[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 9/19/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/30/06 at 01:56:30

One day removed from Retribution, GCW cruised into the Fleet Center in Boston, Massachusetts for Monday Night Explosion! Controversy surrounded the ending to the World Heavyweight Title match, and we would receive some answers tonight! Also on the card, a lot of action including three big title matches, including Kid Kash defending the Cruiserweight Title against Rey Mysterio Jr., CM Punk trying to regain the Television Title from Matt Hardy, and Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam putting the World Tag Team Titles on the line against the Basham Brothers! And in our main event, Abyss goes one-on-one against Eddie Guerrero!

TOMMY DREAMER CLEARS UP THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE PICTURE
Tommy Dreamer wasted no time in coming out and clearing up the situation with the World Heavyweight Title. Dreamer said that though it was an unpopular decision, the referees last night made the correct call last night when both Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle had their shoulders counted out. He also knew that because of the controversy, a true winner wasn't decided and that the fans would not stand for that. Therefore, Dreamer announced that at Trick or Trouble from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois on October 16th, it would be Lesnar/Angle III for the World Title. Dreamer continued by saying he didn't want this to be just any old match, so he announced that next week there would be a 5-on-5 elimination match between Brock Lesnar and four partners of his choosing against Kurt Angle and four partners of his choosing. Whose ever team wins will get to choose the stipulations for the title match at Trick or Trouble. At this point, JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD came out with the ever faithful Lamont, and he had something on his mind. JBL grabbed a mic and told Dreamer that it was a bunch of crap that Kurt Angle was getting another crack at the World Title when he has shown he can't beat Lesnar. Not only that, but JBL reminded the Commissioner that JBL pinned Angle's shoulders to the mat in the Elimination Chamber at Summer Sizzler. Dreamer told JBL that he had some good points, but that he didn't appreciate JBL getting in his face and calling him out as being wrong. "But I'm a fair man, JBL, so here's what I'm going to do for you. First of all, you will be a member of Kurt Angle's team next week. And you're right; you do have a claim at a World Heavyweight Title shot. So at Trick or Trouble, you will be involved in a number-one-contenders match. Your opponent will be the winner of the main event tonight between Abyss and Eddie Guerrero!" Though the crowd loved this, JBL was not at all excited about the prospect of another encounter with Abyss.

Match #1
Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000 vs. MNM (w/ Melina)
MNM made a huge impact when in their debut they defeated seven other teams in Tag Team Turmoil and have guaranteed themselves a World Tag Team Title shot in the future. This didn't help Melina, Johnny Nitro, or Joey Mercury to be any more modest as they came out once again with a full barrage of paparazzi and a red carpet. There may have been a lot of fanfare, but they weren't going to be able to walk through their opponents tonight, Shark Boy and D-Ray 3000. For the lack of success that Shark Boy has had in GCW, he has quite a cult following and alongside someone like D-Ray 3000 who is as wacky as he, they're going to delight crowds for some time to come. Unfortunately for them, MNM wasn't nearly as amused by the antics of Sharky and D-Ray, and despite some early trouble, they won this match in pretty convincing fashion with an impressive move they call the Snapshot.

MNM (Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro) defeated D-Ray 3000 and Shark Boy when J. Mercury pinned D-Ray after the Snapshot in 0:03:46.
Rating: ***

MNM has an attitude that makes them hard to like, but they are an impressive team and look to have some great success in the future. One team that has already had some problems with them though is KEN DOANE and HARDCORE HOLLY, who ran in after this match and brawled with Nitro and Mercury. Melina was screaming for Doane and Holly to get out of there, but the fight wasn't going to be ended with mere words. It took the GCW Official Brigade to pull these four men apart. After this fight, we were told that these two teams will meet next week on Explosion.

Match #2
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Steve Bradley
We haven't seen too much of Steve Bradley lately, but he was in action this week taking on Booker T, who as always was accompanied by Sharmell. One thing you're sure to see in a Steve Bradley is aggressive action, because Bradley never seems to slow down. Booker T is a veteran though, and he found ways to weather the storm and use Bradley's aggressiveness against him. Booker did a great job of using Bradley's momentum, and he drove the enforcer of Team Angle into the mat with a powerslam. The wind was driven right out of Bradley's lungs and it was enough to put him away for the three.

Booker T pinned Steve Bradley after a powerslam in 0:05:18.
Rating: *** 3/4

It didn't take Bradley long to regain his bearings, and unfortunately for Booker T, he didn't see Bradley come up from behind and nail him with a knee to the back, followed by the Smashmouth. Bradley left to a chorus of boos as Sharmell tended to her husband.

BROCK LESNAR GETS SOME OFFERS FOR PARTNERS FOR NEXT WEEK
With the big elimination match next week, both Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle were needing to get some partners. Angle didn't have any trouble as Tommy Dreamer gave him John Bradshaw Layfield as a partner, and then obviously the other members of Team Angle - Steve Bradley, Shelton Benjamin, and Charlie Haas - were onboard. Lesnar usually chooses to do things on his own, so finding partners was a bit more of a challenge for him. Luckily, there are enough people who have problems with Team Angle that Lesnar had volunteers for his team. ERIC ANGLE and ROB VAN DAM, the World Tag Team champions, came in and told the World Heavyweight champion that they would not take no for an answer and they wanted to be on his team. Lesnar agreed, which is when BOOKER T came in, still fuming over the aftermath of his match with Steve Bradley. Booker T said he knew Lesnar and he had their problems in the past, but he wanted to be on the team as well. Lesnar said Booker could be on the team, because he doesn't care who his partners are - Kurt Angle is going to be taken care of once and for all.

Match #3
World Tag Team Title Match
Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam (c) vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam had a big match tonight that would serve as a barometer of how they have become as a team as they defended the World Tag Team Titles against the former champions, the Basham Brothers. Angle and RVD have been said to be hard at work to improve their tag team skills, putting in extra time in the gym and in the ring to fine tune their partnership. Very few teams in the world team as well as the Bashams though, as Shaniqua has these two brothers working like a well-oiled machine. Angle and RVD were at a disadvantage right away, as Shaniqua's distractions and illegal switches from Doug and Danny had the champions flustered. However Angle and RVD showed great tenacity to not let the Bashams tactics get them down, as they fought back to get the win after thwarting a double switch attempt. RVD jumped in and nailed Doug Basham with a springboard back kick and Angle hit Danny Basham with a beautiful fisherman suplex to get the pin.

Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam defeated The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) when E. Angle pinned Danny Basham after a fisherman suplex in 0:08:42.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam retained the GCW World Tag Team Titles.)

These are the types of matches that can help a team turn the corner, and beating a team with the credentials of the Bashams is an impressive way to make a statement. The first time they wrestled the World's Greatest Tag Team, it could be attributed to the element of surprise. We now know that the WGTT get their rematch at the titles at Trick or Trouble, so if they win again, it will be attributed to skill.

Match #4
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
One night after losing the Cruiserweight Title, Frankie Kazarian wanted to prove something, saying he would wrestle anybody who thinks they can outwrestle him. That may have been a mistake as the man who signed that contract was "The Crippler" Chris Benoit. Kazarian seemed a bit nervous at first as Benoit is generally known as the best technical wrestler in the world, but Kazarian pulled his boots up and went right at Benoit. Though Kazarian is a great young prospect, going into this match most felt that Benoit would control the pace and get a fairly effortless victory. However, nobody told Kazarian that as he looked as spectacular as we have ever seen him. Kazarian gave the Rabid Wolverine everything he could handle and then a little more, and there were several times that it looked like the Future was going to put Benoit away. Benoit continually got his shoulder up though and fought through. What also impressed about Kazarian is not only what he did when he had the advantage, but the heart he showed to not let his shoulders get pinned was something to see. Benoit hit Kazarian with many of the moves that regularly put wrestlers away, such as the triple Germans and the swandive headbutt, but Kazarian refused to die. Benoit had Kazarian up on the top rope for a superplex, but Kazarian elbowed his way out of it, repositioned his body, and hit the Crippler with the Flux Capacitor! It looked like it would be enough, but Kazarian was too hurt to capitalize right away, so when he finally made the cover, Benoit had managed to recover enough to kick out. At this point, many of the fans were actually cheering on Kazarian because of his performance. The Future picked Benoit up and set up for the Wave of the Future, but Benoit got a burst of energy and countered with the Crippler Crossface. Kazarian held on as long as he possibly could, but he was trapped and had to tap out.

Chris Benoit made Frankie Kazarian submit to the Crippler Crossface in 0:12:09.
Rating: **** 1/4

What a fantastic match between the old veteran and the young lion. The crowd gave both of these men a well deserved standing ovation for their efforts. The look on Benoit's face after the match told it all - he knew he was fortunate to have come out of this match with a win. Benoit showed Kazarian a great deal of respect after the match by offering him a handshake. Kazarian was tentative at first, but with the urging of the crowd and Benoit telling him to "be a man," Kazarian shook his hand to a nice pop.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - "FALLEN ANGEL" CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
The guest on this week's Palumbo's Pizza Place was Christopher Daniels, and he had a lot to say in regards to CM Punk. Daniels let us all know that he is not with Punk by a long shot. Palumbo asked him what he thought now that the Prophecy was disbanded, and Daniels said he didn't trust it. "O'Haire and Goldust may be gone, but Punk always has a plan." Even still, Daniels is looking forward to a third big match that is already signed for next week, where Daniels and Punk will meet once again. Daniels concluded with a prophecy of its own, saying that it is guaranteed that Punk will suffer for his sins next week.

Match #5
Cruiserweight Title Match
"The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash (c) (w/ Lance Hoyt) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
Kid Kash surprised everyone 24 hours ago when, with the help of his new bodyguard Lance Hoyt, he defeated Frankie Kazarian to become the new Cruiserweight champion. He had no time to rest on his laurels though as the challengers are already starting to line up, beginning with perhaps the most challenging of all, Rey Mysterio Jr. Frankie Kazarian wasn't exactly sure how to deal with Lance Hoyt last night, but Mysterio was a bit more prepared and went right after Hoyt after the bell rang by jumping on him with a flying springboard seated senton. It managed to keep Hoyt off guard early and let Mysterio take the early lead in the contest, but Kash and Hoyt are very much on the same page, and Kash's distractions allowed Hoyt to smash Mysterio hard into the ring steps by throwing him into them like he was a rag doll. Mysterio kicked out when Kash made the cover after this, showing a tremendous amount of heart. Kash went to work after this with his vicious streak, hitting Mysterio with a double underhook power bomb and the Bank Roll, but it wasn't enough to put Mysterio out. Kash got frustrated and called Lance Hoyt up on the apron. Kash whipped Mysterio toward Hoyt, but Mysterio reversed it and sent Kash crashing into Hoyt. Hoyt fell hard to the apron while Mysterio dropkicked Kash in the back and set him up for the 6-1-9. Mysterio hit the far ropes and came back, but Hoyt was up, and with one arm he absorbed the brunt of the blow. Mysterio wasn't hurt, but he wasn't happy either as he yelled at Hoyt from inside the ring. Mysterio's lapse of attention allowed Kash to hit him from behind and hit the Dead Level to retain the Cruiserweight Title.

Kid Kash pinned Rey Mysterio Jr. with the Dead Level in 0:10:07.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Kid Kash retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

Another great match, and for the second night in a row, Lance Hoyt has paid huge dividends for the Cruiserweight champion. With Hoyt in his corner, it is going to be difficult to unthrone the Notorious K.I.D.

LOW-KI CONFRONTS ELIX SKIPPER
Low-Ki found his tag team partner Elix Skipper in the back and he made it clear from the get go that this wasn't a social call. Low-Ki told Skipper that he was getting a little sick and tired of Skipper's new attitude and that it was starting to distract the team. Skipper fired back and said that this new attitude was exactly what this team needed if they were ever going to be successful. Skipper told Low-Ki that he was tired of being a failure and that he was tired of not having the World Tag Team Titles. Ki retorted by saying he was getting a little tired of having to fight off AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson due to Primetime's big mouth. The situation was getting very tense, but that tension was broken when STYLES and DANIELSON came in again as they have in recent weeks and the fight was on! Officials had to rush in and break it up, but it becomes more apparent every week that this battle needs to be settled once and for all.

Match #6
Television Title Match
Matt Hardy (c) (w/ Mickie James) vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
Matt Hardy is now a two-time champion, but he had to defend right away as he put the title on the line against the man he defeated to win his first Television Title, CM Punk. We knew this was going to be interesting, as this was Punk's first match without the Prophecy. Punk didn't seem to mind being out there without the Prophecy; but then again, with as stoic as he generally is, who knows? Hardy was riding a ton of confidence after winning the TV Title from his biggest rival Edge, but one thing that had to be kept in mind is that there was no way that Hardy was going to be at 100% after the brutality and carnage that took place in the steel cage at Retribution. Hardy was sporting a large shiner on his right eye and Punk was doing his best to make that eye swell up again. Hardy refuses to lay down for anyone though, and he dished out just as much as he took, hitting Punk with all of his signature spots. This was turning into one helluva match until LITA found her way to the ring and starting messing with Mickie James on the floor. James is a firecracker for sure and it didn't take long before we had a CATFIGHT! It seemed like the only man in the building who didn't want to see this catfight go on was referee JD Sanders, who went to the floor to break it up. Meanwhile in the ring, Hardy nailed Punk with the Side Effect and went for the cover, but there was no referee. Hardy got up to figure out what was going on, and all that was going on was EDGE coming through the crowd, getting in the ring, and dropping Hardy with the Spear! Edge rolled out of the ring as Punk locked Hardy in the Anaconda Vice. Sanders caught eye of what was happening in the ring and returned. Hardy couldn't hold on, all things considered, and he had to submit.

CM Punk made Matt Hardy submit to the Anaconda Vice in 0:07:27.
Rating: **** 1/4
(CM Punk won the GCW Television Title.)

Matt Hardy's second title reign came to a screeching halt thanks to Edge! Edge and Lita went up the ramp smiling and laughing about what they just did as Hardy looked on pissed off.

LANCE STORM PLAYS THE BLAME GAME
Lance Storm and Anarchy came out for an interview to talk about what happened last night in the six-man tag team match. Storm was not taking the loss very well and expressed his frustrations in an intense way. Well, as intense as Storm gets anyway. The Calgary native then got serious for a minute and turned his aggressions toward Doug Williams and Paul Burchill, blaming them for the loss. Williams and Burchill did not like what they were hearing, but Storm didn't give them any time to protest as he told them to get out of the ring and that he didn't need their services anymore. Williams and Burchill looked at each other before leaving the ring. Storm turned his attention then to Monty Brown, saying that he wanted his North American Title back and he wasn't going to rest until the title was back around his waist. At this point, CHRIS JERICHO came out and he had a big time challenge to make. Jericho said that for as long as Lance Storm and he had been in the business together, Storm had been jealous of his success. "When you were winning tag titles in bingo halls, I was winning World Titles. You've never measured up to me, Lance. And you know what? I'm tired of it. There's not enough room in GCW for the both of us. You finally want to get the one-up on me? Here's your chance. My career versus your career. If you win, I will leave GCW and never come back. But if I win, you pack your bags and take your uncharismatic ass back to Calgary where it belongs!" Y2J was willing to put it all on the line to get Lance Storm out of his hair for good. Storm was reluctant at first, but after being egged on by Jericho, he finally agreed and we had ourselves an impromptu Loser-Leaves-Town match!

Match #7
Loser-Leaves-Town Match
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm
Jericho and Storm were putting their careers on the line to settle the score once and for all. It didn't get any bigger than this and the intensity in the building was electric. Every hit had a little something extra behind it as neither man was looking to have their career come to an end here. The match tried to remain a technical contest, but with the high stakes involved here, this quickly degenerated into a knock down, drag out fight. Both wrestlers threw caution to the wind. One thing that stood out in this match was that Jericho and Storm took to the air much more than normally, looking to connect with that big high risk move that would put this match in the books. When Storm realized that he was getting the short end of that stick, he refocused his energies on Y2J's leg, cutting him down with a chopblock. From there, a huge kneebreaker and a Sharpshooter helped to wear Jericho out, but he got to the ropes to keep this match going. Storm was looking for the superkick after that, but Jericho ducked it and hit Storm with the Breakdown to buy himself some time. Jericho and Storm both reached their feet at the same time, but Storm's punches were blocked and countered as Jericho got the ball rolling with a leg lariat. The Lionsault followed, but Storm got his shoulder up as the crowd counted along. Jericho called for the end as he rolled Storm over into the Walls of Jericho, but Storm would not give up. Storm's screams couldn't be heard as the crowd was loud as they were anticipating Lance Storm's permanent exit from GCW. Before Storm could tap out though, LITA was down at ringside. What in the world was she doing down here? Referee Antonio Santangelo went to get her away from the ring, but in doing so, he didn't see Storm tapping out in the ring. While Santangelo was still tied up with Lita, EDGE was in the ring and he had a chair with him. BLAM! The steel echoed off of Jericho's skull as he released the hold and fell to the mat. Edge slid out of the ring as Storm tried to get back to his feet. Y2J got to his feet, but he was essentially knocked out cold as Storm hit a Northern Lights suplex and secured the victory. Chris Jericho must now leave Global Championship Wrestling.

Loser-Leaves-Town Match:
Lance Storm pinned Chris Jericho after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:15:58.
Rating: *** 3/4

Lance Storm has cast Chris Jericho away from GCW, but not without controversy. Why would Edge and Lita be out here helping Storm? What wasn't a question is that Storm and Edge have formed an alliance as the two shook hands and hugged as they laughed about what they had done to Jericho. When Jericho came to, the reality of what happened set in. He knew he wasn't going to be back in Global Championship Wrestling anymore. He grabbed the microphone and gave the fans a quick thank you and goodbye as the fans returned the affection by giving the former World champion a standing ovation.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Abyss vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
Our main event had a new wrinkle to it from when it was originally signed as the winner of this match with Abyss and Eddie Guerrero would go on to meet John Bradshaw Layfield at Trick or Trouble, with the winner of that match becoming the top contender to the World Heavyweight championship. Guerrero, to all of his credit, showed absolutely no fear and was not intimidated in the very least at the immense stature of Abyss. Guerrero took a beating in this match, don't get me wrong, but he kept going right at Abyss from bell-to-bell and inflicted a lot of damage on the monster. Early in the match, JBL came out looking to cost Abyss the match, because anyone who knows their history knows that JBL wants no part of Abyss. JBL didn't make it very far though as Comissioner TOMMY DREAMER rushed out and cut him off, threatening him with suspension if JBL didn't turn around and stay out of this match. JBL left, but he didn't do it happily. The match continued in the ring, and Guerrero used the same strategy many have used against Abyss, and that is to chop him down, taking away his vertical base by working on the knees. Abyss has so much power though that even from his back he is dangerous. Guerrero would get a flurry of offense, and then Abyss would catch him in a slam of some sort. Eddie would recover with a short dropkick to the knee and go back to work, but again Abyss would catch Guerrero and punish him with a big power move like a powerslam or the torture rack drop. Guerrero finally got Abyss down on his back with a flying dropkick, so he looked to hit the Frog Splash. As he was on the top rope though, Abyss got up. Eddie noticed this in midair and rolled through the move with a somersault. But when he got back to his feet, he walked right into the Black Hole Slam and this one was over!

Abyss pinned Eddie Guerrero with the Black Hole Slam in 0:11:05.
Rating: *** 3/4

A great match, and a tremendous effort by Latino Heat, but Abyss was just too much for him as it will now be Abyss vs. John Bradshaw Layfield at Trick or Trouble. JBL came out right away to get the first strike in though as he hit an already tired Abyss with the Stock Market Crash to end the program.

Updated card for Trick or Trouble, October 16, 2005, from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois:

World Heavyweight Title - Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Kurt Angle

Number-One-Contenders Match - Abyss vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

World Tag Team Title Match - Eric Angle/Rob Van Dam (c) vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team
CardsFlyinHighPosted on 07/30/06 at 02:28:43

Good card, a nice follow up to your PPV.  Poor Matt Hardy, didn't even get a chance to get his name engraved on the belt yet. I want to see where Punk goes as the new champion and who steps up to challenge him as it seems Hardy has some other work to handle before going for a rematch
rey619Posted on 07/31/06 at 11:57:38

I'm a big fan of MNM, but I do hope you let them work their way up the tag-team rankings a while before you give them the title.

Excellent job with the Kazarian / Benoit match. Kazarian gained a lot more momentum than Benoit lost (if he lost anything at all). This is the way to get the young ones over, splendid work.

Matt Hardy pulls a Kane, holding the title for 24 hours. Nice to see Punk hold the title again, even if it means another chapter in the Hardy/Edge saga.

Loser-leaves town match on a tv-show? Well, I would have liked it more on a PPV. Anyway, should be interesting to see what the new Canadian duo can achieve. Jericho leaving was a given anyway, knowing you adhere to real-life stuff such as Y2J quitting and Eddie dying.

Abyss gets another match at JBL... I actually think Abyss may be able to pull off the victory. A Lesnar vs Abyss match sounds rather good to me.
Snabbit888Posted on 07/31/06 at 12:06:58

MNM is going to be working their way up, don't worry.  They're really good and I don't want to rush them.  I intend for them to be huge tag stars in GCW, no doubt.

I am very happy with Kazarian's face turn.  I didn't really plan it until I held this match, and it just kind of came to me.  I'm happy with how it's gone so far.

I tried to mimic Jericho's leaving as best as possible, as he did leave on WWE TV as well.  Jericho had a good run in GCW, but he was really hard to write for me for some reason.  One less problem. :)
