prove that I carried that team for months and I proved that Primetime is where it's at!" After putting himself over more, Skipper concluded by saying that he has his eyes set on the X Title and that he will win the battle royal next week and move on to Glory to win the X Title.

Match #4
Television Title Match
CM Punk (c) (w/ Shaniqua & Daffney) vs. "The Alabama Slamma" Hardcore Holly (w/ Ken Doane)
CM Punk was still suffering the ill effects of his brutal match with Christopher Daniels at Trick or Trouble, sporting a bandage on his head. However as the Television champion, he is expected to defend his title often, which is why he was booked tonight to defend his championship against Hardcore Holly. Ken Doane knew that when Punk wrestles a match, his followers aren't that far behind, so he joined his partner at ringside to have his back. The Bashams didn't care much that the Teen Phenom was at ringside though, as they came down fairly early in the match and it didn't take long before they jumped Doane on the floor. Holly was holding his own against Punk in the ring, but when he saw his partner being beaten, he jumped to the floor and took it to Doug and Danny. While Holly and Doane were getting the better of the situation, Hardcore Holly was being counted out, and Punk retained his title.

CM Punk defeated Hardcore Holly by countout in 0:03:25.
Rating: ** 1/4
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

Recently Punk has been on the case of the Bashams not to get involved in his matches, but with the physical condition he's in right now, it didn't look like he minded too much that he retained his title by the means that he did. Now his goal is to get back to 100% before the title unification match at Glory.

AN EMBARRASSED LANCE STORM WANTS ANOTHER SHOT AT FRANKIE KAZARIAN
The North American champion Lance Storm has been going around all week complaining that the only reason he lost to Frankie Kazarian last Monday was that he wasn't prepared for him. Storm came out and grabbed the microphone. He challenged Kazarian to a rematch saying that the Future may have beaten him once, but it won't happen again. Kazarian came out and accepted the challenge. Antonio Santangelo ran down to the ring and called for the bell, and this match was on.

Match #5
Non-Title Match
Lance Storm (North American champion) vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
To Lance Storm's credit, he may have had a point about not being ready for Frankie Kazarian a week ago and that being the reason why he lost. The problem with that is though, it was Storm's arrogant challenge that got him in that predicament in the first place. Storm was better prepared this week, but conversely, so was Kazarian. This was a more even contest than last week, but Kazarian continues to stump opponents. Chris Benoit has been giving Kazarian all kinds of advice and showering him with knowledge, and the Future is showing himself to be a fast learner as he implements these things in the ring. Storm appeared to have this one in order after he hit a great looking piledriver. He then was looking to whip Kazarian into the ropes, a way he often sets up his Maple Leaf finisher. However, Kazarian had the presence of mind to reverse the move and run the North American champion into the ropes, pulling him back with a rolling reverse cradle and adding a picture perfect bridge. For the second week in a row, Frankie Kazarian has defeated the North American champion!

Frankie Kazarian pinned Lance Storm after a rolling reverse cradle in 0:06:04.
Rating: *** 1/2

This can't be the way that Lance Storm anticipated his second reign as North American champion starting. For the second week in a row, Storm has lost a match to an unproven youngster, who continues to impress with his in ring skills. The last thing Storm wants at this point is to wrestle Frankie Kazarian again, but he will have to as a third match between the two has been signed for Glory, this time with the North American Title on the line! Will the third time be the charm for the Future?

Match #6
World Heavyweight Title Match
On Commentary: John Bradshaw Layfield
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Paul Burchill (w/ Doug Williams)
Before this match even began, we saw John Bradshaw Layfield in the back with Anarchy, Paul Burchill and Doug Williams. Burchill had a huge opportunity as he was taking advantage of Brock Lesnar's willingness to be a fighting champion and getting a shot at the World Heavyweight Title here on Explosion. JBL used this opportunity to help his chances at the pay-per-view and he was seen paying Burchill and Williams off, presumably to soften Lesnar up before Glory. To make matters worse for the Monster From Minnesota, John Bradshaw Layfield decided to join Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner to add some color commentary to this title defense.

The match itself was a good one, and early on, Burchill looked like he was in over his head. Burchill is still early in his career and it looked like the pressure of wrestling for the most prestigious championship in wrestling was getting to him. He started to calm down though when he got on the advantage thanks to Doug Williams tripping Lesnar up from the outside. Burchill went on the attack with his British style of wrestling, a style that many of the Americans have trouble with due to the different nature of it. Burchill definitely held his own during this championship match, a lot more than many people expected. In the end though, despite consistent cheap shots from Williams on the floor, Lesnar put it into overdrive and finished his British foe off with the F-5.

Brock Lesnar pinned Paul Burchill with the F-5 in 0:08:47.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

As Lesnar was handed his title, he invited JBL to come into the ring. JBL declined, saying that Lesnar would get his at Glory.

CHRIS BENOIT WANTS AN EXPLANATION FROM EDDIE GUERRERO
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit found Eddie Guerrero in the back, a man who he has had his problems with as of late. A week ago, though, when Benoit has being assaulted by JBL and the World's Greatest Tag Team, Latino Heat pulled his nemesis to safety. Benoit wanted to know why Guerrero saved him last week, but Guerrero wasn't talking. Benoit threatened to kick Eddie's ass if he didn't talk, but Guerrero held firm and walked away, leaving Benoit even more frustrated than before.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam
Though Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam suffered a defeat last week at the hands of MNM, they decided that they would exercise their rematch clause for a World Tag Team Title shot tonight in Iowa City, and it was our main event on Explosion. This was a great opportunity for these men to prove themselves as they were given plenty of time for this match, and they used every minute of it. Angle and RVD really seemed to click in this one for the first time since they've been teaming. They had shown flashes of brilliance, but tonight was the first time they put it all together. Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin rarely have a bad night when it comes to tag team wrestling, and what resulted was this stellar main event and perhaps the best tag team match of the year.

The momentum swung back and forth so many times in this match that even after 15 minutes of great action, it was still completely up in the air as to who would take the victory. Angle and RVD came so close to regaining the titles, but they lost their momentum for good when RVD missed the Five Star Frog Splash. He did tag into Eric Angle, but he took himself out of the match for all intents and purposes as he hit hard on his ribs. Angle came in a house of fire on both Haas and Benjamin, but the numbers got to him as the WGTT put him down, allowing Haas to lock on the Haas of Pain. Angle struggled with all he had to get out of it, but when Benjamin cut RVD off from saving, Angle had to give it up.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam when C. Haas made E. Angle submit to the Haas Of Pain in 0:19:08.
Rating: ****
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

That is the way that tag team wrestling is supposed to be done. They had more than a couple of close calls, but the World's Greatest Tag Team live to fight another day as the champions.

Be sure to join us next week for Monday Night Explosion, where we will see a battle royal to determine the final competitor in the X Title match for Glory, as well as Hardcore Holly and Ken Doane taking on the Basham Brothers! Good night, everybody!

I'm a fan of a good tag team division. I'm glad you're making a point of putting the division over as being important and competitive. It definitely can be one of the best segments in the show, as the NWA of the 1980s proved. A tag team division so deep they had to institute another tag team title, the U.S. Tag Team Titles.

It has to be said again that the way you've made JBL progress from day one in GCW is impressive. You built him up, instead of him just coming into GCW as a main eventer. The Corporation should make for more interesting storylines and it should play well off Brock Lesnar, since I can sort of buy him as a common man considering he's from the midwest. Although, World Champions usually aren't poor either. :-)

Also, I'm looking forward to all the awkward Brock Lesnar/Kurt Angle segments. Remember when the WWE did those?

I like Tommy Dreamer's authority role. He doesn't seem impartial, sort of like he's in the Teddy Long mold of authority figures. Which I am really glad to have again, since Jack Tunney was the last major one on WWE television before Teddy Long. (Gorilla Monsoon was as well, but not the same stature as Tunney).

It seems like the big news from Explosion is that there will be a unification match of the TV and Cruiserweight Titles into the X Title. That will be a good idea as I don't think cruiserweights are perceived very well in their division. They need to contend for the major titles as well, but still be taken seriously. Since the X Title isn't about weight limits, it should work perfectly for what you're trying to do. I'm not quite sure if CM Punk will have what it takes to win the X Title. He's had a hectic wrestling schedule lately for GCW.

I see that Frankie Kazarian has taken Gunner Scott's role of Benoit's protege. I think Kazarian works best in a tag team, preferably with Matt Bentley.

And further showing you're committed to tag team wrestling, your main event isn't for the World Heavyweight Title, it is for the World Tag Team Titles. And it was a **** match too. That does a lot to make the wrestling fans perceive the tag team division to be just as important as the World Heavyweight Title contenders. And why shouldn't it be? It's a World Title too, but just for the tag teams.

I'm so gald i didnt name my faction with Edge, Double J, and JBL the Corporation. I have always liked your usage of JBL and now that he is in the title picture i believe he can be a top heel for a while.

I'm glad MNM lost because there seems to be to many "undefeated and unstoppable" teams and singles wrestlers. I like to see people seem somewhat human lol. I like the teaming of Booker and Rey. Booker can work the microphone while Rey entertains as he usually does.

X title is good. I think we will see your true booking genius with one less title. Its so easy to push guys when you have a lot of titles.

I really like the Edge/ Monty Brown and Orton / Abyss feuds. Orton always seems as if he is never scared that lets you know he is thinking. Thinking of a way he can beat Abyss, he wont show it but he's scared as hell lol.

On the other hand, Edge is scared of everyone lol.

Kid Kash won cleanly....FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER *Fireworks* lol

Primetime rules...but his voice...his voice sucks lol

I like how you gave Punks reasoning for not caring about the Bashams interfering. It was a long shot away from "CM blew up on the Bashams" I always like seeing something different then what I expect.

Lance storm losing to Kazarian is good. ITs always to see the best get over confident and lose to a young upstart. He will be ready at Glory I think.

I like how you put Burchill over without him winning. Saying he held his own against the World Champ means that he can contend and might contend in the future.

Typical JBL..."Not now Lesnar! Glory!!!"

Great tag team match there. Realistic ending to. No matter how good a match RVD puts on, that frog splash will bite him in the ass if he misses.

Great show man. Cant wait for next week.

Just a quick note, I noticed in your title histories that all the titles were updated, but in you TV Title history it ends with Matt Hardy, who no longer works for GCW.

Another good show, seems like you're really plugging away at your posting. Keep up the stellar work. The GCW Universe is expanding to include competition so you better watch out :P
Snabbit888Posted on 08/05/06 at 04:02:54

Ah, you are correct.  Good spot.  It has since been fixed.
