[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 10/3/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/30/06 at 09:11:29

For the first time ever, GCW was in the great state of Maine as the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland served as host for Monday Night Explosion! On tonight's show, Kurt Angle announces what stipulations he wants for the World Heavyweight Title match against Brock Lesnar at Trick or Trouble! Also, Kid Kash defends the Cruiserweight Title against Petey Williams, CM Punk defends the Television Title against Frankie Kazarian, Matt Hardy and Lance Storm go one-on-one, the North American champion Monty Brown fights Edge in a non-title match, and in our huge main event, World champion Brock Lesnar teams with Abyss to take on Kurt Angle and John Bradshaw Layfield! What a night this ought to be!

KURT ANGLE MAKES HIS STIPULATION CHOICE
The show kicked off with the two competitors in the main event for Trick or Trouble, World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle, standing in the ring with GCW Commissioner Tommy Dreamer. Lesnar looked less than happy while you couldn't chisel the smile off of Angle's face after his team won the elimination match last week and thus he gets to choose the stipulations for the title match at the pay-per-view. Angle was all set to announce what his stips were going to be, but Lesnar snatched away the microphone before he had the chance. Lesnar made comments about how confident Angle looked since he got to pick what kind of match it would be, but he assured Angle that no matter what the match was, he would be walking out of Chicago with the World Heavyweight Title firmly around his waist. Angle told Lesnar not to be so sure of that. The former champion put Lesnar over, talking about how he has been a high quality champion and that he is as tough as they come, but that no one was tougher than him. "Need I remind you that I won the Olympic gold medal with a broken neck! Even when the odds are against me, I never give up. Not for you, not for anyone. I will never quit, so that's why the stipulations I want are for an I Quit match at Trick or Trouble!" The crowd popped huge for this, as they didn't exactly expect Angle to be so ballsy with his match selection. Even the Monster From Minnesota was a little taken aback by Angle's bravado, but told Angle he looked forward to it. Angle responded by telling Lesnar that one thing he would never do is say, "I Quit" and that he was going to be the 3-time World Heavyweight champion. Dreamer concluded the segment by saying that in preparation for the Trick or Trouble match, next week Lesnar and Angle both will participate in Pick Your Poison matches. Lesnar will get to select Angle's opponent while conversely, Angle will get to select Lesnar's opponent.

Match #1
Cruiserweight Title Match
"The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash (c) (w/ Lance Hoyt) vs. Petey Williams
Kid Kash has been riding a huge wave of confidence ever since he brought in Lance Hoyt to watch his back, saying he would fight anyone this week and put his Cruiserweight Title on the line. His confidence may have been too soon though as he had to defend against the ever-close but not quite a champion, Petey Williams. Petey's attention was solely on Kash and the Cruiserweight Title, which was what he had to do if he had any hopes of winning this match. Unfortunately, Petey couldn't keep this focus going throughout the match, because any time he would have the advantage, Hoyt would get closer and closer to the ring. Though Hoyt never physically interjected himself in the match, once again his presence served to be a distraction as Kash would put this one away via the Dead Level.

Kid Kash pinned Petey Williams with the Dead Level in 0:06:04.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Kid Kash retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

Another successful title defense for Kid Kash. A good effort by Petey Williams, but this simply wasn't his night.

LOW-KI LETS HIS FRUSTRATIONS WITH ELIX SKIPPER BE KNOWN AGAIN
As seems to be a trend these days, Low-Ki's frustrations with his free-thinking tag team partner Elix Skipper continue to grow, and Ki isn't at all bashful about calling Primetime on them. This week Ki was pissed off over the fact that he wasn't consulted at all before Skipper challenged AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson to a steel cage match at Trick or Trouble. "I'll take on anyone anywhere, and you know that, but a little heads up wouldn't hurt!" Skipper told Ki that he knows how much of a bad ass he is and that Low-Ki can beat anyone under any circumstances, which is why he has them signed for a tag team match against Anarchy, and it is next. Ki was highly pissed off about this, but Skipper patted him on the back and said they would be fine as he left toward the ring, leaving Ki shaking his head.

Match #2
"Primetime" Elix Skipper/Low-Ki vs. Anarchy
The British duo of Doug Williams and Paul Burchill have brought an aggressive and unique style to tag team wrestling here in Global Championship Wrestling, but this would be a test for them as they took on the former World Tag Team champions. Despite Skipper's somehow seemingly false enthusiasm for this match, Low-Ki was not completely onboard and seemed a little underprepared for this match, and with good reason since he found out about it only minutes before the bell rang. Low-Ki is too talented of a wrestler though to let that completely throw him off as he was still in this match, throwing hard kicks at Williams and Burchill whenever he could. He and Skipper were competitive, but with all of the communication issues they have been having, they're simply not the same team they were a year ago when they were holding championship gold. After a teaming mess at the end, Low-Ki got caught by a German suplex from Doug Williams. Williams then hoisted Ki up in a squat position so that Ki's body was horizontal and elevated, which was followed up by Burchill jumping on Ki with a flying legdrop, a move that they call the Guillotine. Good night, Low-Ki.

Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) defeated Elix Skipper and Low-Ki when Burchill pinned Low-Ki after the the Guillotine in 0:06:53.
Rating: ****

An impressive victory for Anarchy and an equally unimpressive fall apart there for Elix Skipper and Low-Ki. They are really going to have to get on the same page if they want to have any shot at surviving the cage at Trick or Trouble.

Match #3
Matt Hardy (w/ Mickie James) vs. Lance Storm
This was a solid match, if not a little on the short side. If these two wrestled a long competitive match, I have no doubts that they would tear the house down. However, Lance Storm's intention wasn't to tear down the house. His intention was to sneak out a victory as quickly as possible to avoid the risk of an injury before his shot to regain the North American Title on October 16th. Hardy's been known in his career though for throwing caution to the wind, so he was ready to do what it took to get the win. After some great wrestling exchanges, Hardy went for a rana, but Hardy couldn't get all the way over before Storm sat down, grabbed the ropes, and stole a win.

Lance Storm pinned Matt Hardy after a sitdown in 0:03:07.
Rating: ** 3/4

Matt Hardy argued with referee JD Sanders, but the decision was final as Storm bailed, heading to the back and pointing to his head. We cut to commercial with Hardy looking mighty frustrated over what just transpired.

CM PUNK LAYS OUT A CHALLENGE FOR CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
Before CM Punk's Television Title defense against Frankie "The Future" Kazarian, he, flanked by the Bashams, Shaniqua, and Daffney, grabbed the microphone and said that at Trick or Trouble, he wanted to put Christopher Daniels out of wrestling for good. He called Daniels out and when the Fallen Angel arrived, Punk told Daniels that it wasn't in their control anymore and that the elimination of Daniels was written long ago. Punk was so sure that Daniels elimination was imminent that he was going to allow the Fallen Angel to select the type of match. Daniels had one in mind, and responded with only three words: "Dog Collar Match." Though Punk's entourage seemed concerned to hear this, Punk just stared blankly at Daniels before the Fallen Angel headed to the back and the TV Title match was underway.

Match #4
Television Title Match
CM Punk (w/ the Bashams, Shaniqua, & Daffney) vs. Frankie "The Future" Kazarian
CM Punk had a very successful Television Title reign earlier in the year before losing it to Matt Hardy, but he recently regained the title from Matt Hardy a couple of weeks ago. He had a tough test tonight though against Frankie Kazarian, who has really stepped up his game since losing the Cruiserweight Title. Kazarian would love to add the Television Title to his list of accolades, and he had as good an opportunity as ever tonight. Early in the match, Punk dumped Kazarian to the floor where he was jumped by the Bashams, but Jimmy Appleseed made a judgment, and dare I say good call, by not calling for the disqualification but instead, sending the Bashams to the back. The match continued from there, and this was a great match that the fans really got into. GCW fans really hate CM Punk and with the endorsement of Chris Benoit and the wrestling he has been doing, fans have really started to jump onboard the Future bandwagon. The action went back and forth, both men clawing tooth and nail to establish dominance over the other, putting their bodies completely on the line for the coveted TV Title. By the end of this match, the crowd was on its feet chanting along with every nearfall. Kazarian got a nearfall with a slingshot DDT. Punk got the advantage back with a nearfall following a Shining Wizard. Kazarian cut off Punk's momentum with a snap belly-to-belly suplex and had Punk ready for the Wave of the Future, but Punk struck like a cobra and brought the Future to the mat, and locked on the Anaconda Vice. Kazarian desperately tried to get out of the hold, but the more he struggled, the worse off he became as Punk clinched on tighter and tighter until Kazarian had no choice but to tap out.

CM Punk made Frankie Kazarian submit to the Anaconda Vice in 0:14:27.
Rating: *** 1/2
(CM Punk retained the GCW Television Title.)

What a tremendous hard fought battle and it was a shame that only one man who walk away as the winner after this one. As Kazarian got himself to his feet, the fans in Portland gave him a wonderful round of applause for his efforts.

Match #5
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Rhyno
Before this match began, announcers Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner let it be known that GCW officials have signed one more match for Trick or Trouble to round out the card, and it will be Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero. These two have put on classics for years all around the world, and they are sure to duplicate here in GCW. Benoit first had to handle Rhyno, which is no easy task. Rhyno's win-loss record may not be stunning, but one thing that is for sure is that anyone who has wrestled him has left the match bruised and battered. The same would be the case tonight, as the Rabid Wolverine would take a beating like few can take. Rhyno had the certain power advantage, and to say Rhyno is anything other than a power wrestler would be an inaccurate statement. Benoit took slam after slam and power bomb after power bomb, but he refused to keep his shoulders on the mat for the three. Benoit used his technical prowess to counter Rhyno and stay in the match, eventually catching the Manbeast with a Northern Lights suplex that was so beautifully executed that it was enough for the pin.

Chris Benoit pinned Rhyno after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:07:27.
Rating: *** 1/4

Chris Benoit needed every trick he had to survive Rhyno's onslaught, but in the end experience prevailed as Benoit pulled one out. At this point, EDDIE GUERRERO tried to get the one up on the Crippler before their PPV encounter, but Benoit saw it coming and sent Guerrero flying over the top to the floor. Guerrero tried to get back into the ring, but Benoit nailed him with a running back elbow to knock him back to the floor. At this point, the GCW Official Brigade came in to prevent anymore of an altercation.

RANDY ORTON UNVEILS HIS NEW ATTITUDE
When we came back from a commercial break, we were joined backstage by Randy Orton, a week removed from the unexpected brutal attack perpetrated on Matt Hardy (which we saw a replay of including Orton smearing Hardy's blood on his own chest). Orton said that he was tired of the murmurs backstage that he was soft and nothing more than a pretty boy. He reminded everybody that he is the brightest superstar of the 21st century, bringing up the fact that he is a two-time North American champion. Orton said that it was time that he started making his own opportunities instead of waiting for them to be handed to him, and that he didn't care who got hurt along the way. He talked about being the top dog in GCW as his "destiny" and that his plans go into action very soon.

Match #6
Non-Title Match
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion) vs. "The Rated R Superstar" Edge (w/ Lita)
Earlier in the evening, Monty Brown's opponent at Trick or Trouble, Lance Storm, was successful in a match against Edge's opponent at Trick or Trouble, Matt Hardy. They then went at it in this match, and it was a good one. Brown's North American Title reign has been going on for nearly a year now, the longest reign of any kind in GCW's short history. Storm wants that title, and you knew his partner-in-crime Edge was going to do what he could to weaken the Alpha Male prior to October 16th. Edge however has his own concerns at the pay-per-view when he puts his career on the line against Matt Hardy's career. You could tell that Edge's mind was on that more than it was on the North American champion, who in a good match, put Edge down clean after hitting the Pounce.

Monty Brown pinned Edge with the Pounce in 0:08:03.
Rating: **** 1/4

Brown keeps pace with Lance Storm with this victory while Edge, much like Hardy earlier, will have to find away to bounce back from this loss. We know that next week we will have a tag team match pitting these four men against each other which will go a long way to determine what may happen at Trick or Trouble.

MNM INTRODUCE THEMSELVES TO THE WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS
The World Tag Team champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, are seen backstage talking when Melina, Johnny Nitro, and Joey Mercury, collectively known as MNM, come into the picture. Angle and RVD smile in stride as Melina runs them down, telling them not to get too comfortable with those tag team titles, "because if the World's Greatest Tag Team doesn't take them from you, we will." MNM left as quickly as they had arrived. Angle and RVD stared at each other for a bit before RVD said, "Those guys really need to chill out," to which Angle responded, "Oh yeah," before they carried on with their business.

Match #7
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Abyss vs. Kurt Angle/John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
Absolutely HUGE main event to cap off our Maine Explosion as Brock Lesnar and Abyss teamed up against Kurt Angle and John Bradshaw Layfield. The atmosphere in the building was intense as these four titans met in the ring. Considering Lesnar and Abyss have never teamed up before save last week's elimination match, they worked surprisingly well as a team (double shocking considering Abyss can't even speak). This match was a great main event and set the stage for the top two matches at the pay-per-view. For the first time in the history of their feud, JBL actually had the guts to go at it with Abyss... sort of. When Angle would wrestle the advantage over the monster, JBL would tag himself in and put a licking on Abyss. However when Abyss would turn the tide, JBL would either bail or tag Angle back in. Another thing we saw was a great preview of the I Quit match between Lesnar and Angle. It was like watching a chess match, seeing Lesnar and Angle lock each other in submission holds and watching each man do all they could not to submit despite the immense amount of pain they were in. The tempers started flaring though and the match degenerated a bit into a brawl. Instead of exchanging holds, Lesnar and Angle were exchanging punches. Angle tried to catch Lesnar with a German suplex, but the Monster From Minnesota countered with a go-behind, a hard forearm to the back of Angle's head, and sent him flying backward with a release German suplex of his own! After this, he put Angle up on his shoulders for the F-5, but JBL reached in and tagged himself in. Lesnar connected with the F-5, but as he went for the cover, Jimmy Appleseed wasn't making the count. Lesnar got up and questioned Appleseed, who tried to explain to him that Angle wasn't the legal man. Before Lesnar could react, JBL rolled Lesnar up and with a roll up, pinned the World Heavyweight champion for the second week in a row!

Kurt Angle and John Bradshaw Layfield defeated Abyss and Brock Lesnar when JBL pinned Lesnar after a roll up in 0:14:48.
Rating: *** 1/2

JBL quickly got out of the ring, mostly because Abyss was charging at him to rip his head off. Lesnar was more than livid that for the second week in a row, he let his guard down and JBL pinned him. Jimmy Appleseed tried to calm Lesnar down, but there was no soothing the beast's anger as he picked Appleseed up and spun him to the mat with the F-5! Though it got a big pop from the crowd, you know the World champ is going to pay because you just don't do that to a referee.

On next week's Explosion, we have the final stop before Trick or Trouble! The Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio will serve as host, where you will see Monty Brown and Matt Hardy take on Lance Storm and Edge, as well as Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle in Pick Your Poison matches! You won't want to miss it!

An I Quit Match?  That should be great.  Still pulling for Angle to pull it out, but JBL has the momentum and Brock/JBL looks to be on the horizon.

Punk/Daniels is always good.  I'll be looking forward to that.

Great show as usual.
