WCW Monday Nitro
April 2, 2001
Atlanta, Georgia

BISCHOFF WELCOMES US/INVESTOR #1
Eric Bischoff welcomes us to WCW, and announces one of his investors. Out comes PAUL HEYMAN from the back. He shakes hands with Bischoff. Heyman goes into a trademark diatribe about how Vince McMahon is the common enemy of every wrestling promoter, and that is why Eric Bischoff and him have formed an alliance of sorts, they may hate each other, but they hate Vince more. Heyman asks if anyone was curious as to where his share of the money came from. He says it came from Vince McMahon himself. Vince liked the ECW product so much that he was funding it during the final run. He took the money Vince gave him and invested it wisely with his Uncle Moisha, and low and behold, a flower blossomed from the seeds.

Heyman delves further and says that Bischoff has offered ECW a vehicle in WCW, meaning that WCW talent and ECW talent will fight for each promotion's respective championships, so we'll be seeing decent action. Heyman declares the Monday Night Wars re-ignited. Bischoff announces that Booker T will defend both the United States and World Titles, as will Rhyno, defending both the ECW World and Television titles. Bischoff mentions that he has selected an opponent for Rhyno's Television Title from the WCW roster, and Heyman has selected an opponent for Booker's United States Title, and Rhyno will defend it right now.

MATCH #1
For the ECW Television Title
Rhyno © Vs Bam Bam Bigelow
To start off, Bischoff has chosen Bam Bam Bigelow. It's ironic isn't it? It's under ECW rules, and Bigelow and Rhyno exchange some common brawling tactics. Rhyno gets Bigelow in the corner for a Spear, but Bigelow moves, and then the lights go out, and finds Sabu holding a chair when they return. He whacks Rhyno a few times before leaving into the crowd, and Bigelow capitalizes with the Greetings From Asbury Park for the 3-count and the Television Title.

Bam Bam Bigelow def. Rhyno in 9:09 with the Greetings From Asbury Park
(Bam Bam Bigelow won the ECW Television Title.)

How will things fare for Rhyno later in the evening against his opponent for the ECW World Title? Only time will tell.

Match #2
The Wall Vs Alex Wright
Pure WCW action right here. Wright is still bald, and gets squashed by The Wall, who looks impressive, but still lacks a charismatic element. The fans remained indifferent to him. Wall gets the victory in 7 minutes.

The Wall def. Alex Wright in 7:04 with a powerslam.

We're shown a commercial for Spring Stampede which will air on April 30, 2001 from Buffalo, New York, but we're going to the WCW United States Title Match.

EVERYTHING'S COOL
Booker T comes to the ring with both titles. Heyman stands at the entrance way and announces his opponent, a man who should have got his chance a long time ago, ROB VAN DAM.

Match #3
For the WCW United States Title
Rob Van Dam Vs Booker T ©
Wow. RVD has a chance to win another promotion's championship. RVD's quickness slows down Booker T, and the match goes this way for the first few minutes. RVD goes for a Rolling Thunder, but Booker moves. Booker hits a scissor kick, and goes for the Harlem Hangover, but RVD moves. RVD hits a dropkick to Booker's head, and goes for a Five-Star Frog Splash. He connects, but Booker's leg is under the ropes, and he only gets a two count. There's a commotion in the crowd. It's Scott Steiner, and he has a lead pipe. Meanwhile, Booker T and RVD get up. RVD blocks a punch, but Booker counters with the Book End. Book goes for the Hangover, but Scott Steiner nails Booker in the back with the pipe. RVD gets up and nails Booker with a superplex, followed by a Five-Star Frog Splash for a 3 count and the United States Title.

Rob Van Dam def. Booker T. in 16:06 with the 5-Star Frog Splash.
(Rob Van Dam won the WCW United States Title.)

HOLLA IF YA HEAR ME
Scott Steiner attacks Booker T after the match. He keeps driving the lead pipe into Booker's back. It takes security to remove Steiner. Steiner is eventually thrown out of the building.

Match #4
Dustin Rhodes Vs Lex Luger
Luger is a heel, and Dustin Rhodes is still Dustin Rhodes. Luger loses some steam half-way into the match and gets a bulldog from Rhodes for his troubles. This brings Buff Bagwell down to the ringside area, and pulls the referee out. They double-team Rhodes, and eventually Luger is disqualified.

Dustin Rhodes def. Lex Luger via disqualification in 12:06.

CLOBBERIN' TIME
This two-on-one attack continues, prompting Dusty Rhodes to run to the ring and save his son. Rhodes nails both Luger and Bagwell with a bionic elbow, and the Rhodes family celebrates.

REVAMPING THE CRUISERWEIGHT DIVISION
Paul Heyman announces that the WCW cruiserweight division will have new breath breathed into it, and we shall see it in the next match. WCW's franchise cruiserweight against ECW's franchise cruiserweight.

Match #5
Tajiri Vs Rey Mysterio
Wow. The crowd was excited for this. Mysterio (who put his mask back on, per request of his uncle) and Tajiri keep going back and forth with high flying action. Mysterio back flips into a stiff kick to the back from Tajiri, and Tajiri goes for a kick of death, which Mysterio ducks and counters with a crucifix, but Tajiri counters that by bringing Mysterio to the ropes for a tarantula. The crowd loves it. The ref breaks it, and Mysterio takes a headbutt to the gut, followed by a springboard sunset flip for a two count. Tajiri brings him up for a power bomb, but Rey counters with a DDT. Mikey Whipwreck comes to the ring and distracts the referee. Mysterio goes to Tajiri and gets the mist to the face. Tajiri nails the Kick of Death and Mysterio is done.

Tajiri def. Rey Mysterio in 15:05 with the Kick of Death.

Whipwreck & Tajiri celebrate as medics check on Mysterio.

Match #6
For the WCW Cruiserweight Title
Shane Helms © Vs Super Crazy
Helms and Tajiri crossed paths before the match started. Crazy and Helms have a decent match. Crazy goes for a top-rope maneuver with Helms, and Helms pushes him off. Helms runs down and nails Crazy with a Shining Wizard so hard that the smack made the crowd cringe. A long 3-count and Super Crazy is down, much to the crowd's surprise.

Shane Helms def. Super Crazy in 13:28 with the Shining Wizard.
(Shane Helms retains the WCW Cruiserweight Title.)

We get word that the main event for Spring Stampede will be Booker T defending the WCW World Heavyweight Title against Scott Steiner in an Anything Goes match, provided Booker retains his title tonight.

IF I CAN BE SERIOUS FOR A MINUTE
Lance Storm comes to the ring and speaks about how ECW should have never been allowed to live again. He talks about how he should have held that title, but Paul Heyman was too stupid to put the belt on me. He then challenges Sabu to a regular match. The lights go out and the match is on.

Match #7
Lance Storm Vs Sabu
Sabu starts brawling with Storm before the match begins. Storm uses ground moves to stop Sabu's offense, and takes Sabu down with a superkick that gets him square in the jaw. Bill Alfonso comes to ringside to help Sabu. Lance nails him with a superkick as well. Sabu tackles Storm, which takes out the referee. Alfonso gets up and gets Sabu a chair. Sabu props Storm in the corner and sets the chair and nails Storm with the Air Sabu. Storm goes down and Sabu tries for an Arabian Facebuster, but Sabu loses balance. Storm capitalizes with a rana, and holds on to Sabu's leg and the ropes. The ref gets up and a quick three count gives Storm a victory.

Lance Storm def. Sabu in 17:10

Storm hi-tails it out of there, before Sabu gets his hands on him.

It's time for the ECW Title Match.

MY GOD, IT'S CANE.
Rhyno's challenger is announced first. It's THE SANDMAN. Not Hak. The Sandman. The foul mouth, beer drinking, son of a bitch with a cane.

Match #8
For the ECW World Title
Rhyno © Vs The Sandman
How fitting. The last two champions fighting for the title one more time. This is just a fight. Sandman gets the cane and whacks Rhyno across the head so many times that Rhyno starts absorbing the punishment. Rhyno grabs the cane and whacks The Sandman, then nails him with the Spear, which Heyman has renamed The Gore, and The Sandman is done.

Rhyno def. The Sandman in 8:08 with the Gore.
(Rhyno retains the ECW World Title.)

IT'S TIME
Booker T's challenger is announced. It's RIC FLAIR. The crowd goes insane for Ric Flair. Booker T comes out and the crowd still cheers.

MAIN EVENT
For the WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Booker T © Vs Ric Flair
It's a chop-fest to start and the crowd loves it. Flair dictates the pace of the match for the first five minutes, and gets his corner flip early on. Ric nails Booker with a snap suplex, then works on his legs. Flair eventually puts Booker in the Figure Four, and it looks like Flair will have a 17th reign as champion. Booker starts turning him and eventually breaks it. Both men get up. Flair throws a punch, but it's blocked by Booker, followed by a kick to the midsection, then a SCISSOR KICK out of nowhere. He covers Flair, and gets a three count.

Booker T def. Ric Flair in 12:27 with the Scissor Kick
(Booker T retained the WCW World Heavyweight Title.)

Flair gets up and grabs the title out of the referee's hands. He hands it to Booker, and raises his hands. They hug, but not before Scott Steiner stands at the entrance way with security standing in front of him.

END OF SHOW.

Thunder is up next, from Greenville, South Carolina, and we'll see Scott Steiner in action, as well as Rhyno defending the ECW World Title again, plus more cruiserweight action.

Wow!

The Devil and the Reaper in a working relationship??? I give it 6 months before their at each others throats

I guess ring rust must have set in as both Booker and Rhyno lose belts in the first half hr of the show.

Woulda been nice to see Flair go around yelling "17 time world Champion" but I guess that would have to wait.

Booker vs Steiner should be good. I liked booker at this point before he found royalty.

Good read keep it up

Good first card

My only concern is if there are too many titles involved in the picture.  I think some unification matches might be necesary down the road or an ECW VS WCW angle starts and two brands form much like the real smackdown and raw.

An alternate history of WCW and ECW? Awesome! The idea of Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff joining forces is also intriguing. I remember there were rumors going around back then about a possible idea being floated around about it, but apparently there was nothing to it.

I would assume that Thunder will become an ECW show, right?
djmasterscooterPosted on 07/28/06 at 07:42:19

I'll say this.  I have thought of so many possibilities for this circuit to take, and you'll just have to read.
americamamushiPosted on 07/29/06 at 06:12:02

Not sure how I feel about WCW & ECW working together at first glance.  I'll have to see how it pans out over time though.

Didn't expect Emeril's favorite wrestler (get it?  Bam?  BAM!... god I hate Emeril :) ) but given that Sabu screwed Rhyno over I like it.  Don't like kicking things off with the screw job ending, but in and of itself I think it's good.

Alex Wright lost because he's still bald. :) He needs his hair back and the leather jacket with the orange tights or whatever they were.  I heart Alex Wright, but I didn't heart Berlyn-Wright as much.

Geez, the double champs are really getting the whats-what aren't they?

Gotta admit, I loved Dusty comin' out to say Dustin.

Glad to see Storm win and with the way he won I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing another meeting between the two.

Good to see Rhyno retain against Sandman.  I wouldn't have been able to buy Sandman with the title, at least not at this point.

Not a bad start to things.

I'm predicting Steiner to dethrone Booker when they meet at Stampede
