Revolution Pro Wrestling Showdown 7-19-06

JustinPosted on 07/22/06 at 03:44:41

The show opens with a video set to "What If" by Creed. It is a little like the old Raw opening, just showing the talent in street clothes as they head towards eachother. Then a huge brawl erupts between them as pyro goes off & the announcers start their duties.

Announcer #1: Ladies & gentlemen, welcome to the debut edition of Revolution Pro Wrestling Showdown! I am your host Kevin Kelly & joining me here at ringside as color commentator is:
Announcer #2: I'm Barry Windham, and let be one to say, thank you for tuning in tonight to what has the makings of a truly historic event. This is a show for everyone that is sick to death of what the people up North call "Sports Entertainment", because unlike Raw, SmackDown, and the watered down crap that's being called ECW; in RPW, we actually wrestle. So let's get down to business & head to the ring for our first ever match here in Revolution Pro Wrestling.

The Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark) vs Divine Storm (Chris Divine & Quiet Storm)

The crowd wasn't sure who to root for in this first match, although both teams did showcase alot of high risk offense, such as Quiet Storm's attempt at a High Speed Sunset Flip being reversed by Mark Briscoe into a Running Liger Bomb. But even moves like that weren't enough to win this critical live crowd over as they remained somewhat quiet for this match.

Divine Storm (Chris Divine and Quiet Storm) defeated The Briscoe Brothers (Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe) when Q. Storm pinned M. Briscoe with the Storm Cradle Driver in 0:16:04.
Rating: * 1/4

As both teams leave the ring area, ring announcer Stephen Bayer, gets back into the ring for the next matches introductions:
Introducing first: from New Orleans, LA, weighing in tonight at 276 pounds, "The Bad Dogg" Rodney Mack! (Rodney Mack comes out to a small round of boos)
His opponent: from Ponce, Puerto Rico, weighing 265 pounds, he is a former 1/2 of the NWA World Tag Team Champions: Apolo! (about half the crowd cheers for the former TNA star)

Apolo vs "The Bad Dogg" Rodney Mack

This match was alot of back & forth brawling that saw Apolo getting the advantage. With the crowd starting to get behind him, Apolo was about to rally as Rodney Mack threw him from the ring. The 2 heavyweights brawled around ringside & Mack even busted Apolo open afterramming him into the ringpost. Seeing his own blood infuriated the Latin superstar, who then came back with stiff shots as the 2 got back into the ring. Sensing that the end may have been near, Mack grabbed Apolo by the throat & refused to release the hold for the referee's count, which led to his disqualification, much to the crowd's distain.

Apolo defeated Rodney Mack by disqualification in 0:10:32.
Rating: 3/4*

Before Stephen Bayer can introduce the next match, a Middle Eastern chant plays in the arena. A familiar looking man wearing a white Arabic headdress steps from the back & comes to the ring to a . He takes the mic from Bayer & chases him from the ring.
Man: For theose of you that remember; my name is Muhammed Hassan! I was once involved in one of the most wodely covered angles in recent history. Titles were kept off of me, I was removed from 2 internationally broadcast programs & I was subsequently fired due to fear, prejudice, and politics. Now, in RPW, there will be nothing to stop me from reaching the top, at all costs.
An island drum beat backed by rock guitar plays as a large tattooed Samoan heads to the ring. Stephen Bayer makes his introduction.
SB: From Allentown, PA, weighing 265 pounds, "The Samoan Storm" Afa Anoai!

"The Samoan Storm" Afa Anoai vs Muhammed Hassan

Thanks to his dirty tactics, the crowd quickly turned on Hassan & began to cheer Afa. Hassan tried many submission holds to stop Afa's assault, but, he could not get the 2nd generation Samoan wrestler to tap out. Afa tried for his signature Frog Splash on 2 occations, the first failing when Hassan got his kness up & the second missing when Hassan managed to roll out of the way. But, the 3rd time was the charm for "The Samoan Storm" when he finally hit his top rope finisher for the 3 count. Of the first 3 matches, Afa got the loudest response from this crowd.

Afa Anoai pinned Muhammad Hassan with the Frog Splash in 0:10:15.

Barry Windham hypes the next match to the tv audiance & Kevin Kelly.
BW: I'll tell you what Kevin Kelly, I'm excited to see this next match. When we finally got the word that this company was going to be picked up, this next guy brought out an open contract to have a Falls Count Anywhere match. The guy I'm talkin' about is called Supreme. He's a former 4 time XPW King of the Deathmatch, he's been to Japan, he's fought in all kinds of weird & wild matches. I mean, how bad is a guy that refers to himself as "The Human Horror Show"? But let me tell ya, the man that grabbed that open contract is no slouch himself, in Dustin Rhodes. The guy's a life long friend of mine, we grew up together in this business. We've wrestled eachother, we've teamed up to win the NWA & WCW Tag Team Titles. He's been a champion everywhere he's wrestled. I mean I can't say enough about him, but when it comes to hardcore, whoelse can say they once wrestled on the back of a moving flatbed truck?

No-Time-Limit-No-Countout-No-DQ-Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
"Lonestar" Dustin Rhodes vs "The Human Horror Show" Supreme

The crowd was really into this match as it was billed as "Falls Count Anywhere" and it lived up to it by having action spill throughout the arena. These 2 battled up the runway, into the crowd & back to the ring, using whatever weapons they could get their hands on. Blooded poured from the heads of both combatants with Rhodes getting the worst. The crowd was solidly behind Rhodes, mostly due to his name recoginition, as he fought hard against the deathmatch experience of Supreme. The end came in the ring, when Supreme, armed with a cookie sheet, leveled Rhodes & then delivered his "Mecca Toad Splash" for the 3 count.

No-Time-Limit-No-Countout-No-DQ-Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Supreme pinned Dustin Rhodes with the Mecca Toad Splash in 0:12:36.

KK: Barry, I've just been informed that next week, RPW will be holding an 8 team tournament to crown the first ever Revolution Pro Wrestling Tag Team Champions.
BW: Well Kevin, you can bet that everyone's gonna want to be a part of that and that they're all lining up in the back to make sure that their team is on the list. As a matter of fact, I'm willin' to bet that the 2 teams in this next match are already to go for that gold next week.

Marty Jannetty & Maven vs "Above Average" Mike Sanders & Sean O'Haire

The crowd was pretty pumped up with the arrival of Jannetty & Maven, 2 favorites from their WWE days. But due to their inexperience together as a team, the 2 former WCW Natural Born Thillers; O'Haire & Sanders were just too much for them. The high point of the match for Jannetty & Maven came when they were able to double team O'Haire & took the fight to the ringside area. However, O'Haire's strength & the technical abilites of Sanders proved to be too much & eventually the least experienced one of the 4: Maven fell victim to the 3.0, ending the match.

Mike Sanders and Sean O'Haire defeated Marty Jannetty and Maven when M. Sanders pinned Maven with the 3.0 in 0:14:55.

As Windham & Kelly put over the last match, a lone wrestler makes his way to the ring & gets on the mic.
Man: Normally I would just let the ring announcer do his job, but unfortunately, due to "legal issues", I felt the need to come out here & explain things myself. You see, for the past 5 years, I've been wrestling as Chris Cage, but, ever since a certain someone signed on with the Jarretts & trademarked his name; I get released for a developmental deal in OVW due to "disaplinary reasons". All I've heard for months is a chant of (sarcasticly sing songy) "You're not Christian".Well those chants are right, I'm not Christian Cage. My name is Chris Taylor, and I'm gonna prove to everyone out there that I am going to be a bigger superstar than Christian or anyone else I worked with in OVW will ever be.

"Superstar" Chris Taylor vs Kaos

The crowd was really confused over who to cheer for thanks to the promo that Taylor cut just prior to the match. But, just like he said he would, Taylor go the best of the former XPW TV Champion. And while the fans in the arena may not have been as responsive, you can bet the fans at home were entertained by technical showcase these 2 put on.

Chris Taylor pinned Kaos with the Flying Cross Body Press in 0:11:38.

The camera cuts backstage to show Dustin Rhodes & Supreme have restarted their brawl from earlier tonight. As the 2 beat on eachother with whatever they can get their hands on, officials & agents flood the hallway trying to seperate them.

Tajiri vs Gangrel

In this battle of former WWE superstars, Tajiri was easily the favorite. But that didn't stop Gangrel from doing everything in his power to try & derail the Japanese Buzzsaw. Even taking the battle to the floor. Tajiri proved to be just too much for the vampire as he locked on the Tarantula and flollowed it up minutes later with his Kick of Death.

Tajiri pinned Gangrel with the Kick Of Death in 0:09:52.

Backstage: Jason Knight is with Diamond Dallas Page.
JK: DDP, tonight you make a long awaited return to the spotlight against fellow New Jersey native Steve Corino. Do you think that after your long layoff from wrestling that you're ready for such a challenge?
DDP: Listen up monkey boy, when I can back after 2 1/2 years to TNA, my first opponent was Raven. He's a guy that is one of the most brutal to have to step in the ring with, I know you know that. Steve Corino? Sure, he's held a lot of titles & wrestled all over the world. But he's no Raven, and worse for him, he's no DDP. So tonight, we find out which one of us 2 Jersey boys is the best(points at himself). And Steve Corino will just have to go home when he feels the BANG!

Main Event:
Diamond Dallas Page vs "The King of Old School" Steve Corino

For the first ever main event in RPW, a battle of former World Champions seemed fitting. Corino a former ECW, NWA, and AWA World Heavyweight Champion with International experience would face the challenge of a lifetime in the former 3 time, 3 time, 3 time WCW World Champion who has faced just about every big name this business has seen in the past 10 years. The crowd was firmly behind DDP as he countered Corino's dirty tactics with a few of his own. Page also kept up with Corino's pure wrestling style, trading holds & reversals with his fellow New Jersey native. Page's size & strength were great advantages when they took it to the floor, as DDP repeatedly whipped Corino into the ring steps & barriers. The end came when Corino's frustrations took control when he used a low blow, that he kept well hidden from the referee, to set DDP up for the Old School Expulsion. Page complained about the low blow & what he thought was a fast count to the referee, but, he held firm that his call was the right one.

Steve Corino pinned Diamond Dallas Page with the Old School Expulsion in 0:11:32.

WOO!  The return of Kevin Kelly to the announce position! *marks the fug out*  And I like seeing Barry Windham back in any fashion.

Was rooting for the Briscoe Brothers since I'm not real familiar with Divine Storm.  A little surprised at it's rating, but then again it is your debut card.

The Mack attack is back... and apparently he's not too fond of winning.  Silly Rodney, when will you learn that you can choke the life out of your opponent only in 4 second intervals.  :)

Like seeing Hassan back in wrestling.  I was sad to see him leave WWE.  So much wasted potential... course, it prolly would've stayed wasted had he stayed.

There is someone you don't see too often around the boards.  Supreme.  And I like seeing Dustin Rhodes as Dustin Rhodes.  Using him and using him without the Goldust gimmick is a dirty pleasure of mine.

Maven & Jannetty seem like quite the odd combination so it wasn't much of a surprise to me that they lost.  I'm interesting to see if you can develope them into a formal team with good depth or if they'll leave eachother for greener tag pastures.

Yay Tajiri!

I like seeing Corino go over in the main event.  Not only am I a fan of Corino, but I'm not terribly fond of Mr. DDP.

I'm looking forward to seeing if Corino & Supreme can repeat tonight's success as well as who will take the tag titles home.  For some reason I'm thinking it'll be Sanders & O'Haire, but I'll be rooting for Hassan & Mack I think.  Just to be different. ;)
Critic of the DawnPosted on 07/22/06 at 16:56:04

The reason the Briscoe Brothers vs. Divine Storm match turned out as a pronounced "meh" is because the mainstream audience has never heard of any of them.  3 of the 4 wrestlers competing had a heat of 1, with only Jay Briscoe at 2 because of his size.  One might postulate that the crowd came there to see big stars like DDP and Marty Jannetty, and when given a bunch of flippy unknown cruiserweights instead to start off the show, they crapped all over them.

Metaphorically, of course.

I notice that for the most part, the less-over wrestlers and teams went over the more established names.  Was this an unbooked coincidence, or an effort to quickly build credibility for your less widely known wrestlers?

Ah yes, I forgot about the pre-start adjustment of the heat ratings.  :-

Just an unbooked fluke. I'm gonna run it unbooked for a few more shows to see the what kind of feuds might develop.

I thought it was alittle odd that Tajiri actually lost heat in his victory over Gangrel.

The tag tournament should be up within a few days.
