Great American Bash - 6-16-96

The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner and Scott Steiner) defeated Fire & Ice (Scott Norton and Ice Train) when S. Steiner defeated Ice Train with the FrankenSteiner in 0:19:56.
Rating: ** 1/4

During the match Theodore Long came out to scout Fire & Ice.  Norton was pissed at Train for losing as Long tried to calm them both down as they made their way to the back.

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Marcus Alexander Bagwell by countout in 0:22:36.
Rating: *** 1/4

Like him or not, DDP is lethal with his Diamond Cutter.  Page hits Bagwell with the Diamond Cutter on the ramp area and wins by count out.

Konnan made Juventud Guerrera submit to the Tequila Sunrise in 0:21:13.
Rating: *****
(Konnan retained the WCW US Champion.)

An extremely fast paced match, with a lot of very high impact moves.  These lucha cruiserweights are quite exciting to watch. In the End, Konnan retains by submission.

Dean Malenko made Rey Misterio submit to the Texas Cloverleaf in 0:05:36.
Rating: *** ½
(Dean Malenko retained the WCW Cruiserweight Champion.)

A solid back and forth match with both men hitting high impact moves.  In the end it was the "man of 1000 holds" that prevailed with his Texas Cloverleaf leg-lock.

Big Bubba Rogers pinned John Tenta with the Bubba Slam in 0:06:29.
Rating: 1/2*

Rogers managed the win over the Big John Tenta, and in kind, pulled out hair clippers and proceeded to shave half of Tenta's hair as the big man lay unconscious.

Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Chris Benoit pinned Kevin Sullivan after a Northern Lights suplex in 0:23:31.
Rating: **** 1/4

This match was a long time coming and a very personal battle over what would seem to be a new relationship between Benoit and Sullivan's ex-Wife, Woman.  This fight went to the max, as it they literally fought throughout the entire building.  They brawled through the crowd, through the backstage area and even into a public Men's room.  In the end, they made their way back to the ring and Benoit managed a Pin, but they continued to brawl until Woman made her way down to ringside and begged Chris and Kevin to stop.  Eventually the other Horsemen came out and pulled Benoit off of Sullivan, only to in turn go back and beat him down as a group until the Dungeon of Doom made it out for the save.

After his streak of losses starts to add up, Lord Steven Regal is quite frustrated, he makes his way to the ring and challenges anyone in the back to dare think that they can out wrestle him tonight.  The Stinger shows up and Regal tries to back pedal, but Sting is in the ring and the ref rings the bell.  Sting and Regal take it to each other, with Sting kicking out of quite a few nasty submission holds.  In the end, Regal fell prey to the Stinger Splash.
Sting pinned Steve Regal with the Stinger Splash in 0:26:56.
Rating: *** ½

Eric Bischoff Calls out the Invaders
EB: "Ok Shawn, for weeks you have been showing up un-invited, tonight you actually have an invitation, so bring your ass out here, and your little snake too!"

Shawn Michaels and Jake Roberts come walking out with all the cockiness in the world.  Jake has his boa constrictor around his shoulders.

SM:"Well, well, well, Eric is growing himself a pair. That's a shocker (as he pretends to be scared)"

EB" Shut up punk, I've got one question for you before this goes any further. Did Vince McMahon send you here?"

SM: Shawn looks over to Jake as if to see if he should tell Eric then back to Eric "Nope"

EB: "Then who did?"

JR: "you could say ... we are private contractors for another benefactor in the industry" with a chuckle.

EB "Who Damn it?"

SM: "That is enough questions from you, now it's our turn.  We Challenge WCW for a 3 on 3 Tag Team Match at the Bash at the Beach next Month.  Jake the Snake, Myself ... The Heartbreaker Shawn Michaels, and our Boss, versus any 3 of your guys.  You win, we walk away and never look back.

EB: "Who is this Boss, This Benefactor?"

JR: "We're Through Answering questions.  You can answer our challenge and if you accept you can meet him at Bash at the Beach."

EB: "You're on!"

SM: "Who's on your Team?"

EB: "It's like you said, no more questions tonight.  WCW will announce their team tomorrow night on Nitro"

Shawn smiles and turns around only to fire off a Heartbreaker Super Kick on Eric that sends him backwards and off the stage through a table.  Jake and Shawn Smile and High 5 and pose before leaving as the medical crews attend to Eric.

The Giant pinned Lex Luger with the Chokeslam in 0:18:04.
Rating: ** 1/4
(The Giant retained the WCW World Champion.)

Luger lasted longer than just about anyone in the Giant's path of late, and even had the Giant near a submission, but his knee buckled as he tried to lift the Giant up into the Torture Rack and in turn The Giant gave Luger a chokeslam for his troubles.

Tune in Tomorrow night when Eric will announce it's 3 member team to face off against the arrogant invaders.

Interesting to see Shawn Michaels and Jake Roberts of all people in the Invader role for this alternate history.  I wonder how much of this angle will mimic the nWo and how much of it will shy away.  It's going to take a little bit for me to get fully into this as I have to a) remember how things were in 1996 and b) see who you're using and how you're using them, but HBK and the Snake have me interested, so let's see what's next.

Thanks for the Reply.  Until I hit Bash at the beach and re-write History as far as the "legdrop heard around the world" The cards are fairly accurate as best as I have from my research.  It is sad to see how little continous flow WCW actually had back then booking wise.  So far the only real changes outside the invasion I've made is to replace a few jobbers that I don't have proper exports for, but were actually on the roster and I an not inclined to use Steve McMichael nor Kevin Greene in this circuit.  That Said I'm currently only running 3 Horsemen.  I plan to truely start my change of history after the Bash at the beach.

Since we are having a little "comment on some circuits" day, I figured I'd leave some feedback here, as I have been lurking and reading so far. I have been loving the execution of Michaels and Roberts. It's such a fresh twist on the old idea that its really interesting to me. I'm really intrigued as to who the third man is going to be. It could definately be a huge deal if it is someone else. Flair, perhaps?

This whole idea is an interesting one. Shawn Michaels would have a big impact just like Scott Hall did. But Kevin Nash at the time was a far bigger name then Jake Roberts. The Snake was a solid upper mid carder back in the day, but around the time of the NWO he wouldn't be a guy Id care that much about. But Im still interested to see how his role unfolds. Roberts/Michaels makes an odd pairing, how did u come up with Roberts to be the 2nd guy? just curious. I think you've put in effort going back and looking for accurate cards, and that might be one of the reasons Im intrigued by this circuit.

Keep Up the good work,
Murph
