GWA Ground Zero - 08/20/05

AzraelPosted on 07/26/06 at 05:20:51

(Fireworks explode as we're in Omaha, Nebraska for Ground Zero. Tonight, the Dynasty will face Chris Benoit, Ken Shamrock and two partners! Edge defends the GWA T.V. Title against Christian York! The Amazing Red will defend the GWA Cruiserweight Title against El Generico! Jerry Lynn makes his in-ring return and much more tonight! But now, it's time for the first match.)

[Liquid Sticks vs. Quiet Storm and Tajiri]

Liquid Sticks have been trying to make a name for themselves thus far in the GWA, picking fights with the SAT on a number of occasions. Now though, they're taking on Quiet Storm and Tajiri, who have had mixed success as a tag team. Deranged and Storm start out and Deranged doesn't take Storm seriously, leading to Storm popping him with a number of forearms. Tajiri gets tagged in and he destroys Deranged with a series of kicks. Deranged gets the advantage after some cheating and tags in Spanky. After some back and forth, Tajiri whips Spanky into the ropes and Deranged tags himself in. Tajiri brings Spanky down with a backbreaker, but Deranged surprises him from behind with a springboard dropkick for two. Deranged knocks Storm off the apron and to the floor, but Tajiri gets up and beats on him for a bit. He lifts him up for a power bomb, but Deranged counters into a huracanrana. He grasps hands with Spanky, who's on the floor, and holds Tajiri down for three.

Liquid Sticks defeated Quiet Storm and Tajiri when Deranged pinned Tajiri after a huracanrana in 0:07:36.
Rating: *** 1/2
[Trinity interfered against Deranged.]

(Liquid Sticks gets yet another win by cheating, but Trinity attacked Deranged during the match, so maybe it was fair. Either way, Quiet Storm and Tajiri have to go back to the drawing board.

Next, we go to the back with the Young Lions.)

Joey Matthews: Don't worry man. I took on Edge last week and I'll give you all the pointers you need to beat him.

Christian York: I know what to do. I've wrestled him before. He needed to take advantage of my trying to help Blanchard up. But now I know what he's capable of. The same trick won't work twice.

JM: That's the spirit.

CY: Tonight, there's going to be a new T.V. champ crowned. And his name is Christian York, the first two time champion in the GWA.

JM: And I'll come down to ringside to make sure that he doesn't do anything underhanded.

(York smirks and walks off as Matthews follows. The camera then cuts to Adam Bramledge standing by with Jerry Lynn.)

AB: Jerry Lynn, last week you returned to the GWA in controversial fashion, attacking CIMA and Rey Misterio Jr. last week.

JL: Wait a minute. I attacked CIMA last week. Rey just happened to be in the way.

AB: Isn't that a little cold?

JL: Cold? Do you remember what CIMA did to me? He tried to break my ankle. He tried to end my career. But he didn't. He just hurt it a little. And that's going to be his biggest mistake.

AB: But still, coming into the match last week with a chair...

JL: Am I supposed to be playing with kid gloves Adam? CIMA tried to take me out, and I just returned the favor. It looks like I took out Rey instead though. Them's the breaks.

AB: "Them's the breaks"? Your interference gave CIMA a Cruiserweight title shot.

JL: That is kinda bad. But he's a long way from winning the Cruiserweight Title...and I'm a long way from being done with him.

(Lynn walks away and the camera goes back to the ring for the next match.)

[El Generico vs. The Amazing Red]

This match came about because Red wanted to defend his title against someone and El Generico was one of the few people still available. Whether it is because of the title shot or because of how Rhyno destroyed him last week, El Generico cuts down on the comedy and puts a lot of effort into beating Red. However, Red shows why he's the champion by not going down after a series of strikes from Generico. Generico lifts him up for a suplex of some sort, but Red slides down his back and pops him from behind with a spinning leg lariat. Following that, he hits a Code Red for two, but it clearly affects Generico adversely. Generico tries to keep up the fight, but Red knocks him down with a spinning enzuigiri and hits the Infra Red for three.

The Amazing Red pinned El Generico with the Infra Red in 0:08:15.
Rating: *** 1/2
(The Amazing Red retained the GWA Cruiserweight Title.)

(Red retains even though El Generico put up a good fight. Red gets a mic.)

Red: CIMA, I want you to come out here right now! You think you can just hurt my friend and get away with it? I've already challenged Jerry Lynn to a match next week, but you CIMA, I want you now!

(CIMA walks out and stands at the entryway.)

Red: What are you waiting for? Come down here and fight me!

(CIMA shakes his head no and starts to head to the back.)

Red: Fine, I'll come after you.

(Red drops the mic and leaves the ring, running up the aisle. He attacks CIMA, who fights back. They brawl for a bit before Jerry Lynn comes out and attacks both men! The sea of officials then come out to separate the three men. Red and Lynn yell at each other while CIMA doesn't resist the officials holding him back. The camera cuts to Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock in the back.)

CB: I don't know what Jericho's trying to prove...

KS: He just wants to try and take our belts away and give them to Styles and Christian.

CB: Well, yeah, but I mean in the grand scheme of things.

KS: Hmm?

CB: I'd thought he'd formed the Dynasty to try and win the North American Title, but he's made no attempts so far. It's just like he's settling old grudges.

KS: Trying to take our belts...trying to take our chickens.

CB: ...excuse me?

KS: I use the extra money we get for being champions to buy chickens! Loads and loads of chicken! Lots of protein.

CB: ...

KS: You have to keep fit, you know.

Voice: I have a favor to ask...

(The camera pans over to find Lance Storm.)

LS: As far as I know, you two don't have partners for the match later tonight.

CB: Yeah...

LS: And since I have a problem with them too, I was wondering if I could team up with you two.

CB: No problem.

LS: Excellent. Any idea on who the last guy will be?

CB: I've got an idea...

KS: If I could get my hands on a Gobbledy Gooker, I'd probably be able to eat for weeks!

LS: What's he talking about?

CB: Don't ask.

(The camera goes back to the ring and Jerry Lynn and Tony Mamaluke are already there.)

[Jerry Lynn vs. Tony Mamaluke]

This is Jerry Lynn's first match since being injured by CIMA on June 18th. Lynn came back last week in attempt to get revenge on CIMA, but inadvertently cost Rey Misterio Jr. the match instead by hitting him with a chair. Mamaluke, eager to get his first win in the GWA, attacks Lynn's bad ankle from the outset and tries to apply the Sicilian Crab. However, Lynn hasn't been worn down enough and breaks free. Mamaluke takes Lynn down with a dragon screw, then goes for a spinning toe hold, but Lynn kicks Mamaluke off. Mamaluke gets up and runs at Lynn, but Lynn catches him with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker to stun him. Lynn follows that up with a tornado DDT that pretty much knocks Mamaluke out. He brings him up and hits the Cradle Piledriver just to kick Mamaluke while he's down. He then mercifully covers for three.

Jerry Lynn pinned Tony Mamaluke with the Cradle Piledriver in 0:06:58.
Rating: ** 3/4

(Lynn gets an impressive win on his first match back. He raises both arms in the air and yells some unflattering remarks about CIMA's mother into the camera. The camera then cuts back to Edge.)

Edge: Every week, I come out here and I defend my T.V. Title. I take everybody's best shot week after week. And why? Because I represent this company. Because this belt means that I am the very embodiment of the GWA. People who tune in every week know that there's going to be a constant: that they're going to see Edge in the ring, doing his thing. And just like I've said time and time again, I've always come out on top. But I find out last week that there's "not enough room" on Ground Zero for me. That my match against Joey Matthews would have to be on Anarchy? And I think to myself, "What the hell?" But I sucked it up. A lesser man might have let down his guard. A lesser man might have been beaten. But instead, I went into the ring and I did what I do. I beat Matthews down. I kept my belt. Which leads me to you Christian York. We fought a while ago. You didn't beat me then. And you can complain until you're blue in the face that I cheated...that I was dirty...but all that says to me is that you didn't want this belt bad enough. You won't do whatever it takes for this belt. You won't claw for it...you won't scratch for it...you won't kill for it. And that is why you won't beat me tonight.

(The camera cuts back to the ring where Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Christopher Daniels are both introduced. Daniels gets a mic.)

CD: Last week, you all saw the unveiling of the real me. Low Ki, Elix Skipper, those people were holding me down. They were riding my coattails, slowing my progress...keeping me from my goal. To think, I actually started to even entertain the thoughts of relying on them...on not succeeding with my own strength. But that's over with now. I dissolved Triple X. I kicked Low Ki out of the GWA. And now, it's just me, the Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels. And I'll show you all what real wrestling is about and I will hold the GWA North American Title very soon. And then after that, I'll convert you all to the purity of wrestling...one man at a time. And it begins...with you Chavo.

(Daniels tosses the mic out of the ring and the bell rings.)

[Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Christopher Daniels]

Chavo Guerrero Jr. has been doing well since going on his own, but he's facing Christopher Daniels tonight, a man who wants to make an emphatic statement. Chavo tries to ground Daniels and work over the neck that Daniels broke during his WCW tryout, but Daniels always gets the advantage back with a thumb to the eye or a facerake. Daniels brings Chavo up for the Angel's Wings, but Chavo backdrops out of it and punches away at Daniels. He hits Daniels with a European uppercut to knock him in the corner, but Daniels moves out of the way of an avalanche attempt. Chavo staggers back and Daniels drops him with an STO and quickly applies the Koji Clutch. Chavo tries to free himself, but can't and slowly loses consciousness. Rather than take the win that way, Daniels brings Chavo up and drops him with the Last Rites and covers for the win.

Christopher Daniels pinned Chavo Guerrero Jr. with the Last Rites in 0:08:36.
Rating: *** 1/4

(Daniels gets a very impressive win over Chavo Guerrero Jr. But he doesn't have time to savor it as Elix Skipper immediately hits the ring and punches away at Daniels. They trade blows until Daniels decides that discretion is the better part of valor and leaves the ring. He staggers to the back as Skipper yells at him from the ring.

The camera then cuts to the Dynasty in the back.)

Chris Jericho: Tonight is the very first night that the Dynasty stands as one in the ring. All of us have something to prove. I'll show the world that I'm not some afterthought. I'm the most charismatic son of a bitch in wrestling today, and I'll get what I've earned. AJ and Christian...they want what they've earned. They've had the Tag Team Titles in their grasp. They had Shamrock taken out...Benoit beaten. And by a fluke they lost.

Christian: That's right.

CJ: And by joining the Dynasty, they've made sure that they're going to get another chance at the belts. And this time...they'll win. And Rhyno, well, Rhyno just wants to hurt people.

(Rhyno smiles menacingly.)

CJ: We all have something to gain. We're all the best at what we do. But due to lack of opportunity or just plain bad luck, we're being held down by the man.

Christian: Damn the man!

CJ: But together, we're unstoppable. Together, we're going to take wrestling by storm. Together, we'll beat the hell out of Chris Benoit, Ken Shamrock, Devon Storm and whatever other asshat they'll bring. And the GWA will never...EVER...be the same again.

(The camera cuts back to the ring for the next match.)

[Christian York vs. Edge]

These two last wrestled each other on May 17th, when Edge pinned York in order to move into the finals of the TV Title Tournament. During the match, he dove onto York while he was trying to help up Commissioner Blanchard, a tactic that York viewed as dirty. York has his chance to win the belt tonight and he goes at Edge hard in the beginning, pelting him with a bunch of punches and kicks. Edge, though, pokes York in the eye to get the advantage and beats him around, including popping him with a spinning leg lariat for a near fall. Edge whips York into the ropes and clotheslines him over the top, then goes for a somersault plancha, but York moves out of the way. York immediately rolls Edge back in the ring to take advantage, but can't get three. He tries to hit Edge with a tilt-a-whirl slam, but Edge blocks it, making York drop him to the mat with a DDT. He climbs to the top rope and goes for the Moonsault, but Edge gets his knees up. However, both men are down on the mat as time expires.

Edge and Christian York battled to a draw in 0:10:00.
Rating: **
(Edge retained the GWA T.V. Title.)

(Nothing's been settled yet as Edge and Christian York fought to a time limit draw. York will certainly get another title shot in the near future. Joey Matthews runs down the aisle and enters the ring to check on York while Edge drags himself to the corner. The camera then cuts to the back with Steve Corino.)

SC: It's been all of two weeks here in the GWA for the King of Old School Steve Corino, and already everybody's running scared. Last week was just the beginning. I took Lance Storm, a great wrestler, a man with something to prove, and I beat him easily. One Old School Expulsion and it was all over. That's what the King of Old School brings. Knowledge. I've watched the tapes. I've studied the legends. I've studied the not-so-legends. I see tendencies. I see weaknesses. And I take advantage, just like Lance Storm learned. The GWA needs a wrestling god to represent them. The GWA needs the King of Old School Steve Corino. And I won't disappoint.

(The camera cuts back to the ring for the main event.)

[The Dynasty vs. Chris Benoit, Ken Shamrock, Lance Storm, and the Rock]

The Dynasty formed recently in order to gain titles in the GWA. AJ Styles and Christian are the number one contenders to the Tag Team Titles held by Chris Benoit and Ken Shamrock, while Rhyno has had his recent battles with the TV Champion Edge. Jericho's working his way up the ladder for the North American Title. Lance Storm tried to get into the Dynasty last week by beating Steve Corino, but failed and got laid out. The Rock's had problems with Jericho, Styles and Christian since the inception of the GWA. With all the animosity between the people in the ring, it's no wonder that it turned out to be a wild brawl. Everyone quickly paired off with Jericho brawling with the Rock, Benoit brawling with Styles, Shamrock brawling with Christian, and Rhyno brawling with Storm. Rhyno quickly gets the best of his matchup and tries to hit Storm with a piledriver, but Shamrock breaks off and makes the save. He whips Rhyno into the ropes, but gets hit with a Gore! Rhyno yells and brings his arms in the air, but Storm knocks him out of the ring with a superkick. Christian blindsides the Rock from behind, allowing Jericho to enter the ring and confront Storm. Storm goes after Jericho with a series of strikes, but Jericho covers up to avoid the worst of it. After a back and forth excchange, Storm knocks Jericho to the mat and goes to the apron to attempt a springboard dropkick. However, Rhyno shoves Storm off the top rope so he lands hard on the mat. Jericho quickly shaks off the cobwebs and hits the Lionsault for the win.

The Dynasty (AJ Styles, Chris Jericho, Christian and Rhyno) defeated Chris Benoit, Ken Shamrock, Lance Storm and Rocky Maivia when Chris Jericho pinned L. Storm after the Lionsault in 0:18:59.
Rating: *** 1/4

(The Dynasty wins after some shady tactics, but that doesn't stop the brawl on the outside of the ring. Jericho celebrates, but the Rock gets back in the ring and pulls him down to the mat. He stomps away at him, but Rhyno clobbers him from behind. Rhyno gets in a few stomps as Jericho gets up slowly. Styles and Christian overwhelm Benoit on the outside. Shamrock tries to help his partner, but he's still woozy from the Gore and he gets rammed into the ringpost. The sea of referees then hit the ring to try and break things up as we go to commercial.

After the break, we find Tully Blanchard already in the ring with a mic in his hand.)

TB: And now, it's time for the contract signing for the main event at the GWA's third pay-per-view, Fallout, on September 18th. First, let me bring out the challenger, Taz!

("Swamp Thing" plays as Taz walks slowly down the aisle with a towel over his head. He steps through the ropes and raises his arms in the air.)

TB: And next, the North American champion, Kurt Angle!

("Medal" plays as Kurt Angle walks down the aisle. He has the North American title around his waist and steps through the ropes. He takes off the belt and raises it in the air before shoving it in Taz's face. Taz pushes him away and they start to fight, but Blanchard gets in the way.)

TB: Now, now, that's enough. Both of you sit down right now.

(Taz and Angle glare at each other and have a seat.)

TB: Now first, Taz, sign the contract.

(Taz takes the pen and signs, not taking his eyes off of Angle.)

TB: And it's your turn, Kurt.

(Angle snatches the pen from Taz and signs the contract then immediately gets up. He grabs the mic from Blanchard.)

KA: You just made the biggest mistake of your life Taz. There's a reason why I'm the champion. There's a reason why I won this gold medal. Because I am the greatest wrestler of ALL TIME. And a great wrestler will always beat a good brawler any day of the week.

(Taz gets a mic from the outside.)

Taz: I remember Chris Daniels saying that. And what did I do? I choked his ass out. Just like I'm going to choke you out. You're a good amateur wrestler. I'll give you that. But what you do inside the circle...is nothing like what you're in for when you find yourself in the ring staring at me. When you were in the Olympics, so far in the GWA, you've wrestled for fun. For kicks. But at Fallout, when you get in the ring with me, it will be a fight for your life. Because if you don't fight for your life, I will choke you out just like every other punk that's ever thought to **** with me.

KA: You beat Daniels and you've already got a big head. It's like you think you're six feet tall. I'll let you in on a secret: Daniels is not even close to me. I don't wrestle for fun. I wrestle to prove I'm better than my fellow man. To show I'm better than each and every one of you in the crowd...each and every guy in the back...and especially gutter trash like you. Oh, it's true.

Taz: That so?

KA: That's so.

Taz: I guess you won't mind fighting me right now then. Why wait till Fallout? I'll shut your mouth right now.

(Taz and Angle go nose to nose again. Blanchard gets another mic.)

TB: Stop right there! I figured this would happen. I'm not going to let you jeapordize the main event at Fallout, so neither of you can touch each other until Fallout.

KA: Or what?

Taz: Yeah, what's to stop me from doing this?

(Taz slugs Angle in the head with a forearm. Blanchard drops his head.)

Taz: What are you going to do now?

TB: You can come on out.

Taz: What?

(A man comes out of the crowd and slides into the ring, charging Taz from behind. He whips Taz into the corner and follows in with a high knee. Taz staggers out and the man bounces off the ropes and hits another high knee to knock him down. He climbs to the top rope as Angle gets up and jumps on Taz. The man drops back down and grabs Angle from behind, hitting him with a German suplex.)

TB: This man is the deterrent. If either of you touches the other before Fallout, not only will you be fined, but this man has my authorization to ensure that it won't happen again, given the appropriate restraint of course. So Kurt Angle, Taz, meet "The Anarchist" Doug Williams!

(Williams wrings his hands as Angle and Taz start to shake off the effects of the attacks. The camera then fades.)

Liquid Sticks is such an odd name, and Tajiri with Quiet Storm is a very odd pairing.  Looks like the former is the team you're pushing though, so no beefs with this match.

Young Lions... meh.   Give me Joey Mercury over Joey Matthews any day. :)

Good return promo by Jerry Lynn.

Good title defense from Red.  El Generico is sort of growing on me.  Red showing he's a fighting champion, and Lynn showing that he doesn't care what it takes to get his hands on CIMA.

Ken Shamrock is the new Roadkill.  I like Shamrock's character... the goofiness is a nice slant on him.

No doubt Lynn was beating Mamaluke.

Excellent promo from Edge.  I like when heels justify their actions for cheating in ways that make sense.

Easy win for Daniels, but the real story is the feud with Skipper.  Skipper gets a little taste, but I think he's going to have more troubles with the Fallen Angel when the time comes.

I didn't expect York to take Edge to time limit.  A little surprised by that.  A rematch is in order, and hopefully they get a little more time.

Wrestling main event was very solid, if not a bit confusing with all of the wrestlers involved.  The Dynasty needs the win more though to establish themselves as legit threats.

I like the twist on the "don't touch each other until the PPV" stips.  No suspensions, no loss of title shots... just an ass kicking from Doug Williams.  Very innovative.  Well done.
