Dark Matches

Team Canada (Teddy Hart and Harry Smith) defeated
Team UK (Cpt.Burchill and First Mate Spud) when Teddy Hart pinned Cpt.Burchill
after the Doomsday Rana in 0:00:54.
Rating: *

A quick and embarrassing loss for Team UK. Cpt. Burchill's partner, First Mate Spud didn't want to enter the ring, and exhibited quite the irrational fear for the squared circle. While Burchill tried to persuade Spud to come up on the apron, Smith hoisted him up, and Hart took him down with the Doomsday Rana.

Colt Cabana defeated Gregory Helms via pinfall in 0:09:54.
Rating: ***

Cabana is back in action, and danced down to the ring to Copa Cabana. He took a liking to a pretty brunette in the front row, and even kissed her, right in front of her boyfriend. Cabana is a smug bastard, but he is also a good wrestler, and won the match when Helms missed a frog splash.

WWC Smackdown

Chris Cage vs Kid Kash

Kid Kash comes off a solid win over Elijah Burke at the last SNME, even putting Burke on the injury list. Apparently, he has also inherited Beth as a valet, because the cocky Kash dragged her along to the ring as well as the boisterous Dusty Rhodes. Cage came in dressed in 80's clothing and chewing Hubba Bubba bubblegum. He held a short but enthusiastic promo where all he said was: "The 80's rocks!" That was enough to get the crowd going, because as we all know, the eighties did really rock.

A lot of back-and-forth holds between the two men, neither able to get a momentum. Kash totally disrespects Cage by slapping him, and a brawl is on. Kash comes out on top and sends Cage down with a spinning heel kick. Kash executed a couple of suplexes to soften Cage up before putting him down with the Death Penalty. He then forced Beth into the ring to raise his hand in vitory. Nice opening match.

Kid Kash pinned Chris Cage with the Death Penalty in 0:08:22.

Two weeks ago, a highly impressive Saturday Night Main Event saw Rey Mysterio retain the World Heavyweight Title in a highly controversial fashion against Rob Van Dam. RVD was pinned, but video footage clearly saw Van Dam drape his leg over the rope. The SNME also saw Chris Benoit make an impact, as he put a stop to RVD's beatdown of the champ. Tonight's show began with Bill Alfonso whistling his way down the aisle, RVD in tow, a mixed chorus of boos and cheers following him.

Alfonso said that last night, RVD was robbed for the WWC World Heavyweight Title by a grave mistake from the referee, and that he would have beaten Rey in the end. He demanded that Rey come down and hand over the title. The champ did come down, but he had no intentions of giving the belt to anyone. Instead, Rey demanded to know what happened to 'fair play' and 'athletic competition', pointing to the fact that RVD had attacked him afterwards. RVD apologized, and said that he lost his temper when the ref didn't see his foot on the rope. RVD moderates Alfonso's demand, and asks Rey for a rematch.

Just as Rey is to reply, Test comes down, saying that last night, he was finally accepted by the Philly crowd, a feat he accomplished by surviving everything Burchill threw at him, and walking out victorious. Test demands that he should be given a title shot. This brings out Lashley, who laughs at Test, saying that he has beat him in every match, and that he is still undefeated in WWC. If someone should be given the top contendership, it should be him.

Finally, Chris Benoit makes his return to Smackdown to a great chorus of cheers. Benoit says that even though he did help Rey Mysterio last night, he came back to the US for one reason only, and that was to win a world title again. Rey was now surrounded by four guys who all wanted a shot at his title, and only one could settle this, WWC owner Shane McMahon. Shane O'Mac came down and said that while all of them deserved to be in the title picture, only one of them could have the top contendership. He then booked a tag-team main event for tonight, Chris Benoit & RVD vs Test & Lashley. Whoever made the pinfall was considered the top contender. Wow, Shane really knows how to mix things up... can these teams even co-exist?

Team Japan (the Dojo) vs Team Mexico (Mexicools)

The 2007 Tag Team World Cup is in motion, and two of the favorites faced each other tonight as the Dojo squared off against the Mexicools. Crazy and Psycosis haven't had the best track record so far, but they were determined to get back on track by winning this tournament.

Even though Dragon Kid and Horiguchi have worked together for a while, and displays a lightning quick tag-style, Mexicools definetely have more experience working together as a tandem. Super Crazy tried taking out Dragon Kid's knees early on, and landed a German suplex for a two count. Dragon Kid have more tricks up his sleeve, landing a stunner and a faceslam in quick procession on Psicosis.

The end of the match saw nearfall after nearfall from both teams. Crazy almost got the pin after a standing moonsault, while Dragon Kid almost won it after a leaping swinging DDT. After an amazing bout between the clashing Puro and Lucha style, Genki puts away Psicosis with the Beach Break to win the first match of Group B.

Mexicools (Psicosis and Super Crazy) when Horiguchi pinned Psicosis with the
Beach Break in 0:15:52.

[Naruki Doi interfered against Super Crazy.]

- We come back from commercial, and Josh Matthews is standing by with the Dojo and their spokesman, Robbie Dawber. Dawber says that the Dojo are determined to win the Tag Team World Cup, and that no team can stop them doing just that. Matthews tries to ask again about the Dojo's mysterious benefactor who sent them here in the first place to take care of Rey Mysterio. Dawber said that even he didn't know the identity of him, but that he would be here soon enough.

Team USA (London&Kendrick) vs Team Italy (Nunzio & Mamaluke)

Match #2 in Group A. Team USA consisted of Paul London and Brian Kendrick, who had Jimi Hendrix' version of the Star-Spangled Banner as an entrance song. In addition to being a match in the tournament, London and Kendrick had something to pay back their partner at SNME and his ally. Nunzio and Mamaluke attacked London and Kendrick after falling to the Dojo.

London was impressive in the opening, sending Nunzio down with a springboard enzuigiri and the dropsault, before attempting the 450 splash. Mamaluke made the save and brought London down with a swinging DDT. It really seemed as if Mamaluke have been training hard, working the indies and so on, as he took London to the limits, both with high-flying maneuvers and restholds.

These two teams really tried to outdo the previous match, and maybe they didn't, but it was a highly athletic contest as well. Team Italy grabbed the win when Nunzio faked a tag and put London down with the Arrividerci.

CM Punk vs Merciless

A rematch from Saturday Night Main Event here, as Merciless tried to get even on CM Punk, who defied all odds and beat the big Austrian two weeks ago.

It was more or less the same match as SNME. Merciless dominated Punk early on with big powermoves, until Punk saw fit to hit him with the Welcome to Chicago backbreaker. Joey Mercury and Melina were there to interfere, but this time, Colt Cabana came down as well, trying to prevent foul play, and maybe try something on his own. However, the cunning of Melina was too much for Cabana. When the feisty manager feigned stomach cramps, Cabana went over to her with some water, giving Mercury an opportunity to smash Punk in the head with a chair. Merciless took him down with the Death Shot, but Punk kicked out at 1! This was unfortunately only a short burst of adrenaline, as Merciless caught him with the Doctor Bomb for the win.

After the match, Cabana tried to enter the ring, but Mercury caught him with the chair, blasting him in the head. Johnny Nitro came out wearing a neckbrace and took part in the beatdown as well. After a couple of minutes, Melina tells the boys that 'enough is enough', but they won't listen to her, as Merciless and Mercury take down Cabana with the snapshot, and Nitro repeatedly rams Punk's knee into the guardpost. She starts shaking Nitro, but he pushes her away, and then goes mental on her for trying to stop her. MNM leaves two bloody and battered men in the ring, and as they walk out, Melina takes a long, last look at Punk and Cabana.

Merciless pinned CM Punk after the Doctor Bomb in 0:06:47.

[Colt Cabana interfered against Merciless.]
[Joey Mercury interfered against CM Punk.]

- As we come back from a commercial, MNM are berating Melina for turning her back on them. Nitro is furious, telling her to have priorities straight, and that he has turned a blind eye to her "extra-carricular activities" with Punk because he felt it aided the team. If she, however, thinks to let the team down, she's in trouble. Melina says that the team always comes first, but she isn't totally convincable.

Test & Lashley vs Rob Van Dam & Chris Benoit

There will be a lot of tag-team action going on here as long as the World Cup takes place, but when the matches are as good as they have been tonight, it doesn't matter. This tag-team match was a #1 contendership match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Whoever scored the pin would get a match against Rey Mysterio at the next Saturday Night Main Event. It also meant that two people who didn't like each other at all had to cooperate. Lashley and Test have feuded since WWC's inception, while Benoit made himself unpopular with RVD and Bill Alfonso when he applied the Crippler's Crossface in order to save Rey two weeks ago.

Still, all four men are proffesionals who want to win the big one, and kept it that way for a time. Benoit took Test down with his German suplex series, RVD hit Lashley with Rolling Thunder, and Test and Lashley simply tossed the smaller guys around the ring for a while. Then, the problems began. Lashley tried to tag Test, but missed the tag and fumbled a little before hitting his hand. Test gave him a sour look which clearly hinted to the fact that Test gave Lashley a hard time for being big and goofy. Lashley responded by tagging out, real hard on Test's chest, and the partners started brawling.
RVD quickly took advantage of this chaos by hitting Benoit in the back with a spin kick, but Benoit quickly gained the advantage, taking down his partner with a Northern Lights. He then quickly applied the Crippler's Crossface.
As Lashley dumped Test out of the ring, Benoit let go of RVD, offering him to Lashley. Lashley didn't say "no thanks", and promptly took RVD down with the Dominator, earning himself a WHC shot at the next SNME.

Test and Lashley defeated Chris Benoit and Rob Van Dam when Lashley pinned RVD
with the Dominator in 0:14:08.
Rating: ****

Rey Mysterio came out to the aisle during Lashley's celebration and asked Benoit what he was doing. Benoit just looked at Rey before walking on. What's going on?

Notes

Nothing too spectacular at this live event. Chris Benoit came out early and challenged Rey for his title, a match Rey won. They shook hands afterwards.

Lashley decimated Burchill in a short streetfight, before he flung Spud halfway across the ring. Lashley told Rey Mysterio to watch out.

If we take a look at the Round Robin standings, we see Teddy and Harry with a good grasp on Group A, while Group B is still pretty open.

Chris Cage is "That 80's Guy?"  Yikes. :)  Good to see Kash keep up his momentum and take this one.

Man, tonight's main event is going to be as cutthroat as they come.  No way these teams co-exist.

Just not a fan of the Dojo.  I'm not familiar enough with them to care, truthfully.  But a great match, especially for TV and Team Japan gets the first win.

Boo to Kendrick and London losing.  They both doth rule and them losing makes me cry the saltiest of tears.

Good match with Punk and Merciless.  I like the way you've booked ol' Chris the Bambikiller.  Good ending too with Nitro going nuts and getting pissed at Melina for trying to stop the beatdown.  Do I smell dissention?

And what is Benoit up to?  He simply gave that match to Lashley.  And now I feel bad for Mysterio as he'll have to defend the title against Black Lesnar.  Yipe.

rey619Posted on 08/01/06 at 21:58:10

The Dojo as a stable is created, yes, but the wrestlers are all real. Horiguchi and Dragon Kid belongs to the Do Fixer stable in Dragon Gate, while Naruki Doi is a member of Blood Generation (or maybe he defected to that splinter group.. not sure). Anyway, I realize that very few people here are familiar with them (Carlzilla and Critic of the Dawn certainly two exceptions), but just think of them as rather small, intense Japanese guys with a wide arsenal of moves. Their purpose will soon be unveiled... after further confusion, of course.

I too, do feel sorry for Rey... I could've just let him have been squashed in a non-title match like they did in real life, but now he has to defend the title as well. I'm merciless... not the Austrian type...
americamamushiPosted on 08/01/06 at 22:35:04

Awww... poor Pirate Burchill.  Me thinks Spud needs to be keelhauled for mutiny!  Arrrr!

Haha, I love that "Cause we all know, the 80s did really rock" ;)  Good opener to your show.

Interesting main event.  And no... these teams can't coexist ;) especially with the man who scores the pinfall becoming the #1 contender.

I like the tag team world cup idea.  I was rooting for Team Japan and apparently I know how to pick'em.

Was expecting Team USA to get the win in the following bout though.

Interesting stuff going on within MNM.

Holy crap on a cracker did the main event ever break down :)  Lashley gets a shot at Mysterio though, I like the prospects of that.  And yes, I am also curious as to "What is going on"

Good stuff my man.
