[GCW] Retribution - 9/18/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/29/06 at 10:16:13

Pre-Game Show Match
Tag Team Turmoil
Participants: The Basham Brothers, Hardcore Holly/"The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane, Shark Boy/D-Ray 3000, MNM, Sean O'Haire/Goldust, Booker T/Rey Mysterio Jr., "Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki, "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson
Before our pay-per-view event, we had what was a huge opportunity for eight teams in GCW as we had Tag Team Turmoil. This match worked like a battle royal, but if you were eliminated, your partner was eliminated as well, with the winner earning a World Tag Team Title shot in the future. Much of this match focused around the much ballyhooed debut of MNM - Joey Mercury, Johnny Nitro, with manager Melina, and their entrance complete with red carpet and photographers drew a lot of contempt from the other teams in the ring. MNM was targeted early on, but they manage to hold on and showed a great amount of teamwork. The former two-time World Tag Team champions had a disappointing night as Booker T managed to get the better of Doug Basham to take the Bashams out of contention. However, Booker's time in the ring was numbered as MNM showed they were for real by dumping Booker out, taking Rey Mysterio Jr. with him. This would be just the start of a good night for MNM, as after AJ Styles took care of Goldust and eliminated the Prophecy's contingent in the process, MNM took control of the match and using astounding teamwork and frequent interjections from Melina, MNM made their first appearance in Global Championship Wrestling highly rememberable as they won Tag Team Turmoil, lastly eliminating Low-Ki after hitting him with their tag team finisher they call the Snapshot.

[Tag Team Turmoil]: 16-Man Tag Team Battle Royal:
MNM won an 8-team Battle Royal:
x Booker threw out Doug Basham (partner: Danny Basham) in 0:01:54
x J. Mercury threw out Booker (partner: Rey Mysterio Jr.) in 0:03:05
x Styles threw out Goldust (partner: Sean O'Haire) in 0:07:56
x Nitro threw out H. Holly (partner: Ken Doane) in 0:09:19
x Nitro threw out Styles (partner: Bryan Danielson) in 0:14:00
x Nitro threw out D-Ray (partner: Shark Boy) in 0:14:47
x J. Mercury threw out Low-Ki (partner: Elix Skipper) in 0:18:28
Rating: *** 1/2

After the match, the paparazzi came back and took more pictures of MNM, who after their debut have certainly lived up to the hype. Elix Skipper was berating Low-Ki after the match, completely belittling him in front of the packed house in the Hartford Civic Center because he "blew it" as Skipper was putting it. Nothing came of it tonight, but MNM couldn't say the same as there were two men that were not happy to see MNM win, and that was HARDCORE HOLLY and KEN DOANE, who had suffered an attack from MNM just six days ago. Holly and Doane came out, jumping Nitro and Mercury from behind. Melina screamed and got her men out of there, but it's apparent that the brash attitudes of MNM are going to make them a lot more enemies than friends.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut! We are SOLD OUT and once again live on pay-per-view! Tonight, it is Retribution! Eight huge matches on the card, none bigger than our main event as in the first singles rematch from the stellar main event from Super Cade II, Brock Lesnar defends the World Heavyweight Title against Kurt Angle! That won't be the only title on the lines as "The Rated R Superstar" Edge defends the Television Title against Matt Hardy in a solid steel cage, and Frankie Kazarian defends the Cruiserweight Title against Kid Kash, who promises to have backup. Not only that, but we will see "The Hardcore Legend" Mick Foley wrestle for the first time ever in a GCW ring as he takes on "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero in a hardcore rules match! All that and a whole lot more!

Match #1
Cage Match for the Television Title
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. Matt Hardy (w/ Mickie James)
The history between Edge and Matt Hardy is well documented, but the animosity between the two was about to reach new heights as the pay-per-view broadcast began with the steel cage match for the Television Title. The only way to win this match was by pinfall or submission, which is fine because these two would rather beat the holy hell out of each other than escape anyway. Lita and Mickie James were both at ringside, but their wariness for each other and the cage kept them as primarily spectators for this battle. The match itself was one of the more brutal matches I have ever seen. It didn't take long before both the Rated R Superstar and Matt Hardy were wearing the crimson mask. Both men took full advantage of the cage as well, using it as a weapon in all kinds of ways. After each competitor had suffered a lot of damage, Edge seemed to be pulling away when he backdropped Hardy into the cage. Lita started toward the door after being beckoned by Edge to hand him something, but Mickie James wouldn't stand for that as she attacked him on the floor and we had a CATFIGHT! Lita and Mickie wrestled around on the floor, much to the chagrin of Edge. He refocused though when he saw Hardy standing up on the ring apron. Edge tried to Spear Hardy into the cage, but Hardy moved out of the way and the Rated R Superstar connected with nothing but the cage! Edge fell back into the ring and hit the mat and looked to be out of it. Hardy began to climb the cage as the buzz in the crowd started to build. Hardy made it to the top and turned around, and jumped onto Edge with a flying legdrop! The crowd chanted, "HOLY SHIT!" as both men were completely wiped out. Hardy finally crawled over to make the cover, but Edge somehow got his shoulder up at 2 and a half! Edge used the last bit of energy he had, as just after that Hardy hit the Twist of Fate to become the new Television champion!

Cage Match:
Matt Hardy pinned Edge with the Twist Of Fate in 0:15:57.
Rating: ****
(Matt Hardy won the GCW Television Title.)

What an insane contest as for the second time, Matt Hardy is the Television champion. He didn't have much left in him to celebrate though, but the high energy of Mickie James made up for it as she grabbed the TV Title and brought it to her boyfriend. The crowd gave Matt Hardy (and Edge alike) a standing ovation for how brutal this match was. Kudos to both men, but especially to the new TV champ!

Match #2
"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam (w/ Eric Angle) vs. Shelton Benjamin (w/ Charlie Haas)
Rob Van Dam has been waiting for this chance for over a year now. It was back on July 26th of last year that RVD suffered a severe neck injury in a match against Shelton Benjamin that required him to get neck fusion surgery that put him out of commission until he made his return at Summer Sizzler as the partner of Eric Angle. Angle and he became the World Tag Team champions that night, but what RVD has been wanting is his chance at retribution one-on-one against Benjamin. Benjamin was anything but excited to take on this match, but Commissioner Tommy Dreamer refused the World's Greatest Tag Team their World Tag Team Title rematch until he did. The match was on, and what a fast-paced contest it was. RVD came out firing on all cylinders while Benjamin was doing his very best to stay far enough away from RVD to avoid being kicked in the head. Benjamin is a superior athlete though, and his pure athleticism allowed him to get back in this match with a springboard clothesline and the Dragon Whip which got him nearfalls. RVD looked to be in a bad way, but he fought back and hit a stepover spin kick to get back on the offensive. RVD hit the Rolling Thunder and split-legged moonsault for nearfalls, and went up top for the Five Star Frog Splash, but Charlie Haas came over toward him and jumped on the apron. Eric Angle pulled Haas down and they began fighting at ringside, but this bought Benjamin enough time that he could get his legs up when RVD went for his finisher. Benjamin grabbed RVD's legs and using a jack-knife pin, took the victory.

Shelton Benjamin pinned Rob Van Dam after a jack-knife pin in 0:07:23.
Rating: *** 1/2

RVD's quest for retribution has hit a major speed bump as Shelton Benjamin stole a victory from him. We know now that the World's Greatest Tag Team get their rematch next month at the Trick or Trouble pay-per-view, but RVD and Eric Angle are going to be that much more fired up after the way this match went down.

KID KASH INTRODUCES HIS BACKUP
The Cruiserweight Title match was next, but before it began, Kid Kash got on the microphone and introduced the man who attacked Frankie Kazarian six days ago and who would have his back from now on. The man's name is Lance Hoyt, and he is definitely an imposing figure. Kash guaranteed that nobody would mess with him anymore now that he has Hoyt watching his back, and taking one look at Hoyt, he very well may be right. Frankie Kazarian came out after this and looked less than impressed with Kash and Hoyt, but that may be his cocky attitude rather than a legitimate non-concern.

Match #3
Cruiserweight Title Match
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash (w/ Lance Hoyt)
With Lance Hoyt at ringside, Kid Kash's confidence level shot through the roof, but Frankie Kazarian wasn't just going to roll over and let Kash take this match. Kazarian is a wonderful technical wrestler, and he used those skills to take care of Kash early on. However, Kash took the advantage back with a short dropkick and tossed the Future out to the floor. Kash bought himself a bit of time by distracting the referee, which allowed the massive Hoyt to flatten Kazarian with a big boot on the outside. Hoyt then scooped Kazarian up and drove his spine into the ring post. Hoyt tossed Kazarian back into the ring, but the Future just couldn't get himself back into the contest. Moments later, Kash nailed the Deal Level brain buster and we had ourselves a new Cruiserweight champion!

Kid Kash pinned Frankie Kazarian with the Dead Level in 0:04:30.
Rating: *** 1/4
(Kid Kash won the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

For the second time tonight, we had a new champion as Kid Kash is now carrying Cruiserweight gold. Kash was irritating enough before, but with Lance Hoyt and the Cruiserweight Title in tow, his annoyance level is going to reach new heights.

Match #4
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels vs. CM Punk (w/ Daffney)
As seems to be the theme for the night, this match was about retribution. Christopher Daniels used to be one of the lead followers of CM Punk and did all of his bidding without question, but when he became injured, Punk abandoned him, forced him to put the Television Title up for grabs against him, and then put him out for additional months. Daniels returned to get a small measure of revenge by costing him his match against Monty Brown for the North American Title. The hatred these two have for each other was highly apparent as these two tore into each other like rabid dogs. Each man seemed more interested in causing their opponent the maximum amount of damage possible rather than taking the win. That's why it was no surprise when a steel chair made its way into the ring when Daffney handed it to Punk. Punk took a huge swing at Daniels, but the Fallen Angel ducked, booted Punk in the gut, and took the chair. He had intentions to nail Punk, but SEAN O'HAIRE and GOLDUST ran down and jumped on the ring apron. They didn't get to do much though as Daniels nailed both of them with the chair. The distraction worked well enough though as Punk hit Daniels with a low blow, grabbed the chair, and wrapped it around his skull, causing the disqualification.

Christopher Daniels defeated CM Punk by disqualification in 0:07:02.
Rating: **** 1/4

The blood poured out of Daniels' head as he was down and out. O'Haire and Goldust jumped in the ring to help, but shockingly Punk cracked both of them with the chair! Punk left the ring with Daffney in utter disgust, leaving all three men lying unconscious. We hope to get more information on why Punk did what he did tomorrow night on Explosion.

FOLEY EXPLAINS WHAT HE'S GOING TO LATINO HEAT
Mick Foley joined us backstage for an interview, and this one was a classic. Foley started by talking about how when he retired from wrestling a few years back, he intended on it being permanent. He wrestled in such a way that it took years off of his career and probably off of his life, but he loved every second of it. When he agreed to be the special referee at Super Cade, that was going to be it, but Eddie Guerrero has made this situation personal. Foley hasn't wrestled a match in years, but he said that hardcore isn't something you forget. He gave Eddie all kinds of credit for being one of the best in the world, but noted that Guerrero was in a world that he was unfamiliar with and that he was going to rue the day that he ever brought Mick Foley back.

Match #5
Abyss vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
After two failed attempts at taking the World Heavyweight Title at both Chaos Reigns in a singles match and in the Elimination Chamber at Summer Sizzler, Randy Orton retooled and refocused on what he wants to do with his career. He started that transformation the night after Summer Sizzler, wrapping a chair around the throat of The Hurricane and stomping on it from the second turnbuckle. Though this did make a huge statement, one man who wasn't happy to see The Hurricane leave in such a way was Abyss, who has been after him ever since. Orton knew that he wasn't going to win this match by going toe-to-toe with the monster, so he came in with the idea to chop the big tree down because they're all the same size if they're on the mat. The crowd got on Orton's case because he spent much of the time he had the advantage working over Abyss' legs with various leglocks, but when you're in the ring with a monster, you don't care much what the crowd thinks of your strategy if it's working. Problem is, he wasn't going to make Abyss submit, so he needed to hit a big move to try to get the pin. That involved letting Abyss get a vertical base though, which is where this match fell apart for Orton. Abyss reversed an irish whip attempt and caught Orton with a sidewalk slam out of the corner. He followed up by hitting the torture rack drop, but he missed an attempt at a big splash. Orton got up and positioned himself for the R.K.O., but when he attempted it, Abyss shoved him into the ropes. Orton bounced back, but right into the Black Hole Slam. Good morning, good afternoon, good night.

Abyss pinned Randy Orton with the Black Hole Slam in 0:12:52.
Rating: ** 3/4

A valiant effort by young Randy, but Abyss is too much of a monster. Cowboy Bob jumped in the ring to check on his son, but he also jumped right into the fire as Abyss nailed him with a huge boot to the face. Abyss went to the floor and slid a table into the ring, setting it up right in the middle. Randy was up by this point and went for another R.K.O., but this time Abyss rode with it, scooped Orton up, and dumped him over the top to the floor. He turned his attention back to the elder Orton, hoisting him up and power bombing him right through the table! The medical staff came down to check on him, but it will be a long time before we hear from Cowboy Bob again.

JBL WANTS A WORLD TITLE SHOT
Mario Riviera was standing by with John Bradshaw Layfield, and (surprise, surprise) he was not in a good mood. JBL said that he was insulted that he did not have a match on the pay-per-view tonight. "I am a Wrestling God... I should be in the main event of every show that GCW holds." At that point, JBL said that he doesn't care if it's Brock Lesnar or if it's Kurt Angle that wins tonight, he wants a shot at the World Title. At this point, Angle joined him and after a tense moment, apologized to JBL for the bad vibes that have developed between them in recent weeks. Angle then said he wanted a little help from JBL. When JBL inquired as to why he should help Angle, Angle told him, "If you can help me win the World Title, I have a REALLY GOOD feeling that one John Bradshaw Layfield might be in line for a World Title shot." After a tense moment, JBL's smile grew and the two shook hands. This doesn't bode well for Brock Lesnar tonight.

Match #6
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion)/"Y2J" Chris Jericho/"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Lance Storm/Anarchy
This match was originally scheduled to be Monty Brown defending the North American Title against Lance Storm, but due to the actions of Lance Storm and Anarchy, Commissioner Tommy Dreamer made it a six-man tag team match instead. Brown teamed up with Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit, a pair of former World champions. This match didn't have a lot of structure to it as neither team could get any footing. This match became about the individual talents of the competitors, and it was the last man added to the match that would make the difference. Benoit and Storm were engaging in a great technical wrestling battle, that resulted in a lot of counter wrestling. Storm seemed to have it in hand though when he went for a piledriver, but the Crippler had the presence of mind to reverse it into a small package that caught Storm by surprise just enough to put him away.

Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho and Monty Brown defeated Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) and Lance Storm when Benoit pinned L. Storm after a small package in 0:07:12.
Rating: ** 1/2

Benoit, Jericho, and Brown all celebrated their victory while Storm was livid in the ring. Despite it being his mistake, Storm chewed out Doug Williams and Paul Burchill before heading to the back in disgust. I'm fairly certain this is not the way that Lance Storm originally planned on his night going.

Match #7
Hardcore Match
"The Hardcore Legend" Mick Foley vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
We knew going into this one that this hardcore match was going to be something brutal, but we could have never guessed it would have went as far as it did. Both men had something to prove, and prove it they did. The match didn't start out hardcore at all as Foley and Guerrero got into a bit of a wrestling match, with Foley having a little fun at Guerrero's expense. Eddie soon tired of that though, and here came the hardcore. Foley and Eddie wrestled all over the arena, spending almost as much time in the stands as they did in the ring. Eddie made great use out of a steel chair in this match, scrambling the Hardcore Legend's brains with it on more than one occasion. Foley knows how to use weapons as good as anybody, and he certainly came prepared as he had preplaced a barbed wire baseball bat under the ring. Eddie took the bat to the skull, busting him wide open as it stuck to him and ripped his skin as Foley pulled it out. Eddie wouldn't allow himself to be pinned though, and got back the advantage with a well-placed kick to the groin. Latino Heat then DDT'ed Foley onto the barbed wire bat, but he only got a two count. Guerrero kicked the match into overdrive at this point, grabbing the chair and going up to the top, looking to hit a chair-aided Frog Splash, but Foley missed and Eddie smashed his face into the chair. Foley went to the outside and reached under the ring where he had hidden a bag of thumb tacks which he brought back into the ring and started to scatter around the ring. Foley locked Guerrero up for the Double-Arm DDT, but he didn't notice that Guerrero had grabbed the barbed wire baseball bat, which he used to hit Foley with a low blow. Guerrero quickly grabbed Foley and suplexed him over directly into the tacks! Foley's back looked like a pin cushion as Guerrero sadistically looked to go up top. Seconds later, Eddie jumped off with the Frog Splash, driving Foley even further into the tacks, burying some into his own hands and forearms in the process. Guerrero made the cover and this one was over.

Hardcore Match:
Eddie Guerrero pinned Mick Foley with the Frog Splash in 0:17:59.
Rating: **** 1/4

Guerrero looked like he had seen a ghost as he surveyed the carnage that just happened, pulling tacks out of his hands as he made his way to the ring. You don't have to like the guy, but Eddie Guerrero showed that he is one of the toughest guys in the business by going the distance with Mick Foley in a hardcore environment and pulling out the win.

BROCK LESNAR IS ASKED ABOUT THE MAIN EVENT
Before our main event, Mario Riviera stopped Brock Lesnar and asked him if he was at all concerned about the alliance that was made earlier between Kurt Angle and John Bradshaw Layfield. Lesnar said that he doesn't have time to be concerned because he's too busy being the World Heavyweight champion and if he worried about every plot that was formulated against him, he wouldn't have time to sleep. Lesnar said that he doesn't care what the odds are, he is going to walk out of Hartford as the World Heavyweight champion.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Kurt Angle
Our main event was a highly anticipated one as we had a rematch from the five star classic main event from Super Cade II, but this time it was Brock Lesnar defending the World Heavyweight Title against Kurt Angle. Kurt Angle had a new level of confidence going into this match after striking a deal with John Bradshaw Layfield earlier in the night. It didn't take long for JBL to make his presence felt down at ringside. JBL didn't get himself physically involved for awhile, but he and Angle began working in tandem as Angle would occupy referee Jimmy Appleseed's attention and JBL would nail Lesnar with cheap shots. Lesnar has a knack for overcoming the odds though and he fought through it and kept himself in this match with his rare breed of technical ability and power. The match became highly controversial later though when Jimmy Appleseed became sandwiched in the corner after Angle irish whipped Lesnar. JBL took this opportunity to jump in the ring and behead the Monster From Minnesota with the Stock Market Crash, but there was no referee to make the count. Finally Antonio Santangelo ran in and made the cover, but Lesnar got his shoulder up just in the nick of time. Angle could not believe it as he grabbed Santangelo and clotheslined him hard to the mat, so now we had two referees down and out. JBL was back in the ring as he and Angle whipped Lesnar into the ropes, but the champion ducked a double clothesline attempt and mowed through both Angle and Lesnar with a double clothesline of his own. Lesnar caught JBL and took him over with an overhead belly-to-belly suplex that sent JBL sprawling from the ring. Lesnar then grabbed Angle and hit a German suplex, and both refs were counting... one... two... three! But wait a minute... Santangelo is raising Angle's hand! What in the world? Jimmy Appleseed comes over and takes he World Heavyweight Title away from Angle and is now raising Lesnar's hand! What is going on here? The referees continue to argue back and forth over whose shoulders were down, and replays are showing that both Angle and Lesnar had their shoulders down. Commissioner Tommy Dreamer came down to the ring and talked to both referees before heading over to ring announcer William Buck. Buck announced that both men's shoulders were down, and therefore this match was a draw.

Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar battled to a double pin in 0:25:10.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

The crowd voiced their disapproval that this match ended in the way it did, but those boos turned to cheers when it was announced that Brock Lesnar was still the World Heavyweight champion. Both Kurt Angle and JBL were livid over the decision, but Dreamer said that it was final. What a controversial way to end the pay-per-view. We hope to have this whole situation cleared up tomorrow night at Explosion, which will be from the Fleet Center in Boston, Massachusetts! Good night everybody!
dabirdmanPosted on 07/29/06 at 10:55:16

Ok whats the word I'm looking for.........Awesome...no Spectacular...na......oh Hell this was a great PPV

Edge and kazarian both losing the titles, MNM doing what they do best, Kickin ass and takin names, Foley getting his ass handed to him is always a classic and the ever classic double pin. Who pinned who? The Draw had me kicking my computer screen as I was Oh so pulling for Angle but hey I see a rematch comming. Does this mean JBL has paid his debt to Angle? Does JBL get his title shot? Maybe a 3 way ladder match for the title? I guess I'll have to wait and see :)

Great show

rey619Posted on 07/31/06 at 10:30:26

Never pictured Hardy winning back the TV-title, a nice surprise IMO. Nowadays, everyone is supposed to hold titles for a long time, good to see short reigns now and then as well.

Hmm.. another short title reign comes to an end in a way too short match. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see if you can fit Hoyt into GCW, or if he'll stay in a bodyguard role.

Surprised you let Abyss have the win. You're all in all being very unpredictable here, which of course is a good thing.

Not too thrilled about the six-man tag.. it just seemed short for a six-man tag ending in a small package like that.

Great main-event, the double pin keeps Angle in the title picture, we'll probably see a 3-way at Trick & Trouble.

Well-written show as usual, some of your undercard matches could perhaps have gone a little longer.
Snabbit888Posted on 07/31/06 at 10:37:01

Yeah, I agree.  Some of the matches were shorter than I had hoped.  The show didn't necessarily come across as I wanted, but it's one of my "lesser" pay-per-views, so I could move stories along like Lesnar/Angle, the tag title situation, Hardy/Edge, etc.

Thanks for the comments.  Booya.
