[GCW] Monday Night Explosion - 8/8/05

Snabbit888Posted on 06/15/06 at 03:46:24

GCW was in Lexington, Kentucky for the first time ever, hitting the Rupp Arena, the home of the Kentucky Wildcats for Monday Night Explosion! What a colossal show we have on tap as we're blazing into Summer Sizzler! Tonight, the World Heavyweight Title is on the line as Brock Lesnar defends against "The Crippler" Chris Benoit! Also, two more competitors in the Elimination Chamber will meet as Kurt Angle goes one-on-one with Randy Orton! Also, Eric Angle takes on both members of the World's Greatest Tag Team in a handicap match! If Angle wins, he and his mystery partner will get a World Tag Team Title shot at Summer Sizzler! All this and a whole lot more on Explosion!

Match #1
Elimination Chamber Qualifier
Abyss vs. Steve Bradley vs. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero vs. "The Teen Phenom" Ken Doane
Tommy Dreamer didn't waste any time this week with determining who the final man in the Elimination Chamber would be by setting up an elimination Fatal Fourway between Abyss, Steve Bradley, Eddie Guerrero, and North American champion Monty Brown. However, while Brown was being introduced, RHYNO attacked the Alpha Male from behind, catching Brown completely off guard. Brown couldn't defend himself in time as Rhyno Gored him through the protective ring barricade! Officials had to help Brown to the back and it looked like he was out of this match. Our Fatal Fourway would still have four though as the Teen Phenom strutted down to the ring. Ken Doane decided to insert himself into this match as the fourth competitor.

With Abyss and Steve Bradley being two of participants in this match, we knew it was a matter of when they would beat the crap out of each other, not if. When Abyss got in the ring, Bradley demanded that Guerrero tag him in. Guerrero took one look at Abyss and had no problem meeting Bradley's request. Abyss and Bradley continued their goals of destroying each other, spilling to the outside to continue the battle. They were unfazed by the count of referee Petey Pluck who counted both men out, eliminating BOTH from the match. Eddie was smiling as he watched Abyss and Bradley fight up the ramp, but that smile turned sour quickly when Doane rolled him up from behind and almost got the 3 count. Doane strung together a series of moves and got several nearfalls, looking like he was going to upset Eddie. But if there's anything Guerrero knows how to do, it's cheat his way to victory, and he did that by using a little misdirection to hit the Teen Phenom with a low blow. Doane never really recovered from this as Eddie went on to put him away with the Frog Splash.

[For the 6th spot in the Elimination Chamber]: Four Corners Match:
Eddie Guerrero defeated Abyss, Ken Doane and Steve Bradley:
x double countout (S. Bradley and Abyss) in 0:08:06
x E. Guerrero beat K. Doane via the Frog Splash in 0:12:57
Rating: *** 1/4

With this victory, Eddie Guerrero is now officially the 6th man who will compete for the World Heavyweight Title in the Elimination Chamber at Summer Sizzler. Eddie is very capable of taking the gold, but will he be able to put his focus on winning the championship rather than Mick Foley? That remains to be seen. Because of the happenings before the match started, a decision has been made by the GCW Championship Committee that Monty Brown will defend the North American Title against Rhyno at Summer Sizzler. We also know that Abyss and Steve Bradley will meet in a falls-count-anywhere war.

TOMMY DREAMER MAKES SOME DECISIONS FOR SUMMER SIZZLER
Tommy Dreamer called Cruiserweight champion Frankie Kazarian into his office to talk about what happened last week. Kazarian said that what he did last week was the smartest thing ever done in wrestling, because not only did he retain his Cruiserweight Title by getting himself counted out against Red, but he caused the Petey Williams vs. Kid Kash match to be a draw, meaning he wouldn't have to defend the title at Summer Sizzler. "That's where you're wrong," replied Dreamer, who told Kazarian that he WOULD be defending the title at Summer Sizzler against Petey, Red, AND Kash in a Fatal Fourway match where the first man to score a pinfall or submission would be the Cruiserweight champion! Kazarian was livid, but Dreamer said his decision was final as the Future left in a huff. At this point, Dreamer was surprised to see Television champion Edge and Lita storm into his office. Edge said that Matt Hardy should be suspended and this Mickie James should be put in jail for the unprovoked attack two weeks ago. Dreamer faked wiping off tears before telling Edge that Hardy will not be suspended and Mickie James will not be put in jail because she has been signed to a contract. Not only that, but he has signed a mixed tag match for Summer Sizzler with Hardy and James taking on Edge and Lita. Before Edge could say anything back, the Commissioner ushered him out of the office saying that his TV Title defense was next.

Match #2
Television Title Match
"The Rated R Superstar" Edge (c) (w/ Lita) vs. The Hurricane
Edge was still fuming over finding out he and Lita have to wrestle in a mixed tag match at Summer Sizzler, and he looked to take those frustrations out on The Hurricane. The problem was that The Hurricane is a master of making you look ridiculous if your focus is elsewhere. As a result, Edge was given a run for his money by the Man In Green, who came within an eyelash several times of becoming the new Television champion. Lita tripped The Hurricane up though when the superhero was garnering a lot of momentum. When he turned back toward Edge, the only thing he was met with was the Spear and a victory for the Television champion.

Edge pinned The Hurricane with the Spear in 0:07:49.
Rating: **** 1/4
(Edge retained the GCW Television Title.)

That was a little closer than Edge would have liked, but he is still the TV champion as he and Lita prepare for Matt Hardy and Mickie James at Summer Sizzler.

PAUL LONDON UPDATES US ON HIS CONDITION
We had Paul London via satellite from his home in Austin, Texas to give us an update on his condition after breaking his back in a match with Elix Skipper two weeks ago. London started by thanking all of the fans for their love and support, and thanked GCW management for their support and agreement to pay all of the medical bills no questions asked. London said he has done a lot of thinking over the past couple weeks. The doctors have told him that with the severity of his break, he would be out of action for at least a year. After talking with his family, London has decided that for all intents and purposes, he is retiring from wrestling. He said never say never, and that in a year he will reevaluate his decision, but this injury has put a lot of things in perspective for him. He made sure to mention that he had no ill will toward Skipper for what happened. "This is a dangerous sport, and accidents happen." London thanked everyone one more time before he left. It's sad to see such a promising career cut short like this. We wish Paul London the best in whatever he does.

Match #3
Eric Angle vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (World Tag Team champions)
Eric Angle definitely had the odds against him. If he was to get his World Tag Team Title shot at Summer Sizzler with a mystery partner, he was going to have to beat both Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, with an injured ankle no less. Eric Angle may be too blinded by rage and want for revenge on his brother to realize that he made a very bad decision by taking this match. Eric Angle got a good deal of offense in early, but the numbers game eventually got to him as Haas and Benjamin were working over his ankle. Hass and Benjamin were taking great delight in beating their former teammate, casually dumping him to the floor. The WGTT were content in to simply let Eric Angle be counted out, but the leader of Team Angle KURT ANGLE ran out and blasted his brother with a sickening chair shot!

Handicap-Match:
Eric Angle defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin) when E. Angle defeated C. Haas by disqualification in 0:09:39.
Rating: ***

Haas and Benjamin looked at Kurt with a look of shock, but their leader assured them that he knew what he was doing and that Eric Angle would be in no shape to compete at Summer Sizzler. Team Angle left while Eric Angle had to be helped to the back.

JBL BRAGS ABOUT HIS BATTLE ROYAL WIN
John Bradshaw Layfield came out in his limo driven by Lamont and came to the ring with a smile that went from ear to ear. JBL grabbed the mic and gloated about his win in the battle royal last week, saying it was step one in his plan to fulfill his destiny of being the World Heavyweight champion. JBL verbally masturbated himself for a couple of minutes, saying that there is no way he is walking out of Summer Sizzler without the World Heavyweight Championship. At this point "Y2J" CHRIS JERICHO came out and in not so kind words told JBL to shut the hell up because he was boring everyone in attendance. Jericho said he is an authority on the World Title seeing how he is a former champion after all, and told JBL that he is simply not championship material. After JBL made a joke about Jericho not winning the World Title but Brock Lesnar winning it for him, Y2J said that's enough and challenged JBL to a match right here and now!

Match #4
"Y2J" Chris Jericho vs. John Bradshaw Layfield (w/ Lamont)
This match wasn't pretty due to the contrast in styles, but it did provide for some interesting action. The former World champion Chris Jericho looked to be doing exactly what he said he was going to and that's shut JBL up, but then Lance Storm came out and positioned himself on the top of the ramp with a microphone in hand where he ran down Y2J the entire match. Jericho tried to keep his cool, but he finally had enough and directed his attention to Storm, allowing JBL to catch him by surprise with a small package for the 1-2-3.

John Bradshaw Layfield pinned Chris Jericho after a small package in 0:07:55.
Rating: ** 3/4

After the match, Lance Storm continued berating Jericho, saying he doesn't know how to get it done because he's not serious enough, also throwing in that his reign as the World Heavyweight champion was a joke. Storm said the match at Chaos Reigns was a complete and utter fluke and that at Summer Sizzler, the wrongs will be righted and Storm will prove he is the best athlete to come out of Canada in GCW.

Match #5
"Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels/Booker T (w/ Sharmell) vs. Sean O'Haire/Goldust (w/ CM Punk & Daffney)
Christopher Daniels completed step one to getting his chance at getting CM Punk in the ring. This week he had step two as he teamed with Booker T to take on Sean O'Haire and Goldust. Daniels and Booker have no past history, but both men have their beefs with the Prophecy and were more than willing to coexist in this match. For Punk though, this match was nothing but a setup as Punk jumped in the ring to make this a 3-on-2 attack and causing the disqualification.

Booker T and Christopher Daniels defeated The Prophecy (Goldust and Sean O'Haire) when Booker defeated Goldust by disqualification in 0:03:41.
Rating: ** 1/4

Daniels and Booker were the winners, but they weren't looking like it by the beating that the Prophecy was giving them. Sharmell was helpless as Daffney was holding her at bay. Sharmell might be feisty, but Daffney is absolutely insane. Things looked hopeless until the crowd got to his feet and cheered as REY MYSTERIO JR. sprinted to the ring, flying into the ring with a springboard sitdown senton on Sean O'Haire! Goldust came running at Mysterio but he countered with a drop toehold, hanging the Golden One on the middle rope where he then hit the 6-1-9. Punk ran at Mysterio, but Mysterio ducked which let Daniels nail Punk with a kick to the midsection and put him down with the Angel's Wings! O'Haire and Goldust reached in and pulled their leader to the floor. With this victory though, albeit by disqualification, Tommy Dreamer has signed Daniels vs. Punk for Summer Sizzler.

PALUMBO'S PIZZA PLACE - SPECIAL GUEST - HIMSELF
Chuck Palumbo made himself the guest on this week's Palumbo's Pizza Place, and with a good reason because he wasn't in the mood to be his normal goofy self. Palumbo was sporting a bandage on his forehead from when Eddie Guerrero assaulted him with a pizza cutter a week ago. The Italian Stallion was very intense in this promo, an intensity he has been lacking in his stay in GCW. Palumbo said that what Eddie did last week was way over the edge and that next week, he was challenging Latino Heat to a match. Nothing against Palumbo, but in normal circumstances a challenge from him is nothing to get too worked up over, but we have never seen him like this. We know that Guerrero has accepted the challenge, but it might not be in his best interest this close to the Elimination Chamber to go up against a guy who wants to rip you apart.

Match #6
Petey Williams vs. "The Amazing" Red vs. "The Notorious K.I.D." Kid Kash
These three individuals discovered that they would all get a shot at the Cruiserweight Title at Summer Sizzler, but they were looking to get the one-up on each other before they make it to Charlotte. This match was under one fall rules, which makes it difficult because you have to take out not only the man you are trying to pin, but the other man so he can't make the save. Things continued as they have been for Kid Kash as Petey and Red temporarily formed at alliance early on to take Kash out and then they were going to duke out at the end for the win. Kash had no problems lying in the weeds while Petey and Red fought it out, and then make his move. Red looked to have a pin when he hit the Red Star Press on Petey, but Kash jumped in and nailed Red with the Dead Level to steal the win.

Triangle Match:
Kid Kash defeated Petey Williams and Red when Kash pinned Red with the Dead Level in 0:05:51.
Rating: *** 1/2

Kash left the ring pointing to his head to indicate that he outsmarted his opponents, which in truthfulness, he did. If he can pull off a similar move in 13 days, he will be the Cruiserweight champion.

Match #7
Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton (w/ Bob Orton Jr.)
This was our first of two matches that would serve as a preview for the Elimination Chamber as Kurt Angle and Randy Orton locked horns. Considering the background of these two, this was a clean match. Both men came in here looking for something to prove, and they wanted to show that they were the better athlete. The match was primarily kept on the mat, but Angle and Orton do it so well that the crowd was very much into it. Orton strayed from the mat game a bit when Angle kept getting the better of him, looking for his opportunity to get the R.K.O. which will put anyone down. Orton made two attempts at the R.K.O. while he had the advantage, but Angle slipped out of them both. On Orton's third attempt, Angle dropped down and grabbed Orton's ankle in preparation for the Ankle Lock. Orton tapped out before Angle could even get the move on and scurried from the ring.

Kurt Angle made Randy Orton submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:08:28.
Rating: ****

Orton wanted to win the match, but he wasn't about to put his ankle in any kind of jeopardy this close to the Elimination Chamber. Kurt Angle got the victory, but you could tell he was less than impressed with Orton running away like that. When they're in the confines of the chamber, they won't be able to escape.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MICK FOLEY
Before our main event, we had a very special interview with Mick Foley, who joined us via satellite from his home in Long Island. Foley seemed to be in good spirits, despite the fact that Eddie Guerrero broke the windows at his home two weeks ago. Joey O'Donnell and Brian Wagner asked Foley what he thinks of all of Eddie's taunts and challenges. "I'm just trying to let it all roll off my back. I'm retired. If he wants to use my name to get some heat, hey, more power to him. But I'm happy with my life and my career. And besides, Eddie is crazy." At this point, Guerrero himself joined the interview and continued to call the Hardcore Legend out, telling him that a real man would come talk to him face-to-face and not hide behind a satellite interview. Foley played it cool and tried not to get too upset, until Guerrero concluded the interview by telling Foley to watch very close what happens to his little buddy Chuck Palumbo next week.

Match #8
MAIN EVENT
World Heavyweight Title Match
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. "The" Crippler" Chris Benoit
Brock Lesnar and Chris Benoit were partners two weeks ago, but Benoit shocked a lot of people when he kicked Lesnar in the back and caused him to be pinned by Kurt Angle. Benoit insisted that it was just business and he will do anything to get the World Heavyweight Title back, so Lesnar decided he didn't want to wait until Summer Sizzler and gave the Crippler that chance tonight in Lexington. This was not the best match we have seen out of these two, but it sure was a good fight. Despite Benoit's relative small stature, he will go toe-to-toe with just about anybody, and both men are certainly going to be sore tomorrow after this fight. It's unfortunate the match ended like it did, because I could have watched these two beat the crap out of each other all night. However, with the Elimination Chamber coming up, everyone is looking to get the upperhand before the event, and John Bradshaw Layfield is no different as he came out and smashed both Lesnar and Benoit with the Stock Market Crash.

Chris Benoit and Brock Lesnar battled to a no contest in 0:11:24.
Rating: **
(Brock Lesnar retained the GCW World Heavyweight Title.)

The match was thrown out, but the fight wasn't as JBL continued to stomp away at Benoit and Lesnar until RANDY ORTON ran out and flattened JBL with the R.K.O.! Orton didn't have much chance to rest on his laurels as EDDIE GUERRERO was out here and hit him with the Three Amigos and the Frog Splash. This left only one man, and that was KURT ANGLE who ran out and dropped Latino Heat with the Angle Slam. As the show was going off the air, Angle grabbed the World Heavyweight Title and held it over his head as the other five men were all sprawled out on the mat. Could this be a sign of things to come?

Many matches were signed tonight for August 21st's Summer Sizzler event, which will come to you from the sold out Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here is what is signed thus far:

Soooorry, Ry! LoL! Everything's fine, btw, I just hit something of a creative slump even though I know exactly where I'm going. Plus I'm gearing up for grad school, so I had to take care of financial aid stuff. I also just got a promotion at work, so that's taking up a little time, but I'll always have time for GCDub, maan. ;)

Great opener, and the right man went over. Gotta wonder if this means the Foley story is on the backburner but I'd guess not. Yay Doane eats the fall! Yay NA title match between Rhyno and Brown! Brown's rocking it, btw.

Two more hot hot hot matches for Sizzler! Still love Dreamer in the commish role.

Poor Paul London... that really blows, but you pulled that off very nicely. Good touch.

Sheesh... Eric has the deck STACKED against him. I can't imagine who the tag partner would be...

JBL wins again, it seemed only a matter of time before he got a serious push.

:o Daniels and Punk at Sizzler?! Wow, sign me up!!

The ending to the Angle/Orton match was pure genius, Ryan... I've said it before and I shall again, you're the master :)

Huge smosh to end the show, but that's how you build to a 6-man EC ;) Nice show, as usual Ry!
