[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 10/17/05

Snabbit888Posted on 08/03/06 at 06:33:28

Welcome everyone to the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin, the home of the University of Wisconsin Badgers, and welcome to Monday Night Explosion! A lot of big happenings in GCW as we are less than 24 hours removed from Trick or Trouble. Brock Lesnar is still the World Heavyweight champion, defeating Kurt Angle in an I Quit Match. Lesnar is in the building tonight, as is his next challenger for the title, John Bradshaw Layfield, who in our main event will take on "The Crippler" Chris Benoit! Also, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam continue as a tag team as they take on the undefeated MNM. The World Tag Team Titles are on the line too as the World's Greatest Tag Team defend against AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson. And Randy Orton will be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place to discuss why he assaulted Abyss last night! All that and a whole lot more!

KURT ANGLE VENTS HIS FRUSTRATIONS
Kurt Angle was standing in the middle of the ring flanked by the other members of Team Angle, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, the World Tag Team champions. It was a different Angle than we've seen in the past as he seemed a lot more raw and honest. "I have tried and tried again, but I just can't seem to beat Brock Lesnar. I have all the amateur credentials in the world over him, but no matter what I do, I can't get my hand raised!" Angle continued to run himself down when JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD's music hit and the limo pulled out. JBL stepped out of the limo as Lamont opened the door for him, and he was all smiles, cowboy hat and all. JBL began by putting himself over, talking about how he "single handedly showed much bravery to slay the monster Abyss" to become the top contender to the World Heavyweight Title. His attention turned to Angle, telling the former World champion that he should step aside because it's JBL's time to shine. Angle wasn't in any mood to listen to JBL, telling him that he didn't like him when they started doing business together and he didn't like him now, and that if he had a problem with him, he should "get his ass down to the ring right NOW!" JBL started toward the ring and then smiled. "No, I'm not going to come down there, Kurt Angle, because you have a different fight on your hands tonight." When Angle inquired as to what JBL was talking about, Haas and Benjamin jumped him from behind! It was all a setup! Angle fought back on his former students, but he was overwhelmed when JBL got in the ring and blasted him with the Stock Market Crash! The crowd booed as JBL, Haas, and Benjamin each took turns attacking Angle. Haas nailed Angle with a huge piledriver. Benjamin picked Angle up and planted him with the T-Bone. The WGTT held Angle up as Lamont handed JBL a chair. The huge Texas powerhouse wound up and cracked Angle right across the skull, dropping him to the canvas and busting him wide open. At this point, the crowd was booing with great intensity. Haas once again picked Angle up and hit a piledriver, this time right on the chair! Angle was in a bad way as he lay motionless on the mat, and it didn't look like this was going to end until the roof blew off the building when BROCK LESNAR sprinted to the ring! Benjamin took a swing at Lesnar, but the champ ducked and sent Haas over the top with a clothesline. JBL sent Haas at Lesnar next, but the Monster From Minnesota met him with a huge lariat before picking him up with a Gorilla Press and tossing him onto Benjamin! Lesnar charged then at JBL, but the money man ducked out of the ring and slid to safety. JBL and the WGTT argued with Lesnar as they walked up the ramp while the EMTs ran down to check on Angle, whose neck was in bad shape. He was placed on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital. We didn't get word on his condition tonight, but we will have an update next week on the health of Kurt Angle.

Match #1
Low-Ki vs. "Primetime" Elix Skipper
With where these two are now, it's hard to imagine that Low-Ki and Elix Skipper were once the tag team champions of the World. Highlights were shown of the cage match from last night against AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson, namely Skipper's cage walk huracanrana and Ki's putting a nail in their partnership with the Ki Krusher after the match. Low-Ki had months of pent up frustration to give to Skipper, who had gotten him into so many bad situations with Styles and Danielson that he was looking for payback. Skipper may have thought that he was going to be able to do whatever he wanted for as long as he wanted, but that bubble burst in a bad way at the start of this match as Ki's stiff kicks abused Primetime's ribs. As a matter of fact, most of this match featured Ki taking a mammoth ass kicking. The fans seemed to enjoy as Low-Ki punked Skipper all around the ring. Unfortunately for Low-Ki, he was so engulfed with rage that he cared more about destroying Skipper than winning the match, which led to him losing the match. Low-Ki went for a Phoenix Splash, but Primetime got out of the way and hit the Play of the Day to escape with a victory.

Elix Skipper pinned Low-Ki with the Play of the Day in 0:05:16.
Rating: ***

Low-Ki was furious after the match and showed that displeasure by taking it out on the ring steps. That goes to show you that in wrestling, it can't always be about revenge. Sometimes you just have to win the match.

EDGE, LITA, AND MICKIE JAMES EXPLAIN THEIR ACTIONS
There are very few people in GCW who are less likeable than Edge, Lita, and now Mickie James, but they all came out for an interview to explain their actions from last night. Clips were shown at the request of the Rated R Superstar showing Mickie James pull Edge out of the way when Matt Hardy went for a dive, and then subsequently kicking Hardy below the belt. Mickie James explained that she did it because she wanted to be with a real man like Edge and that Hardy simply didn't "measure up... in the ring, and otherwise." Edge followed by saying, "Some people might think that having the two hottest women in GCW could cause a conflict and some jealousy between the ladies. But that's not the case. Let's just say that sometimes it takes THREE to tango. Or should I say horizontal mambo?" They all shared a good laugh until the music of MONTY BROWN started, bringing out an irate Alpha Male. Brown had a microphone with him. Edge tried to get the first word in, but Brown forcefully told him to shut up. "I don't give a crap about you or your threeways with those two whores up there! What I do care about is that you cost this big cat his North American Title! You might think you're a bad ass, but you're messing with the baddest cat on the Seregeti, chump! I want you in the ring, and you're going to feel the Pounce... PERIOD." Edge immediately tried to back out by saying he had nothing to prove by beating Brown's ass. Brown said, "Fine. If you want fight me in a match, I'll come down and beat your ass right now!" Brown walked with purpose and got into the ring as Edge showed great courage and fortitude by putting Lita and Mickie James in between he and the Alpha Male. As Brown closed in on Edge, he finally cracked and said he would fight Brown, "but not tonight." Brown said that was fine, and they could do it at Glory. Edge might have two beautiful women, but he might not have his health after Glory.

Match #2
Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr. (w/ Sharmell) vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. formed an alliance and have been competing in tag team action, last week wrestling the Bashams. No clear winner was determined at all as the two teams degenerated into a huge brawl and thus wrestled to a no contest. The rematch was signed for tonight, and it was a good one. Booker and Mysterio have been working on some tandem offense, and they unveiled it tonight with some success. However Doug and Danny Basham have been teaming their entire lives and were wrestling a better tag team match. The key with Booker and Mysterio though is that they will never give up and are very resourceful, as was shown when Doug Basham had Mysterio up for an electric chair drop, but he was too close to Booker who nailed Doug with a right hand which allowed Mysterio to get a Victory Roll for what could be considered an upset.

Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when Mysterio Jr. pinned Doug Basham after a Victory Roll in 0:06:00.
Rating: *** 3/4

Booker T and Rey Mysterio Jr. get a huge win by defeating the former World Tag Team champions. One has to wonder how this is going to make CM Punk feel, a man who has an ultra low tolerance for failure.

Match #3
Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
When talking about tag team action in GCW, you can't go without mentioning the two teams in our next match. On one side was the former World Tag Team champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, and on the other side was perhaps the hottest team in GCW, MNM, accompanied by the uber-hot (and uber-devious) Melina. Many expected that Angle and RVD might disband as a team after losing the titles to the World's Greatest Tag Team, but this match showed that not only are they not disbanding, but they are looking for their rematch for the titles. With every week, they gain more experience, and their adding more pieces to the puzzle with every week. Melina has Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury wrestling like a finely tuned machine, and unlike Angle and RVD, they're willing to do whatever it takes to win, which tonight included Mercury catching RVD below the belt with a back kick while Melina had the referee distracted. The Snapshot followed, and you're not going to kick out of that.

MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) defeated Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam when Nitro pinned RVD after the Snapshot in 0:08:00.
Rating: *** 1/4

With MNM beating Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, the tag team division has never been more wide open. Who will emerge as the next challengers for the titles?

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - RANDY ORTON
Randy Orton came out to be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place, and just by looking in his eyes you can see that he is a different man. He still has that trademark ego, but he has a colder and more sinister edge to him. After some traditional shenanigans by the Italian Stallion, he got down to business and asked Orton, "Why would anyone in their right mind want to piss off Abyss-ah?" (When is Palumbo going to stop with that fake accent?) Orton didn't at all seem upset as Palumbo ran down a list of what Abyss was capable of before saying that he is scared of no man. "It is my destiny to be the World Heavyweight champion, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to make that happen. And if that includes beating an overgrown retard's ass, so be it." You could see the arrogance oozing off of Orton - that is until ABYSS ran down and wailed away on him with some right hands. Abyss whipped Orton into the ropes in set up of the Black Hole Slam, but Orton hooked the ropes and bailed to the floor. Orton may not be afraid of Abyss, but he's not stupid either. He won't be able to bail though on November 20th in Edmonton, Ontario, Canada, as it will be Randy Orton vs. Abyss at Glory!

Match #4
Cruiserweight Title Match
"The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash (c) (w/ Lance Hoyt) vs. Shark Boy (w/ D-Ray 3000)
Though everyone has been highly entertained by the antics of Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000 in regards to their pissing off of Kid Kash and Lance Hoyt, everyone fully expected Kash to beat the ever-living crap out of the man from the sea. After all, since day one in GCW, who hasn't kicked the crap out of him? That wasn't going to keep Shark Boy and D-Ray from having some fun, as tonight Shark Boy was accompanied by "D-Hoyt 3000." That's right; D-Ray was dressed exactly like Hoyt, except he was still sporting his trademark afro. Though the crowd was amused, Kash and Hoyt were not, and that was displayed by the sheer magnitude of the beating Shark Boy received. It looked like all the jokes were over, but things changed when D-Hoyt 3000 got gutsy and decided this would be the perfect time to slap Lance Hoyt on the ass. The fans loved it, but Hoyt did not. He went after D-Hoyt, but the imposter slowed him down with a poke to the eye. While Hoyt tried to regain his sight, D-Hoyt reached under the ring and pulled out a bucket of chum. When Hoyt finally got his sight back, he was met with a bucket of chum over his head. The crowd popped huge, but Hoyt was PISSED. He wiped the chum out of his eyes and then sprinted after D-Hoyt, who made a quick escape and ran to the back, the angry giant right on his heels. Kash saw this all transpiring and was yelling for his bodyguard to come back, but Hoyt was long gone. Kash turned his attentions back to Shark Boy, but the fish man caught Kash by surprise with an inside cradle for the 1-2-3!

Shark Boy pinned Kid Kash after an inside cradle in 0:05:58.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Shark Boy won the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

In one of the biggest upsets of the year, Shark Boy of all people is the new Cruiserweight champion! Kid Kash was in complete disbelief as William Buck announced that he was no longer the Cruiserweight champion. He went after Shark Boy, but the new champ ducked out of the ring where referee Petey Pluck handed him the Cruiserweight Title. Nobody thought that Shark Boy would be holding championship gold, but this goes to show that anything can happen. Shark Boy may be the champion now, but he's now going to have to deal with a vengeful Kid Kash.

LANCE STORM ISSUES AN OPEN CHALLENGE
The new North American champion Lance Storm was out with the belt around his waist. He started by saying his trademark, "If I can be serious for a minute..." which didn't win him any new fans. He said now that he is once again the North American champion, the title is "right back where it belongs." Storm continued by saying that even though the people at the University of Wisconsin don't deserve it, he was going to dazzle them by wrestling anyone in the back who wanted to be humiliated. He added, "Non-title, of course," citing the infamous 30-day rule. The challenge was answered when FRANKIE KAZARIAN came down to the ring, full of new found confidence since Chris Benoit took him under his wing. Storm, the cocky veteran, merely smiled and got himself ready for the match.

Match #5
Non-Title Match
Lance Storm (North American champion) vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
Though the championship was not on the line, this was a huge match for Frankie Kazarian, who is still trying to find his footing in GCW. Though he is a former two-time Cruiserweight champion, he's looking for bigger and better things, and a victory over Lance Storm would put him well on the way. Storm made the traditional mistake of underestimating a young gun. Storm didn't want to show it, but he had to be a little less than 100% after his match with Monty Brown last night, but he was wrestling a good match. The problem for him was that Kazarian was not going to lose for anything in the world. Storm was doing everything he could though, hitting a picture perfect high dropkick and a springboard clothesline. Storm let the Future get back to his feet, measuring him up for another dropkick, but this time Kazarian swatted it away. Storm had the breathe knocked out of him as he crashed to the mat, and when he got to his feet, he walked right into the Wave of the Future.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Lance Storm with the Wave of the Future in 0:04:50.
Rating: ***

Lance Storm's plan to "dazzle" the fans surely backfired when Kazarian pinned his shoulders to the mat. A victory of this magnitude will certainly elevate him up the standings in the North American Title division.

Match #6
World Tag Team Title Match
The World's Greatest Tag Team (c) vs. "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson
Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin are now the World Tag Team champions for the fourth time, a highly impressive feat to say the least. They hardly had a chance for the titles to get warm before they had to defend them, tonight against AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson. Styles and Danielson were in a brutal cage match against Low-Ki and Elix Skipper last night and both experienced a good deal of blood loss. You never know when you will get another crack at the World Tag Team Titles though so they got themselves amped up and ready to go. Styles and Danielson have highly unique styles which forced Haas and Benjamin to change up what they do to keep up. This led to a very innovative tag team contest. Styles and Danielson gave it their all, but only one day removed from a steel cage match, they could only do so much before they were defeated.

The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) defeated AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson when C. Haas pinned B. Danielson after an inverted DDT in 0:07:25.
Rating: *** 1/4
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

The World's Greatest Tag Team got past the first test of their fourth reign, but the tag team division is packed full of talent and the challengers will come from all angles.

CM PUNK HAS NOTHING TO SAY
We were supposed to have an interview with CM Punk as he was standing by with Maria. Maria tried to ask him several questions, but each time Punk said nothing. He was wearing a bandage on his forehead after the brutal Dog Collar Match with Christopher Daniels last night, but the expression on his bandaged face did not change as the Television champion kept silent. At the end of the interview, Punk simply looked at Maria and in a highly creepy manner, gave a sick and twisted smile. This guy is nuts.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Our main event promised to be a good one as the number-one-contender, John Bradshaw Layfield, had a tough challenge ahead of him as he took on the former World Heavyweight champion, Chris Benoit. Many people feel that if it weren't for Randy Orton's involvement, he wouldn't have defeated Abyss to earn that number-one-contendership. A win over Chris Benoit would help cement his status as the next challenger for Brock Lesnar's World Heavyweight Title. The problem with that is that Benoit himself is always looking to keep himself in the hunt for a World Title shot and a victory over the number-one-contender would have to put him in the picture. JBL was wrestling like he had something to prove, not resorting to his typical cheap tactics but instead wrestling with Benoit. To his credit, he held his own. Benoit took him to the mat several times, but the Crippler took his lumps in the process as JBL is an old school bar fighter and certainly made Benoit work for it tonight. Benoit did everything he could to put JBL away. He hit his German suplexes, swandive headbutt, even got him in the Crippler Crossface once, but JBL would not stay down. Benoit uncharacteristically became flustered and went to the well one too many times, trying for the Crippler Crossface again. This time, JBL shoved him into the ropes and when he came back, took his head off with the Stock Market Crash.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Chris Benoit with the Stock Market Crash in 0:13:04.
Rating: ***

JBL makes his first match as the top contender a successful one by pinning the former World champion in a good TV main event. JBL had more to prove though as he called down CHARLIE HAAS and SHELTON BENJAMIN, and the three put the boots to the already beaten Benoit. FRANKIE KAZARIAN ran down to stop the beating on his mentor, but he was quickly overwhelmed. Things looked to be grim for Benoit and Kazarian when EDDIE GUERRERO ran down to the ring, but instead of joining in on the attack, he grabbed Benoit's foot and pulled him out to safety. Everyone was perplexed by this, but it didn't matter to JBL and the WGTT, who continued their assault on Kazarian. That is until the music of BROCK LESNAR hit and here was the World Heavyweight champion! Haas and Benjamin jumped him as soon as he got in the ring, but Lesnar was so fired up that he didn't even care as he blasted through them with hard right hands and forearms. After Haas and Benjamin had been dispatched, Lesnar challenged JBL to come at him, but JBL wisely made his leave from the ring to a loud chorus of boos. JBL has successfully gotten under the skin of Lesnar, but now what?

Updated card for Glory, November 20, 2005, from Rexall Place in Edmonton, Ontario, Canada:

World Heavyweight Title Match - Brock Lesnar (c) vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

Abyss vs. Randy Orton

"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge
HugeRockStar760Posted on 08/03/06 at 22:14:44

Well that was definitely a hot opener you had there. It's amazing to see how far JBL has progressed since he made his debut. I remember he went through that losing streak.

Edge simply rules. Monty is just jealous that he has two valets. I have to laugh at Matt Hardy's luck, even on TNM people are ruining his love life. :-) I think after awhile Mickie's personality will rub Lita the wrong way and lead to a feud.

I'm glad you've found a niche for Chuck Palumbo. I just wish the WWE had a segment just like the Palumbo Pizza Place just so I can see his Italian stereotypes and gestures.

Great CM Punk interview. Sometimes the most effective interviews are the ones where no words are spoken. CM Punk can do that because he has great facial reactions. I don't know if there is anything this guy can't do right. He'll be a valuable asset to GCW that's for sure.

Also, considering the date of this show, you're getting closer to having to write off Eddie Guerrero from the show...Are you still going through with that or have you changed your mind?
Snabbit888Posted on 08/03/06 at 22:30:58

I'll admit I'm on the Punk bandwagon too. I'm trying to tweak his gimmick slightly in GCW so he's no so "from the darkside" and bring it closer to his real life gimmick, but I don't want to abandon what I've done with him this year.

And yes, Eddie Guerrero's death is fast approaching.  The biggest trick has been booking him normally so it doesn't seem like I have prior knowledge of his death.  It kinda sucks... the more I've written out this feud with Benoit, the cooler it was getting.  But yes, I'm sticking to this real life thing.  Sucks, doesn't it?
dabirdmanPosted on 08/04/06 at 10:16:34

I think the Angle turn will work for him

JBL being so healish is just so much fun to read. I hope Hass and Benjamin invest that money cause im sure when JBL is done with them....wont be pretty

1 question who doesn't love Lance Storm?

looking foward to the next show, good read
