[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 9/12/05

Snabbit888Posted on 07/25/06 at 23:39:18

With only six days away until our next pay-per-view, Retribution, there were a lot of happenings going on Monday Night Explosion! We have a packed house at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, and a big time main event as World Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar teams with the the World Tag Team champions, Eric Angle and Rob Van Dam, to meet the respective number-one contenders for those titles, Kurt Angle and the World's Greatest Tag Team! Also on the card, "The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Rhyno, Edge defends the Television Title against Low-Ki and Steve Bradley in a triple threat match, Frankie Kazarian puts the Cruiserweight Title up for grabs against Petey Williams, and so much more!

Match #1
Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero
These two individuals have a long history with each other, but in GCW, their paths have rarely crossed. These two used to be great friends, but it's hard for anyone to be Eddie Guerrero's friend these days. This was a good, if not formulaic match as both men seemed to have their minds on other things. Eddie was as vicious as he usually is, and Mysterio continued to show why he is considered by many to be the best flier in the game. The match was firmly in Latino Heat's grasp when he caught Mysterio with a brain buster, which is when MICK FOLEY made his presence felt. The Hardcore Legend came out, and he had a crowbar in tow with him as he mosied by Guerrero's low rider. Eddie warned Foley to get away from it, but Foley just smiled as he smashed one of the headlights out with the crowbar. Guerrero was going nuts in the ring, but didn't dare go to stop Foley because his most hated enemy was out there with a large metal weapon. Foley smashed out the other headlight before giving a couple of shots to the windshield. Guerrero was about to lose it completely when Mysterio surprised him with a rana and was able to hold him down for the pin!

Rey Mysterio Jr. pinned Eddie Guerrero after a rana in 0:07:52.
Rating: *** 1/4

Guerrero was even more furious as not only was his low rider being destroyed, but he lost the match as well. He went after Mysterio, but Rey got out of harm's way and bailed to the floor. Guerrero yelled up at Foley, who just smiled and waved before nailing the low rider with the crowbar one more time. This could be the last straw that puts Guerrero completely over the edge. What we do know for sure is that the hardcore match at Retribution is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen.

THE ORTONS SET UP ABYSS
Our next segment started with "Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr. out in the ring by himself with a microphone, calling out the monster that is Abyss. A few uncalled for comments was all it took for Abyss to lumber out to the ring, looking to rip the elder Orton apart. However it turned out to be nothing more than a setup as RANDY ORTON ran out behind the behemoth and blasted him with a chair, knocking the big man down which allowed Orton to lay in several more shots with the chair before he and daddy escaped before Abyss recovered. I understand Orton's want to keep himself in the picture, but Abyss would not be my first choice of someone to try to make an example out of.

Match #2
Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Goldust (w/ Daffney)
Before this match started, we were informed that both of these men would be involved in the Tag Team Turmoil that will take place on the pre-game show before Retribution. Booker T will be teaming with Rey Mysterio Jr. while Goldust will team with Sean O'Haire. These two themselves used to be tag team partners, and have a storied if not complicated history with one another. One thing that is for sure though is that whatever their history is, the present was being dominated by Booker T. This was his match from start to finish as Goldust couldn't get out of the blocks before Booker put him away with the Axe Kick.

Booker T pinned Goldust with the Axe Kick in 0:05:44.
Rating: *** 1/4

This match was an impressive display from Booker T who looks to have put the final nail in this feud. With Rey Mysterio Jr. winning in the first contest, this new makeshift team is riding a wave of momentum which could help them win Tag Team Turmoil and become the next in line for a shot at the World Tag Team Titles.

Match #3
"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles/"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. The Basham Brothers (w/ Shaniqua)
Though the Basham Brothers haven't been around television too much in recent weeks, the fact that they are former two-time World Tag Team champions is something you cannot ignore. They are a tough team, but AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson were up to that challenge here tonight. As has been a trend for the past few weeks though, ELIX SKIPPER couldn't help but get himself involved, coming down to ringside. He didn't get physically involved, but he was trying his best to distract AmDrag and Styles, inching closer and closer to the ring. LOW-KI came out as well, but not to distract Styles and Danielson. He was out there to get Skipper to come back and let this thing die, but Skipper was hearing none of it. Styles didn't care much for their conversation either way, and jumped onto both Skipper and Low-Ki with a twisting plancha! Bryan Danielson went around and joined in the fight, leading to the Bashams picking up the win via disqualification.

The Basham Brothers (Doug Basham and Danny Basham) defeated AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson when Doug Basham defeated Styles by countout in 0:06:55.
Rating: *** 1/4

The GCW Official Brigade quickly intervened to break this up, but the battles between these two teams keep getting harder to control with each week that passes. These teams are going to have to meet eventually to solve this conflict, but we do know that both teams will be involved in Tag Team Turmoil this Sunday.

RANDY ORTON RECEIVES SOME BAD NEWS
Randy Orton and his father were bragging about the number they did on Abyss earlier in the night when Commissioner Tommy Dreamer came up. "Sorry to spoil your fun, boys, " Dreamer started, "but I've got a little information for you. This Sunday at Retribution, you're going to be in a match, Randy, and I want you to take one guess who with." The Ortons immediately put up a fuss, but Dreamer wouldn't let them finish their argument before informing them that this Sunday it will be Randy Orton one-on-one with Abyss!

Match #4
Cruiserweight Title Match
Frankie "The Future" Kazarian (c) vs. Petey Williams
Frankie Kazarian's Cruiserweight Title will be on the line against Kid Kash this Sunday, but that was only if he could get past this test tonight in the form of Petey Williams. A good match between these two as they have become quite familiar with each other in the ring and have picked up many of the tendencies of their opposition. Both men took a lot of damage and it was going to take an opening to put this one in the books, and that opening just happened to present itself for the Future when he caught Petey in a superplex and hit a beautiful flying cross body press to take a well wrestled win.

Frankie Kazarian pinned Petey Williams after a flying cross body press in 0:09:11.
Rating: *** 3/4
(Frankie Kazarian retained the GCW Cruiserweight Title.)

That was the sort of statement win that Frankie Kazarian needed going into his anticipated match with Kid Kash. Kazarian had no time to rest on his laurels though as out came Kid Kash himself, and he had a HUGE man with him. He had to be at least 6'8" or 6'9" and close to 300 pounds, but most importantly, he looked angry as he jumped in the ring and planted a huge boot into the face of the Cruiserweight champion. This must be the backup that Kash was talking about, and what a dominating backup it was! This beast of an individual wasn't done yet though as he picked Kazarian up and drove him to the mat with a towering power bomb. We're not sure who this man is, but he certainly made his mark on Frankie Kazarian.

HARDCORE HOLLY APPLAUDS DOANE, BUT THEY HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS
Hardcore Holly was walking backstage when he came across his young protege, Ken Doane. After Doane's pre-match attack on Holly cost them the match, the Teen Phenom got ready to fight, assuming that the Alabama Slamma was there to rough him up. Holly told him to relax though and actually complimented Doane on what he did last night, telling him that was the fire he had been looking for. Holly told Doane that he earned his respect, and offered him a handshake, which Doane tentatively but sincerely accepted. This new found respect was abruptly halted though when MELINA, the sexy diva who leads MNM, made her first appearance on Explosion. Melina came with a warning saying that MNM was going to be taking over the tag division and they would prove it by winning Tag Team Turmoil this Sunday. Holly wasn't about to let some "cheap whore" get in his face and tell him what was what, so he less-than-politely asked Melina to leave. Melina refused, and when Holly got a little more assertive, JOHNNY NITRO and JOEY MERCURY ran in from behind and left Holly and Doane lying. MNM all laughed before leaving Holly and Doane worse for wear.

Match #5
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. Steve Bradley vs. Low-Ki
Television champions generally have a tougher time holding their titles for lengthy reigns because the title generally is defended more often than others. You don't always get the option of what matches you want to wrestle or your opponent, as was the case tonight with Edge having to defend his title in a Triple Threat match against former TV champ Steve Bradley and former Cruiserweight champ Low-Ki. The championship advantage was gone because Edge didn't have to be involved in the decision to lose his title. What resulted was a more aggressive Edge than we had seen in the past. Bradley and Low-Ki are known as being hard hitters as well, so all three men took quite a bit of punishment in not a long amount of time. Edge narrowly escaped losing the title when Bradley hit Low-Ki with the Smashmouth, but Edge got in to break up the pinfall just in time. Bradley countered with an eye gouge and hit the ropes, but Edge recovered enough to catch him with the Spear, but once again the pin was broken up when Low-Ki hit a stiff kick to Edge's head. Ki got Edge up for the Ki Krusher, but Edge slid out of it and hit Ki with a power bomb. Using the ropes for leverage, Edge retained the TV Title.

Triangle Match:
Edge defeated Low-Ki and Steve Bradley when Edge pinned Low-Ki after a power bomb in 0:08:39.
Rating: *** 1/2
(Edge retained the GCW Television Title.)

MATT HARDY MAKES A VOW FOR THIS SUNDAY
Immediately after the title was handed over to Edge, Matt Hardy's theme kicked up and he and Mickie James came out to the top of the ramp. Hardy let everyone know, and especially Edge, that this Sunday would see the Television Title come back around his waist, "because when we're inside that steel cage, Edge, there will be nowhere for you to run and nowhere for you to hide. And that BITCH [indicating Lita] won't be able to save your ass again!" Mickie James went on to threaten Lita, saying that she would deal with her if she even thought about interfering.

Match #6
"The Alpha Male" Monty Brown (North American champion)/"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. Anarchy (w/ Lance Storm)
Monty Brown and Lance Storm have had all kinds of problems with Lance Storm and Anarchy in recent weeks, and looked to take a bit out of their sails in tag team action. Doug Williams and Paul Burchill had the advantage as Lance Storm was at ringside with them, but that was not the case with Chris Benoit for the other team as he was busy preparing for his match later in the night with Rhyno. The all British team looked dynamite as despite their association with a jerk like Storm, they are showing themselves to be a consummate team. Jericho and Brown, on the other hand, suffered a bit from a clash of styles and being unfamiliar with one another. They had a few timing miscues that allowed Anarchy to work them over, but the individual abilities of the Alpha Male and Y2J kept them in this match. This was a little too close for comfort for Lance Storm, who jumped in the ring and superkicked Monty Brown before this match could go on any longer.

Chris Jericho and Monty Brown defeated Anarchy (Doug Williams and Paul Burchill) when M. Brown defeated Burchill by disqualification in 0:08:35.
Rating: * 1/2

A loss for Anarchy, but it was all an excuse for Storm, Williams, and Burchill to put the beatdown on two of their three opponents this Sunday. Storm is apparently taking this losing of his North American Title shot a lot more personally than we originally thought he would.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD
John Bradshaw Layfield came out to be the guest on Palumbo's Pizza Place to discuss primarily what happened in last week's main event where Eric Angle pinned JBL in a tag match when the teamwork between JBL and Kurt Angle flew out the window. JBL had a lot to say (as usual) but strangely it was primarily threatening Kurt Angle. He mentioned that they had a working agreement in place, but he doesn't like losing, and "we lost last week because of Kurt Angle." JBL ended by telling Angle that he better stay the hell out of his way or he is going to get hurt.

Match #7
"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. Rhyno
Chris Benoit has agreed to be the partner of Chris Jericho and Monty Brown this Sunday, and Lance Storm has taken offense to that. Therefore, he hired the Manbeast Rhyno to put the Crippler out of commission. Benoit has been ultra-aggressive since his divorce from his wife, and he's had a tendency to wrestle matches with a "nothing to lose" attitude. That's exactly what he was bringing here, and I think it surprised Rhyno a bit as usually he is the one who is bringing the aggression. Despite the fire he was bringing, Benoit did take a lot of punishment in this contest, as to be expected in a match against Rhyno. But Benoit is tenacious, and managed to counter a Gore attempt into a Crippler Crossface attempt, but couldn't quite get it locked on. Eventually Benoit's technical prowess was enough for the Crippler to survive this encounter.

Chris Benoit pinned Rhyno after a swandive headbutt in 0:08:36.
Rating: ****

Though Rhyno didn't win the match, Lance Storm still got his money's worth as Rhyno nearly cut the Rabid Wolverine in half with the Gore post-match. Benoit will be able to make it to Retribution, but at what percentage of health is still up in the air.

CM PUNK HAS SOME CRYPTIC WORDS FOR CHRISTOPHER DANIELS
Before our main event, we headed back to the locker room where CM Punk, the leader of the Prophecy, was standing, flanked by Sean O'Haire, Goldust, and Daffney. The room was dimly lit which made Punk's words all the more cryptic. Punk ranted about how Daniels was his prized pupil, his main general if you will, the one with the most promise to bring his message to the masses. "But you ruined that, Christopher. The second you let yourself get hurt, you ruined it. You are weak, Christopher, plain and simple." Punk continued by saying that Daniels had the chance to be a part of something special, to be at the forefront of what will be the most powerful force in wrestling, but he let personal aspirations blind his judgement. "This Sunday, Retribution will be mine, Christopher. You broke my heart when you abandoned the cause, but I will break a whole lot more. This Sunday, you will be no more."

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
Brock Lesnar (World Heavyweight champion)/Eric Angle/"The Whole F'n Show" Rob Van Dam (World Tag Team champions) vs. Kurt Angle/The World's Greatest Tag Team
We had one more match to go and it was the last opportunity for many wrestlers to get the mental edge going into the pay-per-view as Brock Lesnar, Eric Angle, and Rob Van Dam teamed up to take on Kurt Angle and the World's Greatest Tag Team. In the early goings of this match, you could tell that the contingency of Team Angle was quite uncomfortable against the World champion and the World Tag Team champions. Lesnar, Eric Angle, and RVD are definitely in the heads of their opponents, and it was showing early on. However as the match settled in, the teamwork of Team Angle helped them build up some confidence and really work over their opponents. It's hard to like the WGTT on a personal level, but they are the best tag team in the world today, and Kurt Angle may very well be the best athlete in the world period (though Brock Lesnar may disagree). There was a certain level of viciousness being employed by Team Angle, with a lot of focus being directed to Brock Lesnar's nagging rib injury and RVD's surgically repaired neck. RVD was being worked over in the ring as Team Angle expertly cut him off from tagging his partners. But after suffering an immense beating, RVD caught Kurt Angle with a stepover heel kick and managed to make the tag to Brock Lesnar! Lesnar came in a house of fire with clotheslines on all three members of Team Angle, followed by three overhead belly-to-belly suplexes. The numbers finally got to Lesnar, but RVD and Eric Angle ran in and this match went completely bonzo gonzo, and everyone spilled to the floor except for Haas and Eric Angle. Angle went for the Angle Slam, but Haas got out of it and caught Angle with a German suplex. This didn't seem like it would be enough to put Angle away, except that Shelton Benjamin reached in and grabbed Angle's arms so that he couldn't get his shoulder up.

Team Angle (Charlie Haas, Kurt Angle and Shelton Benjamin) defeated Eric Angle, Rob Van Dam and Brock Lesnar when C. Haas pinned E. Angle after a German suplex in 0:16:16.
Rating: *** 1/2

Team Angle had pulled off a huge victory over the World champion and the World Tag Team champions, much to the chagrin of the fans in Providence. The show ended with Team Angle going up the ramp celebrating their victory while Lesnar, RVD, and Eric Angle were fuming in the ring over their loss.

Very good card.  Being my first time looking at GCW, i got a good sense of what was going on and what angles you got going on.  The card, while not, earth shattering, served as a good lead in to your PPV which is what i sense you were going for.  I look forward to seeing what Retribution has in store
djmasterscooterPosted on 07/27/06 at 08:33:18

Retribution is shaping up, and I love what you're doing with CM Punk.  Hope ECW takes note.

Orton and Abyss.  Hope Orton gets smoked.

and Brock & Angle should be a classic, hope Angle regains the belt.

I'm always fond of Foley coming back and doing a match or two.  It doesn't hurt.  Keep up the good work.
